Environmental Program

Who we are We are a FUNDAP program that was constituted in 1993, which executes innovative projects, not paternalistic, within the framework of alternative technologies, oriented to the sustainable management of the renewable natural resources and environmental improvement, directed to organized groups and poor communities of Guatemala, with the purpose to improve their quality of life, providing related support and focused on the sustainable management of renewable natural resources.
What we do We support beneficiaries of the different projects we execute with: strengthening of social organization for environmental purposes, environmental infrastructure (nurseries, forest nurseries, agroforestry, improved stoves, potable water systems), forest management (protection plans, reforestation, agroforestry and production) and environmental education (recycling, environment, clean energy, etc). In a specialized manner, the program supports the preparation and presentation of forest management plans before the INAB National Forest Institute, in order to be included in the different forest incentive programs of the State of Guatemala.

Where we work The Environmental Program has its area of action in the western highland region of the country of Guatemala, focusing its attention on the communities, organizations and families in the rural area. The territory served covers an area of 25,794 km2, which represents 23.67% of the national territory.

Environmental initiatives
Comprehensive Education and Training This comprehensive training initiative offers constant support to beneficiaries in their personal and technical growth through activities such as: Agricultural and Business Diplomas; talks, demonstrations, educational tours, courses and workshops, workshops, meetings, and congresses, all with a focus on strengthening leadership and human quality.
Environmental Infrastructure With the aim of improving environmental infrastructures, this project supports communities in the design and construction of community drinking water systems and basic sanitation infrastructure such as: improved latrines, wood-saving stoves, rainwater harvesters, filters for greywater treatment, and the establishment of forest nurseries.
Environmental Awareness and Education This program supports beneficiaries with specific training initiatives on environmental issues and their conservation, such as: separation, classification, recycling, solid waste management, use of clean energy, use of homemade filters for greywater treatment, training of fire brigades, management of water resources, and issues regarding community agroforestry.
Social Organization This initiative provides training and technical support services for the restructuring of the social fabric, through the constitution and legalization of community organizations. They should promote the protection and sustainable management of renewable natural resources, according to current legislation in Guatemala, promoting environmental impact at the local, regional, and national levels.
Forestry Management This project provides technical services to individual and collective users through the preparation, presentation, and monitoring of forest management plans before the National Institute of Forests (INAB), so that they are included in the different programs of forest incentives in the country (protection, reforestation, agroforestry, and production). All within the framework of the forestry laws in force in Guatemala.
