We have a story to tell. A bedtime story.

A well-known proverb tells us that morning is wiser than evening. At first glance, this seems completely irrational – logically speaking, it is in the evening we should be wiser through the knowledge we gain during the day. Actually the people who originally came up with this proverb knew exactly what they were talking about. The night sweeps away the aches and pains of your tired limbs, erases your worries and troubles and lets your mind go wandering. The mysterious outskirts of the dream land are a place where you can meet strangers and your loved ones and, maybe, even catch a glimpse of yourself. Sometimes it is only in our dreams that our most bright and brilliant ideas which got lost in the everyday commotion finally catch up with us. Such is the magic of sleep. Adults need to sleep for an average of 7.3 hours a night; only 10 % of people need less than that. On average, we can still function normally with 2 hours less sleep, but not for extended periods of time. Sleep gives us a possibility to relax and unwind and also activates our immune system. In addition to making you drowsy for the whole day, restless sleep and sleep deprivation can also lead to various health problems. They slow down your metabolism, heart rate, respiratory frequency and the blood flow to your heart and lower your muscle tone. Insufficient sleep can hinder dietary efforts, speed

up the ageing process and cause the imbalance of the immune system. Sleeping even 1 hour less than is normal for you for several consecutive nights is enough to cause exhaustion, which is a far more common problem than insomnia and other sleep disorders. Good sleep habits and peaceful environment can both have a significant impact on the quality of your sleep. To get the most out of your sleep, please keep the following basics in mind: • the mattress and the bed base should keep your body in a comfortable position and give you enough freedom to move about • bedrooms should be lit appropriately: dimly lit or dark rooms are the best both for daytime naps and sleeping at night • peace and quiet: noise disturbs your sleep • the right room temperature (16–18°C/60–65°F) Sleep is such an integral part of our lives that we should strive to make it one of our priorities. After a good night’s sleep our eyes see the world more clearly, we feel happier and calmer and our body is in a better condition to help us carry out our ideas, plans and dreams. Sleep well!

Why choose Furnico mattresses? Experience

Broad product range

Furnico was founded in 1992 under the name of AS Ain Kullo. In its early years, the principal activity of the company was selling imported furniture in Estonia. Over the years, the market situation changed and the company, which changed its name to OÜ Furnico in 1997, started to gradually focus on selling mattresses, spring beds and mattress toppers in Estonia and abroad. In 1997, Furnico launched its new brand Hypnos that quickly became the symbol of a good night’s sleep and comfortable mattresses for many Estonians. Furnico mattresses and spring beds are produced by a manufacturing company in the Estonian city of Narva. Since 2007, Furnico has held most of its shares. The production of mattresses and spring beds by the manufacturing company in Narva started already in 1955. The latest know-how and half a century long experience of furniture making in Narva provide the cornerstone for the quality Furnico offers.

We are proud to be able to offer our customers almost everything they could ever wish for. We have a wide range of products to choose from. Our spring beds, spring mattresses and mattress toppers are divided into different product grades. The product range starts from the more conservative Bonnell coil products, which provide a comfortable surface to sleep on, and ends with zoned and pocketed beds and mattresses adapting to the position and body shape of the user. The mattress topper is the icing on the cake. For our mattress toppers, we use a wide range of polyurethane foams and latex.

Quality Furnico beds and mattresses are made using high quality, breathable, nature and skin friendly materials and are therefore suitable for people suffering from allergies and hypersensitivity. The differences between models arise from the different combinations of spring systems and upholstery layers. To find your perfect mattress, try at least three or four different models. Proper maintenance and care are vital to keep your mattress looking and feeling just as it did on the day you bought it. Mattresses, spring beds and mattress toppers should be aired and vacuumed regularly. To prolong the lifespan of your spring mattress, flip it over regularly to give the materials time to recover. Unfortunately, with time, even the highest quality materials tend to wear out; and we therefore recommend replacing your mattress every 5–7 years.

Furnico product range can cater for any age and taste, different needs and wishes.

Customer co-operation Good and flexible customer relations inspire us, and we are always open to new suggestions that allow us to enrich and improve our product range. Comfortable beds are important for any establishment providing accommodation. A good hotel bed should be firm enough to support the body and give the visitors a chance to get the most out of their sleep during their business trips or holidays. The Hypnos beds we offer to accommodation establishments are made of high quality materials and meet all the requirements imposed on such establishments as well as the requirement of the Estonian fire safety class SK2. Hotel beds meeting more rigorous requirements of the Estonian fire safety class SK1 are available upon request from the customer. The covers of our mattress toppers can be washed at 60°C/140°F. The product range also includes mattress protectors.

