AN URBAN CREATIVE POLE IN BAYRAKLI 6

DESCRIPTION The project is located at a unique multilayered site in Bayraklı, Izmir where there are no distinctive boundaries. The site is occupied in an old industrial area that will soon be the new center of the city due to its characteristic urban realms such as the developing CBD, the Aegean Sea, Bornova Stream and the historical site “Smyrna”. Keeping in mind the distinctive identity of the site, this project focuses on connecting all these valuable charecteristics to further enhance and guide to create a new creative urban pole. Creative industires have always had a major impact in guiding the social and cultural industiries; amoung them the influence of digital media in todays world cannot be ignored. Digital media has a strong effect on the society and gives publicity to creative sectors that is beyond the boundaries of the site. Along with the developing CBD an hand in hand establishment of a media center will supplement the vision of Izmir to become a future design city. Futhermore the foundation of this landmark will create an all inclusive atmosphere for people to meet, socialize anf exchange information between different social groups by flexible uses.To further assist these ideas the form chosen reciprocates with its surroundings while influencing both the physical and social environment. Hence, the project utilizes the given site values where boundaries are blurred but, along with the potential of digital media in the society and a structure that functions both as a catlysyst for creative interaction as well as an incubator for the physical and social diversity it creates a harmonious innovative urban hub.

DESCRIPTION The term “Heterotopia” basically means the other tissue. It was initially mentioned by Michel Foucault, who is a French historian and philosopher. To interpret this concept in line with this project, the inherently born tissue within societies/cities which mirror their identities and anomalies, continuously feed off from the surroundings and grow in a constant state; forming new tissues within itself, lets the users be main actors. Since the project site is in Bayraklı, Izmir, heterogeneous patterns of highrise, industry and residential units are physically forced to be together and coexist without any kind of relation with each other. The project seeks solutions to the problems of heterogeneously existing patterns, socioeconomic disparity, spatial segregation and strict borders by creating a new tissue in which all these parameters can coexist, interact and feed off each other. This new tissue brings the tissues of defined characters surrounding the site together and forms an alienated tissue to the outside while reflecting the outside at the same time. In that sense, these tissues are extended into the site letting them grow from their center, gradually meeting and spreading into each other to form a layered structure so that they are constantly feed off each other. Where all tissues meet, is the place of collision in which the verticality is born. It is the threshold of the site which hosts all of the functions and characters in the surroundings are shaped by the contributions of urban actors. Furthermore, to attract the urban actors in an alienated tissue the urban network, called “armatures” is shaped. In Grahame Shane’s interpretation of heterotopias, armatures are basically the paths and connections between different tissues, but in this project they would not only be a walking path, but also a space for socialization, circulating both horizontally and vertically by forming open/closed public spaces as they meet the ground and the structures that are formed.

CONCEPTUAL PLAN
This coneptual respresents the different urban tÄąssues that incorporate the various characteristcs, functions and density in the site area. The textured patterns showcase the heterogenity towards the core of the site, centrally dissolving into a more homogeneous one. The intersecting cracks display the embracing of the surrounding people where the included circles are the important landmarks.

DESCRIPTION The historical Usküdar Tekel Stages which were built as tobacco storage are located on the seashore within the Fethipaşa Grove. This project occupies a site surrounded by trees at the lowest point of the sloped grove and it is blocked by the historical Tekel stages from the seaside. The aim is to create a complex of a variety of venues for theatre and cinema working along with the historical Tekel Stages. Moreover, to create a completely accessible public space where people can gather is the compelling part of this project because of the concealed space between the topography, trees and historical buildings. To achieve absolute accessibility the design idea starts with connecting all entrance points of the site by pursuing the traces of topography and trees. The project act as a missing part of a puzzle in which it embeds itself into its surroundings by allowing occupiable rooftops. Other than the traditional closed stage, the project offers outdoor venues which users can be active.

Accommodation for New Higher Education Campus in Universities District 46

DESCRIPTION
The main idea and purpose of this project is enhancing student social life and creating a sense of community. The fact that the site is surrounded by roads, residential and institutional buildings results in insufficient spaces for students to socialize. Hence, due to the poor environmental conditions for campus life, the accommodation units are located by shaping the open spaces inbetween them and these open social spaces are connected with a common bridge. This bridge is one of the key elements of this project as it separates the entrance of the accommodation units and envelops social spaces at ground level while connecting them and enabling for a transition from horizontal to vertical movement by the use of vertical tower elements. These towers carry the social life from horizontal to vertical where recreation rooms are collected into vertical towers to foster social vibrancy into units.
