A New Season Welcoming spring with open arms It might not feel like spring outside, but we’re fully prepared for the coming season. We spent much of our month outdoors in frigid temperatures capturing images for spring. The stunning Ellie Ottaway Josi, talented model and wife of Preds captain Roman Josi, braved the cold for a sunrise shoot atop one of downtown Nashville’s skyscrapers to show off spring fashions from local boutiques. Check out the full feature, and learn a bit more about Ellie, on page 43. We’ve also been spending time outdoors working on a fun new project with the Iroquois Steeplechase. Next month, our inaugural Steeplechase Style Guide will be packaged with our April issue, giving you fashion inspiration for men and women for Race

Day. If you don’t already follow us on social media, check us out on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook (@nfocusmagazine) for a sneak peek of the Style Guide and details about our upcoming Steeplechase Hat Auction and exclusive Sip and Shop event to benefit the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital. We’ll make sure you’re looking fabulous by the time Steeplechase arrives! And speaking of fashion and exciting events this spring, we’ve got an interview with Zang Toi on page 56. Zang will be showing his newest collection at the Symphony Fashion Show on April 14. Read all about his illustrious 30-year career and what to expect when his collection hits the runway at the Schermerhorn. Until then, stay warm and keep thinking spring thoughts! BY NANCY FLOYD

Nancy is a reader of books, rider of bikes and lover of all things local. She lives in East Nashville with her husband, Kyle, and beagle, Gus. Email her at nfloyd@nfocusmagazine.com.

BEHIND THE SCENES

In the Limelight Costumer and director Matt Logan opens up about Broadway, Nashville and the power of local theater TPAC’s Humanities Outreach Tennessee first exposed a young Matt Logan to the possibilities of a career in theater, but it wasn’t until he stepped onto the stage as Gaston in his high school’s production of Beauty and the Beast that his extracurricular pastime became a full-time pursuit. Not long after graduating from Pepperdine’s theater program, he moved to New York where he worked on Broadway in costuming and casting for plays including The Lion King. He also gained — and maintains — an The Basics impressive reputation for his black-and-white cariName: Matt Logan cature drawings of theatriProfession/Title: Designer/ cal performances and was Director/Artist hailed by the New York Hometown: Nashville Times as an heir to the Zip Code: 37064 Hirschfeld tradition. Yards of fabric used to In 2009, Matt returned make Reba’s “Fancy” to his hometown and codresses: 25 founded Studio Tenn, where he served as artistic director for nine years and worked on more than 40 productions. Since his departure in late 2018, Matt’s been very busy. In November, he received national praise for designing not one, not two, but three costumes for Reba McEntire’s performance of “Fancy” at the CMAs. Currently, he’s finishing up costume designs for Virgin Voyages and is in the midst of designing outfits for Reba’s upcoming tour. His biggest venture, Matt Logan Productions, already has projects in the works, including a collaboration with the Rabbit Room and Belmont University where Matt is producing, designing and directing The Hiding Place. He’s particularly excited about the educational component that Belmont brings to the table because, as he puts it, “The best way to invest in the future of our city’s theater artists is to inspire them with quality today.” Matt talked to us about Broadway, Nashville and what’s next. BY HOLLY HOFFMAN PHOTOGRAPH BY DANIEL MEIGS

What’s the most challenging costume you’ve ever designed? Reba’s “Fancy” trio of outfits for the CMAs. What appeared effortless was weeks of rigging and weighing to get the tricks to work right. Let me say Reba was patient. Is there an artist or show that would be a dream project for you? Designing and directing Amadeus. I saw the movie in second grade and have wanted to do it ever since. What’s your favorite Broadway show? Ooooooh, tough. Light in the Piazza, Sweeney Todd ... hard to choose. What’s the first Broadway show you worked on, and what was your job? I was a swing dresser on the Broadway revival of Oklahoma! Why is it important for people to support local theater? It’s a perfect reflection of the community and all the talent living among us. In addition, it’s the perfect example of the phrase “it takes a village,” yet it also unifies that village. What drew you to caricature drawing? Al Hirschfeld. He created the language that I try to speak. I’ve never seen an artist make one line express so much. I’m struggling to keep up and honor the legend. Is there a local personality or group that you would like to draw? Dolly Parton — she is an earth angel.

