Protest: Fight the Power

Zellig at The Custard Factory, Digbeth, Birmingham 3 – 30 June 2010 bassfestival.co.uk BASS Festival premieres a startling, and previously banned, collection of propaganda material at the Custard Factory. The posters reflect over two decades of social unrest and street fighting culminating in a controversial exhibition of visuals by graphic designers from around the world. Having toured Africa and Asia as part of a British Council-sponsored show it is finally heading to the UK having been banned previously. Political poster art has helped mobilise the masses for years. Images like that calling for a Trafalgar Square demonstration against Margaret Thatcher’s poll tax in 1990 led people to rally behind the cause. The propaganda spans issues as diverse as the countries of origin including the campaigns to free Nelson Mandela from unfair imprisonment in South Africa to the satirical images aiming to undermine race and gender stereotypes. Taking place for the fifth consecutive year, BASS Festival is the UK’s only month-long celebration of Black music and art. 04

Big up ma streetdance moves. Brap!

Does going to the gym make you groan? Can just the thought of a silent, contemplative yoga class make you snore? Spinning classes, 5K runs and 50 lengths of the local pool; they soon become depressingly repetitive. Boring. We all know we need to keep fit and most of us have a few stubborn pounds here and there we would love to budge, but exercise can be a chore we find too easy to avoid. Which is why so many of us fail to do it or embark on short bursts of enthusiastic participation quickly followed by complete disinterest. However, a 012

group of dancers in Birmingham have found that elusive exercise Nirvana. They just can’t wait to put on a hoody with some baggy joggers and shake their increasingly toned booties at weekly adult streetdance classes. “I’ve gone to high impact gym classes before and I’ve found excuses not to go,” Lisa Kavanagh-Taylor, 30, admits. “With streetdancing I find excuses to go.” Fresh Vibes launched adult streetdancing classes in Birmingham in October 2009. The classes arrived to the rapturous delight of a waiting

list of aspiring streetdancers, all eager to emulate Cheryl Cole’s energetic routines, Beyonce’s mesmerising moves and Usher’s urban swagger. Emma Whelan, 21, had been on the look out for streetdancing classes for a while. “On the television and lately in more and more films, you see streetdancing and you think ‘wow, I wish I could dance like that’”, she says. “I chose street because it’s so energetic, it’s more of a technique I can use, rather than ballroom, which just isn’t really me.” And who doesn’t love to dance like they just don’t care? Given a few glasses of a favourite alcoholic tipple, a sweaty club dance floor and some enticing hip hop beats, most of us seamlessly transform into self-appointed dancing queens. Streetdance classes bring this feeling of smiley upbeat energy to exercise. But for many of us over the age of 18, the thought of streetdance lessons unleashes a swirling mass of insecurities. Will the class be full of teenage urban trendy types? Is a first class degree in Pineapple Dance Studio style bitching more essential than a sense of rhythm? Will I injure some poor, unsuspecting classmate with my uncoordinated but extravagant technique and get banned from dancing in public ever again? Well you can breathe a sigh of relief; Fresh Vibes classes are not like that. The school is based on a philosophy that everyone should have the

opportunity to streetdance regardless of age or ability. At the first class, Krissy, the effervescent Birmingham instructor firmly asserts: “The first Fresh Vibes rule is to have fun. The second is to encourage and support each other and the third is absolutely no cattiness.” This instantly puts everyone at ease and in the right mindset to enjoy the hour ahead. Over an eight-week term, each class learns a professionally choreographed, booty shaking, hair flicking, nonchalantly shoulder shrugging, hip hop dance routine. And after each class the dancers leave energised and invigorated by the challenge of learning the routine. “The day after class I’m doing the moves at the bus stop,” 30 year old Angela Slater says with a smile. “Streetdancing occupies your mind and your body. To remember the choreography you just have to switch every other thought off because you can only concentrate on the moves. It’s a release.” “I can’t imagine not wanting to do it,” adds 37 year old streetdancer, Rachel Purnell. “I’ve been streetdancing since October and I can’t imagine not wanting to carry on.” And that’s not something many of us can honestly say about a sweaty session of body combat. TENNY TEN

