Fr OM BILL Fr EEMAN The bes T of Nashville? iT’s our people, our his Tor y aNd our co NNec Tio Ns To each oTher. We’ve heard a number of times recently — and I haven’t always disagreed — that Nashville is losing its heart and soul during its rapid transformation. In this, the Scene’s Best of Nashville issue, I want to propose that the best of Nashville isn’t disappearing. I do worry that our rapid growth is hurting our neighborhoods, and I worry about what that could mean for the fabric of Nashville. When neighbors who’ve lived on the same street alongside each other for many decades are abruptly displaced by tall-and-skinnies, it damages the nature of our city and jeopardizes what affordable housing and working-class neighborhoods we still have. We definitely need to consider what our growth is doing to Nashvillians of all ages and incomes, but its impact on our working class and our elderly residents concerns me the most. Even so, there is much to honor and celebrate in our city, and the best of Nashville is still here. I don’t think the “new” has entirely erased the “old.” In many ways, it has added to the best of our vibrant city. The best of Nashville has stood the test of time. Nashville now has 178 city parks facilities, including our oldest, Watkins Park, which was established in 1901. We’ve increased our greenspace, and kept many of the older parks that native Nashvillians remember from their childhoods. The Edwin and Percy Warner parks — established in 1937 and 1926, respectively — have seen essentially five generations pass by their stone walls. Centennial Park, established in 1903, continues to be a fixture in our arts and greenspace communities. Fort Negley, arguably one of the most treasured Civil War sites in the entire country, has been a part of our city parks since 1928, and it may soon receive some much-deserved attention, to finally fully preserve it for future generations. New Nashville deservedly takes great pride in its dynamic restaurant scene, which has seen many new establishments open — and many close their doors. Each fixture we lose is a little bit of Nashville that can’t be regained. But there are still establishments that have stood the test of time: the Capitol Grille and its venerable Oak Bar (the latter opened in 1910), Jimmy Kelly’s (1934), Elliston Place Soda Shop (1939), Bobbie’s Dairy Dip (1951), Wendell Smith’s (1952), Swett’s (1954). All of these restaurants have been

serving customers for the better part of a century (or more!) and are still going strong. The places we eat with friends, with business associates and, most importantly, with our families, are an important part of our city’s history and an important part of our family memories. Much the same can be said of the wonderful places Nashvillians go for fun, entertainment and education. We shine in this category, from the Grand Ole Opry’s stage to the Nashville Public Library’s Grand Reading Room — our facilities are without comparison. It’s no accident that our library earned the distinction of being named the best library in the world by Gale/Library Journal just two years ago. The Grand Ole Opry has been entertaining listeners ever since it first went on the air on Nov. 28, 1925. We’re nearing the Opry’s 100th birthday — an impressive anniversary for the world’s longest-running radio show. Not to be outdone, our Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum does a remarkable job of capturing, preserving and celebrating our musical history. Since the hall first opened

in 1967 on Music Row and quickly became one of the most exciting field-trip locations for countless school children, it’s grown into its impressive current facilities — including 350,000 square feet — bringing in 1.2 million guests in 2018. I think many of the best things that make Nashville so unique are not gone. They’re still here, shining amid our new growth. Our city may indeed be changing, but as long as we keep the best of Nashville thriving, then Old Nashville and New Nashville will remain one and the same. But what is truly the best of Nashville? Its people. Old and new, young and old. Nashvillians are the best of Nashville.

Windows of the World A new anthology amplifies the voices of Nashville immigrants and refugees

Words Are Windo ws: An Anthology of Immigr ant and R efugee Voices Launch party 3 p.m. Sunda y, Oct . 20, at The Porch, 2911 Do gw ood Place anna Silverstein Bittersweet Reality of Being Undocumented,” details the conflicted emotions she felt when DACA passed. “I remember realizing that being undocumented had become a part of my identity,” Vasquez writes, “just like being a woman, a college student, a Nashvillian, or a pet lover. Being undocumented had introduced me to friends, given me purpose, and helped me find a passion for advocating for social rights.” In a typical class, students study a piece of writing from authors like poets Chen Chen and Li-Young Lee and fiction writers Helen Olajumoke Oyeyemi and Naomi Shihab Nye. Usually, Silverstein assigns an inclass writing assignment. Students have the option of developing one of these works — or something else entirely — through peer critique and feedback from Silverstein. “The workshop and Anna were able to create this sense of community and security and feeling comfortable sharing with each other,” says Vasquez. “And I think people being open to sharing those stories made me feel comfortable sharing my own.” Words Are Windows is published by In-

