Creating
Warmth & Texture
Using
Texture
in your kitchen design We are seeing a lot of mixed materials and textures in contemporary kitchen design, why is it important to add texture to your kitchen? Texture brings depth and interest into a room and provides visual weight. Besides colour, contrasting textures is a wonderful way to make certain aspects stand out more than others; this can create a focal point in a room or accent a piece of furniture.
What materials and finishes do you like to use in your kitchen designs? In the past glossy joinery was extremely popular but these days I am drawn to satin and matt finishes with just a little bit of shine added as an accent. Now there are many beautiful quartz bench tops available on the market in a honed or matt finish and I love how brushed brass sits against that finish. The brushed brass against the matt of the bench top stone is luxurious and incredibly soft, unlike gloss and highly polished metals which are a much louder combination.
Our new solid brass Belgravia handle range (view on next page) boasts a mixture of shapes and textures, what kitchen setting would you use these in? I feel that the Belgravia handle range is very versatile because it is a modern take on a classic design. The finish is very contemporary, and its simplicity can be successfully paired with several styles such as Contemporary, Hamptons and even Mid-Century Modern. The soft gold tones bring warmth, and the finish and texture is simply exquisite.
Do you feel that kitchen design has become more transitional in nature and using unique materials and textures is enabling this trend? I feel that the humble kitchen is not so humble anymore. Family life is very much centred on the kitchen and our love of food and entertaining has made the kitchen the centre of most modern homes. This also means that we spend a lot more time in that space, so we want it to be a part and a

continuation of the entertainment and family areas. I think it is less about the pure utilitarian use of the kitchen and more about beauty and function combined with style and a continuation of our living spaces.
A lot of my clients are looking for a kitchen design that will not date, is beautiful and practical, so for me its all about satin cabinet doors in soft colours, durable bench top surfaces and stylish accent hardware that will complement and set off the design. Joinery handles in my mind are like jewellery to a little black dress, they complement and lift the room to the next level and should never be overlooked or underestimated.
Kitchen joinery has come a long way in the last few years, new products and finishes are coming onto the market every day and we designers have a greater choice of colours and textures than ever before. The same can be said for cabinetry hardware like handles and pulls, thus making the kitchen more like custom furniture that complements the rest of the home and even spills into other areas to include extra storage.
