In 2014 the event will be even bigger than before, covering 230,000 square meters of exhibition space – that’s 15,000 square meters more than in 2012. Despite this expansion, there are still waiting lists for exhibitors in some segments. In terms of exhibitor numbers, too, new heights are being reached: a new record is expected, with around 3,000 companies from 50 countries coming to exhibit here. A total of 56 joint stands from 13 countries will also be taking part. Silvia Fritscher, Exhibition Director of IFAT, is optimistic, predicting that “in this context the proportion of international exhibitors as compared to the previous events will expand still further. The response from the exhibitors, including in particular from international exhibitors, is tremendous.” At IFAT 2012 the proportion of exhibitors from outside Germany was 39 percent. 2014 CERAMICS OF ITALY TILE COMPETITION

A TRADEMARK FOR BEAUTY COMPETITION

Confindustria Ceramica, the Italian Association of Ceramics comprised of over 150 Italian ceramic tile manufacturers, and the Italian Trade Commission announce the official call for entries for the 2014 Ceramics of Italy Tile Competition. This year marks the beginning of the competition’s third decade, honoring the exceptional work of North American architects and designers who create imaginative spaces using Italian ceramic tile. The competition celebrates the pairing of innovative design ideas with products from leading manufacturers of Italian ceramic tile in creating spaces that are well-appointed, versatile, timeless, and sustainable. Recent winners include SHoP Architects, MRSA Architects & Planners, and HDR Architecture. For the 21st edition of the competition, North America-based architects and interior designers are invited to submit new or renovated, domestic and international projects in the institutional, residential, and commercial/hospitality categories that have been completed between January 2009 and January 2014. The jury will judge the projects based on their creativity, functionality, and aesthetic appeal, selecting a winner in each category. Winners will be announced at the Ceramics of Italy International Press Conference during Coverings in Las Vegas, Nevada from April 29 - May 2, 2014, where they will present their projects to the public. The winning architect/designer in each category will receive a cash prize of $4,000 and a 5-day trip to Bologna, Italy to attend Cersaie 2014—the world’s largest exhibition for ceramic tile and bathroom furnishings. An additional $1,000 will be awarded to the winning contractor/ tile distributor team in each category. The Ceramics of Italy Tile Competition is completely digital and free to enter. BRACKET [TAKES ACTION]: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS Hannah Arendt’s 1958 treatise The Human Condition cites “action” as one of the three tenants, along with labor and work, of the

vita active (active life). Action, she writes, is a necessary catalyst for the human condition of plurality, which is an expression of both the common public and distinct individuals. This reading of action requires unique and free individuals to act toward a collective project and is therefore simultaneously ‘bottom-up’ and ‘top-down’. In the more than fifty years since Arendt’s claims, the public realm in which action materializes, and the means by which action is expressed, has dramatically transformed. Further, spatial practice’s role in anticipating, planning, or absorbing action(s) has been challenged, yielding difficulty in the design of the ‘space of appearance,’ Arendt’s public realm. Bracket [takes action] asks: What are the collective projects in the public realm to act on? How have recent design projects incited political or social action? How can design catalyze a public, as well as forums for that public to act? What is the role of spatial practice to instigate or resist public actions? Bracket 4 provokes spatial practice’s potential to incite and respond to action today. ‫‪students from the German University in Cai‬‬‫‪ro are celebrating the soft opening ceremo‬‬‫‪ny of the Model United Nations. GUC MUN is‬‬ ‫‪a student activity in the German University‬‬ ‫‪in Cairo simulating a miniature of the United‬‬ ‫‪Nations. It works on the limitless develop‬‬‫‪ment of the students. Throughout the year,‬‬ ‫‪there are sessions for the delegates to learn‬‬ ‫‪about the UN. At the end of the year, there is‬‬ ‫‪the Grand Opening followed by the confer‬‬‫‪ence. During the ceremony, the organizing‬‬ ‫‪committee head, the Secretary General and‬‬ ‫‪the Graduate Advisor gave a speech about‬‬ ‫‪their experience in GUC MUN and how their‬‬ ‫‪personalities are positively affected by their‬‬ ‫‪contribution in such student activity. Then‬‬ ‫‪they greeted the heads and secretaries of‬‬ ‫‪the model, and welcomed the new members‬‬ ‫‪and delegates of GUC MUN 2014. The cere‬‬‫‪mony was ended by a speech for the keynote‬‬ ‫‪speaker of the event; May Abdel Aziz. May‬‬ ‫‪has dedicated her life to educate children in‬‬ ‫‪South Africa, Egypt and Kenya. She has also‬‬ ‫‪worked with several NGOs in Egypt and as a‬‬ ‫‪volunteer in the United Nations; moreover‬‬ ‫‪she is performing songs for cause, that she‬‬ ‫‪has ended her speech with two of her songs.‬‬

