T

he sounds of bagpipes will once again fill the Smoky Mountains this May, so grab your kilt and get ready to immerse yourself in all things Scottish at the 33rdand Games. The Festival will be held May 16-18, 2014 on the campus of Maryville College, and is East Tennessee’s premier celebration of Scottish culture and history. It is estimated that more than one million Tennesseans are descended from Scots-Irish ancestry. Our location in the heart of The Great Smoky Mountains is the perfect backdrop for you and your family to get a wee glimpse of Scotland and to discover and appreciate the rich traditions and history of the Scottish and Scots-Irish settlers of our area - extraordinary people whose courage, determination and pioneering spirit helped forge what was to become an independent United States of America.

“For centuries, traditional Highland games revolved around athletic competition, which is still an annual Smoky Mountain Scottish Festival integral part of the Festival today but we offer so much more.” said Dan Greaser, President of the Smoky Mountain Scottish Festival and Games. In addition to Highland heavy athletics, the festival will include many activities and events, such as Highland dancing, pipes and drums, musical entertainers, food and merchandise, clans, heritage organizations, animal exhibits, sheep dog herding demonstrations, and much more. Music is everywhere at the Festival and in addition to the dozens of pipes and drums bands, two performance stages will showcase the best in both modern and traditional Celtic music.

Seven Nations, whose modern sound has thrilled international audiences, will headline the Main Stage, which also includes the fiddling and dancing sisters of Maidens IV, the tribal sounds of Pictus, and local favorites Four Leaf Peat. For those who prefer a more traditional sound, Scottish balladeer Colin Grant Adams leads an impressive slate of entertainers on the Traditional Stage, including Lachlan and the Good Thyme Ceilidh Band. An evening Ceilidh (concert) with all the bands is the climax of Saturday’s musical program.Festival-goers will also enjoy traditional Scottish foods and offerings from the British Isles such as meat pies, shortbreads, and haggis. The merchandise vendors are specially chosen, and offer Scottish, Irish, and Celtic goods not normally found in stores, with everything from leather and jewelry to kilts and sporrans. To round out the Scottish Festival experience, there is a Dinner and Gala on Friday evening and two Scotch tasting seminars on Saturday. Sunday’s activities include a worship service and the popular fun dog show and parade.Tickets to the 2014 Smoky Mountain Scottish Festival and Games are now available online at www.smokymountaingames.org. There are several ticket packages to choose from with significant early purchase discounts. Children under 14 are admitted free, and there is a supervised children’s play area with games, face painting, and family activities. If you have been to The Smoky Mountain Scottish Festival and Games before, we look forward to your return and to the rekindling of old friendships. If you have not yet had the opportunity to attend, the volunteers and sponsors who make our Festival possible extend a personal invitation to you and your family to come join us. Come for the pipes and Blount drums; come for the history; come for the athletic competitions, entertainers and exhibits; come for County, TN the food and drink. Come and have a great time.

When local Dandridge merchants decided on a cruise-in type event for a new spring attraction in 2010, little did they know it would be so successful. The historic district, as designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is the perfect venue for groovy oldies music and cars of every age, make and color. Door prizes are given away all day, from 9 am to 4 pm, about every 15-20 minutes, from Dollywood season tickets to a free stay at a local bed and breakfast to prize baskets from local merchants. “The Fantasticks”

Comes to the Bardo Fine & Performing Arts Center Western Carolina University | Cullowhee, NC April 27, 2014 |5pm

