Dear reader During the past year Guatemala has stagnated and in instances been polarized; economic and social development proposals, actions and initiatives have fallen behind. Our gross domestic product increased 3.1% in 2016, but we haven’t had the exponential growth needed to increase foreign investment, job creation and tax collection that can be directed towards social development to improve primary care, quality of education, security and transparency. The Mejoremos Guate initiative, created by the Fundación para el desarrollo de Guatemala (FUNDESA), the Comite Coordinador de Asociaciones Agricólas, Comerciales, Industriales y Financieras (CACIF) and other civic institutions is an effort supported by parties that believe in an organized private sector proposal that will lead to a more prosperous, unified, inclusive and secure country sustained by strong and transparent institutions. The ENADE, FUNDESA’s annual forum, has followed, advocated and supported these efforts each year. We worked on opportunity development in the 2012 ENADE through initiatives that promote job creation including those by the Consejo Privado de Competitividad to impulse the Agenda Nacional de Competitividad, increase investment in infrastructure, and develop the Urban Development Agenda. These activities have translated into better country rankings and international standings. We have also continued working on the Human Development Agreement signed in ENADE 2013, through a project developed by the Alianza por la
Nutrición that has improved processes and monitoring in the country’s main hospitals. It has increased medical inventory from 50% to 80% through technical assistance under the agreement between the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance, the Ministry of Finance and FUNDESA. We also worked directly with Empresarios por la Educacion to improve the quality of education and help schools comply with all 180 days of school. Under the pillar of a safer Guatemala, the Coalición por la Seguridad Ciudadana has implemented the 2014 ENADE proposal by developing the Criminal Justice Flow Diagram. We have worked with the Centro de Investigaciones Económicas Nacionales (CIEN) on improving the penitentiary system, and transformed a prison under gang control into the first rehabilitation and reinsertion center under the new penitentiary administration model of Guatemala. We also have figures showing a decrease in the homicide rates by more than 40% in the last 7 years. Finally, the Alianza Técnica de Apoyo al Legislativo and Guatemala Visible have followed the 2015 ENADE proposal on institutional strengthening to promote dialogue on national issues by monitoring laws discussed in legislation and Congress. This has increased transparency, improved civic dialogue and has been a step forward towards achieving our mission. In FUNDESA, we value assertive analyses based on evidence and aim for the dialogue and understanding that should identify any private sector institution but above all we want to bring society together and will always be open to the social agreements that will help develop our country. We hope you are interested in knowing more about FUNDESA and in helping us build a better Guatemala.