Image © Tonu Tunnel Modernism and socialism formed the powerful spacio-political tandem of the 20th century that shaped much of the urban and rural environments of Central and Eastern Europe, including Estonia and its capital Tallinn. Those environments are still there – like fossils of paradigms, one declared dead, the other exiled. Today we consider them as nothing more than a collection of somewhat interesting material substances or formal oddities – after all, we would rather like to believe this era is not relevant to us today. But is there more to those fossils that we’re not examining? The architects and researchers that were brought together by the Tallinn Architecture Biennale raised interesting discussion and questions that showed how much intertwined history (in this case, the 1960s to the 1980s) and historical ideas are still with us today, especially in a world where freedom might be just as illusional as it was back then.

The large faults indicate (and light) circulations. They divide the building different volumes whose skin reflects the context : very mineral side city, wood forest side … Good building, simple idea, nice details, it looks like it has nothing to hide but… It’s a timber structure building of 5 floors, placed on a pre-existing infrastructure. The wooden building is unmarked. This not ostentatious environmental approach was a bit complex to implement, but it is exciting because it shows that it is possible to build wood without writing specific! BIG, SANAA + OMA AMONG SHORTLIST TO DESIGN AXEL SPRINGER›S NEW MEDIA CAMPUS on may 27th, 2013 it was announced that axel springer AG was hosting a competition to realize a new media campus for the publishing enterprise. at that time, a selection of twenty international firms, both the established and avant-garde, were invited to participate and informed of further steps for tendering. the project site for the new multimedia center, which is set to be home to axel springer AG’s digital and daughter companies, is the lindenpark plot–framed by schützenstrasse in the north, axel-springer-strasse in the east, zimmerstrasse in the south and jerusalemstrasse in the west–within the immediate vicinity of its existing headquarters.

The square court house is a fusion pot between the east and west designed by Samer El Sayary Architects, an Alexandrian based practice. It blends the sciences learned from the eastern classical architecture and tested using the technologies gained from the west. The design approach was different from traditional design model. We first designed the court to capture a piece of nature inside the house and surround it with the architectural program, then solved the architectural program with the urban magnets. The client was obsessed with the view of the mountain on the east

, so we located some rooms to capture such view as the client wanted. The court was different from the traditional islamic arabic houses. It provided the house with double facades, one from the inside and the other from the outside. After the preliminary design we run an environmental simulation in a wind tunnel and computer simulation to design openings that is consistent with the Wind pattern in the place after getting all information from US of Department of Energy. To create air paths through our building mass. Many wind catchers were located to cool every major

space in the building. The thermal fluctuations throughout the year are high, so we needed to provide the rooms with solariums , we decided to design the southern facades with glass walls flexible enough to be opened in summer time and closed in winter time and closing the wind catchers . A lot of open spaces were designed as roof gardens and could be converted to usable spaces as we learned from our previous experience in the Arabic region the continuous change in the family needs by time. ture or social class. The family can increase their rooms without changing the building mass. So the court house is a traditional Arabic factor, but we designed a complete energy model using various software solutions to refine and enhance our design, till we got the exact perfect dimensions for thermal comfort. We used color code to enable visual reading for the architectural program and give an interesting delightful look in the desert context. There was a special interest in the annual solar path of the region, and we changed the angles of orientation to enable early morning and after noon sun to enter the spaces, all harsh solar rays were avoided. We tried to push the boundaries of our architectural legacy to the state of art technologies and concepts to create from the traditional court house a zero net energy and energy sufficient house using solar panels and grey/storm water management. 1- Our house was designed to be a Net Zero building. these buildings actually use no net energy from the grid. The buildings require minimal energy because of efficient design, then use renewable energy to make up the rest 2-After a deep study of Arizona climate We Installed A group of solar panels to give 15 KwH, which is more than the average 22

