Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation . . .

Salomon Farm Park Salomon Farm Park 817 W. Dupont Rd. Hours: Daily, 6:00 a.m. -11:00 p.m. Salomon Farm Park is a true historic gem and a perfect location for walking, picnics, fishing and much more. The Salomon family established the farm in 1871 and gifted it to the city in 1995 to protect it from development. Our farm animals will return in late April. The 1.8 mile fully paved trail that surrounds the park is used more than any trail in Fort Wayne! Please park in the first gravel parking lot upon entering the park.

Salomon Farmers’ Market Call for Vendors & Entertainers! Wednesdays, 4:00-7:00 p.m. June 7-September 6 Did you know that grocery store food has to travel an average of 1500 miles to get to you? Not so at the Salomon Farmers’ Market! Our vendors produce their goods within a 75 mile radius from Salomon Farm Park. Our produce vendors are required to grow their own fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs and we strive to find vendors who embrace sustainable and organic growing practices. The market also may include baked goods, honey, maple syrup, handmade craft vendors, food vendors, entertainment, and children’s activities. Anyone interested in vending must complete a vendor application. Contact Kellie at 260-427-6005 or kellie.adkins@cityoffortwayne.org for more information.

Salomon Farm Fiber Arts Celebration! Friday, May 12, 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. & Saturday May 13, 10:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m. Salomon Farm Park, 817 W. Dupont Rd. Join us at Salomon Farm for a two-day celebration of fiber arts. With a focus on education, we will have hands-on participation and demonstrations in all of the processes of making natural fiber products – wool dyeing, spinning, weaving and more. Vendors specializing in fiber arts will sell equipment and supplies such as spinning wheels, wooden knitting needles, looms and shuttles, felting needles and forms, and crochet hooks. Natural fiber including wool, alpaca, silk and cotton, as well as hand-made fiber products such as sweaters, mittens, shawls and more will also be for sale. Visit with live sheep and alpaca! Food vendors will also be on the grounds. The Fiber Arts Celebration is co-sponsored by the Flax and Fleecers Spinning Guild of Fort Wayne and the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department. Call Karla at 260-4276008 for more information. Due to the nature of this event, pets are not allowed.

We make FUN of everything!

It’s All About the Butterflies “Perspectives” Live Butterfly Display

Butterfly Volunteers Needed at Conservatory

April 8-June 25 At the Conservatory’s newest exhibit of live butterflies, you’ll get at least three perspectives on these winged creatures as well as “up close and personal” time in our exhibit tent! With design input from Ball State University students, the garden offers you views from microscopic, backyard, and global angles. Match our display species with their country of origin. Learn which plants are essential for the caterpillars from which local butterflies grow. And get a super-close look at the awesome wing scales, proboscis, and compound eyes of our butterfly friends. You won’t look at butterflies the same way again. Regular admission applies. Sponsored by 97.3 WMEE.

Training in March to help April-June As the Conservatory prepares for its 15th year of live butterflies, the staff is looking for volunteers to assist in monitoring the entrance and exit vestibules of the new exhibit. Butterfly Attendants assist visitors with exhibit protocols and in preventing butterfly escapes, while helping to make the guests’ experience positive. Volunteers can choose among 2- or 3-hour shifts Tuesdays through Sundays. Training is required; multiple class dates are available. Register for training with volunteer supervisor Rebecca Canales by calling (260) 427-6442 or by email at rebecca.canales@cityoffortwayne.org.

Calhoun St. Visit the Botanical Conservatory’s Home & Garden Show booth March 2-5 to learn more about butterfly gardening and participate in our public “Hatch & Release” program in late March! Once your caterpillar changes into a butterfly, you can celebrate its flight by releasing it into the Conservatory’s Tropical Garden. If you miss the Home Show, kits can be purchased at the Conservatory Gift Shop starting in March. For more information, call (260) 427-6445.

Relax and Revitalize Forest Bathing (Shinrin-Yoku) Forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku, is the experience of immersing oneself in the sensory gifts of nature. This can be done in a forest setting, but also in gardens and parks. The benefits are not only a greater sense of well-being, but a boost in immune function and ready access to lower stress hormones and boosts in serotonin levels. This is not your regular walk in the park, but a series of invitations using the senses to rediscover your inner child and your connection with the natural world. Being relaxed, revitalized, and better equipped to handle the stresses of daily living are the goals of this forest bathing walk. Instructor Christy Thomson is a life-long resident of northeast IN. She is the only certified forest therapy guide in Indiana and is thrilled to share this opportunity with the Fort Wayne community. Registration deadlines: April 6 and May 18. Ages 18+. Min. 5. Intro to Colored Pencils

Return of the Rag Rug Rag rug making is just one of many “forgotten skills of self-sufficiency” used by pioneers on the frontier. Like many others, it has returned more as a hobby than a necessity. The rag rug is made from long strips of fabric that are braided, coiled and sewn into a flat spiral. They can be solid color, multi-colored, circular, square, left with ragged edges or seamed for a neater finish. They are a great way to use fabric scraps and, as the pioneers can attest, they make great rugs. For a Blue Jean Rag Rug you will need to bring 5 pairs of worn out jeans. Chair Caning It is very common for a cane chair to start losing its caning long before the frame itself begins to deteriorate. If you have a chair that’s in good shape structurally, you can replace the cane yourself and return the chair to its former glory. Painting or varnishing the frame should be done in advance, if needed, and your chair must be stripped of cane and have holes around the seat area. We’ll provide the cane and the instruction necessary to complete your chair seat by the end of the 5 week class. (Please note: This class overlaps with the Chair Recovery class for an hour.) A supply list will be provided when you register and can also be found on our website at www.fortwayneparks.org. Writing Your Memoirs You don’t need to have a hardscrabble youth or eccentric parents to write a memoir. You don’t need to have lived a life of drama . . . and you don’t have to publish it. A memoir is about handing over your life to someone and saying, “This is what I went through, this is who I am, and maybe you can learn something from it.” It’s about creating a legacy that doesn’t have dollar signs in front of it but has a far greater residual value for family and friends. It’s a gift that only you can share. Let author Linda Wade help you put pen to paper and begin to tell your story. Ages 50+. Registration deadline: April 27. Min. 6. Max. 10. Cross Stitch for Beginners

You’re So Creative! Curious About Crochet One of the greatest things about crochet is that you don’t have to invest in fancy, new materials or find room in your house to store a bunch of equipment. With just a simple hook, a skein of yarn and a nice, comfy place to sit, you can begin enjoying all the benefits this craft provides. In the Beginner Class, we’ll get you started with a few basic stitches and show you how to read a pattern. You’ll leave this class with a Granny Square lap afghan and a new hobby. Please bring to class a size K crochet hook and one skein of 4-ply yarn in a light color. The Advanced Class is for those who know the basic stitches and can read a basic pattern. You will learn advanced stitches to crochet stand-up flowers and make sample blocks of the advanced stitches that can be used for afghans and pillows. Bring your “yarn stash” (especially green for the leaves) and hooks. Ages 50+. Instructor: Berniece Wilkins. Registration deadlines: March 15 and March 17. Min. 4. Max. 5.
