“ There’s a common ideology that design

improves lives, while the statement might be correct its truth is highly relative to the relevance of that design to the user and the experience it offers. Depending on the project type and design nature. The reality will fall on different ends of the life improvement spectrum. Accordingly, it is always a huge responsibility for designers to impose their ideologies on people for their effect on their lives. Each design suggests a certain culture. As they guide their users to behave and act in a certain, when repeated this narrative will become the new norm and change their standards with time.

The Power Of Talent Young Age With Big Capabilities

W h e n C r e at i v i t y M e e t s Innovation It’s Like the Rays of the Sun.. When They Overlap They Illuminate CREATIVITY IS THE POWER TO CONNECT THE SEEMINGLY UNCONNECTED

“Don’t try to become a man of success, rather become a man of value... try to become you.”

Arc. Hussein Nassar The best buildings and the best interiors are those where there is no obvious disparity between the many elements that make up the whole. These elements include everything from the structural aspects of a building, site planning, and landscaping, to furniture, architectural graphics, and the interior details. Indeed, there are many examples of distinguished buildings and interiors that were created and coordinated by one guiding hand, and when one thinks of them, one must include the architectural brilliance of Hussein Nassar Designs.

He is one of the greatest interior design inspirations of his time. His projects are a showcase of luxury architectural design and exquisite interiors. He has no less than 50 restaurants and more than 300 houses under his belt. The best thing about Nassar’s interiors is the blend of practicality and luxury, resulting in an eclectic style that accentuates any space and brings it to life.

AYA ABD ELBARY

Mixing classic and modern, Hussein Nassar receives his inspirations from his clients’ backgrounds and stories. After which he personalises his designs by integrating antiques, vintage furnishings, and family heirlooms with his own signature design style. He is from Egypt and studied architecture at Ain Shams University, many of his works have a sense of traditional Egyptian charm that is brought to life with contemporary elements, interesting prints, and bold colours.

Nassar learned the importance of colour and detail at an early age from his parents, who are also engineers. He grew up watching project sites and seeing engineering designs from drawing to implementation. He frequently visited showrooms and antique stores, which translated into his cozy, but sophisticated signature style.

The Power Of Difference

Adding Creativity to your Triumph Design is not a purely personal expression it is influenced by dominant traditional media and language. It is said that design is the art we are living in. It is a representation of values, issues, development, culture, and the way of life of every epoch. Since we are the generation witnessing the tech revolution first-hand, it’s only natural to see technology's influence exuded in design styles everywhere and that’s exactly what I have done. I aim to mix the old with the new while adding my own personal style giving life to a whole new visual concept.

There are so many places you’d want to explore in whatever city you are in. I want my clients to be eager to touch, sit, feel, see, and enjoy everything around them, just as though they would in their city and place of choice” Hussein Nassar

Hussein Nassar is a sought-after Egyptian designer and has been working under his own name since 2003. He is the CEO of Hussein Nassar Designs.

FIRST DESIGN PROJECT- CHALLENGES AND APPROACH “Since it was my first time designing a space for a client, I truly had no idea what I was doing!” I said to myself, “This will be an opportunity for me to learn hands-on and it will help me develop a methodology for project management for future projects.” “The idea of conquering the unknown made this both an exciting and encouraging project that could help me establish credibility and build a name for myself. That’s what I believed in... and exactly what I did.” He succeeded in transforming Andrea's Zamalek branch into Sequoia, which hands-down became Cairo's favourite nile-side restaurant for over a decade.

Amagansett Modular House

AMAGANSETT, UNITED STATES Architects: MB Architecture Area: 1800 ft² Year: 2019 Photographs: Matthew Carbone

More critically, our clients had a limited budget— significantly below prevailing construction costs. They were open to exploring materials, methods of construction, and design strategies that would yield both affordable and exciting solutions. Our clients, a couple with 3 children, had purchased a triangular, wooded, corner lot on high ground in Amagansett, NY and contacted us to explore means of building a house for their summer and year-round-weekend use. The site is constricted due to its shape, but, due to its elevation, affords beautiful sunset views and light. Programmatically, we were asked to provide 4 bedrooms, 3 shareable bathrooms, kitchen and living spaces; plus, outdoor eating and recreation areas and a pool; and enough lawn area to play games.

75 2021

Based on prior experience, we knew that conventional ‘stickbuild’ construction using local labor would be prohibitively expensive. We suggested prefabricating the building off-site; and the use of shipping containers to lower cost, ease transportation, and provide the kind of design experimentation that they were open to. Our past work proved that by streamlining this process, we could achieve significant cost reductions.

But shipping containers are inherently narrow (7’-2” wide, finished inside). So, we opted to stack two 40’ long x 8’ wide containers on top of two and carve out the interior floor/wall/ ceiling of half of this ‘4-pack’ unit to create a voluminous, 17’ tall, living space that would create an exciting and necessary spatial relief. To reach the second floor from this room, we chose to install a wide staircase, taking the whole width of a single container; in this manner, we extend the high living room ceiling and transform the stair itself into a kind of ‘amphitheatrical’ room that faces the backyard, pool, and sunsets— through floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall, windows.

