Changing times of the pandemic

We are now just shy of two years from the beginning of the pandemic, and our world has gone through some seismic changes. A time which saw many of us grapple with new technologies in order to try and connect with each other. A time which saw many of our habits and social norms that we always took for granted, being frowned upon or seen as alien!

We have all missed giving that reassuring hug, that gentle pat on the back, that embrace, the friendly handshake, letting each other know that we are there for them - that we care. We’ve missed our families, being around our grandchildren, nieces and nephews. We’ve had to forfeit weddings and other big celebrations.

We’ve missed our freedom to go where we please – our holidays, and leisure time, our sporting fixtures, our various community clubs, and the supports that go with all these wonderful organizations. We’ve missed hospital and care home visits to our elderly. We’ve missed the basics of human interaction.

Padraics Civil Advert July 2020.qxp_Layout 1 17/07/2020 13:50 Page 1 It’s been a time of fear, hope, disappointment,

anger, sadness, staying at home, long queues, patience, numbers, and at times, utter exhaustion from the silent stresses the pandemic brought.

But it has also been a time of new discoveries, of an awareness of the world around us – of communities rallying together, cementing friendships, supporting our frontline workers by placing banners in our windows, Karaoke and street bingo, coming out to salute our deceased neighbours or friends, children painting messages of hope, love, and smiles on stones. We have learnt to slow down, discover new talents, and appreciate what we have.

It has been a time of banana bread, hand sanitizer, masks of various colours and designs, screens, yellow signs and arrows, online shopping, and finding treasures within our 5k limits.

And now as the restrictions have eased, we have a lot to be positive about, and for all of us to let go of our negativities, and that we will all strive for a brighter future.