When you have out-of-town guests visiting, where do you take them? Station Inn to see New Mondays with Carl Jackson and Val Storey. It just doesn’t get much better than that. What’s the best place for cocktails? Rare Bird at Noelle Hotel in Nashville. I love this rooftop bar and their incredible seasonal drinks. For some peace and quiet, what do you like to do? Kayaking down the Harpeth. It’s pure heaven. What’s your favorite local event? The annual Bug Ball benefiting The Theater Bug. These kids in the program will astound you. Every year this event confirms my passion for young artists, especially at The Theater Bug with Cori Laemmel. What person has influenced your life the most? My great-grandmother, Ethel Logan. In her lifetime she went from horse and buggy to computers. She was my babysitter as a child and cared for my family with such devotion. She was the perfect balance of strength and compassion. She taught me what unconditional love is, and beyond that, she was an excellent cook, gardener and craftsman. What’s the one thing you hope never changes about Nashville? The fact that it’s a songwriting town, a storytelling town. I believe that will keep our city grounded.

Abracadabra Conjuring up big fun at Big Night Out

his year’s Big Night Out was an evening full of fun and enchantment. Intrigued by the invitation promising “A Magical Evening,” guests arrived at the Gordon Jewish Community Center wondering what co-chairs Kim Lapidus and Tara Mittelberg might have up their sleeves for the organization’s annual fundraiser. Attendees were charmed from the moment they arrived. Talented magician — and math teacher by day — Harrison Nam fascinated curious onlookers with his repertoire of card tricks. (Perhaps he even beguiled a few to increase their bids in the silent auction.) Among the 200-plus items tempting bidders were numerous opportunities to enjoy local food, beverages and specialty shops, take quick getaways at local hotels, and go on exotic escapes like a trip to Tuscany or an Alaskan cruise. The action moved into the auditorium where chairs and tables were cloaked in black, and tables were topped with towering gold candelabra, red rose petals and oversized playing cards. After Rabbi Saul Strosberg gave the hamotzi, everyone enjoyed a tantalizing meal by Goldie Shepard, whose menu of bourbon salmon with Israeli couscous and barbecue brisket or chicken with baked beans and cole slaw appealed to all appetites. Magician, comedian and master of double-talk Kevin King pulled double duty as auctioneer and entertainer for the night. A perfect choice to run the live auction, he had people bidding madly for desirable items including a night in the penthouse suite at the Fairlane Hotel. The most coveted by far were reserved parking spots at the JCC, and one of them sold for $5,000! He went on to delight the audience with his onstage antics and amaze them with sleight-of-hand tricks before the night was through. Big Night Out’s “magical evening” was more than hocuspocus. The real magic was that the funds raised support the Gordon Jewish Community Center and the diverse cultural, educational, and health and fitness programming it hosts for members of all ages. Isle of Dogs A tail-wagging good time at Unleashed

T

he key to throwing a great party? Dogs. Lots and lots of dogs. The Nashville Humane Association knows no one has a bad time when there’s a room full of furry best friends to keep everyone entertained, which is why their annual dog-friendly charity event is always such a fun (and successful) evening. For Unleashed’s 10th year, held at the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel, hundreds of NHA supporters and their party pooches went all out to dress in the night’s tiki theme. Some dogs and their owners pulled off the ultimate vacation look with matching brightly colored Hawaiian shirts, while others wore leis and sunglasses. One happy corgi gleefully wiggled her way through the hotel’s lobby in a grass skirt, greeting every dog she saw with a kiss on the nose. Aloha, corgi! After mingling with the mutts and perusing items at the well-loaded silent auction, guests and their doggy dates were invited into the dining room for a sit-down dinner, live auction and runway show featuring local celebrities and adoptable NHA pups. Before the auction began — impressively led by current International Auctioneer Champion Trey Morris — co-chair Marcia Masulla announced the good news: The past nine Unleashed events raised a combined total of $1,118,448 for the Nashville Humane Association. That inspiring number — plus endless tropical cocktails from Tito’s Vodka — motivated attendees to be extra generous during the evening’s paddle raise. Then came the runway show. If folks weren’t yet feeling the love, this parade of pups — hosted by WWE star Sheamus and featuring author and wellness coach Sarah Hays, Wilco and Uncle Tupelo drummer Ken Coomer and several others — further tugged the heartstrings, and wallets. It’s hard not to throw a few extra bucks into the pot with hundreds of puppy dog eyes staring you down! So did the 10th Unleashed break a record as organizers hoped? Doggone right it did! And the gravy on the kibble is knowing that every pup featured on the runway that evening was adopted into a forever home within days.