Tennyten.com / myspace.com/10shott Your first track Swaggnificent comes out the 20th June how have you found the process? Its been brilliant. It is the first track to be taken from the album. It’s an anthem describing the journey I have taken in the music business – doors opening and shutting on me. We have just finished filming the video which you will be able to catch on all good virals. Is it important for you to give the fans a good show? Yeah it’s massive, it’s part of who I am - a showman. In all of my shows I want people to come away saying the music and the show is something they will remember. Theatrics are a big part of that. In 014

‘Jump Jump’ me and Bigg Wayne play out someone threatening to commit suicide. The theatre and the lyrics keep the audience’s attention and we have got a lot of good comments about that part of the show. You are from Wolverhampton how do you think the area has helped shape you as an artist? With my musical career Wolverhampton can sometimes indicate the end of a dream for some... but for me it kinda’ gave me the inspiration to try harder, to persevere and say ‘Yeah man I can get myself supporting a tour’. And now I’m touring with Mr Hudson and Chipmunk - a little kid from Wolverhampton that was my dream. There is much in your music about your upbringing and your experiences with gun culture and losing friends. It all forms emotion in your tracks. Was that something that you were keen to convey? It’s a small city [Wolverhampton] and everyone is up in everyone’s business and I have had friends that have been injured or killed by guns. Big Wayne’s brother was shot. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It’s these sorts of things that I wanna address with the kids that there is more to life

than gunning and doing nothing. You gotta’ set these targets and stick to it and they will lead the way. You can be what you want to be. A lot of the school kids do what their brothers do you know drug-dealing stuff like that. I’m out there trying to tell the kids I’m doing it, I’m touring with Mr Hudson and Chipmunk. I’ve done it you can do it too! One of your tracks Tin Soldiers covers events in the Iraq War – is that an important issue for you? I had a friend in the Iraq War who hated it and never understood what he was fighting for or what he was doing there so that inspired me to write the track. He joined up ‘cus he had nothing else to do and now he’s fighting for a cause he doesn’t understand or believe in the politics involved. I don’t believe in politics anymore from what I have seen nothing changes and it never will. I didn’t dream I’d be where I am now and everyday something new comes along and shocks me. So I’m like ‘yeah man it’s happening!’ Catch Tenny Ten play The Big Fest with Tinie Tempah, Wiley + Mclean and more at Civic Hall on the 27th June. LH

JAH SHAKA

The Rainbow Warehouse Digbeth, Birmingham 25 June bassfestival.co.uk Jah Shaka is considered the forefather of UK Dub and he’s bringing his infamous soundsystem to Birmingham’s Rainbow Warehouse as part of BASS Festival. Having learned his musical trade in the 1970s, Jah Shaka has been on a nonstop exploration into roots and culture. His trademark thunderous bass, howling sirens and single-deck turntable means that witnessing a Shaka dub session is like having your senses assaulted with deep, heavy, heavy bass! Pretty much every single person, without exception, who has produced dub music, or started a roots sound system in the past 20-years has been influenced by Shaka. His dances have become infamous for their stomach churning frequencies of bass and ear piercing sirens. Your ears will be ringing for days afterwards, but it’ll be worth every second.

