Extreme heat may force mass exodus from W Asia Climate change may render parts of West Asia and North Africa uninhabitable, forcing the residents to leave the region which is home to over 500 million people, a study has warned. Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany and the Cyprus Institute in Nicosia have calculated that the goal of limiting global warming to less than two degrees Celsius, agreed at the recent UN Paris summit, will not be sufficient to
prevent this scenario. The temperature during summer in the already very hot West Asia and North Africa will increase more than two times faster compared to the average global warming, they said. This means that during summer months temperatures south of the Mediterranean will reach 46 degrees Celsius by midcentury . Such extremely hot days will occur five times more often than was the case at the

turn of the millennium. In combination with increasing air pollution, the environmental conditions could become intolerable and may force people to migrate. The number of extremely hot days has doubled since 1970 in West Asia. Another finding was that heat waves could occur ten times more often than they do now. “If mankind continues to release carbon dioxide as it does now, people living in the Middle East and North Africa will have to expect about 200 unusually hot days,“ said Panos Hadjinicolaou from Cyprus Institute. Computers of the future may store data on DNA Your next computer might store its data on DNA, with Microsoft exploring the oldest living thing in the world as a way of storing information and avoiding a future data apocalypse. It hopes that using the highly-efficient and longlasting molecule will allow it to keep pace with the growth of data, which doubles each year but is becoming harder to actually store all of it. Microsoft has bought mil lions of strands of DNA, which stores the human body's information, to see if its data properties can be harnessed for storing other kinds of infor mation. DNA can fit almost 1 billion terabytes of data into just one gram. That makes it far more efficient than any other known form of storage.
And it also manages to last for a long time, as can be seen in the fact that the DNA of woolly mammoths has stayed accessible tens of thousands of years after they died. Storing data in DNA would allow it to last for 2,000 years or more. But DNA remains expensive. The US startup that Microsoft bought the DNA from charges
10 cents for a custom DNA sequence. Accessing it is similarly expensive, as it relies on genetic sequencing. Costs have dropped massively -the human genome project cost about $3 billion in the 13 years it took from 1990, but would cost $1,000 now.
More than 1,200 new planets discovered NASA added more than 1,200 new planets to the known galaxy, more than doubling the number of confirmed planets orbiting alien stars. Revealing data from the Kepler telescope, the astronomers said that the discovery is a step toward finding Earth-like planets.
Analysis of data from Kepler found that 1,284 candidates have a 99% chance of being a planet, of 4,302 potential planets detected by the telescope. Kepler searches in particular for planets in the “habitable zone” – close enough to a star for water to pool on the surface of a planet;

Science News Extreme weather, increasing level of toxins in food: Study NAIROBI: As they struggle to deal with more extreme weather, a range of food crops are generating more of chemical compounds that can cause health problems for people and livestock who eat them, scientists have warned.
A new report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) says that crops such as wheat and maize are generating more potential toxins as a reaction to protect themselves from extreme weather. But these chemical
Scientists detect new state of matter Physicists announced Monday the discovery of a new state of matter that has been theorized for four decades but never actually observed, Anadolu Agency reported. Quantum spin liquid has the bizarre ability to break apart
electrons, long thought to be indestructible building blocks of atoms that comprise everything in the universe. In application, scientists believe the discovery could help computers reach much faster speeds. (IINA)
UAE to build artificial mountain to increase rainfall UAE: The United Arab Emirates is planning to build a man-made mountain to increase rainfall. The desert nation is hoping the major project will recreate the effect of mountain ranges and force air to rise, creating clouds that will allow cloudseeding. Cloud-seeding is a type of weather modification which aims to alter the amount and type of precipitation produced by clouds. Scientists from National Centr e f or A tmos pheric
Research (NCAR) run by the US-based University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) are currently in the "detailed modelling study" phase. They are deciding on the most effective locations in the Emirate states to build it, while also pondering how wide and tall it should be. The UAE already has a permanent weather modification department which spent $385,400 on cloud-seeding last year alone.

