There’s no place like home Another month has come and gone, and we’re still at home. The city is slowly reopening, and I know many people are eager to return to a sense of normalcy, but I suspect we’ll all continue to spend a lot more time in our homes for the rest of this year than we ever anticipated. And since we’re spending so much of our lives indoors, what better time for our annual Homes of Distinction issue? As always, we’re taking you inside some of the city’s most breathtaking, jaw-dropping and spectacular houses. And the great news is that they’re all for sale. So, if the quarantine has made you grow weary of your current digs, maybe you’ll find a new one to love. Check out the nine stunning properties beginning on page 38. We’ve also been visiting with

a lot of you at your houses in our At Home With Nfocus feature (page 19). Find out how some of our readers — like the adorable Pilkinton family on our cover — are passing the time as they shelter in place. As you probably know, Jane Anne was supposed to cochair the now-canceled Swan Ball this month. She and her lovely cochair Anne Maradik would’ve been on our July cover as a result, so we were thrilled that we could still make her a cover girl this month. If you’re looking for ways to pass the time, check out our Quarantine Watch List (page 66). Our friends at the Belcourt Theatre gave us some fabulous film recommendations that you can view at home. Take care of yourselves. We hope to see you out and about soon! BY NANCY FLOYD

BEHIND THE SCENES
The Basics Name: Rick Schwartz Profession/Title: President and CEO, Nashville Zoo Hometown: Raleigh, North Carolina Zip Code: 37075 Years in Nashville: 31 Number of clouded leopard cubs born to the Nashville Zoo: 53
facility in North America that breeds this vulnerable species, so these births are significant.
Wild Kingdom
Nashville Zoo’s Rick Schwartz’s craziest animal encounter, favorite exhibit and more Rick Schwartz’s fascination with animals extends back as far as he can remember. He fell in love with animals as an infant, started collecting snakes at the age of 7 and got his first job — at a pet shop, naturally — at 12. When he moved to Nashville in 1989 to manage the Nashville Zoo, he had a personal collection of 176 wild creatures that included lions, tigers, monkeys, leopards and pythons. Since 1989, Rick has built and established the zoo as Nashville’s top paid attraction, attracting more than 1.2 million visitors last year. He’s elevated the zoo’s profile through world-class exhibits and internationally recognized conservation efforts. In addition to his work breeding clouded leopards at the Nashville Zoo, where 53 cubs have been born, Rick is the co-founder of the Clouded Leopard Consortium in Thailand. He also serves on the boards of GRACE (Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education) and the IRF (International Rhino Foundation) and on the steering committee of the Tapir TAG (Taxon Advisory Group). In recent years, under Rick’s leadership, the Nashville Zoo unveiled a new Andean bear exhibit (which won Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Exhibit Award in 2019), a Sumatran tiger exhibit (currently nominated for the Exhibit Award), an entry village and a veterinary hospital. The biggest exhibit — a 40acre immersive African safari experience — is yet to come and is the project Rick is most excited about. We caught up with the zookeeper about his career, his love of animals and what’s next for the Nashville Zoo. BY NANCY FLOYD PHOTOGRAPH BY DANIEL MEIGS
What’s your favorite Nashville Zoo exhibit? That is a really difficult question to answer. I am extremely proud of our new entrance and veterinary hospital, both of which won top honors from the Associated Builders and Contractors in Tennessee. Winning Exhibit of the Year in 2019 from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums for our Andean bear exhibit was one of the highlights of my career. The zoo’s new Sumatran tiger exhibit is perhaps the most detailed exhibit we have ever produced and is also nominated for Exhibit of the Year this year. I am equally proud of our Unseen New World exhibit, which was the very first animal exhibit we built at the Grassmere location in 1998. So these are my top five projects, but my favorite exhibit is yet to come, which will be a 40-acre African immersion experience. What animal/species do you wish the Nashville Zoo had? My short list is down to around 150, but my ultimate dream is to build one of the finest gorilla exhibits in the world. What was your scariest or craziest animal encounter? I was bitten and “temporarily contained” by an 18-foot python the week my daughter was born, which was not one of my better days.
What was your first pet? I started collecting snakes when I was 7 and had a collection of 40 by the time I was 10. My first mammal was a coatimundi — a South American relative of the raccoon — which I got when I was 12. What’s one animal you’d like to see in the wild that you’ve never seen before? Anyone who knows me is aware my favorite animals in the world are clouded leopards. I have been to the forests of Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Borneo and Thailand looking for a glimpse of this elusive cat without any success other than tracks. Seeing a clouded leopard in the wild would be one of the highlights of my life. What’s the one thing you hope never changes in Nashville? The generosity of Nashvillians. I remain amazed and humbled by what I see as one of the most generous and philanthropic communities I could ever imagine. The zoo has received tremendous support from the private sector, as have so many worthwhile nonprofits in Middle Tennessee. I am perhaps most impressed with how our community never fails to come together in times of crisis, such as the devastating flood in 2010, the recent tornadoes and now the COVID virus. I am proud to live in this great city and always intend to call it home.
What was the most recent birth at the Nashville Zoo? We had a litter of Palawan binturongs, also known as bear cats. Nashville Zoo is the only >>