requirements for a regular family needs for worst case scenarios. With batteries to store the electrical energy for the rainy days. 3-All rooms of the house see the view 4-All rooms of the house have one inner view on the patio and other external view 5-All rooms have a solarium for cold days 6-All rooms are attached with wind catchers to make cross ventilation and natural

cooling on hot summer days 7-All bedrooms are on higher level to protect them from wild life in the place (after a thorough study of the flora and fauna of the area) 8-The architecture of the house are function oriented, that interprets its distinctive form 9-All building is covered by double roof to make natural cooling and decrease thermal mass on the building. 10-Some water ponds are located in the path of the wind patterns to aid in creating water vapor to be carried by the wind to help decrease the temperature in summer 11-The whole building is energy efficient to use natural light and natural wind and sun to eliminate use of all air-conditioning systems and limit use of artificial lighting to night time only 12-The house was designed to create intimate social life and strengthen the family bonds by locating outdoor seating areas inside the patio that could be viewed from all house rooms 13- Bedrooms have total privacy that could be controlled by using curtains 14-The Jacuzzi is located in an intermediate place between master bedroom and other bedrooms on the view of the red mountains and on a higher level 15-A small kitchenette was suggested to be attached with the master bedroom and to serve the Jacuzzi area 16-The inner patio was designed to house all kinds of parties to maximize the entertainment experience 17-Many open areas on terrace was designed as a roof gardens and to act as a bonus spaces for future extensions or additional rooms that would be required in future 18-The view of the northern and eastern mountains could be viewed from the entrance and from the car parking

reform of a garden’ is the renovation of a dwelling situated in a suburban residential area of koma-city, nara that was realized to satisfy the orthodox practices of city planning. the entire town was developed over a short period of time–the houses built with light gauge steel components to reduce construction costs–resulting in a homogeneous looking neighbourhood. SPACESPACE carried out the full-scale refurbishment for a young couple, which saw the local firm also tackling the outer appearance of the home so that it stood apart from the rest of the others. the key feature of the reconstruction is the integration of a concrete plane that runs along the perimeter of the house, measuring roughly the same size as the living space. starting

in the southern garden, the poured structure stands a stepped terrace whose highest point reaches to the second floor of the residence, creating a vertical relationship with the home; its elevated stance allowing its underside to function as a carport. sloping downwards, the independent passage way creates a visual and physical connection between the interior and exterior of the house, forming a continuous path that offers organized circulation in and around the property. the first floor of the structure was originally a composition of smaller rooms which SPACSPACE has converted into a single expanse, hosting the communal areas:

kitchen, living and dining areas, tatami room, while the second storey offers the bedroom quarters. ‘reform of a garden’ integrates the indoors and outdoors, where external reconstructed elements of the home’s architecture has not only been an aesthetic transformation, but also a functional in which some of the windows and their frames function as benches and tables, encouraging congregation with the greenspace that surrounds the site, thus communicating intentions of requiring the trust and communication of adjacent neighbours.

