The Islamic civilization with its early, Mamlouk, Andalusian and Ottoman periods moved towards analogy of its components and decoration with flora and vegetations The Renaissance age, developed to a high one and to Baroque and Victorian Gothic. This ended with moving to Revolutionary construction. It prevailed in the twentieth century in the technical industrial. Humanity suffering from technology during the whole 20th century pushed architecture to natural intuitive cycle. Simplicity, minimalism, cubism, purism and economy were realized in basic orthogonal forms. It developed through the 20th century to modern, late modern and Romantic post – modernistic forms. Soon it took part in creating international mediocre commercialism.

Architectural design by intuition can approach the perception of the creator before or after systemization. The designer will start by systematic analysis and move to formalization in which he adopts the technical, organic rational or romantic approach. However with his desire for originality and being a part of architectural historical development he will roam with sketches for an intuition inspired from his systematic approach. Several forms out of nature using new media in arts, crafts, and geometrical relationships hit his imagination. He will start working on them as sole architectural form or as second external enclosures via metaphoric symbolic approach, deconstruction, or fractalization. He finalizes his intuitive physical form by satisfying the required social spaces. However, the opposite can happen with intuitive architects who grasp instantly the program and aspire for a big idea. They will be inspired by the content, history, or by intuitive nature to a new ambitious form suitable to satisfy the program.

[TRANS-]ient MFx WORKSHOP We are now accepting applications for our second year of the MFx WORKSHOP. Like last summer, we will have a team of paid, full-time positions available for undergraduate and graduate students to join our crew from June 5 to August 11. MFx grew out of our interest in being a reflective practice which not only designs and realizes buildings, but aims to learn from our built and unbuilt projects in a critical experimental loop. The “x” is meant to refer to an “extension” of the regular office, one that critically analyzes the work we’ve already completed and explores new trajectories. We’ve found that the enthusiasm and ideas generated by MFx WORKSHOP are just as valuable to the firm’s work as our mentorship is to MFx participants.

It is often thought that architecture has a quality permanence. In the third issue of [TRANS-] journal we seek to understand that this is not always true. Exploring how the construction of spaces can speak to impermanence, transient design could be a variety of things: built one day and disassembled another; rootless, wandering, and drifting as a nomad among environmental and geopolitical conditions; or spaces that house impermanent populations or respond to temporary phenomena or needs. With transient space comes participants that condition its purpose and interpretation. Perhaps of equal importance is not the design itself but rather the symbolic significance of its remnants, which has the capacity to endure or pass.

Seoul Yeoui-NaruFerry Terminal Design Competition Seoul Metropolitan Government is in process of planning on “Seoul Yeoui-Naru Ferry Terminal”And for this, “Seoul Yeoui-Naru Ferry Terminal Design Competition” will be held and announced on February 9. Total prize amount will be approximately 1,045,000,000 KRW, and the winner will be granted a right to sign the design contract. The design competition, as the priority project of the 4 Core Projects of the Han River Cooperation Project, aims to create a ferry terminal which manges water transportation and various vessels including private and government vessels in an integrated manner. The site, one of the tourist attractions in Seoul, is able to display the natural and urban scenery of Seoul. Also, the current facilities on the site are convenient to use among those in the Han River zones and provide easy access to the citizens.

Aedas Unveils Project at Start of Historic Maritime Silk Road Aedas has unveiled its plans for Nansha Kingboard Free Trade Zone Mixed-Use Project, a new building sited at the starting point of the ancient Maritime Silk Road in Guangzhou, China. Located on an irregularly shaped plot with views of the Jiaoman River and Phoenix Lake, the 80,762-square-meter building will be composed of a series of stacked geometric blocks in order to create varied silhouettes and capitalize on surrounding views.

HHF Architects, in collaboration with landscape architects from Westpol, have won a competition with their design for Jardin Métropole, a 30-meter-tall apartment tower and neighboring green space. Located in Biel, Switzerland, the project is expected to become the symbol of the city and contribute to the area’s general enhancement through its angled cube massing and public element. Based on the theme of a “city garden,” the building will constitute the beginning of a new, park-like passage to Rue du Moulin, and will feature access to gardens with private planting beds, a shared roof terrace, and landscaped loggains.

