I started practical training in 2000, and that was a year before my graduation the first project I joined was “Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh” from construction to handover the designer of this project was H.L.Lime and the architect was William Perry, and I was fortunate to gain hotel experience from the beginning…

I DIDN’T JUST DREAM ABOUT SUCCESS…

I WORKED FOR IT.

By. Aya Abd Elbary

I already had a bit of this experience at my father's work in this field. My father was a deputy regional manager for Oberoi Egypt, and I remember well how much he loved his job and I have always seen him as the best manager… From him, I inherited the gift of love and dedication at work in general, as well as how to take care of my employees. The passion I have for design, was always my desire and choice, since childhood. After graduating in 2001, I worked as an interior designer with IDS which was owned by the French designer Christian Le Pretre, and he was one of the most famous designers in Egypt at that time.

HC Mall

That helped me gain practical experience, by working on many projects inside and outside Egypt, with different civilizations, tastes, and cultures, such as Intercontinental Hotel Mumbai, Hilton Garden Inn Doha, Radisson Plaza, Udaipur India, Steigenberger, Hurghada, Egypt, etc... And through this, I fed my experience with different types of high-end projects, whether residential, commercial or hospitality, etc.. In 2007 I resigned from my position in IDS and got to know my current partner, Mr. Bahaa Sabry working as general manager of Verinno Design Office. After our success together we decided to become partners in CDA Studio starting 2012 until now…

A U R A INTERIOR, ARCHITECTURE, URBANISM.

“ Design shouldn’t live in isolation as an autonomous

entity removed from its environment and its users, it is defined by the reason of its existence within a specific context and its relevance to its surrounding and user experience. Careful attention should be given to the integration of a project into its context in order to establish a dialect with a series of relationships between the design and its environment as well as users to create a rhythm that forms its identity. This approach when applied to any discipline from urban planning to architecture and interior could be considered as a form of visual storytelling that communicates a design vision into a physical narrative through aesthetic and functional elements.

EXPANSION STEPS.. “We want to contribute to our country reputation, we want to say that a made in Egypt product can compete with European quality with a very affordable price” How did you originally get into lighting?

THE WORLD HAS SEEN A LOT OF DARKNESS.. NOW LET’S SHOW IT OUR LIGHT

By: Aya Abd Elbary

ENG.GEORGE MICHEAL “ I believe we would not achieve same results if we were not the same family however it is a double edged weapon, if things went bad it would be chaotic”

First Steps...

“My passion was going to the area of designing products and its molds... it was tough but I love it” Tell us more about you… and when did you start thinking about working in this field?

It’s all started as i raised in a family business environment, not a normal business it is an industrial one where you see tons of science based activities going around, it was not easy to choose which academic path should I go for as lighting industry has it all, electrical, mechanical, materials, chemical and architectural Post gradual I studied management and recently doing architectural lighting design masters.

Well, it started from the market itself, there was a huge demand for lighting units, particularly desk lamps, we introduced such nice designs that the market have never seen before, it went viral and inquiries did not stop, and that gave us motivation to introduce more and more of lighting applications such as downlight, spots, wall mount, florescent and recently LED technology

What was the most important and difficult project ( 3Brothers ) has undertaken ?

ENG.GEORGE MICHEAL Managing Director

3Brothers celebrates the 30th anniversary of its founding 30 years of work in designing, manufacturing and providing smart solutions in the lighting world. 3Brothers has a history of working on mega projects inside and outside Egypt, like Germany, Syria,, Iraq, Sudan, UAE, Yemen, Qatar, Jordan, Bahrain and South Africa, ect….

Too many, I remember in the past the Smart Village, at that time the government was looking for products with very high specifications; only European manufacturers can comply for, but we did it and the prime minster himself chose our products, that was 20 years ago and our products still working perfectly there Recently we have the same situation, very high specs asked by consultants along with certifications and we did it too, The New Capital, El-Alamein and many more.

Do you think you will achieve the same success if you work with partners other than your family? such a good question :) well, family is always bonded, that makes it easier for the business to grow fast

What is the secret of your success together? Our secret is love, respect, being responsible and education, and by the way we do not mind working with other partners and we might do this soon.

A FOUR-POINT ANSWER ROUND.. The main reasons for your success? •Passion •Dedication, •Development •Scientific based knowledge What other trends are you seeing in lighting design?

