I am happy to launch the German-Israeli Future Mobility Camp for the third year in a row. The last two events proved that digitalization can open up enormous opportunities for more efficient mobility. But we are only at the beginning. A majority of people still choose to drive to work in a machine of metal, plastic, rubber, and glass run by an engine that burns fossil fuels. Usually they drive alone, although there is space for at least four additional passengers. I am amazed by the creativity of young Germans and Israelis when they look for solutions to make our daily life more sustainable and more comfortable, whether it is by helping to purify the air we breathe in our cities or reduce stress from road traffic. We can count ourselves lucky that they share with us their ideas. The Future Mobility Camp also shows what an embassy can and should deal with in the 21st century. Our Economic and Trade Mission has done a brilliant job and proven that we are not a mere representative body that hosts receptions on national holidays. Our Economic and Trade Mission has established, together with its German and Israeli partners, an event which at its core brings together innovative minds and showcases what the startup landscape in Berlin, Tel Aviv among other places has to offer, and how many of these efforts are worth supporting.
But we do not want to stop at this. Being Israelis, we are never satisfied with what we have already achieved. If you have ideas and suggestions for the future, for other events in different economic fields, please feel free to approach Doron Abrahami, Director of the Economic and Trade Mission, and his team at the event. We can always improve. This goes for mobility as well. With this in mind, I wish you all a highly interesting and fruitful Future Mobility Camp.

Digitalization leads to tremendous transition within the mobility and logistics sector but also within infrastructure businesses. Therefore DB has high potential for innovative technology, new digital services and business opportunities. DB faces digitalization and actively supports digital transition to produce higher quality and provide better services for its customers: today with more than 260 projects on digitalization. Another important focus is the collaboration with startups to discover new solutions for DB and accelerate necessary change for faster innovation. Therefore DB provides a single and transparent company-wide entry: startuprelation.deutschebahn.com. DB mindbox: platform for collaboration with startups Since 2015 startup relations at Deutsche Bahn are bundled in DB mindbox. DB mindbox is more than a physical space with around 700 square meter space for co-working and pitch events in the S-Bahn station JannowitzbrĂźcke in Berlin. It is also the DB platform for collaboration with startups. Here is the space where DB business units and startups exchange and can start to work together. DB mindbox offers three programs to facilitate that collaboration: DB Accelerator, DB Challenges and DB Open Data Activities.

DB Accelerator DB Accelerator is a three months accelerator program that takes place three times a year. Startups receive 25,000 Euro, get office space in the DB mindbox, coaching by betahaus-trainers and mentoring from experts from a DB business unit. The main goal of the program is to advance a prototype or service and adjust it to the special needs of Deutsche Bahn. DB enables real life tests e.g. within a train, at a station or on the track. If DB is convinced by the product or service a longer collaboration can be started.
To find new and promising hardware focused startups DB mindbox also runs the program “hardware.co” together with betahaus Berlin. Due to different search fields corporate partners are selected. The first 10 day pre-accelerator program of hardware.co was on sensors and big data, predictive maintenance and digital services this summer. It was carried out with Siemens, BVG, Bosch, diverse supporters and mentors. Many of the startups had follow ups with the corporate partners to discuss next steps.

DB Challenges Furthermore DB mindbox carries out challenges on specific tasks from DB business units. These DB Challenges are addressed to a wide range of target groups such as developers, scientific institutions, startups, innovation centers of traditional corporates as well as DB internal staff. Everybody can apply and bring in solutions. Three challenges have been successfully executed: the “DB Information:Challenge” - a new design and concept for DB Information and the “DB Information UX:Challenge” about new surfaces for internal and external information systems at DB Information where instructed by DB Station&Service. Project teams now work on the external ideas and build mockups that will be tested at the station Berlin Südkreuz. The latest challenge was the “DB Digital Header:Challenge” about an automated detection of headers, its extraction and the sorted transfer to a DB database. Here the winner, a team from DFKI will work with DB on the automation software for the treatment of about 4 million plans that have to be digitalized and introduced to SAP.