Louis Kahn›s Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad Photographed by Laurian Ghinitoiu In celebration of the life of Louis Kahn, who would have celebrated his birthday on this day, photographer Laurian Ghinitoiu has visited the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmed abad – one of the architect’s seminal projects, which was only completed after his death in 1974. In 1961, a visionary group of industrialists collaborated with the Harvard Business School to create a new educational institute focused on the advancement of specific professions to advance India’s industry. Balkrishna Doshi believed that Kahn would be able to envision a new, modern school for India’s best and brightest. Kahn’s chose not to singularly focus on the classroom as the center of academic thought but rather as the formal setting for the beginning of learning; the hallways and Kahn’s Plaza became new hubs for learning and discourse.

MVRDV + Austin-Smith:Lord Selected to Reinvigorate Downtown Glasgow The Glasgow City Council has selected a multidisciplinary team lead by MVRDV and Glasgow-based Austin-Smith:Lord to transform downtown Glasgow into a “more livable, attractive, competitive and sustainable center.” Titled (Y)our City Center, the strategy calls for a regeneration of the 400 hectare city center that would reorganize circulation and infrastructure while providing new residential options to support Scotland’s economic center. As home to many of Scotland’s major economic institutions, downtown Glasgow serves the needs of 135,000 people on a daily basis, offering a mix of leisure, culture, shopping and entertainment experiences. OMA›s Rem Koolhaas & David Gianotten Selected to Design MPavilion 2017 The Naomi Milgrom Foundation has selected Rem Koolhaas and David Gianotten of OMA for the design of Melbourne’s 2017 MPavilion. The announcement comes after this weekend’s closing of the 2016 MPavilion, designed by Bijoy Jain of Studio Mumbai, which welcomed more than 94,000 visitors to over 287 free events in its 139 day run. Now in its 4th year, the MPavilion program invites architects who have yet to completed a project in Australia to design and construct their first structure in the country. “Rem Koolhaas is one of the world’s most provocative and influential architects, commented Naomi Milgrom AO, Chair of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation who commissioned OMA to design MPavilion 2017. “His contribution to the cultural landscape as an urban thinker together with OMA’s multi-disciplinary approach to architecture reflects MPavilion’s desire to inspire debate about the role of design in building equitable and creative cities.”

RAAAF is Breaking Habits With a Vision of a Home Without Chairs

Dutch studio Rietveld-Architecture-ArtAffordances (RAAAF) has unveiled its latest installation ‘Breaking Habits’ at the Mondriaan Fund for Visual Arts in Amsterdam. Breaking Habits envisages a domestic environment without chairs and couches, exploring a model of diagonal living through a system of flexible carpets. Medical research has shown that sitting for prolonged periods of time is unhealthy. Breaking Habits therefore, aims to depart from our entrenched model of the living room by eliminating chairs and couches. Set inside a Dutch canal house, the exhibit hosts rolls of flexible carpet-like material suspended by metal cables. The user is half-floating, with the ‘magic carpet’ adapting and supporting the body. Different diagonals throughout the room encourage a more active lifestyle by changing position over time.

The Parametric Process Behind the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie›s Auditorium Of all its bells and whistles, the focal point of Herzog and de Meuron’s latest successful endeavor, the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, is arguably the central auditorium, as explored in this new article by WIRED. An incredible example of the possibilities of parametric design, the hall is comprised of 10,000 individual acoustic panels that line the walls, ceilings, railings and balconies. Each of the panels consists of one million “cells” of varying dimensions, created to help define the sound within the space. In order to accomplish this feat, Herzog and de Meuron collaborated with renowned acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota, and Benjamin Koren of One to One, who created the algorithm responsible for the 10,000 unique panels. “That’s the power of parametric design,” said Koren. “Once all of that is in place, I hit play and it creates a million cells, all different and all based on these parameters. I have 100 percent control over setting up the algorithm, and then I have no more control.”

