Return of the Rag Rug Rag rug making is just one of many “forgotten skills of self-sufficiency” used by pioneers on the frontier. And, like many others, it has returned more as a hobby or craft, than a necessity. The rag rug is made from long strips of fabric that are braided, coiled and sewn into a flat spiral. They can be solid color, multi-colored, circular, square, left with ragged edges or seamed for a neater finish. They are a great way to use fabric scraps and, as the pioneers can attest, they make great rugs. For a blue jean rag rug you will need to bring 5 pairs of worn out jeans. For the rag rug, you will need to bring old clothes, sheets or long scraps of fabric. Also please bring to class if you can: a portable sewing machine, thread, scissors, seam ripper, quilting mat, quilting acrylic ruler and rotary cutter. We have limited equipment on hand to share. Ages 13+. Instructor: Linda Wade. Registration deadlines: September 29 and November 30. Min. 5. Max. 10. Art Displays
On Display Egyptian Pleasure Garden July 11-November 15 By the time of Ancient Egypt’s New Kingdom period, the nation’s wealth allowed for pleasure gardens at the homes of the most well-off. A pond with colorful fish and lotus flowers, shade trees, palms, and flower beds provided a cool retreat. Fruit trees and grape vines added to the banquet table, while papyrus clustered at the water’s edge. Visitors to our fall garden can relax and admire a distant view of the pyramids. Sponsored by the Wilson Foundation and 95.1 Best FM.
North Woods Holiday November 21-January 3 Imagine the warm and rustic charm of a North Woods cabin during the holidays: ornaments crafted from twigs and cones, drapes of garland, and the display of simple family heirlooms. The rural feel of the setting suggests more moose and bear than human population, but the celebration is heartfelt and cozy in the midst of the big woods. Take family photos or just stroll through the poinsettia-decked Showcase garden as you enjoy our holiday exhibit. Sponsored by the Wilson Foundation, 95.1 Best FM and PBS 39.
Fall Bonsai Display Saturday, October 10, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm Explore a forest of miniature trees carefully trained and pruned by members of our local bonsai club. Elms, maples, junipers and other familiar plants look just like their outdoor cousins – but a fraction of their size! The club also grows tropical bonsai that don’t need special winter treatment. Learn about the fascinating hobby or just enjoy “a stroll in the miniature forest.” Bonsai pots and young plants will be available to purchase. Sponsored by the Fort Wayne Bonsai Club. Discounted admission for the gardens and bonsai show, only $3/adult, $2/ child. Children age 2 and under free.
Get to know local and regional artists in a variety of media through the Botanical Conservatory’s bi-monthly art exhibits, open to view in our meeting room during public hours. Visit our website www.botanicalconservatory.org for links to artists. Regular Conservatory admission applies. Danielle Rosas: Photography/Canvas Print September-October Danielle Rosas has always been intrigued by the “simple” things in life. She loves the idea of capturing raw moments that may seem so meek at first glance but when you look deeper into her photographs there are many more layers of thought. She will use a different lens or angle to create a slight abstract look to some of her photos; for the most part she likes to keep them as is. Danielle’s true influence is Ansel Adams, who sparked this idea of appreciating the fine detail of natural life. Danielle started printing on canvas about three years ago; she appreciates the depth it gives the photos. She feels as though it gives a sense of true texture for the subject. Greg Hughes: Photography November-December Greg is a photography enthusiast who resides in New Haven, Indiana. He’s been passionate about photography ever since taking out a loan for his first camera in high school. His interests are vast, creating his art through whatever his eye and mind envision. His recent work includes concert photography for the Fort Wayne Park Department and commercial work through his place of employment. In addition, his interests include landscape, ocean, urban, flea markets and antiques, and occasional wildlife. His goal is to keep improving his techniques and make his work captivate the viewer’s interest. Although his work has been personal to him, his goal is to have it become more available and accepted publicly. Greg’s work has been published in the February 2013 issue of Modern Steel Construction magazine.

All About Plants
Lacto-fermentation Lacto-fermentation was the process used by cultures all over the world to preserve food before there was refrigeration. The end product has more nutritional value remaining in the food than with any other form of preservation. You don’t need special equipment. It doesn’t heat up the kitchen. There are no heavy canners to lug around. And you don’t need gallons of water to cover your jars to process the food. Presenter Kathy Lee began fermenting in the fall of 2014 with a recipe for kimchi and then sauerkraut. When those turned out pretty well and were fun to do, she tried sweet peppers, celery, carrots and summer squash. The result is a crisp, crunchy, tart snack or side dish to add to your menu. Kathy will show some of the containers she uses and techniques to keep air out of the food during the fermentation period. And she may even have some samples for tasting. Ages 16+. Urban Gardening Tips & Tricks Gardening can be frustrating at times…not knowing why you can’t keep something alive, where or what to plant and the list goes on. Matt Mang from Ag Plus can totally relate and will share some of the hardships he’s experienced during his adventures in raised bed, straw bale, and barrel as well as landscape gardens. More importantly, he’ll also share solutions to common lawn and garden problems as well as the successes he’s had over the years. Hopefully you can take some of his tips and tricks away with you and put them to practice. Ages 12+. Registration deadline: October 1. Min. 10. Max. 25. Vertical Gardening Space isn’t a necessity here; all you need is a small strip of soil in front of your house or even on a balcony. If you like getting more bang for your buck then join Master Gardener Keith Trowbridge as he explains the many benefits of vertical gardening. So make sure and shake your head “vertically” for this class! Ages 18+. Registration deadline: October 8. Min. 10. Max. 32. FootGolf at Mad Anthony III’s FootGolf combines soccer and golf into a fun and fast growing new sport. FootGolf originated in the Netherlands and has spread to over 16 countries throughout the world. Similar to golf, the players’ intent is to kick a ball into the hole with the least amount of strokes possible. There is a tee box, a green, bunkers, hazards and 18 holes of play (just 9 holes at MA III’s). There is par for each hole, mimicking golf’s scorecard, and you still play as a twosome, threesome or foursome. The main differences are the cups, which are 21 inches in diameter, shorter holes and the lack of equipment needed. Come try this exciting new sport at the Mad Anthony III’s in McMillen Park. Adult 9 holes: $7 Youth 9 holes: $4 Family 9 holes: $1 off per player Soccer Ball rental: $5 Children 14 and under play free with a paid adult.

You don’t need to have a hardscrabble youth in order to write a memoir. You don’t even need eccentric parents. Believe it or not, you don’t need anything dramatic . . . and you certainly don’t have to publish it. A memoir is about handing over your life to someone and saying, ‘This is what I went through, this is who I am, and maybe you can learn something from it.” It’s about creating a legacy that doesn’t have dollar signs in front of it but has a far greater residual value for family and friends. It’s a gift that only you can share. Let author Linda Wade help you put pen to paper and begin to tell your story. Ages 50+. Registration deadline: August 27 and October 22. Log Cabin Quilting Folklore attributes the Log Cabin name to the building it portrays. Just as the settlers built their cabins with interlocking logs around the central chimney, quilters construct a log cabin block with fabric “logs” around a center square “hearth.” The center square is often red to suggest warmth. The block is assembled so that the pieces spiral around the center square. You will learn to chain stitch thereby making the quilt easy to complete in the scheduled 6 weeks.
