From The Producers Welcome to our 19th annual show! It is amazing how each year it feels like a brand new show, and yet seems so familiar. Our sincere thanks to the literally hundreds of individuals and companies whose commitment and support make this show possible. The support we receive from our numerous Sponsors, Media Sponsors and Honorary Committee members sustains our efforts. And a huge thanks to our staff, crew, builders and all those who work behind the scenes to make this show a reality for you. This year, we are thrilled to offer the Gala Preview as a benefit for McMullen Museum of Art, which does the kind of groundbreaking exhibitions that make Boston a world-class city, and which expands the richness of our cultural heritage to new audiences, both on and off the Boston College campus. One last important note, please remember that without our exhibitors and galleries we could not have a show. Encourage them to continue to bring the best to Boston with your purchases!

Tony Fusco and Robert Four, Co-Producers

From Nancy Netzer, Director, McMullen Museum, Boston College The McMullen Museum of Art at Boston College is honored to be the beneficiary of this year’s BIFAS preview gala and extends thanks to the organizers and patrons of this important event. In September 2016 the McMullen will open its doors in a new, expanded, location at Boston College. The facility at 2101 Commonwealth Avenue with easy access to public transportation and convenient parking for visitors will be housed in the former residence of Boston’s cardinal archbishop built in 1927 and designed in the style of a Roman Renaissance palazzo by the renowned architects Maginnis and Walsh. Thanks to a generous lead gift from the McMullen Family Foundation, over the past two years, the building has been renovated by DiMella Shaffer architects to house state-of-the-art galleries with moveable walls, administrative and teaching spaces, and, on its first floor, gracious meeting and reception rooms displaying paintings from the Museum’s permanent collection. A glass-enclosed addition to the building, exhibiting the triptych of windows by John La Farge that was featured at BIFAS in 2013 before its restoration, will provide a dramatic entrance and added amenities for visitors. Past exhibitions at the McMullen have focused on artists like Klee, Munch, Matta, Rouault, Lam, and Courbet as well as on thematic investigations of works from the classical, medieval, Renaissance, and baroque periods. The McMullen Museum will continue to play a major role in the cultural life of Boston College, and of the broader community of scholars and art enthusiasts, by organizing the type of world-class exhibitions that break new ground from an interdisciplinary perspective. The collaborative ethos of McMullen exhibitions will be evident in its first at 2101 Commonwealth Avenue, Pages from the Past: Illuminated Manuscripts in BostonArea Collections. Curated by five Boston-based medievalists, each of the exhibition’s three sections will be displayed at a different venue around the city, the McMullen, the Houghton Library at Harvard University, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. We invite you to visit the McMullen and to participate in our programming, which remains free to all.

SUNDAY OCTOBER 25 – TWO AMERICAN MASTERS 2:00pm Special Guest Speaker "Yours Sincerely, John S. Sargent" In celebration of the recent gift to the museum of the John Singer Sargent Archive by Jan and Warren Adelson and Richard and Leonee Ormond, the current MFA exhibition "Yours Sincerely, John S. Sargent" brings the painter to life through his letters, photographs and sketches. Join Erica Hirshler, Croll Senior Curator of American Paintings at the MFA, for an intimate look at one of Boston’s most beloved artists.

3:00pm Special Guest Speaker "The Light of Memory: John La Farge and Stained Glass" John La Farge’s windows are notable not only for their technical innovations, but also represent an unusually sophisticated understanding of the historical role of the medium and the aesthetic issues raised by the experience of viewing stained glass. La Farge carefully considered how his windows would be perceived and understood as a sign of the sacred, and anticipated key aspects of modern art theory. The presentation will be illustrated with photos of stained glass in New England. Presented by Jeffery Howe, curator of the exhibition, "John La Farge and the Recovery of Sacred", currently on view at the McMullen Museum of Art, Devlin Hall, Boston College.