A mattress is a mat or pad usually placed on top of a bed for sleeping. The word “mattress” is derived from Arabic words meaning “throw” and “a place where something is thrown” or “a cushion”. During the Crusades, Europeans adopted the Arabic method of sleeping on cushions thrown on the floor, and the word “materas” eventually descended into Middle English through the Romance languages. Though a mattress may be placed directly on the floor, it is usually placed on top of a bed base (e.g. platform bed, a box with metal springs or slatted foundation) to be further from the ground. Historically, mattresses have been filled with a variety of natural materials, including straw and feathers. Modern mattresses usually contain either an inner spring core or materials such as latex, viscoelastic, or other polyurethane type foams. Mattresses may also be filled with air or water. What are Furnico mattresses made of? Polyurethane foam

Latex

Polyurethane foam is soft and elastic foam, with air making up almost 90% of its volume. This makes polyurethane foam a user-friendly material: it is odourless, it breathes and does not make you sweat. With time, the exposure to light will cause the colour of the polyurethane foam to change; but this does not affect its performance. The polyurethane foam produced in the past decades differs greatly from its modern equivalent. Sadly, the practice of using Freon and other toxic and impure chemicals as foaming agents in the production process that lasted until the beginning of the 90ies made people prejudiced against polyurethane foam. Today the members of EUROPUR, the association of European polyurethane foam manufacturers, apply modern technologies to their polyurethane foam production process and all their products are completely Freon-free and do not contain any harmful compounds.

Latex is a natural, elastic and durable material produced from the milky sap of the rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis. Air is beaten into latex until it reaches the right consistency depending of the desired firmness of the final product. Using a hose, latex foam is then sprayed onto a conveyor belt where it turns into a gel-like substance. After that, latex is heated for 25 minutes at 100°C/212°F. The heat causes vulcanisation, during which the gel-like substance transforms into the flexible latex rubber we are all familiar with. The latex is then washed thoroughly to remove any residues of the chemical treatment. This is followed by careful drying. The dried product is perforated and cut to size.

Most of the flexible polyurethane foam goes to the furniture industry, which needs many different kinds of it, all with different levels of softness, density, firmness, elasticity and durability. Depending on the product it contains, the lifespan of polyurethane foam can be up to 10 years, provided that the foam used in the product has the right technical properties for this kind of application. The polyurethane foam used in our products has been approved by the Estonian Allergy Association and is therefore also suitable for people suffering from allergies.

Spring core The spring core is the heart of every mattress and all upholstered furniture: supporting all the different upholstery layers, it has a vital role to play in how comfortable the final product is. The spring unit consists of rows of several interconnected springs. A quality spring system provides mechanical and hygienic comfort even after years of use. The air gaps between the upholstery layers allow the air to flow freely and make sleeping more comfortable. • Springs are better for your health than other materials, materials, for they let the air to flow freely in the mattress. Getting rid of the body moisture is therefore more efficient than in other materials.

7

• The properties of the microclimate inside the mattress reduce the risk of dust mites by 60 %.

mattresses are especially suitable for adjustable beds.

• Spring mattresses allow the users to change their sleeping position with ease. • The high quality spring systems are durable and have shown no notable signs of losing elasticity • The spring units are also enviromentally friendly, because all the materials used can be recycled.

There are three main types of spring systems used in mattress construction.

Bonnell

Main advantages of the LFK spring core: • very flexible and therefore suitable for adjustable beds • its higher coil count makes the mattress flexible and provides great back support • the springs are situated very close to one another and form a sturdy foundation for the upholstery layers.

Pocket spring system The classic spring system. Individual springs are positioned in rows and connected with a spiral coil. The most characteristic feature of the Bonnell spring system is its hourglass shaped coils. This system is also particularly good for its ability to facilitate the airflow through the mattress.

Dense spring core LFK (Lightweight) A lightweight spring system made of small diameter wire. The wire has been thermally treated to enhance its durability. The final loops are almost rectangular resulting in the so-called hinge effect, due to which these

8

Its high level of comfort and versatility are making it increasingly popular among upholstered furniture and mattress manufacturers. Springs are

wrapped individually in fabric pockets and glued together to form the spring unit. In zoned pocket spring systems, wires of different diameters are used for different zones resulting in areas with different levels of firmness and softness. The spring systems with 5 or 7 zones are currently the most popular.

Furniture fabrics are generally made of polyester and are usually non-washable.

• each spring moves independently providing great elasticity

• Stretch fabrics are used mainly for pocketed spring units where it is vital for the ticking to match the movement of the spring unit in order to adapt to the body shape of the user. These fabrics are often used coupled with furniture fabrics: furniture fabrics to cover the sides of the mattress or couch and stretch fabrics to cover the top. Stretch fabrics are also being used more and more to cover mattress toppers, especially latex ones. Stretch fabrics are usually washable.

• gives good body support

Wadding

Advantages of pocket spring system:

• very comfortable • silent spring core

Wadding or batting is a soft, permeable and odourless synthetic material with good shape retaining properties. Wadding is placed directly under the ticking and is generally stitched to it.

Fabrics

All fabrics used in Furnico products are made of high quality, breathable, soft and skin friendly materials. The fabrics meet the requirements of the international Oeko-Tex standard 100 certificate: they are environmentally friendly and pose no risk to health. The fabrics used in Furnico products can be categorised into three broad groups. • Mattress fabrics – 50/50 or 40/60 cotton/ polyester depending on the product. Polyester makes the fabrics durable and easier to clean; cotton is skin friendly and gives the fabrics their natural feel. Depending on the processing method used, mattress fabrics are either washable or non-washable and differ mainly in shrinkage (max 2%). • Furniture fabrics are used mainly in the production of upholstered furniture and couches, but have recently become more popular in making high-end beds and mattresses, especially continental beds.
