is a broad word that pertains to the process of designing And planning the environment which guides and shapes the human behavior. it can Be implemented in countless ways, from different styles and expression to different Functions and magnitude. To achieve a well-designed and planned product, one must Have guidelines that direct the design in a certain direction determining its style and General mood. The design guidelines include the use of local materials, certain Architectural elements, types of openings and general massing composition. many Styles ranging from neoclassic to contemporary and modern are achieved abiding by The same guidelines., Different moods are perceived from each style, some give warmth, richness and luxury, where others give coolness, freshness, and serenity. Eng. Wael Refaat:

Our goal is to grow the adoption of SMART HOMES technology in Egypt and position this technology as essential, easy to use and affordable Our services’ costs satisfy clients… Our ambition is to manufacture Egyptian reliable and competitive product in the long term

Engineer Wael Refaat founded Sphere and contributed to making its progress to become one of the leading smart home providers in Egypt. Fuzed Magazine had the pleasure to interview Engineer Wael Refaat, the Founder & CEO of Sphere:

What are the distinguishing characteristics of Sphere’s services? Our services starts with guiding our clients towards smart homes’ solutions and services, followed by the technical design of the smart home, and ended by building the customized solution that suits each client’s needs, priority and budget. In our proposed solutions, we always aim to make our customers feel secured and safe, manage their home easily, feel entertained in each spot in their houses and save energy at every step of the process. We are committed to provide superior experience and service to our clients, and this is considered a unique differentiation in Sphere favor. What are the smart systems implemented in your projects? The smart systems include security alarms, automatic gates, intercoms, surveillance systems, control of lighting, curtains, and air conditions. They also include the audio systems, home theatres and home cinema rooms. What are the impacts that Sphere made on the Egyptian market? Since it was established in 2011, Sphere made great success in increasing the smart home awareness spread in Egypt day after day. Additionally, we made marketing offers to position the smart homes solutions as “affordable” to large segment in the Egyptian market. Such progress reflects Sphere’s strong capability to achieve continued growth and technological development and leadership.

Contact Us:-

What are the objectives of your projects? Our goal is to make clients enjoy the unique smart home experience in their homes and talk about it positively. Our clients are very important to us, accordingly, we know quite well that the smart homes cost has inflated in the past two years due to the dollar value increase, that is why we decided to build the smart home journey gradually over time. We prepare the home to be SMART anytime in the future, and this is a unique service proposition provided by Sphere. What is your partners’ role in the implementation of projects? We are representatives of reputable international companies in the Egyptian market, such as Schneider Electric, Leviton, Russound, Centralite and more than 20 international reputable companies in the smart home and energy sectors. Our international partners provide Sphere with the latest technology and industry’s know how that makes us up to date in the solutions that we build to our clients. Furthermore, we depend on local partners in different fields to provide full integrated solutions for our clients. What are the obstacles you have faced in the Egyptian market so far? The main challenge at the beginning was the clients’ perception for the smart home systems, they perceive it as difficult to use, “nice to have” not “must to have” and it needs high investment. We have overcome this obstacle by raising awareness about

the importance of the smart systems in the new homes; security and safety, home management and saving energy, in parallel, we built affordable marketing packages that take smart home as a journey not as a one time investment. What are your future goals? We are highly ambitious but at the same time very realistic. First we need to grow our leadership position in the smart home market in Egypt, second, we will work on putting the foundations for smart communities and cities to accelerate the adoption of smart homes on a large scale in the medium term and third we aim to manufacture competitive Egyptian smart home systems in the long term. Are you considering regional expansion for Sphere in the future? We have achieved satisfactory success in the Egyptian market so far and we believe in the future of smart homes growth in Egypt in the coming few years, accordingly, we decided to give all our focus and passion to the Egyptian market until it witnesses the desired developments in terms of market size and adoption ratio, afterwards we will consider regional expansion for sure.