Upcoming Steps.. “This year we are exhibiting in LIGHT AND BUILDING Frankfurt the most well known lighting exhibition in the world” Tell us more about EGE?

EGE is a sister company to 3Brothers, the scope of its work is renewable energy, we build stations and lighting poles with solar energy, it is a fast growing business and we do very good in its market.

And what about (Lighting Academy)?

We now do educate lots of students in collaboration with UTW and APE. We did courses to more than a thousand of students.

And what will the academy offer… Our vision to the academy is to have an accredited lighting institute in Egypt, we lack lighting knowledge in our country and we hope we can do something about that.

What's new for ( 3Brothers ) in 2020? This year we will open our latest project (the innovation center) the place we do design our products and molds, this will allow us to introduce more products to the market in a very innovative way, the place is up to the latest standards as a workspace and equipped with the most sophisticated tools in lighting industry.

•Human Centric Lighting •light pollution •Dynamic lighting •lighting control and IOT

How did ( 3Brothers ) start, where did the idea come from, and how did it expand into becoming this successful entity?

Where is the most beautiful light you have seen anywhere in the world?

The idea started 1988 and went to the market by 1990, it is a story of 3 brothers who had various experiences and backgrounds, at that time the manufacturers were very few in the market and the government was encouraging investors to start businesses especially industrial ones, that pushed us to develop and grow in the local and domestic markets.

•Natural light/ Egypt is the best •Northern light / Norway and Finland •Artificial light/ Italy and Germany •And loved the Neumusem in Berlin “the way they lighted up Nefertiti Bust is amazing”

What developments did you make during the 20 years? We have made many developments over the past 20 years We started with a small factory with a production capacity of 20 windows per shift, then we developed it to produce 30 and then 40, then in 2008 we opened our largest factory and its production capacity was 50 windows per shift, and this month we opened a new factory and its production capacity 150 windows per shift.

What does “T Track” offer? We specialize in u PVC doors and windows, and “We are the market leader now” we work with all categories, we work to ensure that the window is assembled from the best accessories, materials and glass, so we are in the forefront because we provide all the needs of customers, from soundproof windows and Heat, air, water, dirt, safety system, aesthetic shape, long life, warranty and after-sales service from follow-up and maintenance.

“WE ARE CELEBRATING OUR 20TH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR” What are the most important projects that you have done or that you have renovations ?

WINDOWS are designed to make you DISCOVER THE BEAUTY OF THE WORLD FROM YOUR PLACE.. And DOORS to make you SAFE WHILE YOU DISCOVER IT. By. Aya Abd Elbary

First the idea..Second implementation..Third development..then..In the lead. Where did the idea of “T Track” come from? We were following up before the doors and windows market and we saw that there are good materials suitable for the Egyptian market but they were not present at that time in Egypt so we sought to enter them, we decided to establish the first factory for “T Track” in 2000.

We have many, many over the past 20 years, but our latest projects are Jolie Ville Golf & Resort Sharm El Sheikh, , Barceló Cairo Pyramids Hotel, Marriott Hotel, Costa del Sol Hotel, The Cairo International Stadium, Egyptian Military Academy, AUC, Katameya Heights, Lake View, Mirage، Arabila، Palm Hills, Mivida, ECT…

What makes a high class client not to import any window or door anymore? Simply because we are exporting, our products are in Europe and America, our products are the highest specifications in the world with accredited test certificates and we use the highest accessories in the world, so importing for it will be a big loss and not a win at all.

MR.HANY AL-AWADI

“WE HAVE THE LARGEST PRODUCTION CAPACITY IN THE MIDDLE EAST”

What is new T Track in 2020 ? We have a plan to open The aluminum factory for destinations and another factory for wooden doors and windows, and there is a new collection of models of doors and windows. 49

Furniture, with a different look Furniture plays an important role in the lives of peoples, furniture is no longer just a merchandise that is bought and sold, and it only performs its functional role. Furniture is one of the most important elements that occupy spaces, in all different activities, and it is an active component in defining the identity of these spaces, so it is important to think carefully about the dimensions that cast shadows on furniture pieces inside and outside the architecture

Design rules

Design is to made imagination visible There are four important considerations, the designer must to take into account when starting the design process, and the most important of these considerations are creativity How can the designer nurture his imagination and clear his mind to create.

