Maximising Crossrail: The experience so far Lisa Taylor Director, Future of London
Jennifer Johnson Programme and Research Lead, Future of London
Future of London is: • Membership-driven, not-for-profit urban policy network • Capacity building for the people who deliver London’s built environment • Focused on delivery – the how of delivering development and regeneration as much as the why
• Connecting practitioners at all levels across regeneration, housing, transport, energy and economic development • Independent, responsive and able to draw on top-tier support • Actively engaged senior Board and Steering Group
Our research project • Research project from December 2013 to April 2014 • Why we’re undertaking this project: - Originated from our membership - Took time to assemble project and partners • Sponsored by Arup, Crossrail, GVA and London Communications Agency
Project goals • Examine opportunities seized and missed, from Jubilee through Crossrail 2 • Identify key ingredients in successful schemes • Share cross-sector examples and strategies for delivering resilient communities centred on these revitalised hubs
What we’re doing • Guided by a senior steering group • Review of existing literature • Interviews with LAs and key stakeholders • Research seminars: today and Feb 25th
• Contributions on planning (Arup) and property impact (GVA) • A final report: April release • Follow-up site visits
What we’re doing Historical context… • What can we learn from completed lines? … A focus on Crossrail 1 stations … • Using case study stations/communities to illustrate different strategies, opportunities, challenges
… And looking forward • What lessons can inform future schemes?
Purpose of today To gather practitioner input to help shape interviews
Guidelines • Chatham House rules • Attendee input is non-attributable • Opportunities for follow-up #CrossrailRegen

Maximising Crossrail: The Experience so far Perception & role of Crossrail in Supporting Development
Research Seminar
Crossrail is supporting London’s growth • Crossrail helping to create conditions for growth – Unlocking transport capacity – Creating new connections
• Significant potential – 57,000 homes – 3.25mn sqm office

However, experience isn’t uniform • Supporting the ‘world city’ function – Significant scale – Primary focus on commercial activity
• Outer London growth – Modest levels of activity – Residential focus – Linked to identified capacity Major centres Brownfield land
• Advancing ‘new’ components of the city Short presentation title here / November 2010

Where can Crossrail take us? • Not all opportunities realised – Strengthening existing markets – Longer term potential to change perceptions
• Creating Change – Supporting a new offer – Unlocking the next stages of growth – Underpinning town centres – Advancing brownfield delivery
• Diversification of activities – Core central locations – Raising quality and choice Short presentation title here / November 2010

What else contributes to success? • Alignment of policy • Integration of stations • Complementary investment in public realm
• Coordination and assembly of sites • Existing market activity

Roundtable discussions Three themes: • Connection: Urban realm and surface transport Facilitated by Brian Garcia, UCL • Integration: Regeneration and engaging existing communities Facilitated by Martina Juvara, Urban Silence • Development: Delivering major new schemes Facilitated by Chris Paddock, Regeneris
Roundtable discussions Drawing from your own experience in relation to your topic, consider: • What’s been your actual experience? What would be your desired outcome? How do the two compare so far?
• What approach or process is being employed? • Who are the key partners in delivering this outcome?
• What barriers exist? How might they be overcome?
Next steps • Today, stay with us until 17.30 to continue the discussion informally • Within one week, we’ll post a blog capturing the ‘spirit’ of the discussion, and invite others’ views on the roundtable questions • Interviews commence shortly • Feb 25th, we’ll hold our second research seminar
