FUTURE CHAMPIONS GOLF MAGAZINE
Dear Junior Golf Community,
It’s hard to believe this is already our 20th year operating Future Champions Golf programs and the start of our 16th full year hosting multi day golf tournaments. Thank you all for your support of the Tour and the programs that we offer. 2023 looks to be an exciting year of growth on all levels of the Tour. We are expanding Tournament Operations in other regions of the United States. We have partnered with more than 30 other tours around the world for qualifying events to bring the best players in the world to the 15th Annual FCG Callaway World Junior Golf Championship that will be played July 17-19, 2023. We are excited to announce this year’s event will feature 850 junior golfers ages 7-18 from over 50 countries and will be played on 12 Championship Golf Courses. We will also have a new host hotel for this year’s event.
Other exciting things to note is the return of all of our FCG World Series Events with several new events including an event at the #1 course in Arkansas. We have established the FCG Iconic Ocean Series that will feature our best world series events held at courses along the ocean. Stay tuned for more about that exciting event.
Also this year we are starting the FCG International Team Championship that will be played a few days prior to the start of the FCG International Championship. Did you know the FCG international is the largest annual OPEN event in junior golf? This means you can just sign up and play in one of the world’s largest and most exciting world events in junior golf. You do however need to meet the scoring requirements listed on the website.
There is so much more to talk about but we will announce more in future emails and on our blog and social media. Stay connected with us on the blog, here in our monthly magazine, and our new podcast which kicks off later this month again for 2023! If you have any questions or comments please contact us anytime. We want to be your favorite junior golf and college golf program.

Gearhart Golf links
By Dean GregoryOn the North Oregon Coast is where you will find dramatic ocean scenery. You will also find Gearhart Golf Links which is approximately 20 miles southwest of the town of Astoria (Film location of the 1985 movie “The Goonies”). This is where you could literally feel like you stepped into the past as the course officially established in 1892, making it the “Oldest Continual Golf Course West of the Mississippi”.
The clubhouse is also a unique sight to see as well. On the exterior you’ll have the vintage feel of being on the coast when you see the older looking weathered shingled building. The pro shop is not a slick resort retail looking space. Instead, you’ll find a comfortable shop that has the latest golf equipment alongside some souvenirs and memorabilia of the course and its history. When you walk through the shop, you enter a slight hallway to what seems like a time travel portal. You won’t see a bistro or a coffee shop with a bar. Instead, you will be welcomed by truly vintage looking Scottish faire, The Sand Trap Pub just to add to the experience. Imagine all of this and you haven’t even stepped on the course yet.
Now on to the golf course. The first thing you will notice is that there is a lack of trees on the course. After being present for seven decades, the dying and dead trees were removed for safety reasons only to reveal the natural rolling terrain of sand dunes. With the openness of the course, it gives you different angles to approach each hole. Which is helpful in avoiding the small bunkers that are strategically placed in fairways and near greens. The greens are small, fast, and firm. Tee boxes were placed to give you an adventure on every hole. And of course, you can’t talk about the course without mentioning the weather. Although it doesn’t lie adjacent to the Pacific Ocean, it still gets affected by coastal weather. Depending on the time of year, the weather will always be a factor in how the course will play.
Come November 4 & 5, 2023, players will be able to compete in the FCG National Tour Pacific Northwest Finale. This is the latest addition to the FCG Iconic Ocean Series.
FCG NATIONAL TOUR PACIFIC NORTHWEST FINALESmeal’s Coaching Tips
SUMMER IS JUST ABOUT HERE - ARE YOU READY?
Summer is the best time of year for competitive junior golf. Most of the big events are annually staged in the summer months as school is out and now it’s time to compete with less distractions. So how do you be fully ready for the busy summer season?
PLAN AHEAD
Tournaments are filling up at a record pace with the growth of competitive junior golf. Make sure you register early and plan your summer well in advance to not miss out. Do your best to play events that you will have time to prep for with practice round or rounds and proper spacing between events for travel. Team up with other players and families to travel together sometimes. Make it fun for everyone involved.
GET YOUR GAME READY
As in last month’s article it is time to be “firing on all cylinders” and have your game razor sharp to compete. It is tough to be in the middle of a swing change or in full on Technical Training during summer. Finalize that part of the process and get to the important things now of being fully dialed in. Work on tightening your shot dispersion so you know where your good shots are and where hopefully your one miss is. Make sure you practice contact and hitting the sweet spot every time. Perfect your “GO TO” shot for those pressure situations or those times where you aren’t feeling your best and you can still get the job done. Spend more time chipping and pitching and working on distance control with your wedges so every yardage you have you have a plan for and a feel for. Write these down if you need to. Work on lag putting so you have more tap ins from long range and remove some of the stress from playing. Make 100 3 footers everyday so you feel great about those short putts. Practice from the shortest tees at your home course and get used to making a lot of birdies in a round so you are comfortable going low. Plan some “throw-away” tournaments that you use to simply gather information for the bigger events. Enjoy the journey and treat yourself well this summer. You will have some tougher days so roll with the punches and make the best of it.