The simplicity of spatial layout and materials were sought to yield compelling and uncluttered rooms while achieving budget goals. As such, we used the rectilinear geometry of containers, and their inherent structural strengths to guide room layout and structural requirements. In fact, the small 10’ x 10’ 2nd-floor extension is essentially bolted and welded back to the main building and held in tension— it is devoid of beams underneath. The single container housing two bedrooms are placed slightly away from the main building to create courtyard-like outdoor spaces that allow the building to nestle into the sloping landscape while making the small house feel spacious.

A single tall oak tree was carefully retained during construction and maintains a pivotal point anchoring the two parts of the building together. The transparent bridge connecting these two building parts is surrounded by tall grasses and shrubs creating a pleasant walkthrough experience both as one travels through the bridge and as one approaches the front door of the house. Our building was installed in two days; fully completed in two months, and cost significantly and meaningfully less than prevailing building costs.

HOUSE IN

AMAGASAKI

uemachi laboratory

Japan

The owner was also attached to his old house, and there was a request to keep as many trees in the garden as possible. Although the house will be demolished, the trees in the garden can be brought closer to their lives, leaving the memory of the appearance of the former building.

This house is for couples. The site is in the suburbs of Osaka City. There was a 70-year-old house on the site, but this time I was asked to demolish this house and rebuild a new wooden structure. Usually, only the couple live in this house, but there are many opportunities to get together with relatives. Whether it is used by only two people or when a large number of people gather, we have designed with just the right size and gentle separation of public and private.

79 2021

In the place where the former building had its entrance, we created an outdoor lobby that connects the newly rebuilt house and the existing threestory house in a semi-outdoor environment. It serves as a common entrance that gently connects the two households. The three-story house has been renovated and the son’s family lives there.

Regarding the view of the garden, instead of looking over the entire garden, we make windows so that you can see it as a natural landscape cut out from each place. From the front of the outdoor lobby, you can see the green reflected in the water from your feet so that you can see through the lattice, and in the entrance hall, you can see the green that spreads horizontally from the ground window. The owner wanted the house to be unobtrusive and as comfortable as the landscape in the garden. We worked with the Araki Landscape Architectural Office to explore the relationship between garden and architecture.

BIN & BON

HOUSE

QUI NHON, VIETNAM Architects: H.a Area: 170 m² Year: 2019 Photographs: Quang Dam

The House was built for 4 members:a married couple and their sons named Bin & Bon. The wife loves cooking and pay attention to her small children while doing housework. That’s the reason the design team sketched out the idea of the house’s cross-section as a terraced plot, every floor is receded. Our orientation is to build a simple structure, without walls, just sliding glass doors and curtains to create a light, free space and bring the most pleasant flow of air. The kitchen is the main space where members could look at all the other spaces in the house.

83 2021

The house is located at the crossroads in small alley. There is a front yard with porch where the neighbors’children gather to play with Bin & Bon. The front of the house often receives hot-dry wind, so each floor has a garden as a wind break for reducing wind as well as light of vehicles from the main road to the alley.Back of the building, there is a hill bank where is higher 3 meters. Some houses are located there so design team set a tall wall to cover the back view of the house &avoid eastern sunlight. A 2-meter-wideyard become a main green space for the kitchen.

The construction is located in local area, so it should be designed in a way that easy to build as much as possible for the local workers. The materials are basic, easy to find, reasonable prices for the owner’s budget, minimize arising. The house is conscientiousness as well as a special gift of the design team to host and adorable Bin & Bon.

85 2021

C J House RUANGRONA

BOJONGLOA KIDUL, INDONESIA Architects: RUANGRONA Area: 230 m2 Year: 2020

Limited land area, making this residence designed in a compact way so that it can meet all the needs that exist. Our clients are modern young couples in big cities with lots of work and activities, so they need a place to stay that is not too much maintenance but also comfortable. With a compact design, to keep giving a beautiful-green impression and eliminate the narrow impression, opposite the entrance there is a deep garden with voids to all rooms which become an attractive element in this house, so that all rooms in this house can enjoy that inner garden. Located in a residential complex that is quite densely populated, CJ-HOUSE by RUANGRONA, is designed with a different, unique, and catchy modern facade than residential buildings in general in Indonesia. Massively closed from the front, the opening is located on the side of the building. Had appeared a sense of worry about the light in the house, but the number of openings to the side and skylights became a solution in bringing some lights to the house that appears blocked from the front. In response to the situation around the building which is directly adjacent to the residential area, the dwelling is designed with an inward orientation.

87 2021

To add to the impression of area, the stair area is designed with glass openings to the outside of the building so that light can directly enter the house. This house is very suitable for young couples or small modern families with busy daily activities, an area that is not too broad but it is enough for daily life.

89 2021

Escobar Luciano Kruk

E

scobar House is located in Haras Santa María de Escobar, a gated community on the North corridor, 54 km away from the center of Buenos Aires city. • The ample neighborhood’s lots are organized around a golf court. The one on which Escobar House lies is characterized by its plain topography and its privileged back view towards this court and a vast green area oriented to the North.

House

The brief included an en suite master bedroom and two secondary bedrooms for the children to come, who would also make use of a playroom as far from the social area as possible. They requested that the living –dining room open into a semi covered expansion directly attached to a swimming pool. The house should open up to the vegetation around and should have areas especially designated for its contemplation.