Andy Bell Andy Bell is perhaps best know for his time in the enigmatic band Erasure. An 80’s and gay icon (although he may dispute the 80’s part somewhat), he returns with his second solo album and shares his hopes for the new record and his plans for the future of Erasure. You’ve got your new album coming out the June 7th - Non-Stop, is that indicative of the way you see your career going? Yeah you know it’s just kinda really a nod to Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret...Electro disco that sort of thing. It’s kind of a development on that idea. How does it feel now being on your own? It’s fine. I mean last time when I did the Electro Blue record it was with two other guys so I kind of had those two in tow. But as Pascal is a producer and writer he’s not around because he is working with people so I do miss him being there when I’m promoting, and especially touring, but now that I am doing the DJ thing it pays for my air fares so I am able to do all the PA (personal appearance) things so in some ways it’s nice being on your own. So it’s not like your missing an arm then? No it’s very character building. I love Pascal and I love working with him. It’s great, but it’s just nice to go off and do your own sort of thing. And in Pascal you have kind of found someone very similar to Vince... Yeah I was on tour with Pascal when he was in a band called Peach and he worked on some tracks with us years ago, and he’s Cancerian as well so he is the same as Vince and they both have this really strong, methodical work ethic and we just kinda clicked. Pascal is quite camp as well, like Vince. He’s straight but he’s very open and I love that. With the solo endeavour are you hoping to emulate the success of Erasure or define yourself as a solo artist? It’s sort of like when George Michael released Listen Without Prejudice, it’s that kind of vibe of not taking myself too serious. I love Erasure and we have got a great reputation but I don’t want to get stuck under an 80’s tag even though our first hit didn’t really come until ‘89 and we had more success in the 90’s...because of the sound we were branded an 80’s band. So it’s trying to shake that off. In some ways it’s a blessing in disguise because when people recap on that period they only play one or two of the more famous tracks which gives me the chance to re-define myself with a new generation. 021

MUSIC

Does it feel like it has been 20 years since the origins of Erasure? Its been a blessing. You don’t realise it when you’re 21 and fresh. It’s not until you are 40 that you realise how ageist the whole scene is. How hard it is to get past all that. Our boss at Mute Records told us that once you hit 50 you’ll be fine...you’re established; once you hit 50 you’re in there! I’m over it now though - I had my midlife crisis through the middle of last year. What performers do you like at the moment? I like to go on iTunes and have a scour around. I have just been listening to a band called S**t Robot and a band who came out in 1985 called Kano...it’s fantastic...like hallowed disco music. I love going on there as it reminds me of being in a record shop. I like it because I can look back at people from the past and get all nostalgic wondering what these people are doing now. One of the current albums I love is Amy Stewarts’. Her album is so beautiful - like hymns really. You mentioned iTunes being your equivalent to a record shop but lately there has been a revival of record shops, supported by various artists. You come from an era where they were the place to buy records, how do you feel about a possible revival? Well I’m hoping for a resurgence in them as it increasingly becomes the ‘hipster’ thing to do. With people like Blur releasing new and old tracks on vinyl, hopefully it will inspire people to buy them more because they are so beautiful...the colours and the smell. What are your future plans with Erasure? We were going to put out a new record at the end of the year but thankfully they have put it back to next year. We are mid writing me and Vince...mid flow...meeting in London and New York and recording whenever we can. We have 19 songs or so but I’m waiting to be inspired with the lyrics – sometimes I get lazy with lyrics. I can’t uniform my writing style I just write as and when inspiration comes to me. Actually it’s nice to hear a Midlands accent...I love the Midlands. Brummies are so friendly. It’s great every time I am up there cus you’re right in the centre and there is always something happening and something new all the time. It’s a fabulous place! So there you have it – Andy Bell loves Brummies, is still committed to Erasure and has his second solo album ‘Non-Stop’ is out now. Having heard what it has to offer a tour is almost certainly forthcoming and well worth the admission price. LH

FESTIVALS If you are baffled as to what to spend your ticket money on this year let us help. HAIRSPRAY

Wolverhampton Grand Theatre, Lichfield Street, WV1 1DE 1 – 19 June grandtheatre.info John Waters’ story of a big girl with big hair, and an even bigger heart, has been drawing huge audiences since it turned from film to stage in 2007 in the UK. The story follows Tracy Turnblad as she wins a spot on the local TV dance programme, The Corny Collins Show and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a trendsetting hair-hopper like Tracy get her massively shy Mom out of the apartment, beat evil Amber to be crowned Miss Hairspray, integrate Corny’s show for good AND win the heart of local heartthrob Link Larkin, all without denting her ‘do? The three-week Wolverhampton stint of this massively popular hit stars entertainer Brian Conley as Edna Turnblad (Tracy’s larger than life laundryloving mother) and comedian and actor Les Dennis as Wilbur Turnblad (Tracy’s Joke Shop owning father). The Theatre will also host a free ‘Hairspray Day’ on Friday 4 June from 11am3pm at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. 038

CLAiRe BisseLL

Mad Elizabeth - Reworked Vintage Clothing madelizabeth.co.uk Over the last few years the vintage fashion scene has taken on some momentum and Birmingham offers a great place to purchase unique finds. One of our favourites is the Saturday Flea which takes place every week at the Custard Factory and is also where you can find Claire Bissell and her brand Mad Elizabeth. Inbetween studying for her MA in Fashion Promotion at Birmingham Institute of Art and Design Claire manages to squeeze in her new venture, which she has started with a friend, specialising in vintage and reworked vintage clothing, as well as accessories.

