Like its rough exterior, Thistle is the name of a flower that acquaints with aggressiveness, pain, protection & pride. The significance of a Thistle flower is defined as not only the flower but also its weed. Though the weed is commonly assiociated as a parasitic organism, it is valued to symbolise not just might & brilliance; but poverty & weakness.

Concept breakdown: Ideation Process One / I want to explore the concept on Japanese Folklore, which encompasses the informally learned folk traditions of Japan and the Japanese people as expressed in its oral traditions, customs, and material culture. In Japanese, the term minkan denshō (“transmissions among the folk”) is used to describe folklore. By including common superstitons and beliefs of the people, I want to try and recreate a vision of old customs and traditions that was once popular. 01 / RESEARCH

THOUSAND THISTLES Like its rough exterior, Thistle is the name of a flower that acquaints with aggressiveness, pain, protection and pride. The significance of a Thistle flower is defined as not only the flower but also its weed. Though the weed is commonly associated as a parasitic organism, it is valued to symbolise not just might and brilliance; but also poverty and weakness. Alike to the notable warriors during the Japanese Edo period, their role was to defend their territories against rivals, to fight enemies identified by the government, and battle with hostile tribes and bandits. Overall, these Heroes are respected and worshipped because of their dexterity and heart for their people. This composition focuses on the retelling of Ancient Folklore in a campfire setting, where fire is used as a repetitive motif that embodies the power of destruction, yet contains generative qualities to illuminate and renew — Just like these warriors.

CHARACTER MOTIF 01 Gunbai War Fan

CHARACTER MOTIF 02 Mokumokuren

CHARACTER MOTIF 03 Oni Yokai — The Troll

Delving into the topic of science, this series will be focused on Science as an instrument of worship.

“Mokumokuren” means “many eyes” or “continuous eyes”. The Mokumokuren is considered by the Japanese to be one of the inhabitants of haunted houses.

They are typically portrayed as hulking figures with one or more horns growing out of their heads. Stereotypically seen in blue or green-colored loincloths.

CHARACTER MOTIF 07 Storyteller’s Adventure

FILLER MOTIF 08 Frogs – ‘Kaeru’

FILLER MOTIF 08 Floating Tōrōs

Inspired from Rakugo — It is a form of Japanese verbal entertainment. The storyteller is usually seen sitting on stage to re-enact a story. They are known to depict complicated, sometimes sentimental storyline. Therefore, the role of this character helps to deliver my intended message.

The japanese believe that frogs messengers of omens. These creatures are sometimes carried by travellers to make sure they return home safely from their journeys. The word ‘frog’ in Japanese means ‘return’, which is why they are seen alongside fighting warriors in war — signifying an emblem of safely and peace.

Lanterns carry a lot of meaning in Japanese history. Most often, they represents the cycle of life, all the good and the bad. The repetition of these lanterns also means remembrance of these heroic acts during the time of political unrest.

CHARACTER MOTIF 04 Ninja

CHARACTER MOTIF 05 Sumo Fighter 1

CHARACTER MOTIF 06 Sumo Fighter 2

A ninja or shinobi was a covert agent or mercenary in feudal Japan. The functions of a ninja included deception and surprise attacks.

Defined by their determination and strength, they honor perserverence. This is why I decided to include them in my series of heroic characters.

Sumo is a form of competitive fullcontact wrestling where a rikishi attempts to force his opponent out of a circular ring or into touching the ground with any body part other than the soles of his feet.

p g 19

FILLER MOTIF 08 Campfire’s Burning – Ka Ka refers to as fire in Japanese. Bodily, ka represents body heat, and in the mental and emotional realms, it represents drive and passion. I made use of fire to reflect the characteristics of the notable warriors of the Edo period.

Final Color Scheme: Earth tone palette — After confirming on the hierarchy of my motifs’ layout, I ventured into the different moods of color palette to suit the overall concept of my banner – Thousand Thistles. Eventually, after color testing and printing, I settled with this earthy, muted hues to compliment my design direction. I want it to replicate the look and feel of a Japanese mural painting/ handscroll painting. 01 / RESEARCH