The client—a young couple—asked for a weekend house that, in the short term would become their permanent home. Intended as the most prominent space in the house, the social area would have a clearance higher than that of the rest of the rooms and it would rise above the natural terrain’s level in order to achieve grander views over the exterior surroundings.

91 2021

We proposed a house made of exposed concrete and glass, which don’t need much maintenance. We intended to produce architectural synthesis regarding floorplan organization and unicity when it came to total morphology. It was decided that the main platform, containing the entrance and the social area, would be the starting point of our project, disposing the rest of the rooms at half height. This articulation made it possible to connect the rooms organically while at the same time providing them with their independence.

A circulatory and services corridor on the front of the house gives privacy from the street to the nobler rooms, which are oriented in the opposite direction, towards the lot’s back. Being almost blind towards the outside, this corridor opens through longitudinal cracks. Most of the house’s front is shut, whereas the rear connects fluidly with the outside through a completely transparent shell.

The supporting structure is organized around two parallel inverted beams running along the whole house. So as to visually emphasize the volume’s horizontality, these beams were set back from the closing shell, both at the front and the back. Lying according to the space’s interior organization, these structural stripes help arrange the service corridor at the front, the social areas and the semi covered deck at the back. Moreover, we aimed at framing the views into rectangles of apparent horizontality to project them towards the vegetation outside and the golf court at the back. With the same intention, lines of trees were laid out on the lot’s limits that would also give privacy to the house from the neighboring residences

We managed to come up with a compact volume with a sober shell inside of which the different heights, natural light effects, and envelopes of each room would produce very diverse spatial conditions. We aimed at designing a cozy house through means of simple lines and artifice free spaces that would establish a close dialog with their natural surroundings.

The swimming pool was set as the client requested: incorporated into the terrace of the house. It was configured as a rectangular plate with 3 cantilever sides hiding its depth to expose a floating mirror, both in the exterior view of the house and in from the inside. Standing from the top of the terrace, the water mirror reflects creating a living sky portrait.

BF House is located on a peculiar

piece of land, being completely flat in a mountainous sector of the city. This situation taken in consideration, the owners wanted a one story house taking advantage of the garden in a most efficient way. It was decided to build a basement garage in order to save garden area. The house has an “L” shape in order to frame the garden, which is bordered by a considerable mountainous space in the back.

The main concept of the design is to have functional and visual transparency. The spaces in the social areas work in an open setup and are interconnected clearly and at other points subtly. The bedrooms are located linearly in the long stetch of the “L”, closing at the end with the main bedroom.

The only space located on a second floor is a family room which is not used constantly, so it was chosen to be left out of the daily dinamic. It was conceived that the vertical surfaces (walls) in the social areas were transparent, or, if for privacy they needed to be opaque, the upper and lower edges were in glass to keep the continuity betweeen the indoor and outdoor garden areas, and also between the indoor and outdoor spaces.

Recently married young couple having a busy life style; engaged in IT field longed for a Modern House where can unwind and enjoy tranquility while maintaining liveliness. Achieving the client’s demand and responding to the site and context; the design was conceptualized to a thoughtful puzzle of internal rooms and outdoor gardens that together create the illusion of endless spaces on what is, in reality, in a 14 perch urban plot. The site is situated at Alakeshwara Road, a dense urban residential area in Ethul Kotte, Sri Jayawardenapura. The house has been planned to two stories, with a total floor area of 4025 square feet and the ground floor consists with two vehicles parking, living area, visitor room, dining, pantry and service area.

he clients of The Sanctuary, recent empty-nesters planning ahead to retirement, hoped to downsize and simplify in the design of their new Palo Alto home. When the clients purchased the property, an old wooden fence across the front yard and the original house closed off the site from the street. Behind this rough and aged presentation, however, was an urban refuge of lush vegetation throughout the deep lot. This sense of discovery served as the original inspiration for the design of the house and directed both architect and client to its culmination.

103 2021

The structure floats on stilts of piers, allowing the building to participate in dialogue with the trees on-site while protecting the root areas. The floor plate projects beyond the building envelope and dissolves into balconies to blur the sense of indoor/outdoor while at the same time lifting the building up from the ground. Even the driveway is constructed out of floating concrete structural slabs supported on piers to minimize the impact on the heritage oak tree. By expanding the living area to spill into the outdoor spaces, our teams provided ample room for the clients to entertain their ever-expanding family.

The proximity of the downtown Palo Alto area by foot and bike was fundamental to the clients’ decision to purchase this lot, and their belief in the building to a higher density in an urban setting leads to the inclusion of a second-story apartment. The couple fell in love with the overgrown garden and its obvious potential, approaching Ground Studio to help them enhance the landscape; retaining scenes of serenity and surprise while creating more of a cohesive and modern feel. Through their collaboration with the landscape team, the clients connected with Feldman Architecture, bringing with them a desire to design a long-lasting modern house that fit comfortably into the surrounding neighborhood while featuring its unique and charming landscape. The house is sited quietly behind the large heritage oak tree with its canopy stretching across the generously sized front yard. After passing under its branches, guests are lead through a series of courtyards and view gardens that weave through the undulating footprint of the building. Each interior space is paired with its own landscape moment, allowing the architecture and landscape to flow into each other.