A LIFE LONG FRIENDSHIP
By Dennis MurphyThere is a saying in our cancer community, “Get’s it”! When you live in the cancer bubble, at FOJ it’s a special feeling when someone genuinely feels the pain for these children battling the beast and act on thier own behalf to make a difference. Dean Myrick and Blake Lewis did just that. Dean is the Commissioner of Alabama Community College Conference, when he heard of FOJ’s program and the adopt a chlid program he “ACTED”. That’s what “Leaders” do! He immediately reached out and said let’s get this program going in the ACCC- yesterday! First head coach he called was Blake Lewis, then head coach of Lawson State CC and now Athletic Director of Gadson State CC in Alabama. Blake set up adoption with his baseball team and even had Cynthia Anthony, president of LSCC attend. Inspiring hearing Blake’s perspective on the journey.
“I was made aware of FOJ by the ACCC Commissioner, Dean Myrick. Dean reached out asking if I would have any interest in being apart of the mission of FOJ. After watching the HBO special and gaining a greater understanding of what FOJ stood for, I knew it was something that I wanted my team and my own family to be apart of.
It wasn’t long after that, Denis and his staff reached out to me with a family who needed some support. I was excited and nervous at the same time because I wasn’t sure what to expect.
Once the family and I got connected, they shared with me their story. Moved, inspired, empathetic, sympathetic, are just a few emotions I had run over me when they shared with me what they have been going through and what they have to look forward to each day. I knew then, this opportunity was going to
be special. How special? I didn’t realize the impact that was coming.
On adoption day, I knew I wanted it to be fun. We were adding a new family to our team. I didn’t realize how special it was going to be for me personally and for every single person within the team. Once we were able to introduce the family to our team, you started seeing this special life changing impact begin. It was actually a game day for us and for a second, I wasn’t sure if our guys were ever going to leave the gym to go play their game because they were having so much fun playing with our newest team member. Guys were coming up to me taking about how much they were inspired by this 5 year old. I started seeing this special life changing impact begin weaving its way through our team. One of my players came up to me and started telling me how special this day was for him to be apart of. The joy that came across the kids and the families faces will be something I will never forget. I can’t tell you for sure if lives were changed that day, but I can guarantee that lives were positively impacted that day.
Denis and the FOJ staff were amazingly helpful throughout the process. A partnership didn’t just form with this process but a life long friendship”.
When you see leaders like ACCC Commissioner Dean Myrick and Gadson State Athletic Director Blake Lewis making a difference with their “Can-Do” attitude and actions it is beyond heart warming, gratifying and life changing. You can add Ultimate NEDvocate to these two angels from Alabama.
However, the hope FOJ sews into the lives it touches is not limited to direct teammates – the raw magic of the organization continues to flourish. Hayden Hollen, Peter’s sister, was no stranger to FOJ or the name Jose as their stories of connection, emotion and wisdom carried into dinner table conversations. Hayden vividly remembers her brothers coming home from lacrosse practice and lighting up as they recited stories and shared interactions with their teammate Jose. She will never forget the day that her brothers came home from the hospital after Jose’s passing. Not only had Jose’s life, story, and spirit been imprinted on her brothers’ lives but she was touched by the angel of Jose. Hayden was a silent observer and supporter as her brother continued to tread a path with FOJ, still in awe at the magic it brought her brothers Peter, Henry and Porter and their respective sports teams.