At Home With Nfocus In the absence of any events this spring, we miss seeing your smiling faces in the pages of our magazine. And since there are no parties for our photographers to attend, we thought we’d bring our photographers to you. We asked a few of our readers to show us how they’re sheltering in place — what they’re cooking (or ordering in), what they’re reading and what they can’t wait to do when life returns to normal. Keep reading to find out how some of our friends are spending their newfound time at home and who they’re sharing it with. PHOTOGRAPHS BY ERIC ENGLAND
What are you doing to stay connected? As far as work goes, we have the opportunity to connect with people by phone and Zoom meetings and safely orchestrated home showings for Denise. Personally, we have enjoyed chatting from our front lawn with neighbors when they are out walking in the neighborhood. Have you tackled any projects that were lingering on your to-do list? We purged and organized things in the house when we moved in about a year ago, so no lingering home projects, thank goodness. Jeff has been putting extra time into a new tech business startup, and Denise is knocking out some continuing education and a new website project. What have you been reading and/ or watching? We have never been big TV watchers but watched all of Ozark after hearing about it from so many friends. Denise recently finished The Tattooist of Auschwitz and The Silent Patient audiobooks while on her long walks every day. When the Safer at Home order lifts, what’s the first thing you’ll do? Pre-COVID, we would go someplace every month for a few days, so it’s easy to say that we are both eager to travel and will look forward to a change of scenery! When the Safer at Home order lifts, what’s the first restaurant you’ll visit? Giovanni’s Midtown is our go-to place that feels like home. We really miss Gio, Chris and the staff and the amazing beef carpaccio and risotto! What spring fundraising event are you missing most? Denise was co-chair for the T.J. Martell Best Cellars Dinner in Napa that was to happen in May. We will miss spending time with our Napa friends and the funds that it would have brought in for cancer research.

AT HOME WITH NFOCUS What meal have you made most often? I’ve tried to be creative with my cooking and was cooking quite a bit during the earlier weeks of isolation, but lately, we’re ordering in more from local restaurants. I feel that it’s our duty to support them! Have you tackled any projects that were lingering on your to-do list? One would think I’d be getting a lot more done than I have but one positive effect
the quarantining has had on me is that I’ve been able to screen many movies for the Nashville Jewish Film Festival, which will take place (hopefully) this October. It is our 20th year (hard to believe). Have you picked up a new hobby or reignited an old interest? Not yet! I think my new hobby will be welcoming our second grandchild, who is due in mid-May, and help-
ing my daughter and her husband get settled in their new home. Would also love to be able to travel to North Carolina in June to celebrate our grandson’s first birthday but it’s too early to make any definitive plans. I guess being a grandmother is my newest hobby! What spring fundraising event are you missing most? The Nashville Zoo’s Call of the Wild dinner which was supposed
to take place in midApril. I missed being with my animal-loving friends in a beautiful outdoor setting at the zoo and helping our zoo. Hopefully, we’ll be able to enjoy this event in September. And, although it’s not a fundraiser, I was so disappointed and sad not to be able to see the Nashville Ballet’s Modern Masters and Emergence performances. I’m so looking forward to the return of Nashville Ballet.

Home has never been more important. Home is where you are. It’s where we are too. It’s the keeper of your moments and milestones. It’s the constant in all this change. It’s why we do what we do. And why we’re committed to helping everyone find their home whenever they’re looking.

Sharon and Todd Sandahl With William, Charles and Frances
What meal have you made most often? Steak, baked potatoes and broccoli seem to be our comfort foods. We are starting the day with a big breakfast. A chocolate-chocolate-chip Bundt cake and blueberry pound cake are our go-to breakfast items, along with strawberries and smoothies. We are eating lots of eggs and bacon. What is the view like from your work-from-home space? The best view is anywhere there is a good internet signal and an open comfortable chair. The back porch is a favorite spot. The birds and blooming
flowers are beautiful. The front office has a view of the street, and it is nice to watch people walking their dogs.
cooking together, but we are more than ready to be inspired by our favorite restaurants and take a break from cooking.
When the Safer at Home order lifts, what’s the first thing you’ll do? As a family, we want to go bowling at Donelson Bowl. Haircuts and manicure/pedicures are also at the top of the list. We miss our friends and getting together with them.
What spring fundraising event are you missing most? Swan Ball is our favorite, and we are sad to miss it this year. The chairmen make each year unique and special. The best part of the night is entering the tent and seeing the décor and transformation. Every year is inspiring and unique. All the senses are fulfilled in one night. From beverage and food to the flowers and tables to music and dancing, it is a fabulous night.
When the Safer at Home order lifts, what’s the first restaurant you’ll visit? Morton’s, Sperry’s, lunch at Bricktop’s, the list is long. We love eating at home and

What are you doing to stay connected? We all do a lot of Zoom and FaceTime. Jeff is at VUMC every day, so he is connected by his work. I enjoy social distanced walks with friends in Nashville’s gorgeous parks.
Melinda Balser With Maddie and Munster
What meal have you made most often? I’ve really embraced cooking during the pandemic and am trying new recipes, so no repeats yet. We are trying to eat healthy, so I’d have to say every meal involves some sort of roasted vegetable and fresh salad. Have you tackled any projects that were lingering on your to-do list? Absolutely. I organized the pantry and several closets. I still have a couple of daunting tasks ahead. Have you picked up a new hobby or reignited an old interest? Maddie, Jillian and I have been doing jigsaw puzzles and painting. What have you been reading and/or watching? We love watching The Good Place! Such a fun show and really interesting. We just started Ozark. It’s good. I listen to podcasts when I walk the dogs; Life Kit, Sugar Calling and Armchair Expert are a few I enjoy during this time. What is the view like from your work-fromhome space? I putter around the house all day! When the Safer at Home order lifts, what’s the first thing you’ll do? I would love to go to the beach! When the Safer at Home order lifts, what’s the first restaurant you’ll visit? Probably Miel or Answer. What spring fundraising event are you missing most? Jeff and I will really miss The Nashville Food Project’s Nourish this year. It is always an incredible evening with delicious food and wonderful company. The event raises money for the work TNFP does in Nashville addressing poverty and injustice by alleviating hunger and building community.

AT HOME WITH NFOCUS What are you doing to stay connected? Family dinners and walks. We also had our oldest teach us five-card poker and have had two game nights. Turns out I am a terrible bluffer. What meal have you made most often? Coffee and reheating amazing delivered meals from Kristen Winston Catering, The Party Line and Tin Wings. Have you tackled any projects that were lingering on your to-do list? Lots of small home projects; finally climbed up on a ladder and cleaned a few of
our light fixtures and replaced burned out bulbs (now, it’s obvious why a few of our rooms seemed darker). What have you been reading and/or watching? Audiobooking The Dutch House (it is wonderful) and catching up on sooooo much TV: Ozark, Homeland, Killing Eve. Gosh, all those shows are a bit dark. Please don’t judge. When the Safer at Home order lifts, what’s the first restaurant you’ll visit? I miss eating out but am so grateful for excellent
take-away options. I truly hope everyone keeps their easy takeaway menus for a while. What spring fundraising event are you missing most? Swan Ball and Swan Ball Auction. It was an honor to be an auction co-chair this year with Grace Awh and Elizabeth Papel. The ball chairs, Anne Maradik and Jane Anne Pilkinton, are amazing, and I know the evening would have been incredible. It was the right decision to cancel both, but I miss the opportunity to take on this beautiful event and raise funds for Cheekwood.

