Electrode Block The electrode block houses the upper electrode (longer) and the lower electrooe (shorter), as well as the upper and lower lamp The electrodes are sel at a precise distance from each other to create the arc needed 10 melt the glass of the fibers being spliced. A rtOmlal splice uses a 30,OOOV (starting voltage) at 16.3mA arc. Different types of fibers may reqUire a higher Of lower current Jevel. Some may require thallhe arc remain 00 for a longer or shorter length of time 10 get the best spUce results. Therefore the fusioo current and fusion time are Independently sel in each Splice program_ The electrode block is adjustable in !he X and Y-aKis to center the fiber In the arc. ThiS is a entical adjustment for optimal splice results . If the fibers are not centered between the electrodes, the arc can push the fibers and cause core bending (micro bending) or uneven diffusion. The block is mounted to an "l" shaped !>facllet that is adjustable vertically by two screws in bacII of the block. The two screws that hold the electrode block to the bonom 01 the "L" bracket adjust the block horizontally. Each adjustment is made by loosening the screws and moving the block along the eloogated hole wtlich the screws pass through The lower electrode is In a fi~ed position in the block The upper electrode clamp IS mounted by two screws and is adjustable to center the two electrodes to each other and set the correct distance between the etectrode tips . This distance is critical to the shape and stability of the

'"

The electrode block also houses the upper and lower lamps The lamps are mounted on a CIrcuit board. which is mounted to the bonom o f the electrode block.. The lamps are red LEO's on 975'5. 995's and most later 925's. Earlier spticers used whi te incalldescent lamps. The LED's are used to illuminate the upper and lower views of the fibers fOf alignment

The Optical Path •

The optic;al path eonsists of two views of the fiber, the upper and lower view. The view thai is displayed Is determined by which of the lamps (upper or lower) is lit. In the HOI Image (during splicing), both views are d isplayed simultaneously.

The mirrors used in the machine have the reflecti ve surface exposed on the fronl of the glass to prevent shadowing of Ihe Images. Care must be taken when clean ing as this surface can be easily scratched. The Upper View The upper lamp illumina te s the fiber from behil'ld the fiber (from the rear of the splicer), It uses the lower lens barrel (Iooger), which is adjustable via a focus motor to keep the fibers in focus during alignment. From the lens. the ligh t is reflected from mirTOf " 2 to the beam splitter or optICal prism that passes light in one direction and refl6(:ts light in another. The light is then reflected from mirrors # 3 and Ii 4 to the CCO chip (camera) The L ower View The lower lamp illuminates the fiber from underneath. II then uses mirror # 1 and the upper lens barrel (shofter). From the lens the light passes through the beam splitter (optical prism), then to mirrors II 3 and It 4 and finally to the CCO chip (camera). In some cases a filter may be installed between the upper lens barrel and the beam splitter 10 balance the light level between the two views. The Optical Unit The optical unit consists of the upper and tower lens barrels. focus motors. the beam spliner. and mirrors #1 and #2. The optical UOll may be moved up and down on a rail to POSItion the upper view correctly In the monitor. Mirror # 1 will adjust the lower \/lew \0 the correct position. The CCO Chip (camera) There are three types of cameras used in the 905, 925, 975. and 995 splicers . The Phillips is the oldest of these. It is easily recognize<! In that the camera is not mounted directly to its control board. Loolong from the front of Ihe machme the control board will be to the left of the camera assembly. The Phillips camera uses white incandescent lamps. The Thomsson camera is mounte<! to its control board. The Thomsson camera can use either red LED's or white lamps. The Sony is the newest camera used. It is also the only came ra used in the 915 and 995 splicers. It is mounted on its oonlroi board and has a silver dot in the lower left comer The Sony camera is used only with the red LEO· s. The CCD Chip captures the images of the fiber in both the Cold Image (for alignment and evaluation of cleave angles. view angles. and fiber cleanliness) and the Hot Image (for estimahon and splicing process control)

The Monitor The monitor dIsplays the upper and lower VIeWS of the fiber one at a time as seen by the CGD chip While the floors are being aligned the upper view IS seen on top and the klwer VIew is on bot1om. In the upper view the left fiber is stationary. The machine \\;11 move the right fiber up or down as need e<! to align with the left fiooL In the lower view the nght fiber is stationary. The machine will move the teft fiber front 10 rear to align it 'Mlh the right fiber. This appears to be an up and clown movement in the monitor. The middle of the monitor screen IS al 255 pixe ls. The splicer will align the fibers in both views at the 2SS-pixelline shown in the middle of the screen in the diagram. Once aligned splICIng will begin. With the machine in "service mode" a grid can be brought up to show where the camera e~ls

\0 see the upper and io'Ner vie w positions. This grid is also used to adjust each of the mirrors to align arid center the VIew of the fibers in the camera. The monitor also displays text messages. menus. graphs. and store<! Images. These features allow the user to select and edit splice programs. set up and use special splicer features. observe an estimate of splice loss. and diagnose splice defects. Images capture<! during the splicing procedure are used to calculate loss estimation. While the arc IS active, the lamps are turned off. The hea t of the arc causes the dopants in the fiber to emit light by incandescence and fluorescence. Nonnally. the core of tne fiber has the greatest concentra!JOn of dopants and will be ~sible as a bright line in the Hot Image. It is important to note that the bright line Visible along the fibor in lhe Cold Image 1$!1Q1. the cOle - it is an opltGal effect k.nown 9$ lhe Lens Effect Line. By analyzing the image of the core In the Hot Image the machine can calCUlate the loss that has occurred at the splice junction. These images are stored in memory and can be viewed in the monitor after splicing is finished. USIng the informatlOO taken from the splice program and from the Hot Images the machine will show the estimated klss in dB units at the bottom of the monitor.