Three pavilions span the depth of the lot. The thoughtfully placed secondstory apartment is designed for rentals. Below, board-formed concrete walls serve as organizing elements in the main residence which separate private from public areas. Diffused natural streams into space throughout the day, working gently with the clean material palette of concrete and Alaskan yellow cedar. The Sanctuary was constructed as a modern house that allows the landscape to speak first. The design features its many hidden courtyards, inviting guests to experience the same sense of wonder that first drew the clients to this urban oasis.

Absence

The presence of concrete plane that hovers across the landscape diagonally following the north-south orientation creates two open spaces with unfathomable dimensions at a glance. Absence - Sky court provides the cool down temperature for the southern breeze through the evaporation of the reflecting pond. The captured ever changing sky on the water also reveals the truth of impermanence.

Sculpture Court, an origamiinspired sculptural hill, not only accommodates garage and shrine beneath but also embodies SUNKEN perception. The hill itself also accelerates velocity for upward wind at the northern end and provides privacy at the upper level with the green hedge. Arrival Court, the court next to, is left empty with a tree providing silent greets to the visitors

Awareness

At ground level, transparency of glazed wall and window enclose most of the interior living space to maintain living space of the absence. At the upper level, BLIND MASS, the single solid and void mass simply act as a mute being and nonbeing abstract living space by day and glow its absence by night. The leveled-up volume that floats against the gravity over the landscape raises the awareness of release.

nspired by the old traditional houses of Hanoi, with spaces full of natural light and ventilation, thanks to inner courtyards. The design aims to bring a breath of traditional spirit to modern life, and at the same time creating spaces full of natural light and ensure natural ventilation within the house.

The functionality of the house is separated into 2 zones: the commercial area of two floors and the family area. The common spaces of the family area such as the living room, library, dining room, and kitchen are positioned in different levels with varying ceiling heights in order to compose open continous space to maintain family communication with each other more easily.

111 2021

The facade of the house is designed as a double layer with its outer layer made from perforated cement blocks and a steel frame glass inner layer. The double-layer facade combined with a green layer provides cover from the sun, the dust and allowing natural ventilation throughout the entire length of the house.

T

his design makes the space properly open and providing unexpected spacious feeling, despite the limited width of the house. Also, the two children’s bedrooms are situated above the main common area, next to the void spaces, allowing connection with family members downstairs.

The quiet area is located at the innermost of the house, which includes the grandparents’ bedroom and the parents’ master bedroom. Significant elements of the interior spaces are three void gaps separating the house volume to deliver natural light into lower leveled spaces of the house.

The facade is also designed with a large window, providing even more light to fill the house when needed and give the facade a more attractive look. The intention was to design spatial harmony with consideration of family traditions, the local climate and contemporary lifestyle.

5 Houses

BOM RETIRO, BRAZIL Architects: Nommo Arquitetos Area: 8191 ft² Photographs: Eduardo Macarios

Five houses occupy a corner lot in a residential neighborhood in Curitiba. Outside, the feeling is one of unity, since geometrically there are no divisions between the houses, and in terms of materiality the whole building was treated in the same way: white at the top and stone at the bottom. Only the gates mark the entrances.

115 2021

The initial challenge was to deploy the five houses – which was a demand from the client and builder – on a perfectly square plot. The solution came through different units that converge in a space that concentrates three of the five yards.

There was a search for individuality by bringing specific characteristics to each unit. The houses have different plants and solar orientations, but all units generate products with a wide relationship between the social area and the patio, laundry room with isolated service patio, and spacious and well-ventilated rooms.

In all houses, light was sought to its maximum potential, making use of cutouts in the plans, zenith lighting and wide windows that go from floor to ceiling. The use of white also reinforces this premise

Above all, we sought an architecture that allows residents to experience the neighborhood atmosphere, maintaining a close relationship with the neighborhood and a uniform aesthetic, which ties together a commonly fragmented urban landscape.

On The Water

Since the whole structure is an interconnected space with different elevations, there is no homogeneous environment—various areas present various thermal environments such as the fireplace warmth and the dryness of the air. Guests wander around in this atmosphere, discovering and enjoying spots they find comfortable.

ituated alongside a lake, this guesthouse was designed as a continuous spiral space flowing from the approach to the bedrooms. Each step taken deeper inside the building reveals a changing lakefront view. The various lakeside environments, including the sound of ripples, light reflecting from the water surface, the humidity and thermal radiation, are also carried on into the spiral, but in a non-uniform distribution due to changes in physical distance from the water surface.

The architect also designed and led the construction of a recreation area, previously non-existent, which received a lounge with gourmet kitchen, spa, wine cellar, spacious bathrooms and an infinity pool.

T

he project aimed for the revitalization of a Brutalist residence, built in the federal capital in the 70s, originally designed by architect João Filgueiras (also known as Lelé). With 1,968m² of built up area on a 12,000 m² lot area, the intention was to keep the original exposed concrete and its volume, creating current technological solutions. To this end, the style and trait were maintained, but everything else was reconsidered.

but everything else was reconsidered. A challenge, due to the structure of the house. With only four supporting pillars, the plan has two floors and a large concrete structure with rod-bound roof slabs, which makes the house move up to two centimeters a day, depending on the ambient temperature. This movement was the starting point for the entire intervention project, as the materials had to be prepared for any expansion, without forming cracks or fissures.