Allen DeCuyper and Steve Sirls With Leo and Harper Lee
What are you doing to stay connected? Staying connected is easy for us, because the neighborhood that we live in is so walkable and friendly that we have sidewalk visitors on a regular basis. Some even walk through the garden to relax and check out what is currently blooming or ready to harvest from the vegetable garden. Our dogs actually invite everyone
in. They love the attention from someone different. What is the view like from your work-fromhome space? The view changes daily depending on the location that you choose to Zoom from. No fake backgrounds for us. Harper Lee and Leo usually prop themselves up in the picture. They have been the happiest during this isolation experience.
When the Safer at Home order lifts, what’s the first thing you’ll do? Go to Barcelona. When the Safer at Home order lifts, what’s the first restaurant you’ll visit? J. Alexander’s for Steve and Miss Saigon for Allen. Did not mean to leave out Sperry’s or Margot Cafe. Can’t wait for all. I have to give a big
high-five to Dani Kates and Johnny Haffner for rising to the occasion with many deliveries and pick-ups for many, many folks. They are the champions. I need to include all of the other vendors for changing their formats to help us all out and keep people working. What spring fundraising event are you miss-
ing most? Being people that love to have a plan to see friends and support causes that make our city a valuable place to live, work and be counted, I must say not one stands out. They are all important. Keeping our nonprofits alive right now is a great challenge. We need to be generous to all as we repair and rise above this difficult turn of events.

What are you doing to stay connected? The silver lining of quarantine has been family walks around the neighborhood that have reconnected us with our neighbors, who we rarely get to see. What meal have you made most often? Whatever is featured in Kristen Winston’s Pantry for the week, including lots of chicken salad, chocolate chip cookies and bacon for the boys! What have you been reading and/or watching? We have been watching Madam Secretary as a family on Netflix. We also have loved staying connected and streaming our church services. The children have been doing a lot of studying. Dale has read Virgil Wander, The Pioneers and everything there is to know about the coronavirus. My favorite is anything by Paul David Tripp. What is the view like from your work-fromhome space? The children doing homework together at the kitchen table: a mother’s dream to have them home for homeschool, especially when not doing the teaching! When the Safer at Home order lifts, what’s the first thing you’ll do? Ophelia and Oliver will be excited to go swim again, Sophie will be excited to go to Parnassus or a bakery and all of us will be glad to hug our grandparents! When the Safer at Home order lifts, what’s the first restaurant you’ll visit? Dale and I say family Sunday brunch at Belle Meade. Oliver says BrickTop’s. Ophelia says Taqueria del Sol. Sophie says True Food Kitchen. What spring fundraising event are you missing most? There are so many spring events that we love in Nashville, but of course, this year, we are dearly missing Swan Ball, as I would have adored my family being able to attend with me.

What are you doing to stay connected? Facebook, Instagram, texting, phone calls, emails, waving from my window. What meal have you made most often? Simply baked trout with orange and fennel salad. The big question: red or white? Have you tackled any projects that were lingering on your to-do list? No, I am old school: Get it done, return all calls and clear off the desk by the end of the day. Have you picked up a new hobby or reignited an old interest? Yes, creating vignettes for my meals and posting them. “Table by the Window” and “Cafe des Artistes” are crowd favorites. What have you been reading and/or watching? Chickering Road and its People by Ridley Wills II is dear to my heart. Belgravia, the new Downton Abbey, has me hooked. What is the view like from your work-from-home space? Fire Station 17 is the view, with my manly men keeping me entertained as they answer calls and work in the kitchen. My binoculars are always nearby. When the Safer at Home order lifts, what’s the first thing you’ll do? Entertain my friends who have been sorely missed. The bar will be open, and my cooking has improved during the quarantine. When the Safer at Home order lifts, what’s the first restaurant you’ll visit? Restoration Hardware Cafe, as the team leader and staff have contacted me to check on me, which means more than I can say. What spring fundraising event are you missing most? The Tennessee Waltz. Neil and I chaired in 1999. Very flattered to be asked to be named on the 2020 Waltz Committee in honor of the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage. Not that I was a suffragette, you understand, but I would have been.

Emily and Mark Humphreys
What are you doing to stay connected? Mark is running his businesses from the house. There are a lot of video and conference calls, which he takes while walking from room to room, then the patio and backyard to front yard. I have not stayed virtually connected very well, although I have enjoyed a couple of happy hours with arts organizations. What meal have you made most often? I’ve made a lot of spaghetti carbonara, which is one of Mark’s favorites, and French toast, which was new for me. It’s been nice seeing what everyone is cooking. Have you tackled any projects that were lingering on your to-do list? My husband surprised me late last year with the purchase of an 1867 Greek Revival home we now call Old Oaks near my family’s farm in Adams, Tennessee. It’s been great timing to manage a complete renovation of the home.
AtHome_June2020.indd 35
It took nearly six weeks just to get the walls and woodwork ready to paint, and we’re working on outbuildings and landscape, so it has been very hands-on and a blessing that Mark hasn’t been traveling back and forth to Dallas every week. When the Safer at Home order lifts, what’s the first thing you’ll do? Go to The Pointe on 30A What spring fundraising event are you missing most? It’s depressing to think about all of the organizations that have lost a huge source of funding through events that won’t be rescheduled, so instead of what I’m missing most, I’m looking forward to what’s coming up. We need the performing arts and the balls that fund outreach education programs. If anyone can figure out how to maneuver these times, it’s Sylvia Bradbury and Vicki Horne with next year’s Ballet Ball.