n fall 2016 The Porch, Nashville’s nonprofit organization for writers, launched a new workshop specifically for immigrants and refugees in Nashville. Free of cost, the workshop — which launched just before the presidential election — required no ID or documentation to enroll, and the organization stressed that fluency in English was not necessary. It was the brainchild of writer and educator Anna Silverstein, who has now taught seven iterations of the course, with students from every continent except Antarctica and Australia. This month, students will see the fruits of their labor in print with a new anthology. Words Are Windows: An Anthology of Immigrant and Refugee Voices will showcase the stories, poems and essays of 26 contributors from 22 countries. “As the granddaughter of immigrants,” says Silverstein, “I saw the barriers that prevented my grandparents from sharing their stories the way that they would have liked to. So I have a very personal motivation in teaching this workshop and editing this anthology.” The Porch will host a launch party at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, at The Porch headquarters, and organizers say all are welcome. The anthology is full of compelling short-fiction stories, poetry that distills both painful and joyful moments, and memoiristic essays. Nadreen Bagoun — who was born in Khartoum, Sudan — opens the anthology with her short story “Home.” In it a Sudanese immigrant named Kamal has recently bought a 1993 Toyota Corolla that barely runs — but to Kamal, the car represents status and success. Bagoun skillfully weaves the events of her protagonist’s weekly visit to Goodwill with his memories of home and hopes for a future visit there, with heartwrenching results. Another writer, Drenusha Kolshi, escaped the civil war in Kosovo with her mother when she was 6. Kolshi published four pieces in the anthology that explore the theme of fear. In her poem, “Inheritance,” she writes: I imagine being birthed with hesitance. My mother asking the midwife Are you sure she’s ready? Will her softness turn to stone? Silverstein says there was no expectation that students write about their experiences as immigrants or refugees, though some did. Karla Vasquez has participated in all seven iterations of the workshop. She moved to Nashville from Mexico City when she was 12 years old, and in 2012, she was granted temporary residency through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Her essay in the anthology, “The

gramSpark and funded through a donation by Ingram Content Group. You can buy the anthology at the Oct. 20 event and at The Porch’s website, porchtn.org. The next class begins on Oct. 21, and Silverstein is handing the reins to instructor Nina Adel. We’ve published an excerpt of Silverstein’s editor’s note, which introduces the anthology, below.

When I was young, and my grandparents were still alive, they didn’t tell me many stories of their childhoods in Poland or of their lives when they first came to America. However, there is one story of my grandfather’s that stands out to me: when he came to the U.S. at age fifteen, he was placed in a kindergarten class in a New York C ity public school because he knew no English. On the first day, the five-year-old at the desk in front of him turned around and stabbed my grandfather in the back of the hand with a pencil. “What did you do?” I wanted to know. “What could I do? I was three times his size. I wasn’t about to beat up a little kid.” I pictured that scene, even though I could hardly believe it. A fifteen-year-old crammed into a tiny desk, the little kid looking back with narrowed eyes, cold, appraising, what are you going to do about it?, as the two of them looked at the pencil. The pencil. Had it broken the skin? Was it just there, sticking out of the back of his hand while the teacher did nothing? I’d never had a first day of school like that, still I could see it. This is the power of words: to create windows into other scenes, stories, lives. To offer a glimpse of something outside our own experience. What did coming to this country mean to my grandparents? It was life, starkly. Almost every Jew who remained in their village in Poland was murdered in a mass execution in 1942. For many immigrants and refugees today, this country, despite its many problems, means life. We live in a time when some people want to close our borders, say that only those who arrived before a certain date, or those who come with money, or an education, or from certain countries, are welcome. It is incumbent upon all of us who now inhabit this land to speak, to make our words known and our voices heard, to represent our own individual experience and perspective, to face the history of this country and work to make it a more welcoming, inclusive, and just place for all.

