Dig This! Hands-on Garden Exhibit January 9-April 10 This winter, young adventurers can don their explorer vests and pith helmets to explore mysteries hidden underground. Why do people dig? What do they look for? Try out your digging-and-finding skills with different tools and media. Will you find dinosaur bones? Maybe you’ll uncover fossils and discover cool rocks and minerals. Can a person dig all the way to China? Enjoy our active learning garden as a winter retreat, full of lush green plants and colorful flowers. Regular Conservatory admission applies. Sponsored by Majic 95 and WLDE Fun 101.7.

All About the Butterfly Metamorphosis 14th Annual Live Butterfly Exhibit April 16-July 17 Experience the magic of being immersed among hundreds of live, exotic butterflies. These winged jewels can be observed up close as they fly, feed, or rest in the Nectar Garden. Interactive displays offer information about life cycle, anatomy, and diversity. The adjacent Hatching Lab gives our guests the opportunity to see the unique chrysalises from which the adult butterflies emerge in their amazing cycle of metamorphosis. In addition, you can examine our observation hive to explore the concept of metamorphosis in our colony of honey bees as they rear their brood through all stages of life, as well as forage for nectar and pollen. Once your caterpillar changes into a butterfly you can celebrate its flight by releasing it into the Conservatory’s Tropical Garden. Popularized by the work of Gertrude Jekyll and Vita Sackville-West in England, the mixed flower border epitomizes the tousled and exuberant image of cozy country life. Fortunately for us, this style translates well to suburban America. It affords the “plant collector” who likes a little of everything to organize and happily display their finds. Let Advanced Master Gardener Pam Snyder take you on an illustrated journey discovering the history and components of the Cottage Garden. Then go home with handouts prepared to express your personal enthusiasm for plants in your own garden. Ages 12+. Registration deadline: April 14. Min. 8. Max. 36. DNI: Flower Pounding

Thursday, March 3, 5:30-7:30 p.m. If you have never tried your hand at flower pounding – transferring the colorful pigments of flowers onto paper or cloth to use in crafts or art projects – this is your chance. It’s a simple but fascinating process with an added benefit; when you start to collect and pound flowers on your own you begin to know them by both name and color quality. Master Gardener Kay Musgrave will have the flowers and tools needed.

DNI: What’s in your Soup – the Origins of Vegetables

Thursday, April 7, 6:00-7:00 p.m. When you sip a cup of vegetable soup, you are enjoying the efforts of centuries-old plant explorers who discovered these foods in their native lands and then spread them around the world. Enjoy this introduction to foodways – the intersection of food with culture and history – as Master Gardener Stephanie Bailey maps the route that each familiar vegetable had to take to end up in your soup bowl.

Growing Things Winter-Sowing Spring is right around the corner, but there’s still time for “winter-sowing,” a technique that helps certain flower seeds grow successfully. Some hardy annuals and perennial flowers need a cold treatment called stratification. Master Gardeners Anita Crusoe and Amanda Weimer will bring a PowerPoint to help you understand the basics then teach you how to build a mini greenhouse from recyclables to put it into action. By the end of class you’ll be ready, with seeds and handouts, to try it at home. Please bring a clean, clear 2-liter bottle to class; all other supplies will be provided. Ages 8+. Do miniatures fascinate you? Have you ever wanted to try to grow a bonsai? Now you can get started with a small tropical tree and a beginner’s introduction. Longtime bonsai growers Darlene Kittle and Ed Hake will guide you as you pot up, trim and begin shaping a narrowleaf fig, one of the easiest plants for the bonsai apprentice. Each participant will receive his or her own small tree. Along the way, you will learn about the proper pots and soil to use, how to prune and wire your plant, and the techniques that will give it a long and healthy life. Participants will also be inspired by the many examples on display that day at the Fort Wayne Bonsai Club’s annual Spring Show. Participants should bring their own pruners or scissors; all other supplies will be provided. Great for beginning to intermediate growers. Ages 10+. Registration deadline: May 13. Min. 10. Max. 24. Return of the Rag Rug Rag rug making is just one of many “forgotten skills of self-sufficiency” used by pioneers on the frontier. Like many others, it has returned more as a hobby than a necessity. The rag rug is made from long strips of fabric that are braided, coiled and sewn into a flat spiral. They can be solid color, multi-colored, circular, square, left with ragged edges or seamed for a neater finish. They are a great way to use fabric scraps and, as the pioneers can attest, they make great rugs. For a Blue Jean Rag Rug you will need to bring 5 pairs of worn out jeans. For the Rag Rug you will need to bring old clothes, sheets or long scraps of fabric. If you have a portable sewing machine, please bring it to class. Ages 13+. Instructor: Linda Wade.