Bob Deal and Jason Bradshaw
What are you doing to stay connected? We are keeping our interior design business moving each day, depending on shipping and receiving variables. We are glued to our phones and Facebook to keep up with family and friends. What meal have you made most often? For lunches: soup and sandwiches are a norm, and
for dinners: meat sauce spaghetti with a side spinach salad. What have you been reading and/or watching? Bob reads a new book constantly, so keeping up with what title is a task in and of itself. Jason has caught up on the numerous design magazines and journals that we receive monthly. We are binge-watching Mad Men
on Netflix. We missed it in its initial release, so it has been interesting catching up. What is the view like from your work-fromhome space? It’s the same. Our studio location hasn’t changed. We call it the “Treehouse.” It has a beautiful treetop view with lots of natural light beaming in. Working from this space is a pure joy.
When the Safer at Home order lifts, what’s the first thing you’ll do? We probably will not be the first ones out of the gate. We will cautiously reenter Nashville and gain speed, but being the first ones out from quarantine may not be the best choice for us. We have super-close contact with our clients and want everyone involved to feel safe and at ease. The first
real order for both of us: BACK TO THE GYM!! When the Safer at Home order lifts, what’s the first restaurant you’ll visit? Bob says Green Hills Grille. Jason says Sonobana. Sperry’s is on the agenda, too. Any and all will be great. What spring fundraising event are you missing most? Swan Ball

Standing on a hilltop overlooking Radnor Lake, the house at 1855 Laurel Ridge Drive feels like a weekend retreat with a magnificent view. NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE The Old World-meets-farmhouse aura of this home is emphasized by the provenance of its bones. With much of the wood having been reclaimed from 150-year-old (or older) barns in the Leiper’s Fork area and coastal limestone imported from France, this home summons the past, but an elevator and a Lutron lighting, sound and video system beckon the future. Upon entry, the antique white oak floors, board and batten walls and French limestone fireplace demand your attention, but the direct path to the French doors draws you to the covered stone patio, which might as well be a designated scenic overlook with a breathtaking view of Radnor Lake and both a dining and lounging area. Perfectly designed for entertaining large and small groups, the kitchen contains a buffet-sized, wood-topped

island with deep-well sinks and a quartz countertop with Wolf cooking appliances. Surrounded by windows, the breakfast nook, with wraparound benches, seems to jut out into the trees, providing a marvelous view and all the morning sun you would like. The scullery just off of the kitchen houses the other necessary appliances, including a Sub-Zero refrigerator designed to hold 250 bottles. Another 200 bottles can be stored in the wine cellar. Venture upstairs to find the stunning master suite, as well as a music room, complete with a stage on the far end — perfect for intimate nights of rounds with friends or talented party guests. On this floor, you’ll also find the library with a gas fireplace and the office with Habersham bookshelves and a built-in desk. Finally, you can relax on the lower level in the media room with a wood-burning fireplace and a spa room with a full bath, sauna and a hot tub with a view. The perfect blend of natural materials and modern luxuries, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more welcoming house on top of a hill.

There’s something romantic about Leiper’s Fork, with its picturesque surroundings and charming village. It holds the promise of getting away from it all without really having to, thanks to its repuLEIPER’S FORK, TENNESSEE tation for good music, food and shopping. Now, there’s a chance to enjoy this sought-after lifestyle at 3511 White Crane Lane. With almost 20 acres of land, this peaceful Williamson County property will make the new owner feel like they’re sitting on top of the world. The Gothic Revival-style farmhouse sits at the highest point on the land and has magnificent views of neighboring farms, beautiful timberland and distant hills. The look may be vintage, but the open floor plan and modern conveniences are made for contemporary living. The great room’s whitewash pine floors, exposed oak beams and brick fireplace unite the living spaces with the kitchen, which has a tin ceiling, a large country sink, a custom island and retro-feel, high-end Big Chill appliances. Separated from the great room by a foyer, the master bedroom is a refuge with cathedral ceilings and a private

covered porch. The spa-like master bath offers double vanities, a large shower and a soaking tub with a window that opens to the pool. (Fun fact: The storm shelter — with 9-foot ceilings, air conditioning, appliances and fully stocked pantry — is accessed here.) The rest of the house has two bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs, a screened-in porch with a fireplace and guest quarters with a loft for a bird’s-eye view of the land. Only steps away, the backyard holds the heated saltwater pool with automatic cover, and in the other direction, an open fire pit is just beyond the three-car garage. This is the current owners’ second home, so they are offering it fully furnished, because much of the furniture was custom-made for the house, as were the light fixtures and other one-of-a-kind details. Pieces include the dining room table, which was designed for hosting large gatherings and serves as a center of activity during parties. There is hardly a nonprofit in the community that hasn’t been touched by Ellen Martin’s benevolence. For arts, social services and preservation organizations, she has generously provided fundNASHVILLE, TENNESSEE ing through the Martin Foundation, served as a board member, chaired fundraisers and opened her home for countless events. She’s also hosted major political candidates for mayor, senator and president and celebrated momentous occasions, big and small, with family and friends. Now, after almost 30 years, she’s decided to move from her Greek Revival residence at 610 Belle Meade Blvd. Built in 1925, the stately home — one of very few in this dignified style that remain in Belle Meade — has spectacular features, such as high ceilings, thick masonry walls, elaborate moldings and, as many know, sizable rooms for entertaining. The most striking feature of the grand entry hall has to be the 200-year-old hand-painted wallpaper, which the original owners found sitting in storage in England. The entry hall opens to the formal dining room and wood-paneled library, and beyond that are the kitchen and sunny breakfast room. On the opposite end of the entry

hall, the formal living room leads to the light-filled sunroom with its black-and-white marble floor. Quietly tucked away, the master suite completes the main floor. Accessed through a study, the spacious bedroom also has lots of windows and a covered porch that overlooks the circular rose garden. Upstairs, the second floor holds four more bedrooms and baths, and the third floor is already heated and cooled, making it a perfect location for a future playroom. The handsome carriage house, complete with a fireplace and kitchen, is next to the four-car garage. The landscaping on the nearly 6-acre estate is remarkable. An avid gardener, Ellen planted the nowmature boxwoods and established the gardens when she moved in. In addition to the rose garden, she put in an abundance of hydrangeas, including a walkway lined with them that leads to a gazebo and what she calls her “hidden garden,” a circle of 10-foot tall boxwoods surrounding a bench. Ellen has enjoyed sharing her home with so many, and the years of hospitality are now ingrained in its history. Let’s hope the next owners of this magnificent property continue to welcome the community into this treasure.