Pho to: Daniel Meigs

By Er ic a Ci cc ar o ne

For the last four years, I’ve led a creative writing workshop for immigrants and refugees in middle Tennessee. One evening a week we would gather together and discuss writing, read published work, share and offer feedback on writing in progress. One night during class, for no particular reason that I could identify, the feeling came upon me so strongly: how strange, how improbable, that here we were, people who had been born in so many different parts of this planet, more than two dozen countries, five different continents, and here we were, in a room with strangely shaped tables in Nashville, Tennessee, writing together. It seemed so unlikely, thinking of all the events that had taken place in each person’s life, the good, the bad, the choices and exigencies, that had led up to all of us finding ourselves together in the same place and time. And yet, there we were, and how magical, that this unassuming classroom would be the place where our lives would intersect and we would write, read, and create together. Words are windows into lives we haven’t lived, places we’ve never been, experiences we’ve never had. Often in our workshop, one writer would say to another, “I’ve never been anywhere like that but I can picture it exactly from how you described it.” Words can be windows to another country, culture, experience, to the unexpected similarities and differences. Words—even someone else’s words—can be windows into our own pasts. During one of our class sessions last winter, one student was brought to tears by another writer’s description of a traditional breakfast food from their shared home country, a food he hadn’t eaten in years. Words can be windows looking out onto familiar settings, but with a new perspective: seeing that same scene from the eyes of someone who’s seeing it for the very first time, or from a very different vantage point. We live in times where we are inundated with news of refugees fleeing wars and climate disasters, drowning in shipwrecks off the coasts of countries that are closing their borders, where children and parents are separated and confined in appalling conditions at our own borders. Words are windows that save us from growing inured to these horrors, from growing hopeless, worn out, resigned. Words can activate the senses, make the reader feel as though she is not only looking through a window, but in fact has stepped through it herself. Email edit or@ nashvillesce ne.com

For a more interactive experience, test your cooking skills at Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen, an award-winning cooking school, or bake and decorate a cake at Sweet Spot Studio, a hands-on baking classroom. And for the DIY enthusiast, mix and pour your own candle at Paddywax Candle Bar. Other can’t-miss fall traditions in Charlotte include a stop at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, a museum dedicated to the history and heritage of NASCAR; exploring picturesque, tree-lined streets in Myers Park; or sipping on a fall craft beer from one of the city’s 60plus breweries.

That’s us, clad in black and red with a tophat and megaphone, shouting out the various artists, restaurants, bands, activists, podcasts and pet stores that make our city great. From chefs and bakers to ceramics makers, from Nashville Predators to magazine editors, this issue has it all. In the 31st iteration of our annual Best of Nashville issue, we bring you both our readers’ poll winners and our writers’ choices — scores of entries gathered up from every corner of town. What’s our writers’ choice for Best New Restaurant? Who did you, our dear readers, select as Nashville’s Best Place to Take Out-of-Towners? Best Doughnuts? Best Wrestler? Best Jazz Vocalist? It’s all here, and loads more. Step right up, folks, and take a gander at our fair city’s world-class attractions. It’s the Best of Nashville 2019.

Best restaurant, writer’s choice: folk

Best Rest au rant

Folk

Maybe it’s no surprise that last year’s Writer’s Choice for best new restaurant, chef Philip Krajeck’s Folk, should pop up this year under the category of all-around Best Restaurant. But such a transition is hardly automatic. Nashville’s restaurant annals are littered with stories of restaurants that started out spectacularly but fizzled before the year’s end. That’s why it’s delightful to award Folk the further honor in its sophomore year. It makes sense when you think of it, though. Krajeck waited almost six years after launching his pioneering Germantown restaurant Rolf and Daughters before opening Folk as his second establishment. The man is meticulous, and all the lessons he’s learned over the years have gone into creating and maintaining Folk. Krajeck still identifies the best seasonal ingredients, thanks to his team’s efforts to cultivate the region’s best farmers and suppliers, and it shows. Because of the seasonality, the menu changes frequently, but a few beloved items are always at hand, like the truly celestial clam pizza. And a further point: It’s important for a kitchen to have a detailed knowledge of menu ingredients. For example, I dined recently at Folk with a friend who has a soy allergy, and when asked, the kitchen

could point to the exact dishes that were safe (nearly all) and the one that might pose a problem. I don’t feel that sense of confidence in the pronouncements of most kitchens. Everything on Folk’s menu is carefully sourced, and there are no sloppy surprises. Over the months I’ve also come to further appreciate the convivial comfort of Folk’s dining room. It somehow feels lively and bustling while still allowing conversation between diners at a normal volume. And the bar, facing the building’s front storefront windows, is a great place to hang out. There are cocktails of course, but I enjoy dabbling in the wine list. Folk says its guidelines mandate the selection of wines only from vineyards that are farmed and vinified organically, meaning there’s a lot of relatively obscure bottles to explore. The servers are knowledgeable about the wine list, but it’s also fun to sit at the bar and let the bartender regale you with even more detail. As I noted last year, Folk’s menu prices aren’t total budget busters, so the entry point is relatively accessible. You could pile on the dishes and have a special-event meal, or you could just zip in for a snack or pizza at the bar, spending much less. Almost a year-and-a-half after it opened, Folk is a welcoming place that never disappoints. DANA KOPP FRANKLIN