Dr. Khaled Mehrez

THE REAL MEANING OF.. TRANSFORMING IMAGINATION INTO REALITY DESIGN OF FURNITURE BETWEEN ART AND UTILITY Dr/ Khaled Mehrez: “The designer is like a poet who is responsible for catching ideas that fly to capture them and then formulate them through visual methods”

By: Aya Abd El Bary Furniture is important to interior designers in the same way that books matter to librarians. It is important because the interior design is concerned with managing the spaces, and at the same time satisfying many tastes and their agreement on the quality of the piece and the furniture and its uniqueness despite their different tastes. In this article, will look at the different aspects of "Design". Dr/ Khaled Mehrez One of the most important interior designers in Egypt.

This is the first goal that the designer aims to use, how to use this creativity to make it fit the way that the designer meant, and then put it as one of the artistic topics that underpins his philosophy and his own touch that But in my opinion, the real conscious designer who has you can differentiate among hundreds of designs. many experiences that he can employ and control, The second consideration that must be taken into consideration is the and the creative designer must be able to going to the social aspect of the work that targets a specific segment of society, subconscious at certain moments and then returning to therefore it must reflect the appropriate design and compatibility with the consciousness artistic taste and cultural dimension of this segment, as well as its purchasThe personality of the designer is formed through many ing power and that is an important role in determining the product media, the most important of which is origin and birth, economics which is the basis on which he lives throughout his life, The third consideration is that which is concerned with the economic then the schools that affected him, and the teacher aspect of the product and its final cost, and this is reflected in the materi- who affected him, and not necessarily here, the als used and technologies, and this is the fourth and last consideration teacher who taught the lessons only directly, may be where the technical and technological aspects and the materials used the teacher who didn’t we meet in our lives. But they play a very important role in the design of the product, sometimes the were the true teacher of ours, as was the culture, which technical side it is the main topic upon which the design idea depends, i mean by general culture in various fields, which gives and at other times the material is the main champion of the product and the designer very complex tools in shaping his identity. it shows its identity. Experience also comes as one of the necessary dimensions, the more experience, the more the designer will Therefore, the designer has a responsibility to understand all these four be able to achieve his goals effortlessly and the factors considerations in order to create balance between them in order to of success will be within reach. obtain a final product that achieves all the desired goals The design is governed by many laws and considerations despite the creative aspects that govern the structure of the model and ultimately tells us about the entirety of the work that is often associated with technical rules, and this responsibility lies in the balance Usually, the designer’s personality reflects a special vision of his work that between the designer who has decisions since the prints his own touch in his creative ideas. beginning of the product design.

Personality of the designer

“Finally, the conscious designer must always catch up with the needs of society and the aesthetics of the times and to anticipate those around him with steps as the locomotive that paves the way and advance the wool to illuminate the world around it”

Tell us about the most important achievements and projects of the Daghash Group? Daghash Group was present in every anchor event in the Egyptian society for the past four decades. We are even known to be the school of this industry in Egypt and the surrounding countries. Among the valuable accomplishments of Daghash Group, is to give work opportunities for around 600 families through the various activities, in addition to expanding our know how in the market through companies working in the same ďŹ eld.

By: Aya Abd El Bary

Daghash Group is one of the oldest companies specialized in manufacturing tents and canopies of all kinds, it started its activity in 1981, and has now become one of the leading companies in the Egyptian and Arab market, and for 35 years the company has implemented the most important projects for both the public and private sectors within a lineup of more than 100 different product and service. Daghash Group has been able to expand through the scope of its business to cover the market needs in the following areas: Tensile textile structures, Temporary and lightweight structures, Tents and settings, Car parking, Shades and folding shades, Event unit shades, Automatic shades..

ENG. MOHAMED DAGHASH CHAIRMAN

We inaugurated all the mega projects, starting from the 6th of October Bridge, to the New Suez Canal project, passing by the millennium event in the Pyramids plateau. Who addresses Daghash with her designs, market, or customers? Our target is always to ďŹ nd the optimum and most suitable solutions for our Clients in all sectors, Residential, commercial, hospitality, sports What advice can you give to anyone who wants to become a businessman, or to young people ahead of working life? “Don’t hurry and be patientâ€? “Pursuit your target and never let it goâ€? “Your reward is coming from God not from your paycheckâ€? In light of the technological development we are experiencing, how do you develop from yourself and your company?

