Handicraft Program


®

Who we are We are a FUNDAP program that was constituted in 1991, which seeks to strengthen the productive and business capacity of the artisanal and organized manufacturing sector that has a low level of competitiveness; through the formulation, negotiation, and execution of projects of productive economic development and links to opportunities of commercial support, with attachment to the respect for the dignity of the people. Its existence is justified because it is an important income activity for producers and their families and also contributes to the preservation of the identity and culture of the people.

What we do We support the development of producer organizations through services of: advice and accompaniment, productive technical assistance, business and commercial assistance, design and development of new product collections, strengthening of social organization and interpersonal, business, and productive training. All with the purpose of promoting the development of the artisanal sector.

Where we work The Handicraft Program focuses its initiatives in the western highland regions of the country of Guatemala, focusing its attention on the rural area. The territory served covers an area of 29,989 km2, which represents 27.53% of the national territory.

Handicraft initiatives

Comprehensive Education and Training In this initiative, constant support is offered to the artisan beneficiary, in order to promote their personal and technical growth through activities such as: Leadership and Business Diplomas, seminars, educational tours, courses, classes, workshops, meetings, and congresses, all with a focus on business quality and personal development.

Transfer of Appropriate Technologies Provides advice and support to beneficiaries in the adaptation of appropriate production processes or models, through practices such as: weaving on a standing and backstrap loom, use of industrial or semi-industrial machines for textiles. This process is done while taking into account the raw materials, procedures, and equipment changes, depending on the case.

Market Linkage Artisan beneficiaries are supported with concrete actions that link them and facilitate access to the sellings market. Everything is carried out through activities such as: fairs, exhibitions, commercial tours, establishment of local squares or markets, business rounds, and new business contacts.

Social Organization This program provides training services and technical support for the restructuring of the social fabric. It is done through the constitution and legalization of community organizations, which promote development initiatives through activities with an artisanal production approach, in accordance with current legislation in Guatemala.

Productive and Business Technical Assistance In this initiative, the beneficiary is provided with comprehensive support through options such as Productive and Business Technical Assistance, Design and Development initiatives for new products, preparation of regulations, manuals, processes, and much more. This program provides a way for beneficiaries to continue growing in the world of crafts.