Like a party invitation that hints at a theme, the blue-gray front door to the newly built Baird Graham home, accented by reclaimed wood and flanked by iron lanterns, foretells its interior. NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE The 5,676-square-foot, five-bedroom “modern traditional” house in the Belle Meade Highlands features four full baths, two half-baths and a three-car garage. One aspect that makes the house particularly striking is the amount of intricate detail, whether it’s the use of reclaimed natural white oak for dramatic effect throughout the house or the gray and white Spanish tile backsplash in the kitchen, which is utilized in abundance for visual impact. The house is as functional as it is beautiful. “You walk through the house and everything makes sense,” says Happy Fulk of Parks Real Estate, who is co-listing the house with Tara McGuire. “It is exactly what you would want in a house. All of the space makes sense — the master being on the main floor. You have your dining room, you

have your office, you have your open family room, your foyer — all of it. The layout, the flow is great. For any type of family, it all makes sense.” The often-coveted first-floor master is particularly impressive. “I think the first thing you notice when you walk into this room is this stunning cathedral ceiling with that wood detail and a very beautiful, large chandelier to kind of fill up the space," says Tara. “It feels like a retreat.” The marble bath features a two-person shower the entire length of the room, complete with two showerheads and a soaking tub. Other highlights include a butler’s pantry, which has a wine cooler and a backsplash of mercury glass; a screened-in porch with a fireplace; and a flex room/office nook with a built-in desk, open shelves, cubbies and drawers. “I would love a room like this in my house,” says Tara, “where you can get life’s clutter out of the way.”

The word spectacular doesn’t even begin to adequately describe this Oak Hill treasure. Situated on 7 acres on the corner of Franklin Pike and Harding Place and encompassing more than 12,500 NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE square feet across multiple structures, this property is a spectacle to behold, without feeling ostentatious or over-the-top. Designed by Blaine Bonadies and built by Brady Fry in 2014, the home feels approachable and cozy, despite its grand size, and it utilizes the expansive property well. The modern construction works in tandem with the natural surroundings to create a contemporary refuge where the beauty of the outdoors takes center stage. This is evident from the moment you step inside the front door and are immediately greeted with a view of the inner courtyard. The views continue through the entire house, built in such a way that nearly every room overlooks the courtyard, the pool area or the yard. The master suite — which boasts customized, glammed-out his-and-hers closets and a magnificent bathroom with soaking tub and marble shower — is located on the main floor and opens to a private screened-in porch. home’s second story is divided into two wings: the children’s wing, which has three bedroom suites and a bonus playroom, and the guest wing, which offers privacy from the rest of the home for its two bedroom suites and office. Rounding out the spectacular spaces in this home are a glass-lined personal gym over the garage and a basement massage room, with its own sauna and relaxation room. The basement also boasts a home theater and a fully secure bunker with pecky cypress paneling, two queen-size bunk beds and a 3-inch steel door. A 1,500-square-foot two-bedroom guest cottage, designed to mirror the main house, sits on the back of the property. Surrounding the resort-worthy pool is a pool house — with a kitchenette and bathroom — and a game room cabana. A drop-down projector in the cabana allows for “dive-in movies” in the pool. The central location makes this home convenient to the city’s best dining, cultural and nightlife offerings, but with amenities worthy of a five-star retreat, you may never want to leave.

There are many historic homes in the Nashville area, but few are as well preserved or have as much personality as 932 W. Main St. in downtown Franklin. Named The Green House, this Queen Anne FRANKLIN, TENNESSEE Victorian home still retains most of its original features, from the leather wallpaper in the staircase to the crystal chandeliers. Built in 1896 by E.E. Green, The Green House is the epitome of turn-of-the-century charm, and charm you it will. As you approach the property, you’ll pass a cattle fence, hitching post and street lantern, all relics of a different world. The home itself greets you with arched and oval windows of stained glass, turrets with conical roofs and scalloped wood shingles, dentil molding and Ionic columns. The moment you step into the 12-foot-tall foyer, you realize what truly makes this home so special. Every inch is unique, from the chandelier to the friezes in the posts of the grand staircase to the foyer fireplace. Speaking of fireplaces, there are nine of them. And each one is wholly original in its design. While they retain their aesthetic, the ones on the main floor have been updated to house remote-controlled gas coal baskets. Along

with those, all of the wiring, plumbing and heating and cooling have been modernized. One of the most notable aspects of this home is the amount of light that courses through every room. With classic wood floors and high ceilings, large windows and stained glass to scatter the light, the entire house feels open, warm and welcoming. Off the foyer, floor-to-ceiling pocket doors slide open to reveal a wide sitting room with accordion shuttered windows. Another set of pocket doors leads to the dining room with built-in silver and china cabinets and another crystal chandelier. The kitchen, complete with all modern appliances and an abundance of cabinet space, opens to a window-lined Gazebo Room, perfect for relaxing on a sunny day. Upstairs, you’ll find four bedrooms and a library with built-in bookcases featuring every bibliophile’s dream: a sliding ladder. You’ll also find more fireplaces and original chandeliers — each of them with a unique design — in every room and hallway. Rich in history, The Green House’s story is far from over. It’s just waiting for a new owner to start the next chapter.