A Private Conversation by Karim Mekhtigian

“The Beginning” sums up a specific moment in time where KM embarks on an introspective to explore the tentacles of his private conversation that has been roaming inside of him. Portraying the great ideas and expectations of a young graduate, ready to jump into life, he begins to recollect those key moments that harbored great idealism but resulted in a sobering reality.

You leave school with great expectations...... As a fresh graduate, I saw myself as a young heroic soldier who wanted to put all his efforts in helping to rebuild a country from scratch... Injected with overwhelming dreams and ideas I strutted down the path of a courageous pioneer ...and ended up designing my dreams on paper.... After the revolution in 2011, the gates for a fundamental change had opened once again and I was gripped by those intense dreams that sprung from my youthful idealism, hoping to participate in rebuilding our nation beyond the usual construction site of a project. But this time around, I had gathered experience and a clear vision which tamed

These are filled with expensive hotels, where one night’s stay exceeds the monthly income of a large portion of Cairo’s citizens.

As a designer, I feel responsible to help induce change for the better, I cannot just DREAM but must also act and get involved. Our contribution must be visible, our participation felt and reflected in every Egyptian’s life.

Today, we live in a city full of contradictions and extremes which are expressed in many layers of the society and culture. Cairo contradicts itself from street to street, offering the curious eye many parallel societies and life styles. That said, we are living in it and make a living out of it. Our Cairo, the impossibility of existence , throbbing

his horizontal or vertical slabs. He was keen on dealing with elevations in prefabricated glass panels. This was adopted by his followers as in Philips Johnson & Sarinen and other works.

Contrast is one source of beauty. In nature we experience beauty of the Alps tops high and pointed reflected horizontal Lemon Swiss Lake with its dark blue green color. The same colors contrast between blue sea water and white foam wave tops braking on yellow sand beaches. In the pretty human face we experience dark coarse eyebrows, red lips, high cheek and pointed chin, positive head and negative neck, hassle coarse hair and smooth skin, large head and minute face details plain forehead and intricate eye, nose and mouth details.

However, external negative spaces were introduced in plans formed by contrasting fingers forming external courts. Each wing is penetrated by appropriate functional fenestration, balconies or curtain walls as we have it in the new Bauhaus by W.Gropius. The external courts are additions to the matter of formal beauty in architecture. The same thing any interior space can be improved with contrasting negative interior niches.

Contrast between parts purifies form, color and texture in different parts of the object to reach the rank of beauty. Contrasts in form can be in lines, surfaces and masses. In Mosques, the negative frontal entrance courts contrast with positive prayer halls. Contrast in modern forms went to extreme by sliding horizontal plastered roof slabs over vertical marble or brick walls. Contrasts were achieved by actual splint filled with air, glass or rubber. The building is purified if it floats above cushions of air with a receding external walls or pilotis. Contrast was induced by le Corbusier in his slab towers in U.N secretarial Building between the two wide glass elevations with contrasting plain walls on the two narrow sides. His horizontal cubic masses were internationally floating on air and carried on pilots. The same contrast was achieved by orthogonal forms for the main body on circular garage in villa Savoy and cité d’habitation with spiral stair way. Contrast can be achieved by high piercing horizontal, vertical or spiral atriums. Classically, architecture form followed a positive compact approved with possible negative open or covered inner courts. This produces all the same perspective from all angles of approach. This concept was very popular in modern architecture especially in Miesian approach in

Sydney Affordable Housing Challenge Debate rages across the country, as experts and analysts go back and forth over the idea of an affordable housing crisis in Australia. One area that all experts can agree on, however, is that Sydney is in a league of its own when it comes to property prices. Sydney comes in second to Hong Kong as having the least affordable housing in a survey of 10 major metropolitan markets. The Guardian Australia reported figures from BIS Oxford economics showing that, as of December 2016, 42% of average disposable household income in New South Wales was being poured into monthly mortgage payments. This is on a median-priced house in Sydney, after the sizeable 25% deposit has already been paid.