Spotlight: Louis Kahn Louis Kahn (February 20th 1901 – March 17th 1974) was one of the United States’ greatest 20th century architects, known for combining Modernism with the weight and dignity of ancient monuments. Though he did not arrive at his distinctive style until his early 50s, and despite his death at the age of just 73, in a span of just two decades Kahn came to be considered by many as part of the pantheon of modernist architects which included Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe. Kahn was born Itze-Leib Schmuilowsky in Pärnu, in what is now Estonia. His family emigrated to Philadelphia when he was just a child, where Kahn would remain for the rest of his life, completing many of his later works there.

Tadao Ando›s First NYC Residence Tops Out in Nolita Tadao Ando’s first residential building in New York City—152 Elizabeth—has topped out in Manhattan’sNolita neighborhood. A collaboration with architect and designer Michael Gabellini of Gabellini Sheppard Associates, as well as developer Sumaida + Khurana, the project will feature Ando’s hallmarks, poured-in-place concrete, burnished, metal, voluminous glass, and a living green wall. Conceived as an inner sanctuary within downtown Manhattan, the building highlights acoustics as a key consideration, with a façade system and exterior glass enabling a high OITC rating to “ensure a tranquil home environment in the center of this vibrant neighborhood.”

he National Project of Silos, carried out under Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, aims to put an end to the quantitative and qualitative loss of grain, which is resulted from storing in open barns. The project saves 10% of such quantitative and qualitative loss, which causes great losses for the State. The Egyptian Minister of Supply said the modern advanced silos will help save and store wheat, so that no quantities are stored in open areas. The minister explained these silos will help purify and store wheat, deal with stock in a good manner and put an end to wasted quantities. The project will also help classify Egyptian wheat based on levels and issue a certificate of origin for the best ones. Fuzed Magazine has an interview with Eng. Mohsen Salah, Chairman of Arab Contractors Co., who explained the details of this important and vital national project.

FIRST PHASE Salah pointed out that a presidential de mmodate 30,000 tons to store local wheat. The Egyptian government has tasked the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC) with owning and running the national project of silos through Egyptian Holding Company for Silos and Storage (EHCSS). The Egyptian Ministry of International Cooperation has contacted the donating bodies to provide foreign currency-financed soft loans for the projects in proper timing to match the timetables of implementation. Framework agreements have been signed with Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) and OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) to finance the first phase of the national project of silos.

Silos with storing capacity up to 90,000 tons As for the projects funded by the loan of Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) and OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), Salah pointed out that Arab Contractors implemented the projects of silos of Burj Al Arab in Alexandria with 90,000-ton capacity, Al-Hamam in Marsa Matruh with 45,000 tons, Kharga in New Valley with 45,000-ton capacity and Arab Al-Oliaqat in Qalyubia with 90,000 tons. Arab Contractors also carried out the projects of silos of Fayed in Ismailia with 30,000-ton capacity, Sidi Ghazi in Kafr El Sheikh with 60,000 tons and San El-Hagar in Sharqia with 60,000 tons. State-of-the-art methods of storage Salah added that each silos has 12 storing units with 5,000 tons capacity and includes a pit to receive wheat and drive belts to help transfer wheat through the different units. The silos also have equipment to purify, refine and sieve wheat, as well as truck scales and other scales to weigh wheat and filtration systems to maintain a safe environment.

