Alexandra Hall: Painting, Giclee Print, Ink Drawing

“A Mary Poppins Garden Party” January 14-April 2 When there’s a bit of heavy weather brewin’ outdoors this winter, bring the children down to the Conservatory to explore the new Mary Poppins-themed garden exhibit. Jane and Michael Banks seemed always to be in trouble. But after their new nanny arrived (in a most curious way, mind you), nothing was the same. Their time in the nursery and out for adventures taught both self-discipline and wonder. Discover Mr. Banks’ world of finance, Admiral Boom’s punctuality and nose for weather, a chimneysweep’s rooftop perspective, and the magical imaginings of Bert’s chalk drawings and carousel horse steeplechase. Decorated with winter-blooming cyclamen, primroses, and pocketbook plant, the gardens offer grown-ups a breath of spring while they explore alongside their youngsters. Can you say Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious? Sponsored by WLDE and Majic 95.1FM

Tea & Etiquette You’re invited to enjoy an English tea and to explore its long tradition. Debbie Woodruff, tea lover and former owner of the Peony Tea House, will show you how to prepare tea properly and how to serve and receive it with grace. What better setting in which to learn the art of hospitality than over treats and tea at the Botanical Conservatory? Ages 15+. Registration deadline: January 12. Min. 10. Max. 30. November-December Reception: November 6, 1:00-3:00 p.m. Alexandra Hall is a dreamer, and she enjoys creating fiction on canvas. In her pieces she tries to emphasize the good and the whimsical in the world around her. It is her hope that her work inspires conversation, smiles, and joy. Self-taught in the beginning, Alexandra found painting to be a cathartic endeavor, but as her skill grew she had her first show in 2013. The positive reception for her work spurred her on to show her pieces at Northside Galleries and to enter local and regional shows. By 2015, Alexandra was able to pursue art full time. Meet the artist during an informal punch and cookie reception on Sunday, November 6, 1:00-3:00 p.m.

Patricia Biesen: Pastels, Ink Drawing & Acrylic January-February Reception: January 15, 1:00-3:00 pm Patricia Biesen was educated at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and School of Decorative Arts in St. Louis. She lived and worked in Chicago for three decades and is a newcomer to Fort Wayne. Her work has been featured in Woman Made, Gallery 312, and David Leonardis in Chicago. She draws inspiration from flowers and weeds for both their beauty and medicinal value. Her work, using oil pastel, pen and ink, and acrylics will be featured at the Botanical Conservatory in the Saguaro Room during public hours. Meet the artist during an informal punch and cookie reception on Sunday, January 15, 1:00-3:00 p.m.

Writing Your Memoirs You don’t need to have a hardscrabble youth or eccentric parents to write a memoir. You don’t need to have lived a life of drama . . . and you don’t have to publish it. A memoir is about handing over your life to someone and saying, “This is what I went through, this is who I am, and maybe you can learn something from it.” It’s about creating a legacy that doesn’t have dollar signs in front of it but has a far greater residual value for family and friends. It’s a gift that only you can share. Let author Linda Wade help you put pen to paper and begin to tell your story. Ages 50+. Registration deadline: January 12. Min. 6. Max. 12. Clay and Glass Beginning Pottery Pottery is one of the most ancient arts. Excavations in the Near East have revealed that primitive fired-clay vessels were made there more than 8,000 years ago. You will learn hand building and wheel throwing techniques, how to prepare clay, select a design, and various glazing techniques. Return of the Rag Rug Rag rug making is just one of many forgotten “skills of self-sufficiency” used by pioneers on the frontier. And, like many others, it has returned more as a hobby or craft, than a necessity. The rag rug is made from long strips of fabric that are braided, coiled and sewn into a flat spiral. They can be solid color, multi-colored, circular, square, left with ragged edges or seamed for a neater finish. They are a great way to use fabric scraps and, as the pioneers can attest, they make great rugs. For a Blue Jean Rag Rug you will need to bring 5 pairs of worn out jeans. For the Rag rug, you will need to bring old clothes, sheets or long scraps of fabric. Also please bring to class if you can: a portable sewing machine, thread, scissors, seam ripper, quilting mat, quilting acrylic ruler and a rotary cutter. We have a limited number on hand to share. Ages 13+. Instructor: Linda Wade. Registration deadlines: January 17 and February 13. Min. 5. Max. 10.