Situated on more than 20 acres atop a large hill overlooking the West Harpeth River Valley, this Franklin home, designed by Jason Goddard, is all about space. FRANKLIN, TENNESSEE Many of the exterior walls are covered in floor-to-ceiling windows, which allow plenty of light to pass through and provide breathtaking views of the valley. Add to those the cathedral ceilings, and you’ll feel the expansiveness everywhere you go. Even the master bathroom, with its glass double shower, heated tile floor and a standalone tub, opens to a private courtyard with an outdoor shower. The structure’s clean lines and spare walls create a sense of serenity and minimalism throughout, with eyecatching touches that add perfect contrast. The main living area houses shelves made from reclaimed wood from the elevator shaft of an old bank in Nashville, and the massive sliding door to the bedroom is made of two front doors from a turn-of-the-century building.

In the kitchen, you’ll find an island serving bar that can seat seven people. The countertops are all hand-poured concrete, and there’s an abundance of cabinet space. But the conversation piece in here is the gorgeous Italian chef ’s stove in black and stainless steel with a matching hood vent. While this home is designed with minimalism in mind, it’s not without its fun. The grand recreation room above the garage has plenty of space for large parties and a full kitchen with a long bar and a full bath. There’s also a home theater room with plenty of seating for screening your favorite films. There are many ways around this house to enjoy being outside. Off of the kitchen is a large covered deck with a fireplace and plenty of room for sitting and watching the valley below. On the east side of the house is a full outdoor kitchen with a grill and a granite bar. But once you step out to the main area behind the house, you enter a backyard wonderland. There’s a saltwater infinity pool with a waterfall, a putting green, a hot tub and a fire pit next to a pergola. With so much space to spread out, both indoors and out, there’s room for everyone to enjoy themselves here.

Anyone wanting to live in the lap of luxury need look no further than 874 S. Curtiswood Lane. The 5-acre estate in Oak Hill offers the best modern conveniences and a comfortable lifestyle in a NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE remarkable historic home. Plus, it has a park-like backyard that’s to die for. Built in 1935 in the architectural revival style best described as Monterey, the property boasts 10,200 square feet of living space that includes a guest cottage and pool house and has a total of five bedrooms, eight full baths and three half-baths. Impressive front gates and a long driveway tell visitors they are in for something special when they step inside. To one side of the showstopping steel and brass staircase, a cozy study looks across the large living room and music room to the outdoors. To the other, a dining room holds one of the home’s seven fireplaces. Beyond, the state-of-the-art kitchen opens to the laid-back family room, where sets of French doors lead to the patio, just as in other public rooms. Upstairs, the spacious master suite has a fireplace and covered porch overlooking the backyard, and the luxurious master bath has a soaking tub, extra-large shower and two walk-in closets. Three ensuite bedrooms are located on the other side of the upper level, separated by a beverage bar and second den. The charming guest cottage sits at a distance from the house, ensuring everyone’s privacy. In recent years, no expense was spared or detail overlooked in elevating the home and grounds to perfection. The latest mechanical systems — such as geothermal heating — and sophisticated interior attest to that fact. Page | Duke created the ideal outdoor living area, where lush plantings now thrive under established trees. The main “room,” with a sleek stone fireplace and benches, looks at the upper lawn — versatile enough to be a soccer field or setting for a party tent — and to the newly redone pool and spa area, where the pool house — with sauna, full kitchen and fireplace — is used year-round. The opportunity to own a historic, 5-acre estate in Oak Hill doesn’t come along often, especially one that so completely blends the best of 21st-century design and ingenuity with a family-friendly lifestyle. Truly, the next owner has nothing else to do except move in.

WHAT TO SEE
GIZMO! (1977)
PLAYTIME (1967) Recommended by Zack Hall, Programming and Education Coordinator and In-House Media Producer Jacques Tati’s retro-futuristic comedy Playtime is the perfect diversion during this time of social distancing. Apart from being a masterpiece of modernism, this wry tale of a befuddled Monsieur Hulot roaming through a high-tech Parisian office building is a celebration of public spaces, our obsession with progress, and the exhausting hustle and bustle of contemporary life. Also, who wouldn’t want to spend a couple hours in Paris right about now? Where to find it: Criterion Channel, Amazon Prime
Recommended by Bob Roberts, Front of House Staff
SECRET HONOR (1984)
Gizmo! was one of the first movies I ever watched, and it led me to become a lifelong documentary fan. There’s lots of humor and lots of love for its subjects, who dared to try something new in an effort to improve themselves or the world around them. Sometimes they succeeded and sometimes not, but their pursuit of their dreams is a beautiful example of what makes us all human.
Recommended by Toby Leonard, Programming Director
Where to find it: YouTube
Where to find it: Criterion Channel (alongside a beautiful feature on the Belcourt and a handful of other recommendations on our behalf), Amazon Prime
Robert Altman’s 1984 film Secret Honor stars Philip Baker Hall as a post-presidential Richard Nixon, self-quarantined and impeached with no Twitter yet, so a tape recorder, a gun and an ever-receding bottle of whiskey will have to do. A towering performance and a total blast.
Quarantine Watch List
The staff of the Belcourt Theatre recommends films to watch while you shelter in place
CANE RIVER (1982) Recommended by Mae Moreno, Programming and Marketing Coordinator Cane River is a historically informed love story set in Louisiana’s Natchitoches Parish, a “free community of color.” Aspiring writer and romantic Peter — scion of an elite Creole family — returns to his hometown and falls for historical tour guide Maria. Maria’s disenfranchised, darker-skinned family disapprove, and the lovers must work through Peter’s contentious family legacy as privileged, slave-owning, light-skinned Creoles for their romance to survive. Where to find it: Criterion Channel
JOHN MULANEY & THE SACK LUNCH BUNCH (2019) Recommended by Jason Shawhan, Front of House Staff In John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch, Mulaney and a talented cast of young people create a musical comedy extravaganza with amazing songs, unexpected celebrity guests, striking staging and an unflinching gaze into the chaos of modern life. This is a remarkable work of art that gets funnier and more emotionally resonant with each subsequent viewing. The Free to Be You and Me of the 21st century. Where to find it: Netflix