T

alk about a time-proven audience-pleaser! “Try to Remember” a time when this charming, romantic musical wasn’t enchanting audiences around the world. The Fantasticks is the world’s longestrunning production of any kind, and with good reason: at the heart of its breathtaking poetry and subtle theatrical sophistication is a purity and simplicity that transcends cultural barriers. The result is a timeless fable of love that manages to be nostalgic and universal at the same time. It is a moving tale of young lovers who become disillusioned, only to discover a more mature, meaningful love. Punctuated by a bountiful series of catchy, memorable songs, many of which have become standards, audiences will find themselves humming along to such classics as “Try to Remember” and “Soon It’s Gonna Rain.” According to Paul Lormand, Director of the Bardo Arts Center,” Through the creative genius of the director, costume designer and scenic designer, comes a fresh new steam punk adaptation of this classic musical, which promises to provide an unparalleled experience, whether you are revisiting this show or seeing it for the first time.” Of the steampunk concept, Lormand states, “It’s not an intrusive concept. It seems like the allegoric-quality can blend with the fantasy, giving it a quasi-period feel and making for a stronger statement than [The Fantasticks] usually gets.” He added that the story is not being re-written or changed in any way. Outside of the costumes, set and props, this show is, in its entirety, the original. “It’s classical simplicity. It’s not a contemporary character tale. It’s about a boy who is overly in love with a girl whose fathers are trying to keep them together by pulling them apart,” Lormand said. “Steampunk seems to lend itself to this story by finding beauty among the broken pieces.” The Fantasticks, written by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, opened offBroadway on May 3rd, 1960 at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in New York City’s Greenwich Village with stage, film and television actor Jerry Orbach in the leading role. The production went on to play a record-breaking 17,162 performances before closing on January 13, 2002, making it the world’s longest-running musical and the longest continuously-running production of any kind in the United States. In August of 2006 the show was revived offBroadway at the Jerry Orbach Theatre inside the Snapple Theatre Center in Times Square. This tour of The Fantasticks, produced by the veteran theatrical touring company the Nebraska Theatre Caravan will stop at the Bardo Arts Center at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC on Sunday, April 27, 2014 @ 5:00 pm as part of a 65-city national itinerary. Western Carolina University is the final stop/performance of the tour. The production utilizes the Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt’s alternate version of the song “It Depends on What You Pay,” which replaces the controversial use of the word ‘rape’ with alternative lyrics such as ‘abduction’ and ‘raid,’ offering an experience that is entirely appropriate for the whole family. The production stars WCU Stage & Screen Alumnus Peter O’Neal as Matt (the boy). The Fantasticks is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI) Tickets are available by calling the box office at 828-227.2479; online at www.wcu.edu/bardoartscenter.edu or in person at the John W Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center, 299 Centennial Drive, Cullowhee, NC 28779. Jackson The Fantasticks is sponsored by Bear Lake Reserve and Holiday Inn Express, Dillsboro.

Ride Into History At Dutch Creek Trails

T

he home of Dutch Creek Trails is a 132 acre farm owned by Mr. Bennie Yates. Mr. Yates, now in his 80’s moved here when he was 5 years old. He has many tales about the place and people who used to live around here. For instance, the valley, which you will ride through coming back to the barn is called the Luthrey. It is called that because, many years ago, a man by the name of Luthrey was found froze to death in the head of that holler. Mr. Yates and his mother planted the silver maple in the edge of the drive. The mountain seen from the front porch is called Taylors Mountain; … so many stories! I have ridden the trails with Mr. Yates and he has a story about every valley and knoll. There is an old grave-yard and an “Indian” cave somewhere on the farm that I have yet to find. The views from the trails are stunning. Gazing out across lush mountains and valleys, Grandfather Mountain and Hanging Rock are profiled beautifully in the background. Their ride usually takes a little longer than an hour and cost $50 each. You will sign up at the house and get on the horse at the guide shack. Their “shuttle service” is a hay wagon ride to and from the place where you will be riding. (Just a little added fun)Rides go out at 10:00am, 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm in the summer and 11:00 am, 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm in the winter. They are closed on Sundays. Heritage Alive Mountain Youth Contest P

Youth U are En p to 18 courag ed to Ent er! At the Greening Up of the Mountains Festival Sylva, NC | April 26, 2014 | 10am-Noon

icture a young girl, dressed in a calico dress and apron, stepping on stage to sing. She’s not here to perform the latest pop music hit but opens her mouth and sings “I’ll Fly Away.” Her eyes shine bright and the audience can tell she loves this moment. Also on stage are two brothers who seem to have Bluegrass music oozing out of them. They can’t wait to play! There are singers, mandolin players, cloggers, banjo players, and guitar players...all waiting their turn to shine. The Heritage Alive Mountain Youth Talent Contest has provided this kind of performance opportunity for young people in our region for fifteen years. The Talent Contest is now preparing for it’s sixteenth season and young traditional musicians are practicing and preparing themselves. The Contest has been produced since it’s inception by Catch the Spirit of Appalachia and four years ago established a partnership with the Jackson County 4-H to assist in the implementation of the event. The purpose of