compounds are harmful to people and animals if consumed for a prolonged period of time, according to a report released during a UNEP Assembly meeting in Nairobi. Under normal conditions, for instance, plants convert nitrates they absorb into nutritious amino acids and proteins. But prolonged drought slows or prevents this conversion, leading to more potentially problematic nitrate accumulating in the plant, the report said. If people eat too much nitrate in their diets, it can interfere with the ability of red blood cells to transport oxygen in the body. Some drought-stressed crops, when then exposed to sudden large amounts of rain that lead to rapid growth, in turn accumulate hydrogen cyanide, more commonly known as prussic acid, the report said.
Scientists discover three potentially habitable planets An international team of astronomers from MIT, the University of Liège in Belgium, and elsewhere have detected three planets orbiting an ultracool dwarf star, just 40 light years from Earth. The sizes and temperatures of these worlds are comparable to those of Earth and Venus, and are the best targets found so far for the search for life outside the solar system. The results are published today in the journal Nature. AFP

Malaysians waste 15,000 tons of food daily Kuala Lumpur: Malaysians waste 15,000 tons of food daily, including 3,000 tons that is still fit for consumption and should not be discarded, BERNAMA reported. Research conducted by the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) shows that 28.4 percent of the padi produced is wasted. Muslim World News New Islamic finance infrastructure bank announced Jakarta: Saudi Arabia has joined Turkey, Indonesia and the Jeddah-based Islamic Development Bank (IDB) as a prospective founder member of a new Islamic finance infrastructure bank, according t o I n d o n e s i a ’s F i n a n c e Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro. Speaking to Reuters on the
sidelines of the annual IDB meeting of governors in Jakarta, Brodjonegoro said the four could contribute around $300 million each for the project, with plans calling for the establishment of two regional Islamic banks based in Istanbul and Jakarta. “It will be the effort of not only the four of us, but also others. But the four

will be the founders.” The new entities could be operational as early as next year, tasked not only with financing via Islamic bonds (sukuk) but also supporting the secondary market for those financial instruments, Brodjonegoro added. “In order to make a market for sukuk, the existence of this bank will be very important.” Efforts to create an Islamic bank with the balance sheet to underwrite large infrastructure deals dates back more than a decade, but previous efforts have failed to materialize. One of the World's Oldest Libraries Restored in Morocco FEZ, Morocco - Founded 12 centuries ago by a pioneering woman and nestled in the old Medina of Fez, Morocco's University of al-Qarawiyyin library is one of the world's oldest libraries, home to unique Islamic manuscripts treasured by historians. Yet it's been largely hidden from the public. The architect leading its restoration, Fez native Aziza Chaouni, didn't even know it existed until she was asked to work on it. Chaouni is hoping it will mark an ideological change, too, and open to the public for the first time in its long history. Until now, the privilege of using the library has been limited to scholars who seek formal permission, and authorities haven't decided yet
whether to change that. From calligraphic designs on the walls to ceramic patterns on the floors and wooden carvings on the ceilings, the fingerprint of almost every ruling dynasty since the 9th century can be seen in the architecture. A devout and wealthy Muslim woman from the Tunisian town of Kairaouan, Fatima al-Fihri, provided the endowment for building alQarawiyyin in the 9th century. Originally a mosque, it expanded in the 10th century to b e c o m e a u n i v e r s i t y, Abdelmajid El-Marzi, imam and admin. of the mosque. The library houses a collection of manuscripts written by renowned thinkers
from the region, including Ibn Khaldun's "Muqadimmah." The 14th-century historical work spent six months on loan to the Louvre Museum in Paris during the renovations, library curator Abdelfattah Bougchouf said. Other texts include a 9thcentury Quran written in Kufic calligraphy, and a manuscript on the Maliki school of Islamic jurisprudence by Ibn Rochd, also known as Averroes. A important way to improve access to the manuscripts is to digitize them, which the library has been doing, and about 20 percent are now available in electronic form. AP

An important book on Geology & Seismology By: Moulana Aneesur Rahman Nadvi This book expounds the subject matter of geology, particularly, the erruption of earthquakes and volcanoes in the light of Qur’an and Hadith. It explains that there exists a complete conformity between modern geological facts and findings and the statements of Hadith with regard to the eruption of earthquakes. It covers vast topics on geology including the discovery of Mount Qaf, a mountain which is encircling the planet earth and its effectiveness in the occurrence of earthquakes as it has been described in Hadiths. Some of the reviews on this book are given below: Pages: 116 Price: 130/“This book would make an interesting addition to the English-speaking Muslim’s library ...