Best bar, writer’s choice: bastion

Best Bar

Best New R est aura nt

The bar at Bastion is not for completists. It doesn’t have the most beers (although it has a lot) or the most cocktails (although it has a lot of those, too). It doesn’t have the biggest food menu or a stunning interior (their decor could charitably be described as “painted” with a hint of Donnie Darko). No, the most remarkable thing about the Big Bar at Bastion is just how comfortable it feels. Want an Old Fashioned or some delicious spiked punch? Have a seat. Do your beer tastes run the gamut between old-school High Life ponies and smallbatch local IPAs? You’re in the right place. Located in one of Nashville’s hottest areas, Wedgewood-Houston, and attached to one of the best spots to eat in town (chef Josh Habiger does wonders in Bastion’s restaurant side), the Big Bar at Bastion should be full of pretentious, preening patrons and unbearably hip drinks, but it’s not. You have to love a place whose one meal offering is a nacho plate that’s better than any other nachos in a 100-mile radius. A great bar attracts all manner of people: transients having a drink on their way to food; stool-dwellers set up for the night; friends gathered to shoot the shit and maybe play a game; couples locked in deep conversation. At Bastion, they’ve all got a place to call their own. STEVE CAVENDISH

While I am loathe to use the word “unicorn” in an era when every girl on Instagram thinks she is one, it is the first phrase that popped into my head when thinking about this year’s best new restaurant. In its freshman year, The Green Pheasant cleared so many hurdles. They’re located downtown, but in a way that somehow seems designed for locals — tucked away on First Avenue, safely out of stumbling distance for Broadway bros but close enough you can easily drop in on your way to the Ryman. Secondly, their food is clean, seasonal, inventive and insanely delicious. Japanese food in Nashville tends to skew one of two ways: light and raw (sushi, poke) or heavy and decadent (ramen, deep-fried something-or-other). The Green Pheasant offers both with nuance and ingenuity that are hard to find, especially in a place that serves food for 11 hours straight most days. You’ve got the greatest hits from sister restaurant Two Ten Jack — creamy tonkatsu ramen, buttery chili-crab noodles — alongside stellar newcomers like grilled Hawaiian moonfish and chirashi, raw fish on rice accented by puckery pickled vegetables and caviar. You’ve got chickenwing gyoza with sweet chile sauce alongside tamago: basically a zesty, Japanese deviledegg sandwich on fluffy white bread. Should you need it, you’ve also got friggin’ wagyu

One of the best ways to measure the esteem of a local chef is by how many visiting chefs and foodies make their way to his or her establishments. There’s no doubt that Philip Krajeck and his restaurants Rolf and Daughters and Folk — the latter our choice for this year’s Best Restaurant — make their way to the very top of many visitors’ eat-ineraries. In a dining town filled with elevated Southern farm-to-table eateries, boutique taquerias, notable barbecue joints and various twee culinary fusion concepts, Krajeck stands above the crowd as a chef who concentrates on moving the food scene of the city, and the world, forward. At Rolf and Daughters, he could have stood pat on his initial success based just on the addictive garganelli verde with heritage pork ragout that patrons will not

let him remove from the menu. While the chef accedes to his customers’ demands with that particular dish, he continues to be innovative with the rest of his menu. Experimenting with fermentation in deliciously complex ways, Krajeck has introduced new flavors into rustic European cuisine that are novel and unique. Folk opened to great expectations and immediate acclaim, thanks to more pushing of the envelope. Why is that clam pizza so delicious and addictive? Because Krajeck adds an extra shot of umami with fermented bonito flakes. Other chefs do a great job of featuring Middle Tennessee’s bounty of produce, but Krajeck truly elevates those ingredients at Folk through clever preparations and techniques. On a pizza or served alongside proteins cooked in a wood-fired oven, vegetables become the paint on Krajeck’s colorful culinary palette. Not that we really mind it when an outof-town team launches a great spot, but it’s especially gratifying to see a project in which a talented longtime Nashville chef finally gets to open his own restaurant. John Stephenson has been cooking around Nashville since 1991; his longest stint was at Fido, where he ran the kitchen for 12 years. His work there earned him a lot of respect in the dining scene, especially for his daily specials, which explored the bounty of seasonal local ingredients. In December 2018, Stephenson at last opened his own place as a chef and restaurateur, and it’s a winner. Hathorne fills the former fellowship hall of a Methodist church that used to operate on Charlotte Avenue in Sylvan Park. Stephenson’s team transformed it into a comfortable and stylish dining room while keeping the warmth of a much-used church hall. The restaurant’s name is a tribute to Stephenson’s grandmother, Mary Ruth Hathorn — he took poetic license and added Hathorne’s “e.” Presiding over the bar is an adorable blackand-white photo of young Miss Mary Ruth Hathorn, circa 1929, with her intelligent gaze and bobbed hair. Everything adds up to a relaxed spot that nods to the past while being exquisitely convivial in the present. And the food, created by chef-owner Stephenson and executive chef Joey Molteni, doesn’t disappoint. Not surprisingly, given Stephenson’s previous achievements with seasonal produce at Fido, the vegetables are especially well-executed, but the meat dishes are also exceptional. Hathorne’s slate of cocktails and wine is also well-chosen, and the happy hour is called the Joyful Hour (in a nod to the former fellowship of the church space). Whether you go for drinks or appetizers — or even better, a wonderfully crafted dinner — Hathorne is a delightful place to spend some time. DANA KOPP FRANKLIN