ENG. MOHAMED DAGHASH & ALI DAGHASH FOUNDER

We train our staff, we send our managers abroad to be updated with new technologies. We are focused on adding automation to our products. Increasing the Research and Development activities. Developing partnerships with foreign technologies Every success story has a hidden secret behind it. Who or what is behind your success? I see that the secret or the key is available for everyone, but few people notice it and use it, working hard and honestly with passion with true belief of the reward All my gratitude goes to my Father the Master and the Teacher, he was a great man and a legend

ABOUT THE EXPECTATIONS, GOALS AND NEW DAGHASH GROUP IN 2020 In 2020, I see Egypt moving towards an updated and contemporary society, which should be reected on the architectural and constructional features. Daghash Group is preparing itself to introduce to the market suitable solutions for this new era. We are working on the ďŹ rst fabric covered stadium in the New capital, and studying numerous architectural landmarks with newly introduced materials

And they have solutions to cover open spaces, whatever their size.. Also the company has a long history in the ďŹ eld of constructing exhibitions, conferences and big parties tents. The beginning of the Daghash Group, how did the father start this entity, and how did the eng Mohamed Daghash develop and multiply this success.. The story began in 1981 when my Father established “Daghash Tendaâ€?. In 1995 we created the structural department working with larger covered structures (tents). In 1998 we developed “Eventaâ€? for renting tents for events. In 2001 we introduced in the Egyptian market the aluminum structure tents, and 2002 we started producing the tensioned fabric structures We are upgrading and developing our capacities and capabilities as we grow. We try to support the local feeding industries in order to increase the local components in our products

Mega Projects

SUCCESS IS A RESULT NOT A GOAL

Working in major projects, like Schools and Universities, Hospitals, Admin Buildings, Museums, Hotels, and Malls “Between responsibility and habituation” I think we are used to the responsibility and challenges, and this has become an essential part of our work. Sphinx Glass is one of the very few companies that implemented large height towers projects taking into consideration the effect of weather factors on the glass body, for Example “El Masa Hotel” in the administrative capital and the dimensions of the panels that were used were not produced in Egypt before this project as well as the high level of safety required by the quality of the glass that we used in most of the administrative capital projects, especially in The Ministerial District. Now we have the sufficient experience to manufacture glass that is suitable for the construction of all the tower projects to be built, whether in the City Of El Alamein or the “Icon Tower” project in the administrative capital.

THE MEANING OF A SUCCESSFUL CEO By: Aya Abd El Bary

Raya Offices Arma Building

What is the meaning of a successful CEO? It’s the most powerful and sought-after title in business, more exciting, rewarding, and influential than any other. What the CEO manages is the biggest moves of the company which accounts for 45 per cent of the success of a business. Despite the luster of the role, serving as a CEO can be all-consuming, lonely, and stressful. We will get to know one of the strongest CEO of one of the largest glass companies in Egypt

Eng. Mohamed Khattab: CEO of Sphinx Glass Company.

Egyptian Grand Museum

The Beginning “Until 2010, Egypt was a net importer, but when the industry developed, the market became a net exporter” Since 2008 before the start of the Sphinx Glass Company production line, The products of the market in Egypt at that time were products of low-quality clear float glass and there were some merchants who monopolized the import of the rest of the types of glass. Then we decided to make a production line with international specifications and high quality to raise the level of the market at that time and meet the needs of the Egyptian market and other Arab markets, then we followed this decision with a set of decisions, which is not to use contractors even if they were less expensive, instead we chose PPG, a global giant in the glass industry, for the technology and know-how. Because we didn’t think in a traditional way, Sphinx Glass has acquired a license from PPG, an American Fortune 500 Company which allowed us to build a production line at the forefront of technology as well as to ensure a superior and continuous training to our workers and engineers. PPG license helped us maintain a strict quality standard to better position ourselves within the local and the export markets. Production started in 2010, and the local market started to picking up followed by export markets, and this was a boom not only for Sphinx Glass, but for the entire Egyptian market.

