“A North Woods Christmas”
November 21-January 3, 2016 Imagine the charm of a North Woods cabin during the holidays: nestled into a snow-drifted evergreen and birch forest, the homestead is preparing for Christmas. Indoors, the rustic table is set for our couple, who may be off checking traps, drawing water, or gathering twigs, moss, cones and grapevine for decoration. The outhouse, sawbucks, and lantern indicate how far off the beaten path you find yourself. Woodland animals make brief appearances throughout the scene. While the rural feel of the setting suggests more wolf and bear than human population, the celebration is heartfelt and cozy in the midst of the big woods. Take family photos or just stroll through the poinsettia-accented Showcase garden as you enjoy our holiday exhibit. Thanks go to the many Fort Wayne citizens who donated spruce and pine trees for this exhibit. Sponsored by the Wilson Foundation, Majic 95.1, Wells Fargo Charitable Trust and PBS 39.
Holiday Kick-Off Party Wednesday, November 25, 5:00-9:00 p.m. Enjoy hot chocolate and a cookie, meet Mrs. Claus, and get a free professional-quality photo with Santa. You can also meet two live reindeer that know all about the North Pole. The gardens are decorated for the holidays, and you won’t want to miss the animated light show outdoors. Be sure to participate in the Fort Wayne Downtown Lighting Ceremony either before or after your visit to our beautiful holiday garden and displays. No reservations required. Regular Conservatory admission fees apply. Sponsored by PBS 39 and Majic 95.1.
Garden in Lights November 25-January 3 We’ve decorated not only the Showcase House, where you’ll find the customary poinsettias and evergreens, but the Tropical and Desert Houses and the outdoor gardens as well. Especially effective during our evening hours on Thursday and Friday nights between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the gardens are lovely throughout the holidays and provide a tremendous backdrop for family photos, out-of-town guest entertainment, great conversations, and even marriage proposals! Make the most of your visit as you enjoy one of Fort Wayne’s treasured resources for beauty and relaxation. Our gift shop will also be open during public hours for holiday shopping.

Their fossil remains are abundant in coal deposits around the world. In this session, we’ll examine examples of fossilized roots, stems and leaves of Coal Age plants and compare them with living relatives. Included will be photos from a fossil dig in eastern Kentucky that revealed nearly 20 feet of Lycopod root.

January-February Inspired by growth, transformation, and change Julie utilizes an array of natural organic imagery paired with simplified geometric shapes to create pieces that depict a balance between two worlds. Push and pull, give and take, ebb and flow are ideologies behind her current work. She is interested in the fragility of life and the unavoidable presence of death, and our necessity as a culture to fill our lives with things, people, and situations we find difficult to handle. Julie’s recent work utilizes two different printmaking techniques: relief printing and intaglio printing, one being an additive way to create an image and the other subtractive. Pairing the two together allows her to explore textures and layering. Her more traditional 2-dimensional work is complimented by the use of 3-dimensional objects altered slightly to fit her overall theme. Julie enjoys creating work that not only hangs on a wall but encompasses the space around the viewer, bringing them into the work.

You’re So Creative Writing Your Memoirs You don’t need to have a hardscrabble youth or eccentric parents to write a memoir. You don’t need to have lived a life of drama . . . and you don’t have to publish it. A memoir is about handing over your life to someone and saying, “This is what I went through, this is who I am, and maybe you can learn something from it.” It’s about creating a legacy that doesn’t have dollar signs in front of it but has a far greater residual value for family and friends. It’s a gift that only you can share. Let author Linda Wade help you put pen to paper and begin to tell your story. Ages 50+. Registration deadline: January 14 and March 3. Min. 6. Max. 12.