Jake Howell of Peninsula

Peninsula, which launched in 2017, immediately established itself as a creative Iberian-influenced restaurant that is uncommonly good. Credit goes to a trio of restaurateurs originally from Seattle — the

husband-and-wife team of Craig Schoen and Yuriko Say and chef-partner Jake Howell. And since the opening, the skills of Chef Howell have proven impressive. The East Nashville space that houses Peninsula has an incredibly tiny kitchen, and Howell and his sous chef perform what seems like a miraculous feat as they craft the excellent cuisine in such cramped quarters. “The duo must know every step of preparation — including how to stay out of each other’s way and keep service flowing seamlessly as diners order multiple dishes to create their own culinary adventure,” the Scene’s Chris Chamberlain wrote about Peninsula’s kitchen earlier this year in a feature story on back-of-the-house restaurant magic. Then in March, Howell formally proved his mettle by capturing the Iron Fork trophy, winning the annual Scene-sponsored event where chefs compete to cook up the best dish to please a panel of judges. Each year, the Iron Fork chefs use their skills under intense time pressure, doing their best to incorporate a secret ingredient that’s announced just before the clock starts ticking. This year’s judges were mightily impressed by Howell’s performance, which only confirmed what we already knew about his phenomenal culinary grace under pressure. DANA KOPP FRANKLIN

The folks at Gabby’s in Wedgewood-Houston are more interested in giving you the best burger for the best price, dining ambiance be damned! They don’t even care to stay open after 2:30 p.m. (except on Fridays, when they’re open “late” until 7:30), so hit them up for lunch. Their focus is on delicious burgers made from grass-fed beef smashed on a greasy flat-top griddle — the way God intended. If you know the password to their secret menu, you’ll find all sorts of exotic options, but the power move is a simple Gabby Burger, which comes with two perfectly seasoned, juicy patties smothered in gooey American cheese. Prin ce’s Hot Chicken Sh ack 2.0

Wow, this is a tough one. Prince’s is definitely still the OG hot chicken joint, but its legions of fans were crushed by the closing of the North Nashville location after an unfortunate fire when a car crashed into part of the strip mall that housed the restaurant. (Regardless of the fact that there have been several other iterations of the chicken shack in other neighborhoods over the decades.) Consider this like the CMA’s old Horizon Award, where a country act that wasn’t necessarily new was recognized for significant career advancement. Through the years, the only thing holding

Prince’s back seemed to be the team’s own unwillingness to expand from their small home, but any limitations are now officially gone. Their larger South Nashville outpost has overcome initial consistency hiccups to adequately balance quality with quantity. Now they can serve more hot chicken lovers in a much larger venue. Other developments include a permanent Prince’s food truck at the sprawling 6th & Peabody complex downtown and planned expansions to the airport and the upcoming Fifth + Broad food hall downtown. They’ve also announced that they are seeking to reopen another shack in their former neighborhood of North Nashville. More Prince’s is always a good thing! CHRIS CHAMBERLAIN

And the meticulously curated space makes it clear that the crew used its time wisely. There are beautiful booths, wall fixtures in the shape of robotic faces, and an enormous golden robot (built by McCloud) hovering over the massive, three-sided wraparound bar. The best bit? The authentic tiki drinks, from the Robo Zombie to the Jet Pilot and beyond (some of which are served in McCloud-designed tiki glasses you can buy), make the place a destination bar. D. Operating a bar doesn’t have to be that complicated. Leah Spivey-McCormick has figured that out at SandBar Nashville, her seasonal beach bar in ONEC1TY. Operating with a lean staff and stripped-down menu, she simply gives the people what they want: tropical drinks made with fresh juices served in hollowed-out coconuts, pineapples or watermelons, cold beers, an open, dogfriendly patio and sand courts to play league or pickup volleyball. The results of her efforts are a packed bar whenever she’s open from spring through fall. There, was that so difficult?! CHRIS CHAMBERLAIN

