INTERVIEW ST. REGIS HOTEL SGG COOL-LITE SKN144
People buying ďŹ nished real estate never inquire about windows and facades, until they face problems and are forced to dismantle them. In my opinion, home glass has to be reective; and double with an inner air gap; which prevents 50% of heat and sound transfer to the interiors. Otherwise, you’ll spend too much on air conditioning and electric bills. Just add a little to the budget and invest in better windows, you won’t be spending much in comparison to how much you’ll save later.
Founded in Paris in 1665, and in Egypt in 2008, Saint-Gobain now operates in 68 countries around the world and exports 50% of its Egyptian production; while serving the construction sector through the production of glass, mirror, gypsum, pipes, insulation materials, and chemical additives. This September, Saint-Gobain Egypt launches an 8M Euros mirror factory with a production capacity of 6M sqm a year! On this special occasion, Mr. Antoine Andrawos; Saint-Gobain Glass Egypt’s Commercial Director, let us see through the glass and mirror market; for better decision-making!
What glass production lines do you have for home and commercial utilities?
ST. REGIS HOTEL SGG COOL-LITE SKN144

From 2008 until today, how did Saint-Gobain Egypt develop through the years? Saint-Gobain operates in Egypt through 4 production lines; the glass line “Saint-Gobain Glassâ€?, gypsum “Saint-Gobain Gyprocâ€?, the ďŹ berglass insulation “Isoverâ€? was introduced this year along with the production of chemicals that are added to concrete and ďŹ nishing materials “Weberâ€?. Now, we’re launching this line for mirrors “MIRALITEÂŽâ€? and back-painted glass “PLANILAQUEÂŽâ€? which will serve interior ďŹ nishing and cladding.

In the Residential sector, we use colored highly reective glass “REFLECTASOLÂŽâ€? to reduce heat absorption and sunlight glare. It mostly has a tint of color, and we need it here because it’s a sunny country and since privacy is necessary. The highest demand is on bronze, followed by grey, then green, and blue. In the commercial sector, the glass must be highly transparent and in huge areas to give better views. But the more glass you have in a building, the more heat you have inside; so we use high performance transparent glass “Ofine rangeâ€? with layers of insulation and a tint of color to prevent glare, but a slight one to enable more light in. We also put chemical additives that reduce heat gain, but which are transparent.
BANQUE MISR SGG COOL-LITE ST767
What’s your advice for homeowners and project developers when it comes to glass selection?
DAR MISR SGG REFLECTASOL BRONZE
For project developers, when you put the added expenses to the unit price, be it an apartment or a villa, this little investment saves a lot of energy in the compound or mall if you’re handling the operation, while making a big impact on the initial cost as well with respect to the expenses of HVAC, like in the case of a huge hotel. We’re always spreading awareness, and project developers now understand what a valuable selling point it is to mention they’re integrating heat-insulated facades. I can see new projects being built in Egypt now according to high principles, and in cooperation with some of the top consultant ofďŹ ces in Egypt and abroad.
UNIVERSITY OF SUEZ SGG REFLECTASOL GREEN
What about mirrors? What speciďŹ cations would you be putting in that line? Mirrors are generally glass with a silver polished in metal layers to prevent silver oxidation. These metals mostly have percentages of copper or lead which negatively affect humans and the environment through the vapors they excrete. We use copper and lead-free imported paints. Generally, all Saint-Gobain products are environmentally-friendly; which helps us get tenders of projects that require sustainable materials, or which should be LEED-certiďŹ ed. 19

INTERVIEW
From your perspective, what factors make a building “eco-friendly?
Swedish University
Following the LEED standards with the energy-consuming elements in a building; air conditioning, lighting, ventilation, and water-heating; from technological and architectural views.
Paramount mall
If we measure the cost of these solutions against the amount of energy [or electric bills] being saved, are they really cost-effective?
A mechanical engineer with a technical experi-
ence that’s been formed through working for Shaker and Dar Al Handasah in Cairo; then traveling among Qatar, Dubai, and KSA; exploring advanced air conditioning technologies. Through 365 Ecology, Eng. Bekhit constructed a strong team that made a peak in business; optimising 80 projects so far, and more to come.
You save 60% of the energy; that’s millions of pounds being saved in a year for ofďŹ ce and commercial buildings! For small applications like houses, variable speed split units are the trend; because central HVAC systems would be higher in installation and maintenance. On the other hand, there’s a challenge in using one to one split units in villas as well, since compounds management would not approve the installation of the condenser units to the facades. In this case, Multi V air conditioning technologies will be the proper architectural solution. It will also save on the infrastructure, through lower cable speciďŹ cations, and lower electricity being withdrawn to the compound from the electric station. The refrigerant used in the inverter technology air conditioning, R 410A, is also eco-friendly. So, this is a better solution from environmental and economic points of view.
Why did you decide to specialize in this market? I was introduced to diversiďŹ ed HVAC solutions during my work in The Gulf, while the market in Egypt was using traditional HVAC solutions which consume a lot of energy. New energy-efďŹ cient HVAC solutions, such as those counting on variable speed technologies, need skilled engineers that can handle the design, installation, and maintenance processes. This is how we became LG’s biggest Multi V solution provider in Egypt, where Multi V is an energy-efďŹ cient central air conditioning technology that is based on variable refrigerant ow [VRF], and which is used for small/medium scale buildings.
Cairo stadium
Tell us about the building solutions you offer, and how they save energy‌ They’re based on energy-efďŹ cient technologies in which compressors change frequency according to demand, such as in the case of the VRF technology. For big projects; it’s more feasible to use centralized air-conditioning systems; in which - most commonly chilled water systems fulďŹ ll the requirements. Through partnering with Sabiana - Italy, we provide advanced versions of these systems; using the variable speed technology. For data centers or surgical rooms; where strict temperature and humidity controls are needed, we partnered with Tecnair Italy. This is added to offering concealed units with inverter-type compressors, which are like Multi V systems, but for smaller-sized buildings; like villas and apartments. Additionally, we offer solutions that generate hot water using the waste heat of Multi V air-conditioning systems; by integrating Multi V and Hydro Kit technologies, replacing traditional water-heating appliances.