MY HAPPY FAMILY (2017)
AND LIFE GOES ON (1992) Recommended by Sheronica Hayes, Front of House Manager
THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955)
Abbas Kiarostami’s And Life Goes On is an enigmatic brand of storytelling that seamlessly fuses documentary and fiction. In this film, we journey through an empathetic lens into a world stricken by natural disaster. Kiarostami digs deep into the core of the human condition and dignifiedly exploits the raw magic involved in the healing process of trauma. In love, in friendship and in faith, all things are resolved.
Recommended by Matt Polman, Graphics and Website Coordinator The Night of the Hunter is the kind of film that, even if you haven’t seen it, feels very familiar. A children’s fairy tale parading as a noir thriller, it can be boiled down to good versus evil in Depression-era West Virginia. It was the only film ever directed by British actor Charles Laughton. And if you research the film’s production (which is a story in itself), you’ll know why.
Where to find it: Criterion Channel
Recommended by Allison Inman, Education and Engagement Director In the Georgian film My Happy Family, a 52-year-old woman, without explanation, slips out the door of her family home — where three generations slam doors and shout across the table — and rents a room of her own. Directed by Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon Gross in 2017, this slice-of-life drama is a rich depiction of Georgian culture and a tribute to the inner lives of women everywhere. Where to find it: Netflix
Where to find it: Amazon Prime, iTunes, Google Play, Vudu
We’re all looking for things to do while we shelter in place, and films and television shows are an easy way to pass the time. If you’re struggling with what to watch next, fear not. We asked our friends at the Belcourt Theatre to recommend movies to add to your list. We selected a handful of their suggestions, but you can find even more staff picks on their YouTube channel (youtube.com/belcourttheatre). HAROLD AND MAUDE (1971) Recommended by Brooke Bernard, Development Director Harold and Maude is one of the most original love stories ever told. Filled with so much strangeness and beauty, this tender — and at times macabre — story of unconventional romance is about a death-obsessed young man who finds a deep emotional connection to a life-loving woman 60 years his senior. Set to a Cat Stevens soundtrack, it’s both a satire and a tragedy that implores you to be you. Where to find it: Netflix, Amazon Prime
BLACK ORPHEUS (1959) Recommended by Jessie Griffith, Front of House Management Team Lead and Education Associate In July 2017, the Belcourt screened a 35mm film print of Black Orpheus, a film I’d been hearing about for years from one of our patrons who loved it. So much of the Nashville community came out that night, excited to see a movie we’d only heard about. We all fell in love with it together, with its beautiful colors and infectious music. This movie will brighten your spirits and put a smile on your face! Where to find it: Criterion Channel, Amazon Prime

NROUTE
SLEEP There are nine different tent options that can accommodate up to six people. All tents include beds with luxury linens and wood-burning stoves (complete with firewood and starters), and most have private bathrooms with flushing toilets, sinks and showers. The Stargazer tent includes a viewing window above the king bed for watching the night sky, and the Suite, the most luxurious tent option, comes with a separate lounge area with a queen-size sofa bed.
EAT An on-site canteen offers delicious meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as beer and wine selections. You can arrange to have coffee service delivered to your tent each morning, and box lunches can be ordered if you’re planning a hiking adventure. A fire pit next to the canteen is the perfect spot to end the day with nightly s’mores and an acoustic set from regional musicians.
RELAX Since there’s no Wi-Fi or cell service on the property, you will truly feel disconnected. The tents are roomy enough to enjoy some quiet reading time or a board game (available in the canteen), and most tents are equipped with a deck for lounging outside and enjoying the scenic property. Fire pits throughout the property, as well as complimentary firewood and a helpful staff that’s eager and willing to build a fire, make evening campfires a breeze.
PLAY The property itself offers a few activities — a volleyball court, cornhole and a stack of board games — but Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the bustling tourist towns of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are just a short drive away if you’re looking for hiking, dining, shopping or family-friendly options. An on-site activities concierge can also help arrange a local adventure of your choice, from fly fishing to whitewater rafting to Jeep tours.
The Great Outdoors
Reconnecting with nature at luxury glamping property Under Canvas If you’re looking for a way to experience and enjoy the great outdoors but aren’t in love with the concept of “roughing it,” consider a visit to Under Canvas Smoky Mountains. The luxury glamping resort provides guests with all the perks of a rugged camping experience ( fresh air, peaceful solitude, breathtaking scenery, a chance to disconnect) with the amenities of a hotel (daily housekeeping, organic bath products, a concierge and more). Located on 182 wooded acres about 20 minutes outside of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Under Canvas offers a variety of luxury safari tents with king-size beds, private bathrooms and wood-burning stoves. Part of a larger family of properties, all located near national parks across the country, Under Canvas Smoky Mountains opened in the spring of 2019. The glamping resort reopened for the 2020 season in late May and is taking extra precautions to ensure the health and safety of the staff and guests. If you’re looking for a socially distant getaway and a chance to reconnect with nature, look no further than this breathtaking and relaxing retreat. BY NANCY FLOYD

Nashvillian Mary “Molly” Saint and Max Sung from Columbus, Ohio, met in 2015, while they were both working for tech company Squarespace in New York. They were friends at first and began dating in January 2017. Max proposed in November 2018 on a pier overlooking the East River and Manhattan skyline at sunset. “He executed my perfect daytime date,” said Molly, “with all my favorite weekend activities: a leisurely brunch, a walk through Central Park, a trip to the Museum of Modern Art and cocktails at the Plaza Hotel.” They married in October 2019 in the garden at Belle Meade Plantation with the Rev. Mark DeVries officiating and the Jay Vern Trio providing wedding music. Leaves fell gently from the trees, and as Molly
processed down the aisle with her father to “When the Saints Go Marching In,” her veil fell off after being caught on a boxwood. “We had to stop the ceremony to put the veil back on,” said Molly “but it just fell off again. Third time was the charm.” The couple’s rescue puppy, Waffles, was flower dog. For the wedding, the bride wore a 12-layer ball gown by Dennis Basso. For the reception in the carriage house, she changed into a beaded wrap dress by ASOS design. Branches did all the flowers, Flavor catered the Southern supper, Billie Mochow designed the cake and Anita Hogan helped plan everything. Burning Las Vegas played for dancing all night with Domino’s delivering pizza directly to the dance floor toward the end of the reception.
The party continued at the Wildhorse Saloon until closing time. The newlyweds took a quick, three-day getaway to St. Thomas, to be followed later this year by a three-week trip to the Maldives and Bali. They have recently relocated to Nashville, where Molly, a graduate of Harpeth Hall and Boston College, is senior marketing manager at Chainalysis Inc., and Max, an alumnus of Ohio State University, is assistant vice president for digital experience operations at AllianceBernstein. Their parents are Anne and Mike Saint of Franklin, Tennessee, and Lillian and Winston Sung of Columbus.