Hosts With the Most Authors, musicians, restaurateurs and politicians lead discussions at Conversations at OZ

nclement weather has plagued the vastly popular Conversations at OZ, the largest fundraiser benefiting OZ Arts Nashville, for the past two years. “Last year was just horrible,” said OZ Arts President, CEO and co-founder Tim Ozgener. “There were tornado warnings. This year there is only a flood advisory.” The torrential rain did not seem to deter any of the 400 patrons in attendance. After all, this is a fun party. Cocktails, dinner and uninterrupted dialogue with 40 of Nashville’s most interesting movers and shakers always makes this a not-to-bemissed hot ticket, blustery weather or not. Event co-chairs Marcela Gómez, Sherri Neal and Josephine VanDevender could not have been more pleased, as once again, this event was sold out. Chef Julia Sullivan from Henrietta Red and The Party Line provided yummy passed apps during the cocktail hour and a delectable family-style dinner. But the real buzz was about the dessert display used as a table centerpiece. Matcha choux au craquelin were strategically balanced on varying sizes of wood blocks surrounded by flickering tea lights. Not only a great example of sustainable living but a conversation starter as well. The format of the party remained the same: Table hosts selected topics, and guests chose which table to buy tickets for based on the host or topic. This year some of the topics included a discussion of the use of hemp beyond CBD, design in an Instagram world, fighting the opioid addiction crisis, 10 years of Nashville fashion, and the future of Nashville public schools. The hosts were as diverse as well, with several authors, restaurateurs, entrepreneurs, musicians and government leaders, including past and current mayors, leading discussions. The mission of OZ Arts is to enrich the greater Nashville landscape by presenting bold new work and opportunities for engagement. If the bright neon lights, animated faces, energetic arm-waving and elevated timbre are any clue, everyone was completely engaged and having a grand time. Mission accomplished. Open Your Heart A banner year for the American Heart Association at the Heart Gala

I

Darryl and Carol Yochem

t was another red-hot night for the American Heart Association at the annual Heart Gala, the organization’s signature fundraising event. In the lobby of the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, guests were met with surprise and delight as red-gloved hands presented Champagne through small openings in a red floral wall. It was a whimsical, playful touch that set the tone for the entire evening. The Laura Turner Concert Hall was a vision in, yes, red, with bold décor that turned more than a few heads. A red light was cast over the room, and tables were draped in black cloths patterned with oversized roses. It created a dramatic and stunning sight as revelers made their way in to enjoy dinner from Kristen Winston. Rick Braddy, a former contestant on both American Idol and The Voice, properly got the party started with a highenergy medley of heart-themed songs. As guests have come to expect from this event, the night was marked with poignant and uplifting moments, like when a beautiful young woman named Meagan Brasher took the stage and shared the story of suffering a stroke in her 20s. The subsequent treatment led to a discovery that Meagan had a hole in her heart, and now that she’s made a full recovery, she’s become a passionate advocate for the AHA. Another moving moment was the presentation of the Martin E. Simmons Award. Longtime AHA volunteer Dick Miller presented the award to Laurie and Jim Seabury — who had quite the small army of fans in attendance — for their service to the nonprofit. Martin’s wife, Judy, who has worked tirelessly to keep the memory of her late husband alive, joined them onstage for the emotional honor. It was another memorable Heart Gala for everyone involved, and best of all, the event raised $1.35 million, a significant increase over last year. Heart-warming news indeed. Leaving a Legacy The Antiques & Garden Show celebrates 30 years