Galleria 40

The Expansion “This industry requires high investments, highly efficient marketing and sales team, technological capabilities and trained human resources” We produce 50m tons of glass per year. Only three African countries, which are Algeria, South Africa, and Egypt, produce glass and we are among the biggest producers. He pointed out that the neighboring markets ask for the Egyptian glass, especially the Arab and African markets, as well as the countries associated with Egypt in trade agreements such as the COMESA countries, as a result of the high quality of the Egyptian glass product. The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) represents a free trade area with 19 member states, stretching from Libya to Swaziland. And Added: The volume of consumption of glass in Egypt is constantly increasing as a result of the increased demand for glass used in construction, facades, and a number of projects.

DREAMS A long-term vision and dreams for Sphinx Glass It is not only a dream, but we are really qualified enough to develop the glass industry, considering that the sector has been remarkably improving since 2010 and the production has nearly doubled in the last five years. Adding that Egypt enjoys high-quality sand and sufficient energy supply.

2 UNITED STATES

A fairly simple building, this house has two distinctive features, the 35-foot cantilever of the 2nd oor and the atypical site plan with dual courtyards substituted for the traditional suburban backyard. Both of these features are a direct result of 3 fairly prosaic goals: the client’s desire for privacy, an efďŹ cient use of the pie-shaped lot, and a façade that isn’t dominated by a garage door. Layered over these requests is the architect’s inclination to create a highly controlled and beautiful entry experience. The building itself consists of 2 (roughly) rectangular volumes that are connected by a glazed hallway.

89

2019

The public spaces are all contained in the single-oor eastern volume, while the 2-story western volume houses the private portions of the program.

The large cantilever places program to the extents of the buildable area while still allowing proper vehicular circulation for a side facing garage door.

To enter the house one goes through the gate that is under the large expanse of the cantilever and then passes through the ďŹ rst courtyard that is just behind the front concrete wall.

91

2019

The actual entry door is in the hallway that connects the volumes and divides the courtyards.

This hallway exists in a somewhat ambiguous state between interior and exterior space as its materiality and ceiling plane is continuous with that of the covered exterior spaces that are adjacent to both courtyards.

Once inside, one passes between the two courtyards before entering the large volume of the living space.

The visual structure as a natural extension is combined into a single form of interaction of opposites with the futuristic base of architecture, which does not conict with it.

At the same time the functional zones are simultaneously distinguished and make up a single whole, blurring the boundaries between the external space and the interior. The composition of architecture is developing freely.

T

he metabolism of organic architecture. As a result of the inexpressive environment, the fundamental concept base was the integration of the building into an artiďŹ cially created landscape and the inextricable connection of architecture with the open courtyard site structure. This is a dialogue with the natural order context. The project was created taking into account the living moving space for human life as a creation and a component of this nature. It is a union of biological images, engineering and architecture.

95

2019

The idea of functional expediency, based on the harmonious "adaptation" of the project to the conditions of its existence and purpose, prevails.

The architectural composition of the building develops from the outside to the inside. It is interconnected with the environment, being an organic architecture with a philosophy of metabolism.

Temporary and permanent components are clearly traced: the framework and the changing essence of the surrounding world organism, the biology of architecture, the unity of architectural and natural design.

The idea was implemented taking into account the limitations of visual contact from the external development of the village and the construction of a private zone with a formed terrace, landscape and adjacent body of water due to the enclosed volume of the building in the plan.

Futuristic architecture as a natural extension of nature. The base interior solutions are the principle of the “home gallery” integration into the living space. The building frame is the backdrop for decor and art, sculptures, decorative elements with hidden Japanese themes, symbolic forms. Each piece of furniture is interpreted as an art work.

The panoramic molded windows do not prevent the focus from the site on the "history" that occurs in the house and do not destroy a single architectural field, which includes the exterior-interior and landscape solutions. Art objects are also zone elements of residential and non-residential spaces, and are the tracers of the movement direction.

Everything is balanced as in a living organism: the external space of the object is interwoven with the interior of the living room, bedroom and other rooms. The continuity of the mutual landscape flow into the building and the building into the landscape is enhanced by the green roof, on which a garden with woody and herbaceous plants and an artificial relief is organized.

An additional connection with the outer space is organized due to roof lamps oriented to the movement of the sun and adding free air and a subtle play of black and white nuances to the interiors.

The premise of the project was to integrate an avant-garde housing adapted to the environment within the forest.