Silos built Salah detailed that Arab Contractors has built 15 silos with 60,000-ton storing capacity under the supervision of the Armed Forces Engineering Authority within the framework of the first phase, which includes 25 silos for storing grain (wheat) granted from the United Arab Emirates to Egypt. They included the grain silos of Sherbin in Dakahlia, Damanhor in Beheira, Hehia in Sharqia, Borqash in Giza, El-Qantara in North Sinai, Mit Ghamr in Dakahlia, El-Sheikh Fadl in Minya, Tanta in Gharbia, Monouf in Monufia, Bahnasah in Minya and Al-Mafalesah in Aswan, which are affiliated to the Egyptian Holding Company for Silos and Storage (EHCSS) of the Egyptian Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade. Al Ahly for Real Estate Development Company has inaugurated Platinum Club Katameya in New Cairo, whose members are more than 5,000. Al Ahly seeks to increase the number of the club’s members to 8,000 or 10,000 and searches for new land to establish similar clubs. Al Ahly intends to start establishing the first three factories for companies working over the land of China’s TEDA in the economic zone of Suez Canal. The three companies include a motorcycle manufacture company and another auto maker, while the third is operating in the extraction and manufacture of gold.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, signed agreements last year to expand Al Ahly’s successful projects abroad. Both Arab leaders signed cooperation agreements in the field of housing, including a deal with Al Ahly. This agreement stipulates that Saudi government will provide land for real estate developers to build housing units in all Saudi cities for poor citizens, as Al Ahly will build the units and market them directly to citizens. During the last quarter of 2016, SODIC signed an agreement to carry out a project over an area of 2.75 million square meters in partnership with Heliopolis for Housing & Development Co. It is scheduled that the project will be completed within 10 years to have an integrated city, while the first phase of the project is expected to be put up by the end of the first quarter of 2017. SODIC has “The Hub” trading center in “SODIC West”, whose leasing area is 17,000 square meters of which 60% is currently leased out. The Hub is a special place for restaurants and cafés only. It represents a small part of the recurrent revenues targeted by the company before 2020, which amount to 250 million Egyptian pound a year. The largest amount of these revenues is expected to be made by the trading center established in Eastown in New Cairo, whose designs are about to be completed. Accordingly, this trading center will be put out to tender this year over an area of 100,000 square meters, in addition to a group of administrative offices. Mustafa Madbouly

Minister OF Achievements

Mostafa Madbouly is the minister of achievements and difficult tasks. Since he has been appointed Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities under former Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab and current Premier Sherif Ismail, Madbouly has made many achievements felt by ordinary citizens. Madbouly’s accomplishments included Social Housing units, Beit Al-Watan and Dar Misr projects, in addition to many urban projects with investments over EGP100 billion. Furthermore, Madbouly created more than 300,000 job opportunities and made several achievements in the sectors of slum areas development, roads and sewerage.

Social Housing is one of the most prominent projects carried out by Madbouly. The two-year project included the completion of 159,000 units with EGP37 billion, while 209,000 units are being implemented, in addition to preparing for offering 102,000 units in different governorates and new cities at a value of EGP13.5 billion. Dar Misris a medium housing project, asEgypt’s Engineering Authority is carrying out the finishing works of 32,000 units in the first phase and has started implementing 26,000 units in the second phase in 12 new cities. Moreover, the Engineering Authority is preparing to provide 55,000 units in the third phase of the project. As for Beit Al-Watan, a project of Egyptian expatriates’ land, it was announced that 4,788 plots of land have been reserved in the third phase of the project. It is also scheduled that fully-finished housing units will be put up for the projects of “Al-Rehab” and “Madinaty.”

The Ministry of Housing has become one of the active ministries under Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisisince Madbouly has chaired it. The ministry signed contracts to implement four urban projects in partnership with private sector with investments of more than EGP100 billion. Moreover, the housing ministry has completed 424 projects of drinking water and wastewater with a cost of EGP30 billion, in addition to implementing 13 roads and bridges projects with 490-kilometer length. The ministry also hasdeveloped 37 slum areas in 15 governorates and is working on developing another 66 slum areas in 18 governorates.

The minister of “achievements” is completing his successful journey in 2017 through developing a number of projects in the cities of the New Urban Communities Authority. Furthermore, the minister will officially launch projects of the new cities, including East Port Said and New El Alamein, in addition to completing development projects in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital over an area of 12,000 feddans. Madbouly seeks earnestly to pump more projects awaited by Egyptian citizens from the Ministry of Housing. The minister hopes that Egypt will be without slum areas.