The Bla ck Abbey Brewing C ompany

To some people, opening a brewery in a nondescript industrial strip of Sidco Drive behind 100 Oaks would seem like a disadvantage to a small business looking to attract patrons. To Carl Meier and his crew at Black Abbey Brewing Co., it’s just a great place to throw a party without anybody calling the neighbors, so that’s what they do on the regular. There’s always something hopping at Black Abbey, from their joyous Beer and Hymns sing-alongs to the ultra-popular Eight More Beers of Winter, where they tap some of the best beers they’ve been holding back all year. Regular events also include their popular Yacht Rock extravaganzas and Vinyl Nights, when employees spin their favorite records. CHRIS CHAMBERLAIN

Do you like to eat but hate to park? Nashville’s public transit system WeGo has come up with some novel ideas to encourage ridership by offering guides to eating out in Nashville. It only costs $4 for an all-day bus pass, so you don’t have to worry about transfers or buying a return ticket. Start at the Music City Central hub downtown, where you can find lists of culinary destinations arranged thematically — think hot chicken spots or breweries — as well as the lines that connect them to downtown. Or you can take their advice on where to eat along particular routes like the No. 52 Nolensville Pike or No. 26 Gallatin line. Feed yourself and help save the planet at the same time. “Big Daddy” Sean Porter spent years touring as a road manager with national acts like Cage the Elephant and Elle King. If he learned anything in that gig, it was the value of finding some good late-night eats. So when it was time to come off the road, he decided to open a gourmet hot dog cart to serve the needs of the munchie zombies out after midnight. Partnering with high school friend Andrew St. Marie, Porter has now expanded Daddy’s Dogs to a fleet of three carts serving high-traffic areas of downtown and Midtown as well as brickand-mortar shops in Printers Alley and The Nations. While a properly made cocktail served in a classy establishment is a thing of beauty, there are definitely valid reasons to make your own drinks at home instead — primarily cost and the fact that nobody ever got a DUI sitting on their own couch. City Winery and Liquor Lab, the new “edutainment” venue on Second Avenue North, both offer classes to teach budding bartenders the techniques behind shaking and stirring up classic cocktails and the stories behind the spirits that somehow make them taste even better. City Winery’s classes are on a sporadic schedule, but Liquor Lab offers classes all through the week, every week. Cheers! CHRIS CHAMBERLAIN

Conventional wisdom is that Nashville is not overflowing with female culinary talent, since they don’t seem to show up on as many of those “best chef” lists or on cable cooking shows like they do in other towns. Well, the conventional wisdom is crap, because a quick gander at the membership roster of the local chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier — a global organization that recognizes professional women involved in the food, fine beverage and hospitality industries — reveals an abundance of talented ladies living in Nashville. In fact, the national Les Dames d’Escoffier organization chose Nashville as the host city for their annual conference in 2019, so at least they apparently know what’s up. CHRIS CHAMBERLAIN

In honor of Mental Health Month in May, Scene contributor and expert on all things sweet Megan Seling decided to organize a local version of a London-based fundraiser called the Depressed Cake Shop. The popup — which took place at East Nashville’s Anaconda Vintage — featured all sorts of baked goods and desserts that are decorated in colors of gray, black or silver. But just because something looks drab on the exterior doesn’t mean it can’t be fabulous inside. Seling organized an amazing array of local pastry talent to participate in the one-day event, including James Beard nominee Lisa Marie White of Marsh House and Rebekah Turshen of City House, and all the treats sold out in no time, raising more than $1,200 for the National Alliance on Mental Illness Tennessee! There are good ways to close a restaurant, and there are bad ways to do it. The owners of SoBro favorite Flyte got it “ryte” when they announced, with a month’s notice, that they were taking the opportunity to buy their way out of their lease before mounting rents forced them to make drastic steps to keep up with costs. This allowed them to celebrate almost 15 years as a local cradle of chefs instead of bemoaning the shuttering. In a final bout of lovely kismet, Red Pebbles Hospitality (the team behind the 404 Kitchen, Emmy Squared and other Nashville restaurants) offered the entire Flyte staff new positions at their same or increased pay rates after the final service. We love it when a plan comes together! CHRIS CHAMBERLAIN