the Youth Talent Contest is to discover, develop, and encourage talent in the youth of Western North Carolina and to provide an opportunity for local youth to perform on stage before an audience. To enter is free; cash prizes or trophies are offered and no child walks away without a prize. The first Heritage Alive Mountain Youth Talent Contest of the year is April 26, 10amNoon, during the Greening Up the Mountains festival in Sylva, NC. Entry forms are due April 21 and we welcome everyone to join us in the audience as well. The other Contests will be held at the Stecoah Valley Bluegrass Festival in Stecoah, NC on Saturday, May 17, 2014, at 1pm. Franklin Folk Festival on July 19, at 3pm. Cash prizes are offered for all three contests. A “Best of Show” winner is determined at each Mountain Youth Talent Contest and those youth are then invited to perform on stage at the Mountain Heritage Day held at Western Carolina University each Fall. a larger venue with a broader audience, and it is terrific to watch the young people from the Talent Contests serve as ambassadors of traditional Appalachian music and heritage. The youth are also encouraged to participate in the 4-H Entertains program with the 4-H programs in their respective counties. These contests support and encourage youth who want to pick a few tunes and sing some beautiful songs and in return honor those people and traditions that have come before them. Mountain Music School is a unique educational program that offers opportunities for students age ten and older to experience traditional Appalachian old-time music in a fun, enriching, and supportive environment. Today, the school has grown to include more than 100 students of all ages, many of whom travel from throughout the country to participate.

Preserve The Tradition

Each year during the last week in July, students gather on the campus of Mountain Empire Community College to explore the unique music, dance, and culture of our region. The week’s learning culminates in a jam session highlighting the musical accomplishments of our students.

Barter Presents World Premiere of “The Dryad: An Appalachian Tale”

THE ENCHANTING APPALACHIAN TALE OPENS MARCH 8

F

amily, tradition, and these mountains are what the people of Appalachia proudly hold dear, and they permeate the legends of the region that is rich with storytelling. Barter Theatre knows the importance of sharing those stories, and with the world premiere of its new play, Barter presents a captivating tale that celebrates the resilience of the Appalachian people and their culture. “The Dryad: An Appalachian Tale” opens March 8 at Barter’s Stage II. “The Dryad: An Appalachian Tale,” a play by Carol Wright Krause, began its development at Barter last year, winning top honors at the 2013 Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights. It is a story about connection and hope, in which an Appalachian family discovers the best in themselves as they stand up against tough circumstances, aided by something mysterious and a little bit magical. The enchantingly hopeful story resonated with festivalgoers, and this spring Barter will mount the world premiere performance. “It is part of our goal here at Barter to

celebrate the writings about this area we live in,” said Bivins, director of “The Dryad: An Appalachian Tale.” “When we do produce an Appalachian play, we feel like we’re giving something to the people of this area and whoever else might be passing through. It’s a celebration of the lives and stories of the people in this part of the world.” In “The Dryad: An Appalachian Tale,” Lena returns to her father’s home after leaving her no-good husband, and discovers that circumstances are even harder than she realized. The Great Depression has hit the Appalachian Mountains hard and the chestnut trees that have sustained the community are dying off one by one. When it seems like all hope is lost, a mysterious young girl enters Lena’s life. She knows things that she should have no way of knowing and seems determined to help Lena turn things around. In folklore, a dryad is a tree nymph who will reward anyone who frees her with a kiss that grants special gifts. Could it be a dryd who comes to Lena’s aid, or, as director Mary Lucy Bivins asked, “Why can’t it be a

“She’s picked out

fellow human being who has that power as well?” The play is written by Carol Wright Krause, a Missouri native who proudly claims Appalachian history. For her, the importance of telling this story was its message of strength and hope, one that she found compelling in the context of the region’s history. “You find hope on two levels,” said Krause. “One is the human revival that happens. It reminds us of everyone in our families that have fostered long life, happiness and independence simply by the work, from digging with their hands in the dirt to whatever you had to do to keep your people happy and healthy.” “The Dryad” is now playing at Barter’s Stage II.