he Antiques & Garden Show saluted its 30th anniversary in style, welcoming some 12,000 guests to the Music City Center over the course of the three-day event. Starting the celebration was the always-popular Benefactors Reception and Preview Party, held the night before the official launch of the show. Hundreds of guests flooded the show floor to get a sneak peek of the 150 art, antiques and horticulture dealers and explore the stunning gardens constructed for the show. Co-chairs Louise Bryan and Ashley Levi, backed by an army of 400-plus volunteers, planned the weekend’s festivities that included lectures and workshops from some of the world’s leading voices in interior design, landscape architecture and hospitality. The co-chairs chose the theme “Legacy” for the 2020 affair, celebrating both the history of the event — now the largest and longest-running show of its kind — and the appreciation for art and antiques that endures for generations. Based on the crowd of eager enthusiasts at the Preview Party, it was clear that the 2020 show was shaping up to be another home run for the Antiques & Garden Show and its beneficiaries, Cheekwood and ECON Charities. Guests were thrilled by the opportunity to shop the seemingly endless array of collectibles before the general public and the chance to explore the six on-site gardens. It may have been freezing outside, but in the Music City Center, spring was in full bloom thanks to the imaginative works of some of the city’s best landscape architects. And while all the constructed gardens were stunning in their own right, the entry garden from Cheekwood, Longshadow Planters, Nashville Landscape Systems, Siteworks, and 3 Fromme Design literally stopped people in their tracks. The open-air structure was filled with tropical plants and greenery and a bubbling fountain. Not surprisingly, Cheekwood once again set the bar for the entire event. Attracting crowds of 12,000 over the course of three days, the Antiques & Garden Show once again proved that its legacy as one of the best shows in the country is secure. Work of Art Tri-Star Arts launches the inaugural Art Ball

W Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, Andrea Zieher

hen you’re launching a new event as ambitious as the Art Ball, it’s helpful to work with collaborators who know how to innovate. The team at Tri-Star Arts proved they were up for the task with the elegant and creative soirée to benefit the Tennessee Triennial at Marathon Music Works. Director Andrea Zieher, who spearheaded the successful ZieherSmith gallery in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, and Art Ball chair (and DAAD architect) Nick Dryden masterminded the event they deemed the Met Gala of the South. The Tennessee Triennial is a 2021 cross-state event with the exciting and — judging from the Art Ball’s turnout — completely attainable goal of establishing a world-class contemporary art event in Tennessee. The décor was minimal and understated to make room for the partygoers, who provided the real ornamentation. Artist Vadis Turner gave herself a pencil-thin mustache as a chic, Surrealism-nodding accessory. Designer Andra Eggleston was regal in a flapper-esque feathered headdress and Statue of Liberty-colored gown. And community organizer Tequila Johnson, who co-founded Nashville’s Equity Alliance, wore a kofia-style hat with effortless glamour. Dinner was prepared by The Party Line, the new catering company from Henrietta Red chef Julia Sullivan. A perfectly chewy octopus salad spiced with fennel and chilis was an early crowd-pleaser, and the courses were all as inventive and tasteful as the best contemporary art. Singer-songwriter Holly Williams acted as host, welcoming Joy Williams to the stage for a captivating acoustic set. Andrea and Nick addressed the crowd together to present a documentary-style video about the Tennessee Triennial. The ball ended with an official After Party, which was attended by artists and community members from across the city who arrived fresh from the First Saturday events in downtown and Wedgewood-Houston galleries, the spirit of artistic creativity filling the air.

Music fills the air at Nashville Opera’s La Bella Notte

a Bella Notte’s move to the JW Marriott Downtown Nashville last year was so well received that co-chairs Tracey Pearson and Don Holmes did not think twice about returning in 2020. Attendees obviously approved because they flocked to the hotel to celebrate the Nashville Opera’s extraordinary talent and outstanding performances while raising funds for its education programs. During the cocktail hour, guests admired a glittering array of antique and estate jewelry and, of course, mingled around the bars. “This drink is named for me!” exclaimed Ann Marie McNamara, surprised and flattered by the Ann M Bella, the specialty cocktail. Appropriately made with prosecco, it was as bubbly as its namesake. In the ballroom, Robb McCluskey used silver and French navy as a sophisticated backdrop for the dramatically lit stage. There, oversized vases held suspended Cymbidium orchids and were lit to change color throughout the night in sync with coordinating lights behind the stage. Opera Guild President Anita Cash kicked off the program while everyone was enjoying the first dish of the scrumptious four-course meal. CEO and Artistic Director John Hoomes kept things moving smoothly through each course as well as in between when the Mary Ragland Emerging Artists performed. They dazzled the room with beloved opera and Broadway songs from La Traviata, Carmen, Man of La Mancha and more before closing the night with the traditional singing of “La Bella Notte” from Disney’s Lady and the Tramp. In addition to celebrating music, the night also honored the Opera’s most staunch supporters. Esther and Jeff Swink received the Francis Robinson and Marion Couch Award for their years of consistent and enthusiastic support of the organization and the Opera Guild. As for honorary chairs Ann Marie and Martin McNamara? Years before in Santa Fe, they were attending an event that combined a multi-course dinner with arias when Martin said, “This could be a great fundraiser for the Nashville Opera.” Wow, was he right!