Paris School of Architecture Launches Competition for "Brexit Monuments" As part of Paris School of Architecture’s 2017/18 research theme, which is discussing the infrastructural implications of the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union, the institute has launched an international architecture competition seeking Brexit Monuments. The Eurotunnel (providing rail services connecting London to Paris and Brussels), constructed between 1988 and 1994, is an important example of European infrastructural cooperation that emerged from a political ideologue that appears to become increasingly distant, or even impossible to imagine today. Brexit Monuments proposes an architectural engagement with this particularly loaded political issue, a monument to Brexit, located next to the Channel Tunnel entrances in either (or both) France or the UK and visible to travellers using the Eurostar service between London and Paris.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has unveiled new renderings and drawings for their $600 million transformation designed by Atelier Peter Zumthor, as an environmental impact report for the project has been released. The impact report provides some details of the museum plans, which will replace four existing buildings on the east campus with a new 387,500-square-foot building bridging Wilshire Boulevard. While the new space is aimed at providing a more cohesive museum experience, the construction will actually reduce the overall square footage by approximately 5,371 square feet and to combined maximum theater capacity from 716 seats to about 300.

The Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Florida has announced plans for the first-ever public garden designed by Foster + Partners as part of their $100 million expansion project. To feature a variety of native sub-tropical plantings and gathering spaces, the garden is envisioned as “a new social space for the community.” “From the beginning, we have conceived of the Norton expansion as an opportunity to create a New Norton—one that embraces its original design, while also creating a more welcoming and inviting campus,” said Lord Norman Foster. “In our masterplan, it was important for us to define the Norton’s sense of place—in this case Florida’s lush subtropics. To do so, we conceptualized a museum within a garden. We are creating verdant spaces for art and programming that extends the museum beyond its walls.”

LACMA Reveals New Renderings and Drawings of Zumthor-Led Expansion Project

In Warsaw, Poland architecture firm WXCA wins the masterplan proposal for a stretch of riverfront along the Vistula River. The Vistula River Boulevards are among the most frequented public spaces in the city, and gaining popularity as entertainment and cultural offerings become available. WXCA’s winning design for Kahla Square aims to resolve the disconnect between the river banks and to provide amenities to support waterfront activities. Activating the space that ties together the Copernicus Science Center, the Academy of Fine Arts, and future sports facilities, complimentary outdoor spaces are proposed. The Polana Sztuki clearing for the arts, the Park Odkrywców discover park, and the Skwer Sportów Miejskich support the existing cultural attractions while providing accessible ground-floor services for public use.

Heatherwick's Pier 55 Project Given New Life by New York State Governor

Just one month after the Thomas Heatherwick-designed Pier 55 project in New York City was declared dead in the water, opposing parties seem to have come to an agreement that will allow the project to continue, thanks to the intervention of New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo. In early September, after opponents of the project, including the City Club of New York, developer Douglas Durst and environmental activists, had successfully mired the project in a legal battle, the project’s primary backer Barry Diller decided to pull the plug. But now, in an agreement brokered by the governor, the project will be allowed to move forward in exchange for a promise to complete the 4.5-mile-long Hudson River Park – a project which began in 1998 with an intended completion date of 2003.

LA's Natural History Museum to Expand With Transparent "Front Porch" Additions

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM) has released concept designs for the new NHM West/South Project – a scheme designed by LA firm Frederick Fisher and Partners (FF&P) in the first step towards a 10-year revitalization of the NHM as Exposition Park’s historic hub. The extensions would focus on the west and south sides of the museum, supporting new uses and reimagining the programs and spaces of its famous Ice Age fossil site at the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum in Hancock Park.