A house open to the outside for the summer months with large outdoor living areas and pool; and at the same time sheltered for the winter months.

The RiM House is located a few meters from the sea on the north coast of the island of Mallorca. The plot is located in a wooded area with pines, holm oaks and wild olive trees.

Rmarquitectura studio (www.rmarquitectura.com) together with the interior design studio Rimirim (www.rimirim.com) were in charge of carrying out this peculiar project. The work was executed by the Islabau Constructora (www.islabau.com) The team formed by Vero Montijano, Jaume Colom and Biel Rechach, proposed the distribution of the house in a single plant integrated into the orography of the land.

The concept was to adapt the building to the environment, keeping the traditional architecture with a nod to the avant-garde and ďŹ nished with materials from the area.

Crossed facade openings are proposed to facilitate air circulation in the house with a system of vertical slats.

This volume will house the area of facilities, swimming pool, and outdoor kitchen. The interior design team furnished the home with the premise of adapting to the environment; using wood for furniture and lighting and linen in textiles.

The distribution of the house is characterized by the aligned arrangement of the volumes.

The ďŹ rst volume is a cube completely covered with marĂŠs stone (calcarenite) that makes independent the access area of the outdoor terrace.

In order to acquire speciďŹ c natural scenery and light environment, each living function faces its own desired orientation.

JAPAN

The speciďŹ c requests at the beginning were not so many. Their needs came to clear little by little, as various plans were proposed.

Since the couple preferred simple and open plan and also they must keep watching their three children are constantly moving, the house was designed as one big space, placing the double-height living room at the center so that they can see where and who does what.

THE HOUSE IS FOR A COUPLE AND THEIR THREE LITTLE CHILDREN, LOCATED IN A QUIET RESIDENTIAL AREA IN NORTHERN KYOTO CITY. THE SITE ENVIRONMENT IS WHERE NEIGHBOR HOUSES ARE STANDING AT THE EDGE OF THE EAST, WEST, SOUTH BOUNDARY, AND HOUSES ARE LINED ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE NORTH NARROW ROAD.

113

2019

Therefore, it was considered that taking a courtyard was effective in terms of daylighting as well.

After placing car parking at the front and laying out required inner rooms, enough space for a garden was hardly left at the back side of the site, and there are neighbor's walls blocking closely even if the windows are opened on the outer walls.

115

2019

Finishing’s were chosen in the balance between the modern structure of the house and traditional Japanese style from the husband's preference The bathroom was placed in the middle of the house facing the living room so that the husband who likes taking bath above all could enjoy it with his children like an open-air bath, looking at the trees.

Although a curtain-rail was set in the bathroom just in case, even after a few months of living there, it seems the family got used to the exposed bathroom as they are still using it without a curtain. It is like the character of the residents and the house got very close now after a lot of discussions spending time, designing back and forth.

However, a courtyard enclosed with glazed walls in a limited width of the site makes the left space tight, thus, the indoor tree idea that is as if a courtyard drew into the room inside came up in mind.

It is expected that the tree which will grow close to three children will strengthen the relationship between the family and the house as if the tree is another member of the family.

SINGAPORE

The client requested an exciting dynamic house that made the most of the spectacular steeply sloping site which overlooked the world heritage site of the botanic gardens. The clients brief was very much an organic process, in the making, with rooms being added as the design developed. This made it hard to maintain a coherent design, so constant rationalization of the spaces and the overall massing was a continual process.

Feng Shui also played a major role in determining elements of the design, such as the round lift and angling of the front door. The site sits on the busy Cluny Road facing the entrance to the botanic gardens.

From the road, the site sloped up steeply to a platform level many meters above road level. Vehicular access to the site was therefore difďŹ cult and was a major determinant on the design.

119

2019

Even adopting this strategy meant the driveway had to be sinuous and steep.

To minimize the discrepancy between the 1/F platform level and the road level it was decided to enter at basement level and to create a light airy

basement entry a courtyard was sunk down with a landscaped pond and waterfall to introduce the connection with nature.

121

2019

Because of the prominent raised nature of the site and the prominent placing of the building overlooking the road we decided to make the building appear light and to ‘float’ with large cantilevers of thin elements to reduce the apparent mass of the building seen from the road.

For the lower floors RC construction was adopted, but for the upper floors and combination of RC and steel was used to achieve the large cantilevers.