A Night at the Movies

The Belcourt celebrates 20 years of A Red Carpet Evening Lauren MacLeod and Danny Bua

I

t was quite a remarkable year for the Belcourt Theatre’s A Red Carpet Evening, which celebrated its 20th anniversary and saw record-breaking sales for tickets, sponsorships and the silent auction. Executive Director Stephanie Silverman joked about how far the Oscars viewing party has come since it began as hot dogs in the parking lot. One factor that’s certainly helped it become the world-class event it is today is the tireless efforts of co-chairs Amos Gott and Holly Hoffman, who have spearheaded the event for the past eight years and seven years respectively. Amos and Holly, once again, made the art house sparkle for the black-tie affair. They rolled out the red carpet for guests to enjoy the Academy Awards in style, among fellow film lovers. In the 1925 Hall, the behind-the-screen backstage area was transformed into a swanky lounge for VIP ticket holders, complete with a private spread from G Catering and comfy lounge seating. The space was decked out in white from top to bottom, with glam white feathered chandeliers hanging over sleek white couches. Everyone was quick to get to their seats as the show began, not wanting to miss a single award. And since a trip to the movies isn’t complete without snacks, G Catering satisfied appetites with a cocktail supper, while the Belcourt concessions served up popcorn and candy. The fans in attendance were very enthusiastic about their support for specific films, notably Parasite, which has been running at the Belcourt since late October. Everyone in the audience was thrilled to see the South Korean film take home four Oscars, including Best Picture. Fortunately, for anyone who hasn’t yet seen Parasite or other Oscar-nominated films, the Belcourt’s diverse programming brings artistic, independent and lesser-known films to cinephiles across Nashville and beyond.

FASHION

High Fashion When Ellie Ottaway Josi moved to Nashville in 2011, modeling was the last thing on her mind. She came to the city to study music business at Belmont University, but when an opportunity to model with The Block Agency came along, she took it. What began as a side gig in college quickly turned into a successful career that has taken Ellie all over the world. After signing with The Block Agency in Nashville, Ellie landed modeling contracts with Wilhelmina Models in Miami, Elite Model Management in Los Angeles and Miami, the Syndical for the Latin American market and a few agencies in Europe. Her career has allowed her to traverse the globe for modeling gigs, from the jungles of South America to the coast of France. “I never would have thought I would pursue modeling ever, but I am truly so glad that I did,” Ellie says. “It gives me the opportunity to see the world, and that is why I fell so madly in love with it. Although it can be lonely at times traveling by myself, the work days are certainly never boring. Every new job, I get to work with a different team, which I love. I am very much a people person and l love meeting new people.” Modeling and travel aren’t the only loves that Ellie has discovered while in Nashville. After getting engaged on Christmas of 2017, Ellie tied the knot in July 2019 with longtime beau (and captain of the Nashville Predators) Roman Josi. The newlyweds live outside of town, enjoying the quietness of the countryside and the close proximity to city life. And while Ellie hints that a family could be on the horizon, for now she’s focused on her career. “I know there is a window for modeling and so my goal is to really give it everything I have right now,” she says.