S

culptural rotating panels with brisesoleil functions were designed and executed to compose the space. The landscaping was 100% designed by Lutero Leme, who contemplated a 380 meter walking trail, permeated by grass, flower beds, fruit plants, pergola and gazebo.

Another highlight of the project is sustainability. The entire projection of the roof was used to install solar panels (photovoltaics, for heating water for domestic use, swimming pool and spa). Two underground tanks (40,000 liters total) were also built to store rainwater and all gray water after being treated for garden irrigation, and a 6 m³ composting system. To further reduce the environmental impact, four charging modules for electric vehicles were installed.

Riverside House

Our response was to design a simple, uncluttered composition of stacked forms interlinked and cut open to expose the interior spaces to the adjacent river and park views beyond. The ground floor contains kitchen, dining, living areas, garaging and a guest suite. The upper floor contains bedrooms and media room.

Large sliding glass doors open fully to dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior spaces, further reinforced with seamless floor tiling and wall finishes employed continuously between interior and exterior spaces. Terraces flow off the main living areas and lead to a separate garden pavilion containing a swimming pool, spa and change room.

The living areas within the house are restrained and minimal. The entire ground floor is open and inter-connected yet does not feel stark or sterile. The kitchen is carefully detailed with a functional cooking area concealed in a separate annex, allowing the occupants to enjoy the primary space without clutter.

envelope constrained by river setbacks and a footprint afforded by an original house that occupied the land. Embracing the riverside setting while retaining privacy was a primary concern of the client and project brief. 127 2021

T

he materiality is sophisticated and elegant – burnished concrete render, stone flooring and dark timbers delivering a rich and tactile experience. Subtle separation of forms allows the upper level to float freely over the lower. An elegant detail that gives a lightness to the powerful western elevation.

The design responds to privacy by incorporating a textured mix of screening devices – from dark vertical louvers along the southern and northern facades to softer interior draping intended to shroud and conceal the interior environment without losing the occupant’s relationship to the river and park beyond. Filtered light and shadow created by the first-floor louvers result in a collection of calm and ordered spaces that respond to the tempo of the day and season.

The key design elements that form the sustainability approach to this project are a well-insulated envelope, located and formed to follow best practice passive solar design principles. Riverside house’s orientation was largely dictated by the site geometry however the location of openings along with carefully considered overhangs combine to create a dwelling that reduces overheating in summer while taking full advantage of the lower sun angles in winter.

The entire ground floor is tiled concrete which is activated when the winter sun penetrates the depths of the house, allowing for passive solar gain. The slab is also heated with water pipes that are utilised via an air-to-water heat pump. Vertical louvres enveloping the upper level are positioned to filter sunlight and reduce the overheating of bedroom spaces.

Riverside house meets all the needs of this vibrant family, and while the house ticks the boxes for the fundamentals of sustainable living, it also has a warmth of materiality, connection to context, and a relationship to the landscape that evokes a positive response from its occupants that will be enjoyed for many years to come.

This is a building that celebrates its location and compliments the existing site context and surrounding landscape, yet still provides a comfortable retreat away from a very busy urban environment. Collaborators on this project were Lume Design for interiors, and Outerspace Landscapes

Villa Mandra

S

itting on the ridge of the hill of Aleomandra in Mykonosyet almost entirely hidden from view, Villa Mandra looks straight out to sea and the sunset over the neighbouring island of Delos. A 6-bedroom holiday house built for a young, dynamic couple to enjoy with their family and friends, it celebrates its spectacular view from a grounded viewpoint blended into a sensitively landscaped, stone-walled garden that screens it from the road behind.

The house is built upon the idea of slow, laid-back summer living, and encourages mindful connection with family, friends and the freedom to exist peacefully in nature. Form follows emotion rather than function, as every space becomes another opportunity for rest, reflection, and exploration.

To create a house that would allow guests to enjoy being outside throughout the day we needed to filter the overwhelming intensity of the climate by providing shade and protection from the elements.

And although the house needed to accommodate a large number of guests we didn’t want to dominate the landscape with oversized volumes. Inspired by the humble complexity of the traditional island vernacular we reduced the architecture to 2 small traditionally whitewashed volumes and a third of stone dug from the site, built around a large ‘courtyard’ living area which is covered by an expansive but lightweight chestnut pergola.

131 2021

This courtyard becomes the focal point of the house, seamlessly connected to the living room and kitchen volumes, and looking over the pool and gardens beyond. Beneath the pool garden is the private bedrooms, separated for privacy and quietly enjoying the uninterrupted view over the lower garden to the sea. Their separation further reduces the overall impact of the house and cleanly divides social and private space.

H

and-built stone walls are sharply confident; traditionally rendered, round-edged volumes are perfectly flat and smooth. The customary chestnut pergola has been engineered to increase its structural integrity, to form a glue-lam beam lattice that sits lightly on the white volumes, shading and protecting the extensive courtyard beneath.