Night photos of the Brazilian capital created by noted architectural and fine art photographer Andrew Prokosare among this year’s winners at the International Photography Awards competition. Entitled “Niemeyer’s Brasilia,” the series of photos capture the surreal architecture of Oscar Niemeyer who shaped the Brazilian capital for over 50 years. “I became fascinated by Oscar Niemeyer’s buildings as works of art in themselves, and the fact that Niemeyer had unprecedented influence over the architecture of the capital during his long lifetime,” says photographer Andrew Prokos. Niemeyer, who passed away in 2012 at the age of 104, was Brazil’s best known architect and the designer of the United Nations buildings in New York. “The 2013 International Photography Awards is thrilled to honor Andrew Prokos’s photographic series ‘Niemeyer’s Brasilia’ in the Night Photography category,” said Linda Dzhema, the award’s Director. “The work was acknowledged by a jury panel of the most recognized names in international photography, and selected to receive the award among over 10,000 participants this year. Congratulations on this outstanding achievement!” The jury for this year’s competition included top international gallerists, photo editors and directors, and art collectors from organizations such as the National Geographic Society, The New York Times Magazine, Yale University Art Gallery, the Royal Photographic Society, the British Journal of Photography, Tate Britain, Taschen Books, and Phaidon Press. About the Winner: Andrew Prokos is an architectural and fine art photographer based in New York City. His photographs have been widely published and exhibited at the Museum of the City of New York. Andrew’s photographs are included in numerous corporate art collections across the USA, including Cisco Systems, Moody’s Corp, K2 Advisors, Hilton Hotels, KPMG, and Booz Allen Hamilton. In addition to his award at IPA this year, Andrew’s photographs won Honorable Mention at the 2013 Prix de la Photographie, Paris (Px3) and at the 2013 Epson International Pano Awards. As Egypt is struggling to make political reform in the beginning of the second decade of the century, there are still many development issues that are yet to be tackled. With a population that is going to reach 100 million citizens soon and an economy thriving to keep stability, the country has many challenges in different fields such as energy, housing, water and unemployment. Have you experienced the several blackouts and stood in fuel queues a few months ago? That was about to be the beginning of an ‘energy crisis’ as experts like to call it. It simply means that consumption patterns are not in harmony with production rates. Egypt is a populous country with a huge amount of vehicles, which increases the demand on petroleum products and fossil fuels. At the same time, the country’s hot 40

climate increases the need for electricity used for domestic cooling purposes. Also being mostly a desert, the country’s water scarcity and the current disputes with the Nile basin countries put question marks on the nation’s water security. These issues severely damage the national security and economy, decreasing investments and harming employment. Green architecture has been tackling these very same issues around the world since almost 40 years. The term means development programs, including housing and economic activities, which are in harmony with nature and its resources. As the UN Brundtland Commission Report put it in 1987, the concept implies making use of the current resources to allocate the needs of people without harming the chances of future generations to allocate their own. This creates what experts call a ‘sustainable development’; a development scheme that lasts, and that is exactly what Egypt needs nowadays. Green building schemes can save up

to 33% of energy consumed in buildings, which is about 15% energy saving with respect to the country’s total energy consumption, nearly the production of the High Dam! With environmentally conscious techniques, housing can also be much more affordable for a wider segment of citizens. Water consumption can also be reduced by 10-20% in green housing patterns. Moreover, green building concepts can help us shift from the existing Nile Valley to the more spacious deserts that make 95% of Egypt’s landscape, as it reduces needed resources and utilizes new clean sources of energy like solar energy and wind energy. For the establishment of these goals, several governmental and non-governmental bodies have been formed in the last years, including the Egyptian Green Building Council that was established in 2009 by the Egyptian Government. With the new spirit that has been born in Egypt after the revolution, we hope the different stake-holders can join hands to create the sustainable development that this country deserves.

the old hürlimann brewery of 1836 in the heart of zürich has been renovated into a contemporary hotel andthermal bath & spa that gets its naturally-heated water from a nearby spring. the original underground wooden vats have been restored and converted into baths of varying temperatures under the original stone arches. vaulted chambers have been converted into auxiliary pools, steam rooms, and lounges, while new concrete forms project into the sky containing a rooftop spring overlooking the city. stone and wood, the original materials used in the barrel filling compound (which now houses the spa) are still used and applied in a more contemporary context. angular geometries present a pleasant contrast to the traditional construction that houses it, until becoming the only expression as the structure reaches the rooftop.

‘cleanlean’ by industrial design students at victoria university of wellington in new zealand is a reclining flat-packable chair intended for spaces such as libraries and airport lounges. the flexible furniture piece uses a pair of linkages that are mounted to its outer frame – enabling different seating positions to be maintained, simply by adjusting one’s body posture. the responsive chair helps to keep a fixed center of gravity to prevent falling out, or tipping over. constructed from fijian kauri wood, CNC milling and

dowel-joints were used for the main structure, while the seat itself incorporates biscuit-joined planks. the modular ‘cleanlean’ chair includes different sized seat backs that are interchangeable the frame is constructed from fijian kauri wood and ball bearing linkages enable a smooth reclining movement the back of the chair showing the hinge, link and dowel connections