DB Open Data Open Data activities are another part of the DB mindbox portfolio. In close collaboration with DB Systel DB mindbox is publishing data on its brand new DB open data platform to enhance hackers and developers to use these data without any limitations. The external developers can use this data to analyze, enrich or combine it and form new applications. On a regular base new data is published and hackers are invited to hackathons to be the first users of this data. Hackathons take 24 hours and end with the presentation of the best results. Recently the digitalization of elevators (API was published) and luggage lockers (developing hardware and software to transfer lockers into the digital age) were focused.

DB mindbox events In addition, DB mindbox holds events to facilitate networking of startups with DB business units. Meet@mindbox, DB Sundowner and the Future Mobility Camp Berlin are such events that focus on the exchange of startups and DB. Meet@ mindbox has the character of a pitch event with startup fair; the DB Sundowner provides a more personal atmosphere with less participants and intimate exchange; the Future Mobility Camp is open to all players within the mobility sector.

About Capsula Capsula promotes Smart Mobility innovation through research fellowships and startup accelerator residencies. A rapidly unfolding disruption with dramatic impact on economies, societies and the environment, Smart Mobility embeds sensing, cognition and communication in vehicles, fleets and the metropolis for greater efficiency and sustainability. Capsula is a partnership between Tel Aviv University and the Israeli Fuel Choices Initiative at the Prime Minister’s Office. Capsula hosts startups developing novel components, products and services for secure, efficient and sustainable mobility on land, over water and in the air. About the Fuel Choices Initiative The Fuel Choices Initiative, the Israeli government’s program for advancing alternatives fuels and means of transportation, was launched in 2011 as a joint effort by ten government ministries, headed by the Prime Minister’s Office. The program is multidisciplinary in nature and international in scope. It derives from Israel and the world’s strategic need to dramatically decrease reliance on oil in transportation – with all accompanying geopolitical, economic, and environmental implications. The Initiative aims to create a business-supportive environment for the market through simplification of bureaucratic processes, funding of top-notch research, support of international cooperation projects, scientific conferences and exchanges, promotion of relevant industry to investors, services and consultation to municipalities, and backing experimentation and field trials. Raphaël GINDRAT (CEO) - 28 years old, Swiss In January 2014, Raphaël graduated from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). He holds a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization in the field of transportation. He gained his management skills through a minor in Management of Technology and his 2-year term as President of the EPFL Student Association. Raphael’s expertise comes from his early involvement in the world of autonomous mobility. During the last year of his studies, he worked for the EPFL VP, focusing on the European project CityMobil2. His responsibilities were to test and showcase the world’s first driverless shuttle prototype. He also participated in the preparation of the EPFL application for this EU project.
BestMile’s premise is that the future of mobility isn’t in autonomous vehicles themselves, but in what they can offer when they’re operated and managed collectively in an integrated ecosystem. The platform leverages the full potential of autonomous vehicles to tackle urban mobility.
Anne MELLANO (CSO) - 26 years old, Swiss Anne graduated from EPFL in July 2012, also with a Master’s in Civil Engineering with specialization in the field
of transportation. Anne has worked in Lausanne as a Transport Engineer. Her responsibilities there included the project management of two European projects on the development of innovative transport systems. Anne has been awarded the best Women’s Project prize at the alpICT Venture Night in Geneva for her role in BestMile. Leemor CHANDALLY (Strategic Partnerships) – 34 years old, American. Leemor holds a Master’s degree in Urban & Regional Planning from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, and a Bachelor’s degree from McGill University. She has extensive experience in urban revitalization and urban mobility both in the US and abroad. Most recently, she managed the operations of the largest black car company in New York City, evolving the traditional business to be more tech-focused. Combining her background in urban planning and transportation, she joined the BestMile team in May 2016 and is leading the development of strategic partnerships in North America.