The simple white volumes, straight stone walls, and light pergola planes sit comfortably in the Cycladic landscape, and the efficiency of their layout, centered around the courtyard living space, streamlines daily life. Villa Mandra is informed by humble Cycladic tradition, enriched by natural materiality and inspired by contemporary summer living.

Key to the character of the house is the palette of traditional materials such as lime-wash, stone, and wood that have been applied and engineered with contemporary techniques to create un-nostalgic architecture that bridges heritage and locality with contemporary life.

Expandable House Urban Rural Systems

Scaling up the expandable house’ - We first reported on the expandable house project in 2018 when we had completed construction of the first floor (36m2). The house has now expanded to its limit of three floors (108m2). Here we report on the conclusion of phase two of the project, in which all of the technical systems required to hoist the roof with manual labor and simple tools, collect rainwater, solar energy and manage domestic waste have been successfully trialed.

The expandable house (rumah tambah in Bahasa Indonesia, or rubah for short) offers affordable and sustainable dwelling options to the rapidly growing populations of Asia’s largest cities. Combining lessons from existing informal settlements, incremental housing precedents and principles of sustainable tropical building, the expandable house is designed to adapt to the fluctuating patterns of resource consumption and expenditure, or metabolism, of its residents.

135 2021

The expandable house is designed around the following five principles:

1.

Sandwich Section. The house provides a roof that can be hoisted, and floor and foundations (the bread) that can support up to three additional floors (the filling). This system allows flexible financing whereby the developer or state housing agency provides the roof and foundations, while the residents provide infill as their circumstances require and budget allows. It also helps accommodate crucial income generating functions (shop, café, garage, cottage industry) along with dwelling

2.

Domestic Density. The house encourages domestic densification in the vertical dimension. This supports the benefits of co-location of dwellings and employment. It also helps to reduce the settlement footprint on arable land, and the demand for expensive infrastructures (roads, electrical and potable water networks).

4. Productive Landscapes. The expandable house integrates food and building material production capacity locally. This is achieved by integrating bamboo plantations and kitchen gardens into the planning logic of the house, and helps further diversify the resource base of the expandable house.

5. Seed Package. The expandable house is designed as a seed package, containing technologies, material strategies and planning guidelines that can develop in different ways depending on local social, cultural and environmental conditions. We intend that diverse tropical towns will grow from the common seed package.

3. Decentralized Systems. Rainwater harvesting and solar electricity generating technologies, sewage and septic tank systems, and passive cooling principles are integrated locally with the expandable house, avoiding expensive and often unreliable centralized, or ‘big pipe’, approaches to infrastructure provision. 137 2021

Extension of

House

CACHTICE, SLOVAKIA Architects: Architekti B.K.P. Area: 54 m2 Photographs: Tom Manina

The original brick master´s house was a typical portico country style with a pitched roof. Portico’s house was actually a wise scheme – as vernacular houses used to be. Portico attached to the longitudinal main volume was a distinctive and practical feature on the interface of the exterior and interior of the house. Apart from the natural protection of this frequented zone, it regulates different effects of summer and winter sunshine energy on the mass of the masonry.

The extension is actually a prolongation of the silhouette of the existing house inclusive its portico. It subordinates to the existing cross-figure, but inside it is a radically different space concept. It is an open space scheme without the usual ceiling separating the living area from the attic. The new living room of a modest floor area is equipped with generous space experience.

The extension is part of a set of buildings on the site of a former village brickyard. It is added to the existing house of a former brick master – this house was restored in the mid-nineteens. The brick kiln, which was in a ruinous state, was rebuilt into a studio 10 years ago. After WWII, when the production of bricks was closed, an orchard was set up on the site.

139 2021

The roof truss could be interpreted as a scheme of typical rafter construction or as a structural scheme of two mutually supportive sloping slabs. All the bricks used in the roof truss are marked after their origin. More than 2/3 had been manufactured by this former brickyard, the rest originates from the vanished brick kilns of the nearby region.

The walls made of brick blocks are outside and inside plastered with classic lime plaster without top coating. Other materials of this extension are also left without further surface treatment – concrete of the floor and of empora, precast concrete blocks of the portico columns and of the chimney, steel beams and profiles, etc. In a certain sense, it is a finished-unfinished building.

Massive roof truss structure improves substantially the accumulation characteristics of this building. It does radically reduce the thermal fluctuation in the interior, which is a classical difficulty of the usually constructed roof trusses. Closable glazed portico serves as a buffer climate zone for most of the year. This extension is a particular homage to the culture of a craft of brickmaking.

The decorative mosaic-like appearance of this roof truss is derived from different shades and ragged surfaces, which are typical for handmade bricks production. Empora gallery is inserted in the dividing line of the existing house and its new extension – it serves as a connection to the existing attic.

In response to the client’s desire to retain a significant portion of the existing flat pad between adjacent slopes, the house follows the matchbox concept with stacked volumes creating a rotated series of rectangular masses abutting the hillside, each with its own take on indoor/outdoor space.

