The Headmaster goes to Izmir
During the school holidays, Bruno visited Izmir in Turkey as part of the Comenius Project. Langevin is one of eight in a group of European schools, with the other being located in the United Kingdom, Turkey, Denmark, Greece, Spain, Poland, and Italy. The schools all prepare mini projects on agreed topics and they swap the information with each other. At the moment, the topic is “sea vocabulary” and so at Langevin we are creating a sea dictionary in French and English, and I am teaching some of the classes traditional English songs about the sea! Whilst in Izmir, which is located on the West coast of Turkey, Bruno would have learnt a little about the Turkish education system and he presented the Comenius logos the children of Langevin had prepared. Izmir is the third largest city in Turkey, with a population of around 3.7 million! It was once known as the ancient city of Smyrna, but now it is a much more modern and busy commercial centre, surrounded by mountains and set around a huge bay. The currency in Turkey is the Lira and the word for “hello” is “merhaba”!