Good or bad, I wanted to be Zang Toi. 56 >> MARCH 2020 | nfocusmagazine.com Zang_MAR20.indd 56

F E AT U R E

Living the Dream

Designer Zang Toi opens up about his career, his new collection and the Symphony Fashion Show

A

fter launching his first collection in August 1989, Zang Toi sent hand-colored, photocopied sketches to every major retailer and publication. His clothes caught the eye of then-new Vogue editor Anna Wintour, and in the March 1990 issue, she declared him one of four “New Faces” to watch in the new decade. The Malaysian-born artist was one of the first Asian designers she championed, and he quickly became a favorite among the fashion elite. To this day, he has handled his own publicity and is one of the very few designers to own their businesses. After more than 30 years, Zang shows no signs of slowing down. He travels constantly — in his free time, while working on collections and seven to eight months each year for trunk shows. That includes those held at Gus Mayer, a relationship that dates back to the mid-’90s. (He gives his “biggest thanks to all the Nashville ladies for their love and support.”) Zang will feel that love again as the featured designer at the Symphony Fashion Show on April 14 and over the following two days at a trunk show at Gus Mayer. We caught up with the exuberant designer on his most recent visit, and he shared the inspiration for his Fall 2020 collection, advice for budding designers and his favorite places in Nashville.

Can you give us any hints about what we can expect from your collection? Well, [my Fall] 2020 runway collection is a tribute to my beloved adopted home, New York City. Most people think of New York as the concrete jungle, so we’re going to start with shades of black and gray. In the middle, I bring color into the collection [inspired by] the art scene of the East Village — what I call pop art color. How can you do a New York collection without taxicab yellow, orange, hot pink and blue? And then we end the show on a dramatic note. The last six looks for the collection will be beautiful [with an] exquisitely hand-beaded New York City skyline on all the evening looks. It’s going to be very, very dramatic. What’s your process when you begin working on a new collection? Usually the process starts anywhere from 10 to 12 months before the collection will show. While I was finishing up the Fall 2020 [collection], I started thinking about what I would be doing for Spring 2021, which will be held in September. So every collection is different, every season differs. Sometimes we start with a theme, or sometimes a place I want to travel to. It could be an exhibition that’s taken place, or a book that I’m reading, or an old movie that I’m watching. Every collection is completely different. You’re in a unique position as a designer because you own your business. What advice would you have for an up-and-coming or aspiring designer? My advice for all young, aspiring designers is to dream big. Don’t be afraid to dream big, and follow your own creative path. When I was one of the top five students from the class at Parsons School of Design, the chairman of the department wanted to place me with Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Perry Ellis. … And I shall never forget our parting words before I graduated. He was so mad at me when I said, “Mr. Rizzo, I already have a job waiting for me with a young designer, a small fashion house. I will be the only designer. … With Calvin, I’m going to be one of the 20 designers in a cubicle. ... Whereas with a small house, I get to do everything.” And he said, “You will never make it in this business.” As I looked at it, you have to follow your own instincts. You cannot be afraid to do your own thing. I told him, “I don’t want to be the next Calvin Klein, I don’t want to be the next Donna Karan, I want to be Zang Toi.” … Good or bad, I wanted to be Zang Toi. That’s my advice for the young people. Don’t copy other designers. It’s good to look up to a certain designer that you love, to be inspired by that, but don’t be afraid to do your own thing, to be your own person and dream big. Dream big but work hard, and work smart to turn that dream into reality. Speaking of that, do you have an all-time favorite designer? Oh, yes! My all-time fashion hero is the late Yves Saint Laurent. He had such a big influence on what I do as a designer. Saint Laurent inspired so many. I think he is one of the very few designers in the world able to inspire and influence every generation of designer. One of the reasons why he’s the most important fashion figure for my career — for me — is that the repertoire of his talent is so vast. He was the first to put women in pantsuits, the safari suits and the tuxedoes for evening. He was the first one to do the fantasy collections [inspired by] China, Russia, gypsy and India. The loveliest thing though, he was one of the first designers that incorporated paintings and turned art [into fashion]. The list