Designed by Santa Monica-based firm, Montalba Architects, the LR2 House overlooks Pasadena and its adjacent mountains from its hillside perch. This new 4,200-square-foot house is made up of several distinct living volumes and programs

The structure’s programmatic elements peel away from the primary group of building blocks and shift to follow the rough slope of the hillside terrain. The intended entry sequence flows with the landscape, guiding visitors along a reaching sidewalk that extends under the mass of the building. The compression of the resulting space offers a unique arrival experience incorporating the natural creek just beyond front door, which is nestled on the second floor.

Outdoor breezeways, porches, courtyards, covered walkways and an immense rooftop deck extend the reaches of the limited floor area to the natural chaparral and views beyond. The house includes guest suites, a home office, gym, and theatre screening room, as well as abundant outdoor spaces, all taking in views of the surrounding hills and valley.

A home that feels green is not a home where you can see the green from anywhere, but a home where the residents actively use the external space and grow together with the green. For example, taking a nap under a tree, touching a leaf, planting a new friend tree or flower, spending time directly feeling the wind and smell with the greenery is an urban society. I thought that I could create an original experience and a rich life that I was forgetting.

It is a plan in a residential area located at the foot of Mt. The site is a narrow site with a frontage of 5.6m and a depth of 23.7m. The client was a couple in their 30s and two children, and was asked to live in a place where they could feel green

147 2021

It functions as a device that accepts a variety of homes, such as changes in weather and climate, changes in usage according to time, use of outdoor events, and changes in the lifestyle of residents. In addition, by providing large openings and high-side lights, the plan is to take in plenty of natural light into the house and actively take in natural ventilation even though it is a long and narrow building. In addition, by placing a dry garden between the dining room and the living room, you can use it daily and live with greenery.

Therefore, we established gardens in two gaps created by placing buildings in the north and south. If you plan the courtyard style in this long and narrow site, a space like a narrow passage will be created, so we decided to create a roof that can withstand rain in the garden and use it as a room. This garden space was placed in the center of the house as a multi-functional space that can be used freely by residents as a dry garden.

This plan hopes that even in a limited area, the dry garden will allow the residents to spend a variety of time and create a space where each scene can be spun up in a dense and diverse manner.

Glazing on all sides of the building allows visual transparency and creates a sense of openness and continuity between the interior and the surrounding landscape. The exterior decks, protected at different times of the day by manually operated timber shades, offer a variety of microclimatic outdoor experiences generated by the sun and wind conditions that change as one moves around the unit. 151 2021

A simple, open plan allows natural lighting and facilitates cross ventilation. The transparent surfaces designed to receive maximum daylight into the interior spaces minimize the necessity for artificial lighting. The high-pitched gable roof houses the photovoltaic panels to produce electricity and solar panels to heat water.

As a basic principle, regardless of the building use or choice of site, the modular system elements are designed to be constructed in reusable and recyclable materials that are easily available and can be assembled by local builders on any specific site.

. Ground source heat pump and underfloor heating constitute an efficient system that makes use of minimal energy. The floor of the unit is raised above the ground, which allows air circulation below its surface. Building orientation, custom made double-pane glazing and piston-operated pine sunshades all protect the interior from direct sunlight

The modular system used to build MU50 was designed to allow a wide range of building uses, reduce environmental impact and maximize site flexibility.

This fundamental design choice ensures a reduced environmental impact for any specific building size or use. Simple spatial configurations that result from the repetition of the basic elements facilitate natural lighting and ventilation. Water collecting and energyproducing systems can be added to the basic units to make them completely off-grid.

The renovation project is located in a huton within a core old quarter of Beijing. It’s a small Siheyuan (a typology of traditional Chinese residence) with three courtyards, with a total length and width of 15 and 42 meters. It’s named as “Qishe” (“Qi” and “she” respectively refers to “seven” and “house” in Chinese language), because its address number in the hutong is 7 and it originally consisted of 7 pitched-roof buildings. The Siheyuan before renovation was old and dilapidated.

The basic wooden beams and some arched door openings featuring the style of the Republican era were relatively well preserved, while most of the roofs, walls, doors and windows were badly damaged or disappeared. In the three courtyards, there were many temporary architectural blocks inserted many years ago. After demolishing those blocks, the yards were filled with waste of construction materials and overgrown with weeds, presenting a bleak view.

The material scheme of the project well combines the old and new. ARCHSTUDIO preserved the textures of traditional architectural materials whilst adding some new materials in an appropriate manner, so as to retain the marks of time, and present the contrast and fusion between the new and old.

The original pine wood framework of the Siheyuan was maintained, with its damaged components replaced by the same material.

ARCHSTUDIO embedded a veranda — a basic element of traditional Chinese architectures, into the old Siheyuan to link up the seven separated pitchedroof houses. The veranda functions as a circulation route, reshapes the spatial pattern and layers, and provides a playful walking experience as well as fantastic views.

Rehabilitation A Single-Family Home in

Miraflores

The house is located in Miraflores, Muros, a small rural core of traditional character, formed by a set of stone houses and a large number of granaries that once housed, dried and treated the corn plantations. The house is located on a steep plot, originally was composed of two attached volumes, which respond to the traditional scheme of Galician housing where the main spaces were the stables and the kitchen: with the oven and the stone cooler, but with the passage of time a third volume is added and a series of modifications are made that distort its character. The three volumes adapt to the slope, are protected from the winds and almost close to the imposing views of the Muros estuary, giving rise to a compartmentalized interior, of small and dark spaces.