The attic floor was entirely steel structure with an aluminum roof that also supports a large array of photovoltaic cells. 123

BRAZIL

When in the summer of 2014, founding members of Atelier Branco, Matteo Arnone and Pep Pons were approached to design a leisurely retreat in the small town of Vinhedo, the brief posited that the house be able to accommodate at least two kind of needs: the need for a place to read, immersed within the site’s vibrant vegetation; the need for a place to think, reposed under the placidness of the area’s boundless subtropical skies.

The client, a left block activist against Brazil’s military dictatorship in his youth and now renowned scholar of the history of political thought, had conceived of the house as a temporary haven between São Paulo and Campinas, at which the State University he held teaching posts since the beginning of the nineteen eighties.

It was thus neither to be a permanent place of residence nor a holiday home as conventionally understood, but a place of reverie and contemplation, occasionally of work, away from the bustle of Brazil’s hectic metropolitan life.

The latest of five built works designed by the young Italo-Hispanic duo, Casa Biblioteca embodies the practice’s attentive research into architectural form, matured both during their formative years in Switzerland, where they had been students of the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio, and in their professional upbringings under practitioners of the caliber of Christian Kerez, Kengo Kuma and the two Aires Mateus brothers.

It is a bold scheme, almost entirely realised in in-situ cast concrete, of which the constructional acumen and attentiveness to detail are somewhat characteristic of all Atelier Branco’s architectural pursuits.

Setting up practice in Sao Paulo in 2012, the two have, in fact, built up an enticing and significantly varied portfolio of which the content ranges from the careful crafting of furniture products and fittings, to the design of commercial showrooms and office spaces,

to the construction of numerous residential projects scattered throughout Brazil in which their talent has, perhaps, best expressed itself in these few years.

127

2019

Belonging to this later series, Casa Biblioteca is without doubt the most idiosyncratic of the bunch, both for the eccentricity of its client and the context it was born out of. It is, in fact, set atop of a steep north-facing terrain within a clearing of Vinhedo’s dense ‘mata atlantica’—the atlantic forest which extends over the larger part of Brazil’s littoral region.

Due to the site’s topographical attributes, its design follows a distinctly ‘sectional’ rationale such that the spatial and functional disposition of the project is almost entirely articulated in the relation between two contour lines.

In order of relevance, the first of these two lines consists in the line of the ground, of which the sloping profile has been manipulated to form a series of spacious horizontal terraces, fit for inhabitation; the second consists in the line of the roof, which ever so slightly hovers over the terrain’s uppermost retention wall to create a sharp, horizontal datum between the domesticated topography and the sky above it.

VIETNAM

This is a private house project for the three-generation family located in an emerging residential area, 15-minutes drive from the center of Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam. The newly built houses around the site form a highly dense neighborhood and they share the outer wall with each other. The site of project is in such a narrow site of 7 meter wide x 20 meter long. Among such typical highly dense residential development areas in Asia, we decide to propose a strategy of housing that suitable for the tropical climate in which greenery and the residents live intertwined.

One continous garden SpeciďŹ cally, as the volume of the building is climbed from the ground oor, it is gradually set back while twisting. On the top oor, the house is conďŹ gured to protrude a two meter cantilever to the main road. The stepped gardens of the house are placed interminably with the terrace as they are connected and continuous to the top oor. Depending on the type of trees, they create an umbrage that ďŹ lters the harsh sunlight and cool down the air for the house. In addition, each tree pots also functions as a blindfold from the main road.

On the other hand, the terraces are arranged on each oors with variety of size according to function. At some place, it is designed as a private garden that the residents can access directly from their bedroom. While in other space, the terrace becomes the public garden which everyone can gather. All of these gardens are individual spaces that are also "one continuous garden" where the residents and kids can go through by the steel staircase outside.

The client’s ďŹ rst request is “a large green gardenâ€? where children can play and adults can have BBQ with their family and friends. In addition, the residents also expect a big swimming pool, spaces for exercise, a grandmother’s bedroom, a living room & a dining with kitchen, a sufďŹ cient parking lot - all on the ground oor. Hence, we have proposed to divide the idea of the “large green gardenâ€? into smaller connected gardens.

143

2019

In the interior space, the ground floor and the first floor are connected by a huge central void. It attaches all of the main functional spaces such as the living room, the dining with kitchen, the library and the kids’ bedroom to become one space in which the residents can interact with each other.