One of the sweetest signs of summer is Goo Goo’s annual Summer Chef Series, when the candy shop offers local chefs the opportunity to express themselves via a custom Premium Goo Goo. Each specialty candy cluster is crafted in the confectioner’s sweets shop downtown on Third Avenue South and sold in the shop for a few weeks before giving way to the next chef’s creation. Finally, attendees to the Music City Food + Wine Festival get to vote on their favorite creation, and the people’s-choice winner goes back on sale at the shop after the event. How do you make the perfect breakfast sandwich? I’ll tell you. You start with an expertly toasted house-made bun, top it with exquisitely fluffy scrambled eggs — loads of ’em — add a fresh slice of tomato or two, some arugula and a small amount of good mayo (but not too much, as you don’t want squirtage). Then you slather it with the sinfully delicious sweet-and-salty combo of bacon jam to add a depth of flavor otherwise unheard of in a simple breakfast sandwich. Every February, chefs from some of Nashville’s best restaurants and catering services gather on a late-winter Sunday to share their comforting creations while also benefiting the efforts of Our Kids, the crucial organization that aims to support children and families struggling with child sexual abuse. A ticket to the event includes all-you-caneat access to more than 40 different kinds of soup. This year’s menu included classics like crab bisque, Brunswick stew and minestrone as well as more innovative recipes like Sambuca’s cream-based dill pickle soup and The Quarter’s dessert soup inspired by Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (it was so freakin’ good). It seems counterintuitive to honor such a meaty enterprise with a poultry award, but Bare Bones chicken salad will not be denied. Bare Bones smokes the chicken in house, and while it’s a showstopper on its own, it hits new heights when combined with crunchy celery and creamy vinaigrette. The zingy mix of Dijon, lemon juice and Duke’s Mayonnaise (duh) sets off the smoky, savory chicken perfectly. If you see it, stock up — they sell out every time. ASHLEY BRANTLEY

For years, 51st Deli did solid business as Savemore Supermarket, but when they saw New Nashville coming, they pivoted in a manner Ross Geller would envy. Grocery shelves gave way to coolers of craft beer, kombucha, parfaits, fresh mango and Bongo Java coffee. The take-and-bake chicken pot pies feature a special blend of spices from Guszkowski’s fiancé and business partner Chris Gonzales’ seasoning company Beard & Bark, and this summer they introduced cool and creamy ice box pies in flavors like key lime, strawberry pretzel and a cereal milk with Fruity Pebbles crust inspired by the work of Milk Bar’s Christina Tosi. But Caity Pies’ body-loving message is the real treat. While selling pies at local farmers markets, Guszkowski noticed a lot of women expressing guilt or shame over the idea of treating themselves to dessert, so she now displays a sandwich board with a few rules, including “NO DIET TALK.” When you buy a Caity Pie, you are allowing yourself a moment of unapologetic, guilt-free satisfaction, shamelessly and without excuses, for no reason other than it tastes damn good. Best Maker of Over- theTop Baked Goods

L isa Marie W hite

Nashville got infinitely more delicious when Lisa Marie White moved from New Orleans to Music City to take over all things sweet for the Thompson Hotel in the Gulch. She baked up chocolate-covered croissants and thick slices of coffee cake for Killebrew, built decadent ice cream sandwiches for rooftop bar L.A. Jackson, and created innovative plated desserts — think cereal-milk panna cotta and blueberry pie topped with torched meringue — for seafood restaurant Marsh House. But this year she went even more deliciously wild, filling Killebrew’s shelves with grab-and-go sweets like giant marshmallow creme-stuffed oatmeal cookies, gorgeous chocolate bark decorated with candy, cereal and edible glitter, and jars of caramel corn laced with hunks of chocolatecovered pretzels, candied pecans, puffs of cotton candy and more. Nothing is off limits

Best East S ide C heap Eats

Five Points Taco

This delightful taco truck has taken up permanent residence in the parking lot of the Marathon gas station at 11th and Woodland streets in East Nashville, and it’s one of the neighborhood’s most reliable options for a great, quick, affordable meal. Highlights at Five Points Taco: Both the carnitas and shrimp tacos, the carne asada fries, and one of my fave items in town, the mulitas (I get the carnitas version), which are essentially mini quesadillas. And let’s not forget the fabulous $5 cheesy beanand-rice burrito, a satisfying meal for anyone on a budget. Furthermore, owner Charlie Zelaya is one of the nicest folks you’ll find in Nashville’s food biz. JACK SILVERMAN

Best Dinner Entert ainment

Plaza Maria chi

With a large number of eateries (including Mexican, Cuban, Greek and more), a new dedicated bar, and constant entertainment from the stage and beyond, Plaza Mariachi’s food court is a great place for those large gatherings where no one can decide where to go. On various nights, bands play, you can salsa dance, play trivia, watch aerial artists and dancers and more. It’s kid-friendly (unless otherwise noted on some late-night entertainment), and there’s even an arcade. Grab a paleta and a spot near the stage for a fun and multicultural evening. ELIZABETH JONES

