Future of London • Urban policy network: independent, member-based, non-profit • 32 public-sector members – LAs, HAs, GLA, TfL, social enterprise – and variety of private-sector partners • Capacity-building and connection for practitioners at all levels in regeneration, housing, infrastructure, economic development • Focus on delivery – the how as much as the why…

Crossrail as Catalyst • Research project from December 2013 to April 2014

• Originated from FoL’s membership • Sponsored by Arup, Crossrail, GVA and LCA

• Project steering group also includes GLA, LB Redbridge, Peabody, TfL, UCL and Urban Design London

Research • Review of UK and overseas rail-and-regeneration projects • Two research seminars • Interviews with 25+ key stakeholders • Contributions on planning (Arup) and property impact (GVA)

• Final report and ongoing discussion Review findings:

• UK Metro-land movement • Jubilee Extension focus on capacity • HS1/LCR long view. Crossrail goes farthest yet

• UK still behind overseas transport/regen efforts Photo Pete Edgeler

Seminars Common themes: cross-cutting need to • align all levels of policy • connect all levels of delivery authority

• ‘growth-proof’ stations and surroundings • increase public awareness beyond central London • coordinate private-sector investment • mitigate construction impact

Station experience

Six very different stations Southall, Tottenham Ct Road, Whitechapel, Ilford, Woolwich, Abbey Wood • • • •

Varying station areas, from superheated commercial to former industrial Varying concerns, from community response to town centre impact Varying relationships, whether cross-boundary or cross-sector Varying tools and resources, from Crossrail support to in-house teams

Broadly shared recognition that there’s still time/opportunity to benefit