The Irish Ministry for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht have announced Free Market as the theme of the Irish Pavilion at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale. A team of curators—including Laurence Lord (AP+E), Orla Murphy (Custom), Jeffrey Bolhuis (AP+E), Jo Anne Butler (Culturstruction), Tara Kennedy (Culturstruction), and Miriam Delaney (DIT)—will present an exhibition which explores the common space of market towns in Ireland. “As we know,” the Irish Minister in charge Heather Humphreys TD stated, “these spaces are hugely important for rural communities in our country, and for economic and social engagement in our towns. However, this is also a theme with global resonance.” Ireland’s presence at the forthcoming Venice Architecture Biennale is bolstered by the fact that the Artistic Directors leading the event are Irish; Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara of Grafton Architects will be responsible for the exhibition’s message, angle, and contributions.

EXPLOSIVE IDEAS

Urban planning for the future

“Tikku (‘stick’) can be built

in one night. It takes a stand for the urban planning of the future: as cities grow denser, there is a need to find more agile ways of building and spatial solutions. In an insightful way, Tikku demonstrates the development of cities and a future vision of combining different spaces. A dense urban

structure that combines different purposes offers new opportunities for developing communality and brings life to cities when buildings can also be used outside of office hours. A micro apartment building also sets for us an example of a future,” says Anita Riikonen, Marketing and Brand Manager at Sponda. 2017 E x p l o s i v e

TIKKU is a micro-apartment building with a foot-print of one car parking place 2,5 x 5 meters. It is assembled out of CLT cross-laminated timber

spatial modules and can be erected on site overnight at any car-city of the world. Where ever a car can go, Tikku can grow.

Tikku is a safe-house for neo-archaic

biourbanism, a contemporary cave for a modern urban nomad. It will offer

privacy, safety and comfort. All the rest of the functions can be found in the surrounding city.

ÂŤThe Treetop Âť

A unique adventure over a tree top

The Treetop Experience is a new

and unique experience destination. A 600 meter long treetop walk connected to a 45 meter tall observation tower creates a unique opportunity to take a walk above the treetops and experience the

stunning nature of the surrounding preserved forest from a new perspective. Both the tower and treetop walk function as a seamless continuous ramp that will make the forest accessible for all, regardless of their physical condition.

The Treetop Experience will be located in the preserved forest, Gisselfeld Klosters Skove, one hour south of Copenhagen, Denmark. The area is characterized by a hilly landscape very rare in the region, with several natural elements like lakes, creeks and wetlands. The route passes gently and sensitively through different boreal varieties, minimizing disturbance to the existing surroundings. The treetop walk is split into a high and a low route, with the high route passing through the oldest section of the forest whilst the low route and tower are located in the younger areas.

A design developed

by nature

Sequence House / Youichi Kouno

From the architect. My client whose hobby is D.I.Y wanted to actively en-

gage in the house-building. Her desire was to build storage furniture while living in the house, and the architecture as a vessel is to provide the most comfort and the feel of material quality.

This house’s theme is

ARCHITECT

not only to take advantage of the location’s goodness overlooking the sea but also to have a function as an atelier, and not to build in the internal space too much. This house is divided into two buildings; a residential building and an atelier building.I put a roof on both of them and made a courtyard like a “clearance” in between.

54

2017 E x p l o s i v e

I d e a s

The roof over this courtyard is hollowed out into an elliptical shape, and the feet are connected to the deck that leads to the sea. The atelier building is an one-story ,residential building is a two-story . The roof of the atelier building is a wood deck terrace, which has connections with the external space at various points, so you can feel the refreshing sea breeze. 2017 E x p l o s i v e

Overall, only natural materials such as wood, diatomaceous earth and tiles come out to the surface, and the inner space is kept quite simple. The kitchen directly represents such house design policies. Taking functionality into consideration, the countertop was custom-ordered to a technical company, but the material of the body is plywood. My client will enjoyed making the storage space and finishing the surface. In addition, my client has completed the part of the floor and a wall by herself, and the gardening is now underway from the soil making. This house is changing every time I visit. I cannot contain myself for joy to see the ever evolving “sequence design”.