Best Bubble Tea

R oyal Bo ba

Traditional bubble tea is usually made with shelf-stable powders — powdered cream, powdered flavorings. But at Royal Boba, drinks are made with your choice of fresh whole, soy or almond milk, whole fruit and loose-leaf teas. The sweetness level is adjustable on a scale of 0 to 3, and the shop also offers an assortment of toppings. Are the oversized black tapioca pearls not your jam? Try basil seeds — tiny black seeds that form a gelatinous coating in liquid — or assorted fruit jelly, brightly colored cubes that taste like those syrupy fruit-cocktail cups from grade-school lunch. The seasonal offerings are always on-point, too — from matchaflavored shaved ice to boba-loaded piña colada smoothies made with fresh pineapple. MEGAN SELING

Liz Pape’s design company Elizabeth Suzann makes clothing that’s decidedly elegant but also versatile. Nothing is made overseas, and Pape is transparent about how much it actually costs to source eco-friendly materials, pay workers a living wage, and grow a sustainable business. Her pieces, which you can buy online, are timeless instead of seasonal, so they’ll outlast your less expensive fast-fashion finds. Plus, the entire line goes up to size 26. Kim’s Al ter Ations & r ewe Aving

I respect a woman who doesn’t have time to mess around, and Kim of Kim’s Alterations & Reweaving is just that kind of lady. Her cash-only shop on White Bridge offers fast turnarounds, low prices and sound work. She can alter anything from bras and bridesmaids dresses to jeans and swimsuits, which is a tricky enterprise. Plus, anyone who goes by just one name — it’s just Kim, à la Cher, Prince and Madonna — is an icon. ASHLEY BRANTLEY

that get noticed. Her signature mugs are engraved and painted with broad, smiling mouths that sport gold teeth, but her paintsplattered tumblers are just as chic. Salt Ceramics is housed within the enclave of the talented artsy weirdos of Elephant Gallery, and you can buy the goods at Firepot Tea Bar and Rolf and Daughters, or you can order them online. Perhaps you were gifted some of Grandma’s jewelry that just isn’t your cup of tea, but you feel bad leaving it all alone in your jewelry box. Lindsay Chapman at Giador Fine Jewelry offers custom jewelry design services that are surprisingly affordable (seriously), promising to breathe new life into those old rocks. You can trust Chapman to shoot straight with you, and to offer her expert eye on how you can transform those family heirlooms into something that’s more your style. She also curates the most droolworthy estate collection — she has some platinum Art Deco rings that I’d sell my car for — if you’re in the market for a dreamy one-of-a-kind piece. Make an appointment at her cute Berry Hill studio and indulge in all your Champagne wishes and caviar dreams. ABBY WHITE

Best Hand- painted s igns More than just a lyric from the second-best Ace of Base song, I Saw The Sign is also the name of a local sign-painting company owned and operated by Meghan Wood and Stinky Barnes. Together they fancy up local bars, restaurants and shops with expertly executed hand-painted lettering and designs. The groovy Instagrammable murals in the new Dive Motel? I Saw The Sign did those. That giant hand-gilded gold map in Char? Yup, also their work. They’ve painted for Mas Tacos, Retrograde Coffee, Elephant Gallery, The Green Pheasant, Noelle and more. And this year was their biggest yet — literally. They hand-painted a two-sided 16-by-32-foot billboard for Honest Abe Log Homes, which you can see on I-40. MEGAN SELING

she saw and heard regarding Nashville — so she decided to do something about it. Patterson founded United Street Tours in February 2018, determined to inform visitors — and unaware locals — about Nashville’s impressive and extensive black history and culture. Patterson’s efforts have since been chronicled by NPR, and United Street Tours has evolved into a multi-tiered entity offering three different walking tours, each 90 minutes long. There’s a black history option, as well as tours devoted to the civil rights movement and neighborhood diversity. RON WYNN

The Bookshop

Remember 2011? It was a dark time for

Nashville readers, who were left without an independent bookshop for the seemingly endless months between when Davis-Kidd closed in late 2010 and Parnassus Books set up shop toward the end of the following year. Fast-forward to 2019, and not only is Parnassus bigger and better than ever, but now there’s also an indie bookstore on Nashville’s East Side. Joelle Herr’s literary oasis

The Bookshop is small, but the selection is sublime, with bestsellers sharing shelves with the offerings from cutting-edge indie presses. The Bookshop also plays host to bookish events galore, often in conjunction with local writers’ collective The Porch or the neighboring Kettner Coffee Supply. Parents will love taking their baby bookworms to Saturday story time, while events for older readers — which include wine — make The Bookshop an indispensable hub for

Nashville’s ever-expanding literary community. BRITTNEY McKENNA

And that’s not to mention its work hosting events, like the Jefferson Street Art Crawl, which has brought outstanding authors and artists