goes on and on. … He made some of the most glamorous, decadent but wearable evening gowns. Some gowns, they’re beautiful, but then you can become a walking costume. But Saint Laurent always managed to tread that line between very beautiful but also wearable. After 30 years in the fashion industry, what still gets you excited? Just the process of creating collections. The trips that I’m able to take before I launch a collection, to get away for about a week to just lock myself in a beautiful hotel room or a café, restaurant, lobby of a grand hotel, sketching my collection. When I’m away from everybody, shut off my phone and no one can reach me, nothing makes me happier than when I can stay up all night till 6 a.m. sketching the collection. That is such a fun part of it. And after 30 years, the other part that still gets me very excited is when I go and do trunk shows, whether for Gus Mayer in Nashville or Saks Fifth Avenue all across the country. Meeting my customers, working with my customers, helping them pick out a beautiful, chic wardrobe. When I see a beautiful smile on their face and see that they’re happy, that gets me really excited. You’ve dressed some of entertainment’s most recognizable names: Sharon Stone, Patti LaBelle, Elizabeth Taylor and Farrah Fawcett. Is there somebody you haven’t had a chance to work with yet that you’d like to dress? Yes. It would be a dream come true to dress Cate Blanchett. She has such a great sense of style. She’s a natural beauty — there’s no Botox, but she’s beautiful. Not to mention that she’s one of the best actresses we have of this generation. When you’re not designing gorgeous clothes and traveling for trunk shows, what do you like to do? Traveling around the world. That’s one of my favorite things. Traveling around the world, eating really great, delicious food from each country. I just love it. If I go to Africa, I want to eat the local cuisine; I want to hang out with the local people. If I go to Argentina, I want to dive into the authentic Argentina cuisine. If I go to Morocco, I want to go dive into the couscous. I think if you go with an open mind, travel can be a beautiful life lesson. When you’re in Nashville, is there a place you like to go or something you like to do or see? Yes, my great friend Janice [Elliott Morgan] likes to tease me all the time. I’m more of a traditionalist. I’m not into trendy places and I don’t party, but I like good food. There are two places I love to go to. Janice, of course, always tries to drag me into all the trendy restaurants. … I tell her, “Janice, I’m fortunate enough to travel all over the world to eat, [so] just take me to good traditional cooking.” And my two favorite places in Nashville are Jimmy Kelly’s, the steakhouse. … The way they will bring a double portion of cornbread — the cornbread is to die for. And, of course, the steak is delicious. … And another place, I always have Janice take me to is Pancake Pantry. I love the pancakes. They’re so delicious. STEP INSIDE

FLOWER POWER No need to wait for the first tulip or daffodil to bloom. Just head to Gucci and peruse the brand’s collection of Ophidia GG Flora bags. In the store’s front room, the colorful, flowered bags line the shelves. They are available in an assortment of shapes including backpacks, totes, bucket bags and shoulder bags. There is also a wide assortment of horse-bit handbags in all different colors, shapes and materials.

Icon Status

Gucci brings its timeless style to The Mall at Green Hills

MIGHTY MICKEY Mickey Mouse is featured throughout the capsule collection. There’s a pensive Mickey reclining along the base of an ivory leather chunky-soled sneaker; and a happy Mickey tapping his toe in a sea of GGs on a leather-trimmed canvas bucket bag. The Disney x Gucci collaboration also features Mickey watches and jewelry, including a sterling bracelet with black-and-white enamel charm featuring the beloved mouse showing off his signature sly smile.