The proposal is based on the understanding of the place: the scale of the rural nucleus, the pre-existing housing, the materiality of the stone, the 180º views of the estuary or the sunlight are the parameters that have been taken into account when considering the acting. The project idea seeks to highlight its identity: dignifying the preexisting and creating a fluid interior space bathed in light and directed to the views.

The decisions that pursue the realization of the idea go through to maintain the original stone volumes in their form, replace the third added volume, due to its scarce interest, for a new volume of concrete, in order to complete the built set. The stone facades keep their original spaces, while in the new volume there are large windows that open onto the views of the estuary, with oriented positions that reflect the use inside and dialogue with the existing. The intervention is committed to a sincere use of materials, limiting the maintenance of the stone, the introduction of exposed concrete and Zinc, which unifies the roofs.

The interior is considered as a fluid space in which, as a journey, it travels through the different heights and rooms of the house, enjoying the unique character of each of its spaces. Playing with the scale, the visual connections and the light, it is possible to create a continuous spatial system that structures the spatial experience of the house. The wood, Galician pine, as the only material that unifies the entire interior provides the warmth and reinforces the idea of the new home: the home. 161 2021

In a residential area in the neighbourhood of the historical town of Bruges in Belgium, we can find this beautiful marriage of living and working. The clients, both doctors employed in a hospital in the vicinity, were dreaming of a new house with room for their medical practice at home. After looking around, they found the ideal location in a lot with originally two parcels including an old house. Cas Architects did the rest.

First of all they gratefully made use of the location: a place, adorned with old oaks and beeches. Pieter-Jan Leenknecht: They add to the creation of perception of the project. We chose for an intimate architecture with brick and glass, fitting perfectly in the surroundings. For us, this always is a starting point. The fact that the client, being very interested in architecture as well as design, shared our view certainly added to the success of this project.

In the rather closed-looking facade, the visitor is invited by the somewhat hidden window near the waiting room of the practice. The proper front door, leading to the private section of the house, is situated a bit further to avoid misunderstandings. Cas architects saw to clear separation - acoustic as well as visual – between practice and private by means of deduplicated walls

On the upper floor, a smaller volume that follows the L-form of the ground floor, the sleeping area is situated. Two rooms for children and a guestroom, at the frontside of the building, are separated from the rest by a long hall. At the end of it, there is a toilet and a shared children’s bathroom. The master bedroom with its own bathroom, overlooks the garden while the elongated walk-in dressing stretches out alongside the rear facade.

The interior as well as the exterior are timeless. The long facing brick Kolumba of Petersen makes the house blend very well in the surroundings. The use of glass and aluminium makes the shell of the house excel in minimalism and easy to maintain. The applied materials, such as the Ceppo di gre tile that can be found on the terrace and alongside the rear facade together with a lot of wood, ensure that the line between the inside and the outside is negligible.

The Roof House Looklen Architects

This little home is called ‘The Roof House’ and it is located in Lat Phrao’s area. It is an extension of the old house that is located nearby. The land has a square shape at a size of 16x16 meters; surrounded by residential houses along its three dimensions.Whereas the front area has a small quiet alley passing by.

An owner initiated an idea to build the house that serves several activities and increase usage functions of the old house that he had lived in for more than 15 years. Moreover, the Roof House performs as a common area that gathers a variety of family members’ activities; for example, being relaxing area, guest area, piano lesson area for Saturday and Sunday activities and playground for the dog.

Due to the limited budget and limited space, Looklen Architects designed the layout to be an open plan to connect all functions as one area. Also, this design creates multipurpose functions for future usage. The bordering of an existing tree, which is located in the middle of the land, forms a courtyard in the middle of the house.

The central courtyard is also a focus point of each house functions. Additionally, it causes an airy space that connect to the outside. Still, it provides privacy to the house by using elements of large walls, at the front of the house, that bend towards each other. The Roof House’s character is Tropical inspired.

The roof is designed to be a hip roof, where it has a hole in the middle to create airy space for the house and provide shade for the other areas by its long eaves. The main structure is made from steel; making the house light weighted. The front is the most open space of the house which is built by wide span structure of a 14-meter long. Beside tilted wall is intended to compatible with the middle courtyard. This is to construct interesting perspective when entering into the house.

The architect enhances a homely environment by installing up light along the roof’s side. From the outside perspective, there is a lath fence that acts as the house’s double façade; to build privacy for the Roof House. Though, the neighborhoods are able to appreciate an open space and green area.

An architect intent to unite the house structure and its space to be as one element by the connection of roof’s angle and inside ceiling. The architect also uses wood as a primary material because it generates a warm atmosphere and decreases echo.Furthermore, the connected wood ceiling bonds inside-area with outside-area.

When designing the Roof House, the architect also considers energy saving by adopting passive design method to be harmonious with an atmosphere. The architect detaches one side of the hip roof (North side) to allow more wind and sunlight passing through the courtyard. There are 5-meter windows the face towards the North and the East allow the house to be lighted all day long. Moreover, long-sliding partitions allow wind to flow through the house. When all partitions are opened, they adjust the house’s function to be semi-indoor area. 169 2021