My husband has waged war on honeysuckle. Exactly when this plant species was brought to the United States is unknown. It may have been 1906 or as early as 1806. What’s not to love, people must have thought. A fast-growing shrub with abundant flowers and a sweet smell. So benign, in fact, that children can pluck the green tip from the blossom, slowly pull out the stem and then suck the dollop of nectar that awaits at the end. I did this for hours as a child. I loved honeysuckle. Now, it is the bane of our existence. Getting rid of honeysuckle requires an assortment of tools: a chainsaw, sweat and something called a Pullerbear, if you really want to be effective. You order the Pullerbear from a family in Canada, and it’s such a prized item that they will weld your name on it for free. You then use the Pullerbear to dig out the stump and root ball of the honeysuckle, because if you leave the stump and root, you’ve accomplished nothing. New leaves pop out, mocking us, in no time. And one root ball left means the colony will win. Before you know it, your hillside will resemble the unkempt hair of your lazy teenager. The Warner Parks have been battling honeysuckle, too, and if you’ve retreated to those parks to stay sane and active during these past months of quarantine, then you will have seen the effects of their recent campaign to eradicate invasives once and for all. #InvasiveFreeWP is a comprehensive plan to remove invasive species, including the intolerable Japanese honeysuckle. Why is it so bad, you ask? Because it chokes out everything else. It chokes out
all the native plant life and wildlife that could and should be naturally flourishing. When you see the woods without the invasives, it’s abundantly clear. I mean, literally, it is clear. There is visibility and air, space to breathe and move freely. Removing invasives is about achieving clarity on the road to healthy abundance. This is happening in the landscapes around us. Is it happening in our inner landscapes, as well, I wonder? Have we, unwittingly, brought invasives into our society, our culture, our habits and our hearts and let them spread? Screens, screens, everywhere screens. Activities, activities, all the time activities. Excess, excess, everything in excess. What would be growing within if our fertile grounds weren’t so choked with invasives? I’d like to think that the quarantine has been our own #InvasiveFree campaign, whether we initiated it on our own or not. Stripping away all the things that overcrowded our minds and days, there is visibility and air, space to breathe and move freely. The question remains: Have we simply chopped them down, or have we pulled out the stump and root ball? I know from watching my husband battle honeysuckle on our small patch of woods in Forest Hills that this kind of work is backbreaking and relentless. It is not for the weak or the quitter. You have to commit to it and stay at it — be vigilant and strong. The invasives keep invading. The spiritual warrior keeps up the good fight. And slowly, all that which is native — all that which is our true nature — has room to grow and flourish.

Expert etiquette advice from John Bridges
A STORM OF DUST The women who clean our house obviously aren’t coming these days. A couple of months back, they offered to keep coming, but I said no. I told them I’d continue to send them a check for every visit they had to cancel. They were grateful, but as of now, none of my checks have been cashed, although I’ve called them and left them messages. We can afford to pay them, and I figure it eventually will all work out. My husband wants me to call the bank and stop the payments, but that doesn’t feel right to me. I want to keep this relationship going. What should I do? — Anonymous, Forest Hills You’re not just being kind and generous. It may also turn out that you’re being savvy in the long run. Your house cleaners aren’t answering the phone. Let’s assume they’re not running a vacuum for somebody else. Leaving them a message saying you’re concerned about their health and their welfare may get a response. If you can afford to keep sending checks, you have a right to do so. If you have a joint checking account, your husband can call the bank himself and cancel the payments. But make sure he understands — and you understand — your reasoning. There will be major cleaning to be done before too long. Finding replacements may be tough. Your husband has his own right to be concerned as the balance rises on the cleaning account. It may make him more at ease to send a letter to the women (if you have their address) making that clear. If they plan to work for you, they’ll work with you now, too. Kindness is admirable, but this is a business deal.
HAPPY TALK For the last few weeks, I’ve been leaving phone messages for a lot of my friends from here in town and out of town. It astounds me that I get return calls from my out-of-town friends and almost none from local friends. I just want to stay in touch. Should I figure these people are just too busy to get back with me? No, that can’t be the answer. What is? — Anonymous, West End On their own, email, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are filling the communication gap just now. But phone conversations seem to be enjoying a little renaissance — and not just when we’re ordering take-out. It should make you happy to hear the voices of your faraway friends. Your call may come as a surprise — a little event — and they go ahead and hit the answer button. Friends just a few blocks away, however, may figure they‘ll have plenty of time to return your call. Unfortunately, that’s probably true. Setting yourself a schedule of friends to call can be a good way to spend your time — actually talking to another person. But if they continue to leave you unanswered, it’s probably time to edit your call list. Meanwhile, be happy with the people who answer. You can keep them on the list.

No Horsin’ Around Looking back to the early days of Steeplechase
Few springtime traditions compare to the Iroquois Steeplechase. Since 1941, Middle Tennesseans have donned their spring finery and packed elegant picnics and libations before heading to Percy Warner Park to watch the best horses and riders in the world. Unfortunately, Nashville’s rite of spring — with 25,000 people in the grandstands and infield — has been cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions and social distancing regulations. But not completely! On June 27, fans can celebrate the spirit of the Steeplechase at home. The race’s Party in a Box gives supporters an extraordinary package of goodies that will also raise funds for Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Find out more at iroquoissteeplechase.org.