The outer wall of the atelier

building adopted wooden boards of various thickness, width and kinds, such as cherry, oak, chestnut and zelkova trees. Consider-

able secular change is expected because of the strong sea breeze at the location. I am looking forward to how each wooden board will change over time.

a story “ Great bending” in “One 57” skyscraper “One 57” The tallest building in the world

The story of “The Big Bend “ follows a recent trend that has appeared in New York City: the emergence of myriad tall and slender residential skyscrapers. As the story unfolds, the reader is presented with a provocative thought. He or she is challenged to think of an alternate version of the city that seems to be ever-growing but only in height: “But what if we substituted height with length? What if our buildings were long instead of tall?”

57 STREET BILLIONAIRE’S ROW After the emergence of One57, which was completed in 2014, everything changed for 57th Street. By the first quarter of 2016 there was a 625% increase in it’s sales average. The sudden emergence of One57 and the set of tall and slender residential skyscrapers which were built later operated as a call to wealthy investors from around the world that were planning to buy a New York apartment. Aside from it’s exceptional location, the success of

57th Street corridor has mainly to do with floor area ratio (FAR), the formula that equates to maximum developable floor space allowed at a property. FAR can be stretched really tall with a few tricks.. According to a report conducted by students from the Columbia University in 2010, the streets in the surrounding area had different combinations of 8, 10, 12, and 15 FAR, but 57th Street was the only street with all 15 FAR and in stark contrast to 58th and 59th Streets that have mostly only 10 FAR. 2017 E x p l o s i v e

«Skissernas» Gradual development of museum

The new addition of

slightly bent volumes is projecting itself into the existing sculpture park, releasing it’s grip of the street grid and instead latching on to the diagonal approach through the park. This is the axis of entrance that the large extension by architect Hans Westman dated 1959 was designed for.

with the largest number of manuscripts worldwide

The new foyer space is very tall to

take in both this existing board formed concrete volume and the grown trees of the park, but also to be able to stand up next to the rather massive existing museum volumes. The new restaurant, however, is due to respect for a more recent addition by architect Johan Celsing, dated 2005, kept low to not intervene with the previous extension’s large window facing the park. The original entrance volume from 1959 becomes integrated as a volume fitting shop and reception.

The cor-ten steel, favored by sculptors ever since the material was invented, handles the adjacent historic red brick architecture as well as the rough materiality of the existing concrete volume, yet contrasts to these with the potential of sharp detailing inherent of a panel material. The free arrangement of the facades is composed carefully to get particular views from, into, and through the added building volumes – to reach a transparency without an actual large surface of glass.

MUSEUM

(Skissernas Museum)

From the architect. Since Art Historian Ragnar Josephson started to gather an archive documenting the artistic process, about 80 years ago, Skissernas Museum, Museum of Artistic Process and Public Art, has gradually grown to a large cluster of buildings that, apart from housing the world’s largest collection of sketches, is an important carrier of the identity of the Museum. This is the first extension in the museum’s history that solely addresses its interface, with foyer, restaurant, shop and a multi-purpose hall. 70

For the multi-function

hall in the existing inner courtyard of the museum, a great variation in height of the surrounding buildings and a problem to carry loads in the underlying structure, as well as an ambition not to disturb the existing facades around the courtyard, urged for a solution with a roof soaring high, resting on four columns, and surrounded by clerestorial light. The roof is spanning 27 meters and its ceiling is a hovering plate of mirroring aluminum, all purposed to achieve a spatial experience

which is not clearly indoor, but is keeping some of the character of an open inner courtyard. The furniture of the restaurant, foyer, and shop are all designed by Elding Oscarson, and are deliberately transmitting the unfinished character of a sketch, or prototype. As a total, the intention is for the new addition is to add a valuable experience of architecture within the park, as the Museum gets an updated interface, becoming a more functional place for people to meet.