I have been exposed and blessed to meet some incredible human beings on this journey. From all walks of life, cancer knows no zip code and doesn’t discriminate. We met Stacia Boyton at a cancer event in Mass after Jaclyn was diagnosed with her malign brain tumor. After meeting her parents Matt and Suzanne, I knew why she was different from all her other peers at her age. There is a saying in our cancer community, “Get’s it”! Stacia demonstrated she “Get’s it” by her actions. Blessed to have Stacia on our journey improving the quality of life for children battling the beast.
“In the year 2007, I developed a newfound passion for working with children living with brain tumors. My passion was sparked when I met a young girl named Jaclyn Murphy and learned more about her family’s mission. I have spent many years working to help grow this foundation through volunteer and then ultimately became a member of the foundations team. During this time worked with hundreds of families from around the world addressing the fears and traumas they faced
I worked closely with these families to help create a therapeutic healing process. Having this experience helped me to understand how challenging it is to live with childhood cancer. In conjunction to dealing with the effects of a brain injury, and how it impacts the entire family. During this time working at Friends of Jaclyn I was in awe at how many different medical professionals, doctors’ visits, and supports families living with cancer encounter during a diagnosis of a young one. I would spend hours on the phone each week talking with parents, coaches, and kids in the foundation working to understand the needs and supports that would be beneficial for families. What I learned during this process is there is no s tandard because each family has its unique needs. After leaving the foundation I went back to school to earn my Master’s Degree as a Mental Health Counselor with a Specialization in Expressive Arts Therapy at Lesley University. During my educational process I focused on how to use art, music, dance, drama, and play to support kids and families. This expanded my understanding of how trauma affects the brain, body, and family system.
Since becoming an expressive arts therapist I have worked in a variety of settings including after school, inpatient mental health, group and outpatient. I recently opened my own Expressive Arts Studio in Humarock, MA to continue sharing the gifts that the expressive arts modalities provide. Using these modalities offers an opportunity to engage in a creative process to increase one’s ability to connect, create, and regulate. Empowering kiddos to gain mastery in new ways that create sparkly eyed moments, creative expression, and how to regulate their nervous systems not only supports them but also the family. As I continue to grow the studio I hope to provide increased education on the expressive arts, regulation strategies, and honoring my role as a forever Nedvocate. I look forward to welcoming families living with cancer to my studio while also raising awareness on a small community scale”.

ABOUT THE ELITE INVITATIONAL
The Elite Invitational was founded in 2020 by Mason Carmel. A former standout junior golfer, Mason is now a teaching professional instructing junior, collegiate, and professional golfers worldwide. After injuries prevented Mason from pursuing a playing career of his own, he wanted to give back to the game he loves. Drawing on his own experiences, he created a high-level, invitational tournament. The event gives junior golfers the ability to showcase their skills in competitive conditions similar to those they will encounter as their careers progress. With a unique selection process based on a player’s graduating year instead of a player’s age, the tournament poses a different set of challenges than many other junior competitions. This highly ranked event will challenge the best around the world. By trying to emulate PGA/LPGA tour course set-ups, players will get a preview of the higher standard they will encounter as their careers develop and an opportunity to lay the foundation of their legacies. We look forward to hosting you and your family this November.

LESSONS TO WATCH
Chris Smeal was hired to be the primary golf coach for one of the fastest growing golf channels on YouTube: Jerome Rufin - Scratch to Scratch. In just two short months Jerome’s Channel has gone from 0 to over 22,000 subscribers and is growing almost 1,000 subscribers every other day. The channel is documenting the journey of a determined individual trying to start from scratch, and aiming to become a scratch golfer. He is posting every single day on all forms of social media (YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, etc.) around all aspects of the game of golf.
You can watch his work on and off the course including: full swing, short game, mental and physical training, gameplay on the course, and even how he is transforming his entire livelihood in his day to day life to adjust for this journey.
After spending time with several other coaches in the San Diego area, Jerome has selected Chris Smeal to be his primary full swing coach going forward on this journey based on several recommendations and Chris’s ability to get players to scratch. Chris has helped over 170 junior golfers earn college golf scholarships, has coached three players that eventually played in the final match on golf channel at the NCAA division 1 finals, and developed Joey Vrzich who at one point was #1 college golfer in the nation.
Chris will be taking Jerome from his current level and will develop his foundation and accelerate his development through mechanics and his mental approach to the game.

SUMMER MADNESS
By Dean Gregory May 14, 2023The 2022-2023 school year is soon coming to an end. Boys high school golf is wrapping up. Proms are being held. Seniors will be putting on their graduation gowns and for most, you will be seeing the friends made the past few years for the last time. And when the Pomp and Circumstance of the graduation ceremony is over…summer begins.
If you were one of the fortunate ones to be recruited by a college to play, then congratulations. That pressure of playing well in front of coaches is finally gone for both you and your parents. But it doesn’t go away. The next phase of your life begins. One more step forward to adulthood. Yes, an adult, no longer a junior. You will learn to depend on yourself. Make choices you haven’t had to make before. Manage time on your own. Be responsible for your actions. No longer can you blame others if you make a mistake. You will need to adjust to your new environment.
Another adjustment you will need to make is getting to know and living with your new friends, your teammates. In essence, the new family you will travel and play together. Go through good and bad, happy and sad for at least the next four years of your college career.
So, with what will feel like an uncertainty of days, weeks and years to come, take the time in summer to enjoy getting to know yourself. But also remember, you are a student-athlete. Even though the pressure of the recruiting process could be over for you. The fact is you may have been recruited. And if you were, your college coach will expect you to be able to maintain your game.
The bottom line? There are new pressures that you will need to deal with. Take them in stride and always strive to be the best person you can be!