At the same time, through the big openings with different scales and proportions inside the house, the residents can also connect with the greenery outside the house. Thus, we hope that the house will be a bridge that connect people and people as well as people and nature.

Environmental strategy The gaps that are created by the shifted volumes allows the natural sunlight and cool wind to pass through. In such an elongated site where it is often narrow, hence we have created such open spaces for the house. As the direct sunlight is reduced by the greenery on the facade of the house, the residents’ future electricity usage of air condition will also be decreased.

145

2019

Because of non-abundant budget, we are required to reduce the ďŹ nishing cost for the house as low as possible. Therefore, we apply bricks as ďŹ nishes, a method commonly used in the construction sites in Vietnam while at the same time reducing the construction expenses in general.

In addition, as the labor cost was small, we were able to control the quality of arranging the brick on construction site. Since brick is also a local material, the carbon footprint from transportation was greatly decreased.

Connect people and people, people to nature This project is one of the latest projects of the series project "House for trees" which we have been continuing during these past few years. Among them, we aimed for not only to plant trees in houses, but also to create a new type of house for trees which the life of residents and nature are more closely intertwined.

The Seater

SWISS PEARL

The Seater is among the latest furniture pieces offered by Swiss pearl, for garden and outdoor areas. The seat, created by the Slovenian architect and designer Tina Rugelj, persuades with its simple silhouette. The Seater forms a part of the Concrete Garden outdoor furniture collection. The collection reveals another side of concrete aesthetics, transforming cold material into elegant shapes; and thin objects into strong structures. Made of natural ďŹ ber cement, it is strong enough to endure any weather conditions.

The form of the Seater takes advantage of the unique qualities of ďŹ ber cement: the thinness, minimum roundness, and strength of the material. The Seater is produced with either a left or right armrest. The two variants can be combined to create a two-seater chair. Seater is made out of 16-mm-thin ďŹ ber cement and celebrates the look and feel of raw concrete. Tiny imperfections are visible on the surface and the material gains a noble patina as it ages.

Production Cut to length, hammered, smoothed and spread, the raw material is crafted manually and shaped with great sensitivity until highly expressive and durable masterpieces emerge. Each of which constitutes a one-off in its own idiosyncratic right and bears the personal signature of the designer.

Material Light and unbreakable, water-impermeable, long-lasting, frost and ďŹ re-resistant, not to mention entirely recyclable. In a nutshell, ďŹ ber cement from Swiss pearl. Natural, regional raw materials guarantee short transport distances and the material’s qualitative characteristics not only include a strongly pronounced innovative spirit, but also resource protection and pollutant minimization.

The Seater represents the spirit of the Concrete Garden collection. The Design Society of Slovenia honored the Concrete Garden collection as the Best Furniture design of the year 2013. It was published in several international media, such as the Financial Times, and CNN Style selected it as one of the top ten design products of 2015.

Cloth Table The Cloth Table combines state of art technologies and functionality to create an exclusive object suitable for any space. The cloth table is a collaboration between the design firm Hybreed and Swiss pearl. Its design represents an innovative approach to furniture design introducing digital manufacturing techniques in combination with conventional crafts. The furniture is made of natural fiber concrete, the form combined with the technique of fabrication give at the same time a sense of lightness and rigidity. The design comes from research on material, performance simulation and robotic fabrication. The main purpose was to achieve a design shaped by gravity and natural forces using physics engines. Those simulations, combined with prototyping and materials research, led to sculptural design. The process of fabrication and especially the experimental approach was one of the key features of the project, enhancing the innate value of the material. The computational approach follows and highlights the qualities of the material regarding aesthetics and structural properties allowing the creation of a unique table. The complex double-curved shape for the molds has been 3dprinted in sand to have the maximum precision achievable. The project has been engineered by hybreed and 3D printed by Voxeljet in Germany.

Materials have been the starting point of the research since the early phases. Concrete Canvas has been used for testing material properties akin to concrete but easier to shape in an unconventional way. The further developments of the project led to fiber reinforced concrete as a more affordable and resistant material with better mechanical performances and finishing qualities. The fabrication process was part of the design and has been taken into account since the early design stages. The final design was the result of several tests and prototypes and long research on the material performances.
