Welcome to Ransom

What do the Interest & Reading Ages mean?

Ransom's books are designed to help people learn to read English and develop their reading skills, regardless of their ability or attitude.

All our books have an interest age. The interest age is the age that the book was written to appeal to. Our books also have a reading age. The reading age is about matching the book to the reading level of the reader. So, if a nine-year-old child is reading at the level of an average seven-year-old, a book with an interest age of 8–12 years and a reading age of 6–7 years will be suitable for them.

What do the Accelerated Reader levels mean?

Many of our books are quizzed for Accelerated Reader (AR), a system used in some schools to support children’s reading development.

The books are independently levelled for AR, giving each title an interest level and a book level. Children can then progress through the levels. To browse our books by AR level, turn to page 40.

What do the Book Band colours mean?

Another way to level books is by Book Band. The Book Band system is an official scheme used in the UK and other countries.

There are 11 official levels that all UK educational publishers work to. Each level, or band, has been given a colour (Pink through to Lime), and children progress through these bands. Publishers have added extra levels: Lilac, for wordless books, as well as colours following Lime. The chart below shows you the average age of children at each of the Book Band levels. Learning To Read

Learning to read requires the right books at the right times.

From the very beginnings of learning the letters of the alphabet, to becoming a fully independent reader, Ransom Reading Stars books are carefully designed to support children on their reading journey.

The programme is divided into three stages to support this reading journey: Alpha Stars, Reading Stars Phonics, and Reading Stars Book Bands. Alpha Stars is a good base to start from, introducing children to the 26 letters and the 23 core sounds of the English alphabet. Children then move on to learn the building blocks of written English, which is phonics. In England and Wales it is now compulsory for all children to be taught using a structured phonics programme. Ransom’s phonics books introduce the letters and sounds as they are learnt weekby-week in each phase of the UK Government's ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme. As is vital when learning with phonics, there are no ‘unfamiliar words’ in our books. Our books rigorously follow ‘Letter and Sounds’, and only include words covered in that programme. Once phonics has been mastered, children can move on to building their literacy skills using Book Bands for guided reading. I was privileged to work with the late Shirley Bickler, co-author of the Book Bands scheme. With her guidance and expertise I have been able to ensure that all our books are meticulously written, designed and levelled.
