Savannah became the first city of the American colony “Georgia” after being founded by General Oglethorpe. As the colony grew, so did the city. General Oglethorpe designed multiple grids for the city. The grids each consist of public squares and parks. It was intended to provide space for meetings and businesses within each grid or square. There were originally twenty four squares in the city of Savannah; twenty two of those still remain in the city’s layout. Among those squares, larger ones were included. Chatham Square is an example of one that still exists today as a residential square. It was previously known as the Barnard Square due to the fact that a former school named the Barnard School was nearby. Today, that building is now in the possession of the Savannah College of Art and Design and named Pepe Hall. Located on Taylor and Barnard street, Pepe Hall exists as a campus building for the Fibers Department. of SCAD.