GUARDKNOX USP Automotive manufacturers are confronting increasing cyber security threats targeted at vehicles. Understanding that connected cars hacks can kill people, cause very expensive recalls and lead to lawsuits due to manufacturer’s liability, they are seeking solutions to address this growing concern. GuardKnox offers automotive manufacturers a comprehensive hardware cyber security solution, which fits the automotive value chain and alleviates the difficulties of integrating a software solution. It is a proven technology geared specifically for the automotive eco-system. The unique methodology, developed by the GuardKnox team, has been successfully deployed for use in Israel’s Iron Dome and Arrow III missile defense system as well as the Israeli F-35 fighter jet. In a modern car one can find 100-150 different computers (ECUs) interconnected through 5-7 different networks containing over 100 million lines of code. GuardKnox’s solution is a highly secure centralized ECU which provides high assurance defense for vehicle networks. In addition, GuardKnox’s patent pending technology serves as a centralized cyber security platform within the vehicle, providing security services to all ECUs in the vehicle. This leads to consolidation, lower complexity, easier certification and overall cost reduction.
GuardKnox’s hardware solution is the only one which is completely autonomous, doesn’t require any external connectivity nor any updates, and can defend against any type of known or unknown cyber-attacks. It adheres to the most stringent security (ISO 15408) and safety (ISO 26262) standards. As a complete ECU, it integrates seamlessly into the vehicle, into the value chain and vehicle production process. By design, it is completely transparent to all other ECUs and doesn’t require any architectural modification, significantly lowering integration costs. There are approximately 100,000,000 vehicles manufactured annually and many more which are already on the road without cyber protection. RAIL VISION USP Rail safe is a startup company, dedicated to the field of train safety, specializes in automated early warning systems of obstacles, enabling the driver react to the track condition. Rail Safe electro-optic sensor is mounted on the train locomotive and producing high resolution image from up to 2 km distance (much larger than 1.5 km trains maximal breaking distance). The image is not restricted to daylight and atmospheric conditions and works at night and in fog or dust. Sophisticated image processing algorithm analyses the scene, identify any obstacle which poses a threat and alerts the driver and the control center.

Siemens and Start-ups Cooperating, founding and investing Forms of teamwork Siemens has been cooperating with start-ups for 20 years. For Siemens, they are an important indicator of new technology trends and innovative business models. At the same time, Siemens is an attractive partner for start -ups – and not only for financial reasons. Start-ups also benefit from directed access to expertise, market access, and customer contacts. Siemens’ start-up collaboration activity will be bundled within the new unit “next47”. Siemens pursues a threepronged strategy: It cooperates with start-ups, founds start-ups, and invests in start-ups. Cooperation with start-ups: Siemens cooperates with start-ups around the world from its locations in Berkeley, Shanghai, Munich, and in the future Tel Aviv as well. To find the best ideas, our scouts contact more than 1,000 young companies every year, organize conferences such as the New Ventures Forums, attend networking meetings and entrepreneur events, and offer accelerator programs like Frontier. This work results in roughly 20 cooperations per year, which have led to innovative Siemens products that have been protected by more than 100 patents to date. Siemens thus gains access to radical innovations outside the company, which lead to new products, business ideas, and partnerships. Companies like 3D Industries, Modbot, odos and Artiminds stand for cooperation. Foundation of start-ups: Siemens founds start-ups in business segments in which the company is currently not active, but which may be relevant to the company in the future. In this way, Siemens can test new business models quickly and flexibly and even integrate the start-ups into the company at a later time, if useful. The important thing is that the start-ups founded in this way are independent of Siemens. They are managed by experienced “serial entrepreneurs” and Siemens finances them, much like a venture capital investor. Depending on the strategic interest involved, outside co-investors may be brought in as well. To date, more than a dozen start-ups have been founded in this way. Examples are Caterva or Ubimake.
Investments in start-ups: Siemens identifies young companies and finances them in the start-up phase. With offices in the United States, Europe, and Asia, Siemens has invested in innovative start-ups for 20 years already. Having invested more than €800 million in more than 180 start-ups, Siemens was one of the top 10 corporate venture capitalists in 2014. Such investments are primarily made in the fields of industrial software and cyber-security, energy management, mobility management, molecular diagnostics, and point-of-care diagnostics. All these fields are of great importance to Siemens. Examples of this kind of collaboration include Frustum, NoMagic, Cortona 3D, Riffyn, thinkstep and sternico.

Pavel Konecny – studied cybernetics and biomedical science, 12 years of working experience in a leading IT consulting company (35+ projects, 25+ clients, 3 continents).
Neuron soundware uses artificial intelligence methods to gain understanding of audio signals. The unique pre-processing of the input data via complex physical sensor model allows neural network to learn and identify the important features quickly with high confidence. In addition, we have developed and patented the method of reconstruction of the original data.

The KONUX Solution: Current manual measurement is replaced by sensors mounted on the tracks that continuously transmit infrastructure health data to the KONUX Andromeda software platform.
