2011 FUtUReS AND OptIONS

Futures and Options empowers New York City’s underserved youth to explore careers and guides them to further their education and become productive citizens.

Ashley Brown, freshman at Brooklyn College and Futures and Options intern at Kirkland & Ellis LLP from fall 2010 to spring 2011. On the cover: Steve Severin, Senior Consultant, Deloitte & Touche LLP. Futures and Options intern at the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York in 2004.

We are all inventors, each sailing out on a voyage of discovery, guided each by a private chart, of which there is no duplicate. The world is all gates, all opportunities.

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Dear Friends, Teaming with more than 115 New York City businesses, from multinationals to nonprofits, Futures and Options introduces teens to the working world. Our engaged, active partners connect teens to a wide range of work experiences–hiring our youth as interns, hosting career-exploration field trips, and sharing insights at careerdevelopment workshops. Why do businesses choose Futures and Options? First, they recognize a unique opportunity to change the lives of young people. Our partners continue the journey with us because we carefully prepare, train, and match our students to each internship opportunity. The inspiring result: Young people learn the skills they will need on the job and understand the responsibilities of the world of work. It’s our privilege to open gates for these motivated, determined teens–and to give them opportunities to achieve their goals. And it’s a joy to watch as they absorb the lessons of the work world, realize their aspirations, and evolve into young adults eager to grow into productive citizens. We’re grateful to all who support our work: Our board of directors and staff, our corporate, foundation and individual donors, our business, school and community partners, and our volunteers. You make opportunity happen for young people who did not know it was possible. Yet there is so much more we need to do. Each year more than 60 percent of the youth who apply to Futures and Options are turned away. We encourage you to join us as we keep opening gates for those who need–and deserve–the chance. Most sincerely,

Stephen E. Hessler Patricia S. Machir Chairman, Board of Directors Executive Director

INSpIRING IMpACt Futures and Options alums have significantly stronger high school and college graduation rates. They gain a greater understanding about the responsibilities of work through our programs. And they’re able to find jobs quickly – with an upward income trajectory to boot.

Mario Lopez, Customer Service Supervisor, RR Donnelley and supervisor of Futures and Options intern Adrian Morris during summer 2011.

We didn’t say it; Inspire, Inc. did, in a rewarding evaluation of Futures and Options this year. Inspire consults to local nonprofit organizations focused on youth development. As part of the study, Inspire surveyed Futures and Options’ alumni and business partners to assess the impact of our programs. Our business partners sounded an equally gratifying note in the evaluation. One of them singled out our dedication to “helping cultivate students with high potential who otherwise would not have access or exposure to such a program through their education channel.” Inspiring, indeed. 4

CAReeR eSSeNtIALS For youth who have not yet reached the skill level or age for internships, Futures and Options has created Career Essentials, a pre-internship career-readiness program. Career Essentials gives students basic preparation for the work world by practicing and improving their interpersonal, communication and office skills. The program also includes career exploration activities and field trips, including invaluable visits to companies such as PwC, ColgatePalmolive Company and the Millenium Hilton Hotel.

“I’ve learned how to dress for an interview, how to create a resume, and even how to answer a phone professionally. I also learned what kind of leader I am.”

Genesis Torres, junior at Notre Dame School. Participant in the high school Career Essentials Program in fall 2010, and assistant to the program in spring 2011.

“After the Career Essentials Program, Genesis gained confidence and self-assurance. Her natural enthusiasm and energy shines brightly. I know she will do well in life.” -Stefanie Jones, Program Coordinator for the Career Essentials Program.

BRIDGe tO WORK Young volunteers have higher self-esteem, perform better in school, build leadership skills, and learn how to solve community problems. With that in mind, Futures and Options created Bridge to Work, which links teens to community-service opportunities around New York City and career exploration in the nonprofit sector. Improved teamwork, communication, and leadership skills are the key results.

“Futures and Options helped me in school by getting me back on track with schoolwork and giving me support.”

Jose Zepeda, senior at George Westinghouse High School. Participant in Career Essentials in fall 2009 and Bridge to Work in summer 2010.

“What I enjoyed the most about Bridge to Work was seeing how well the students worked as a cohesive team and how each student challenged themselves to experience new things.” -Kamel Lyons, Youth Service Program Manager, New York Cares.
