Welcome to
Miami
Many tourists think of them as one, yet Miami and Miami Beach are actually two cities that have a lot in common. They are both hot in every way imaginable! Located well below Florida’s frost line, their climate is always tropical, and their heat extends to every part of your experience as a visitor. Hot nightlife, cuisine, entertainment, art, music and culture are the essence of Miami and Miami Beach. Credit the Cuban, Caribbean and South American influences for adding a gorgeous Latin personality and warmth to every aspect of these cities. “Muy caliente!” will be the first Spanish words you’ll learn when you ask anyone about Miami and Miami Beach. The Miami Area extends an open invitation year-round to the LGBT visitor. The cornucopia of things to do and events to attend is extensive . The leading events, Winter Party, Gay 8 Festival, Art Basel, OUTshine Film Festival, Miami Beach Pride, Aqua Girl, Sizzle Miami, White Party, Out in the Tropics, Celebrate Orgullo and the White Party Week, lead the list. Literally, most months have major events to attend and have fun in the sun. You’ll want to check with The Hub – LGBT Center, The Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau and this Fun Travel Guide®, for the roster of exciting annual LGBT parties and events… and for help with all the logistics of your visit. Accommodations are plentiful and advance planning is suggested. Airport, City, Bay and Beach locations are all available. Just walking along the sunny beaches, sidewalks lined with great shopping venues, restaurants, entertainment venues, attractions and museums and art galleries, make Miami and the Beaches the place to go and enjoy yourself, or be with family or friends. Many neighborhoods are worthy of your exploration. If this is your first visit to “Miami” it certainly won’t be the last. Miami - Key West | 1

DEDICATION It is with great pride that I publish this edition of the Miami / Miami Beach and Key West Fun Travel Guide and dedicate it to a man who has worked tirelessly and with the highest dedication to promote the Miami area to the world. As Vice President of Cultural Affairs for the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, he has traveled the world for over 20 years on this mission. He is largely responsible for bringing the Art Basel event, a blockbuster show, each year, to the Convention Center and throughout Miami and the Beaches. George showed up everywhere and then some, to promote the Bureau, LGBT Chamber and other events without ever missing a beat. His charm, grace, wit, humility, collection of hats and always, with “GLITTER” are his trademarks. There are very few people, in Miami and elsewhere, that aren’t in debt, in one way or another to George. One of his special passions is the historical preservation of buildings and culture of Miami Beach and for that matter, the State of Florida. George recently retired from the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, however, will remain on the scene as a tour guide “par excellence”. I am honored to dedicate this edition of the Miami /Miami Beach Fun Travel Guide to George Neary. Alan H Beck Publisher, Fun Travel Guides

GETTING HERE
By Air: Miami is served by two airports, Miami International, (MIA) and Fort Lauderdale / Hollywood International (FLL). Miami International is one of the largest airports in the world and an important hub for traffic between North America and Latin America. American Airlines is MIA’s major carrier. Fort Lauderdale International is further from Miami and has recently been expanded with more domestic and international connections. FLL is host to Jet Blue, Southwest and Spirit and other airlines that may offer better domestic fares than MIA. Check flights to both airports before booking your flight while also considering ground transportation. Fort Lauderdale is 25-40 minutes north of Miami by car or Uber. Brightline, a new rail service now serves Fort Lauderdale direct to downtown Miami. By Rail: Amtrak serves Miami frequently from Central Florida and Northeastern US with several daily trains. The new Brightline rail service provides 14 trains a day from Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale. Convenient to the airport, the train station is located off of Broward Blvd. in downtown, Fort Lauderdale, 10 minutes away. The Miami station located in downtown Miami. By Car: Three main highways lead to Miami. I-95 extends south along the Atlantic coast of Florida and terminates in Miami. US Highway 1 provides access from the Florida Keys to the South of Miami, to and through the City. I-75 cuts in from the west and Florida’s Gulf Coast. By Boat: Miami Cruise Port: Celebrity Cruises, Carnival, Holland America and other cruise ships are regular visitors to the Port. Private yachts and cruisers visit the many marinas along Biscayne Bay.

KEY WEST Welcome to
Key West
Enchanting Key West has two mottoes that express the reality of this gay paradise at the southernmost tip of the United States. The first is “One Human Family” and the second is “Almost Perfect – Never Normal.” There is no community on earth that socializes as well as Key West, mixing straight and gay into one fabulous cocktail of fun and frolic. Although Spain ceded Florida to the United States in 1819, and Henry Flagler built a railroad that linked Key West to the mainland in 1912, the city has never became fused - at heart - with the rest of the Country. Flagler’s railroad was swept away by the Great Hurricane of 1935, and, in 1982, Key West proclaimed its independence as “The Conch Republic.” This was a brief effort, mostly in jest, yet expressive of the pride it takes in its unique personality. Over the decades, Key West business has evolved from shipwreck scavenging, to military installations, and finally, to tourism, without overly glorifying the workday. Key West continues its constant desire to embrace and enjoy its visitors. Pack lightly and get ready to relax on the beach, by a pool, on a Duval Street bar stool or pausing on a sidewalk to banter with the dazzling drag performers luring you into their venues. Jump on a bicycle or scooter, take a boat tour, paddle a kayak or go snorkeling or parasailing. Peruse the many fine shops and galleries, and finally, make the most difficult decision of your Key West day, selecting a restaurant from among so many delicious offerings. The variety of lodgings make a bed for everyone. Come on down and enjoy a different style of life! Miami - Key West | 37
