THE IMPORTANCE OF SEAT HEIGHT, WIDTH AND DEPTH
W
hen it comes to choosing the best ergonomic office chair there are a few specifications that need to be carefully considered, including the seat’s height, width and depth.
Seat Height The correct seat height will depend on the height of the person using the chair. Opting for a seat that is adjustable between 16 and 21 inches off the floor should be suitable for most employees. Any good office chair should include a height adjustment that is easy to use and is usually controlled with a lever under the seat. The correct seat height should enable users to keep their feet flat on the floor, their thighs horizontal, and
their arms level with the desk in front of them. Maintaining this position will support the back and legs, whilst also improving circulation.
Seat Width and Depth Seat width and depth play a key role in maintaining comfort. The width and depth of the chair should be sufficient to comfortably support any employee. Standard office chairs tend to be between 17 and 20 inches wide. The seat should be deep enough that employees can sit with their back against the backrest, with between two and four inches between the backs of their knees and the edge of the seat. If either of these measurements aren’t quite right, employees can end up feeling uncomfortable.