“We both love vintage clothing and decided we’d like to try and set up our own business doing something we enjoy. We adjust a lot of the clothing ourselves to bring them up-to-date and more wearable. Vintage items can sometimes be very beautiful but not very practical because they are either too long or they don’t fit quite right.” They started the stall at the Saturday Flea Market and are now selling at lots of the bigger vintage fairs all over the country. “We are hoping to have an online shop very soon and eventually a living, breathing shop somewhere in Birmingham.” Originally from Birmingham Claire is always discovering something new about the city. “There’s plenty going on to keep me out of trouble. The central location also makes it easy to visit my friends who are scattered all over the country.” Favourite places to eat? Café soya in China Town Favourite place to go for a drink? The Victoria and Snobs Favourite Birmingham attraction? The Electric Cinema Favourite place to shop? Cow Vintage and the Saturday Flea Market of course 041

BOSTIN T-SHIRTS Bostin.bigcartel.com

Bostin T’s are fast earning themselves a revered reputation around the country with their brand of tongue-in-cheek T-shirt designs. Thanks partly to the recent spate of famous Brummies sporting their goods, from soul sensation Beverley Knight to the ITV’s Adrian Chiles, Bostin T’s are popping up all over the place. Started a decade ago, the brand is the brainchild of by Donato Esposito who loved the positive nature of the word ‘bostin’ so much that he decided to create a T-shirt company that reflected the feel good ethos the name inspires. The brand has seen a rapid growth in sales due to its diverse range and innovative self-deprecating humour, playing on many of the stereotypes of Brummies 042

throughout the region. During the recent election campaign they threw their political hat into the ring with a series of satirical T’s comprising the Election Collection. The expansion of the brand includes brilliant Black Country observations ‘Oss’ (Horse), Yam-Yam, and our personal favourite – a take on the iconic I ‘heart’ NYC to I ‘Heart’ Tipton. Bostin is currently working with the team behind Birmingham’s City of Culture bid by creating a T-Shirt that embodies what people believe defines Birmingham as a city of culture.

World Cup 2010 Your guide to where to watch the matches during June O2 Academy - Horsefair, Bristol Street o2academybirmingham.co.uk Better known for gigs, O2 is promising “no nonsense football coverage in a friendly environment, with a stadium atmosphere”. All England games will be projected onto the big screen, with commentary through a state of the art sound system. Entry is free. Odeon Cinema - New Street odeon.co.uk Get the full cinematic experience live at the Odeon, Sit back grab some popcorn and soak up the atmosphere as you watch England on the Big Screen, all for the price of a normal ticket. Broadway Casino - Broadway Plaza broadwaycasino.co.uk Celebrate the World Cup in style at our favourite Casino. Featuring a multi-screen lounge, so you won’t miss out on any of the action, you can also have a flutter on the bustling gaming floor. To celebrate an England win how about dinner at the in house restaurant? The Victoria - John Bright Street thevictoriabirmingham.co.uk If you’re one of those people who really doesn’t see the point in a load of grown men chasing a ball up and down a field then you’ll be pleased to know that the downstairs of the Victoria is a football free zone! Upstairs isn’t of course, with bottle bear bucket deals so you can stay glued to the 8ft screens, and hope and pray that this is the year when footballs coming home. Riley’s -Throughout the West Midlands rileys.co.uk Football isn’t the first sport you think of when you think of Riley’s but you may be surprised to find more than just snooker tables. With 3metre HD surround sound screens in all their flagship clubs, and the exciting introduction of 3D TV, this is a fantastic place to catch the World Cup and entertain yourself with a game of pool at half time. 065