When shoppers visit the new Gucci store in The Mall at Green Hills, they’ll find an iconic symbol well over 50 years old and not just the horse-bit loafer they might expect. Beyond the front room, where elegant women’s apparel and wall displays of handbags are interspersed with luxe green velvet furniture, the legendary Italian fashion house pays tribute to another legend — Disney’s Mickey Mouse. Creative director Alessandro Michele celebrates the Year of the Mouse, with Mickey gracing canvas bags, shoes, scarves, small leather goods and clothing. It’s not the first time the designer has recognized the Lunar New Year. For example, last year, he introduced a capsule collection honoring the Year of the Pig. One of the key design elements in the 5,000-square-foot space is the herringbone wood floor accented by geometric black-and-white marble polychrome inlays. Oriental rugs in rich hues are layered over one another, bringing yet another dimension to the sumptuous design. The store carries men’s and women’s ready-to-wear clothing and shoes, as well as handbags, small leather goods, accessories and luggage. The only lines not carried at the Nashville location are home décor and children’s clothing. A little history: Guccio Gucci opened his first store in Florence, Italy, in 1921, according to fashion industry bible Women’s Wear Daily, and the brand’s first U.S. store in New York City in 1953. That same year, according to WWD, the Gucci loafer, with its signature metal horse bit, was launched. In 1994, Tom Ford was named creative director and served in that role for 10 years. Fast-forward to 2015, when the company appointed a new CEO, Marco Bizzarri, who previously helmed Stella McCartney and Bottega Veneta. He named Alessandro as creative director. “The company was really losing speed and was a bit dusty,” said Marco, in a March 2018 interview with Fast Company. For the past five years, Alessandro has approached the collections with humor and just the right amount of bling to appeal to millennials — sequined dresses and bags and loafers with pearl-studded heels. In 2018, a capsule collection, timed with the Year of the Dog, featured the faces of his own Boston terriers, Bosco and Orso, on bags, clothing and even watches. And while the strategy made Gucci “cool again” as Fast Company puts it, fashion is all about change. The womenswear Spring 2020 collection is a departure from Alessandro’s earlier seasons, featuring fewer prints and embellishments and simpler, sexier looks. Ranch to Restaurant E3 Chophouse offers a fine dining experience in the heart of Hillsboro Village Music icons Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean were so smitten with the ranch-torestaurant concept owned by friend and professional baseball veteran Adam LaRoche that they convinced the LaRoche family to expand their Steamboat Springs nameplate to Music City. Located at the Hillsboro Village intersection of 21st and Wedgewood, the gleaming three-story E3 Chophouse, a partnership among Bryan, Aldean and LaRoche, is the only E3 location beyond the Colorado flagship. Valet park around the back and enter the cozy, clubby ground-floor bar for a cocktail before working your way upstairs toward second-floor dining and a rooftop bar with indoor, outdoor and private dining options. The centerpiece of the menu is steak, sourced from E3 Ranch in Kansas and other farms that pledge to raise cattle without hormones and antibiotics, but the repertoire swings wide to include coastal delicacies such as oysters, octopus, lobster, king crab and an extravagant caviar bar. This sleek spin on a classic steakhouse provides a new dining anchor for the Hillsboro Village corridor and offers a fresh perspective on the iconic Vandy neighborhood. WHAT TO EXPECT

WHY TO GO

WHAT TO EAT

Expect to see Hillsboro Village in a new light. Looking over the railings of the rooftop lounge, which glows under a dramatic fire pit and festive bistro bulbs, it’s hard to believe you’re in the same quirky-quaint neighborhood that’s home to low-slung lovable landmarks Fido and Pancake Pantry. From the neon signature of the nearby new Moxy hotel to the everexpanding skyline of Vanderbilt across the road, historic Hillsboro Village is shining with a new polish.

Located at the crossroads of one of Nashville’s most beloved neighborhoods, E3 offers a new way to enjoy the Vandy district. Views are spectacular. Drinks are dramatic, delivered with eye-popping flourishes such as smoke and bubbles. And the menu offers a rare blend of comfort and extravagance, ranging from street corn and mac and cheese to caviar and a $75 ribeye. With prices ranging from $12 truffle fries to Russian Osetra caviar upwards of $125 an ounce, another reason to go — after the dazzling rooftop view — is if someone wants to treat you to a special occasion. Meanwhile, part of the proceeds from E3 Chophouse go to support veterans and to fight against human trafficking.

The steaks are high and mighty fine at E3 Chophouse, and it’s hard to pass up the carpaccio, like a supple red silk handkerchief draped on an oversized plate with aioli and arugula. But even Meatless Monday would be memorable among the vegetables and pescatarian options, such as lobster bisque; chilled prawns with yuzu cocktail sauce; charred broccoli with salt, chili flake, garlic and lemon; cauliflower and shishitos with brown butter and almonds; and a charred Caesar salad prepared tableside and topped with tiny fried anchovies. Or stop in for drinks and dessert and let a new view of an old favorite neighborhood serve as the main course.

Kara Earthman and Harrison Tucker met briefly while attending college in Virginia. She was a student at the University of Virginia, and he attended Washington and Lee. They were reintroduced by mutual friends in Nashville in early 2015. On October 5, 2018, Harrison surprised Kara by proposing during a walk through the woods at his family’s home near Old Rag Mountain in Virginia. Both sets of parents were on the scene waiting to celebrate with the couple. On the same date, one year later, Kara and Harrison married at West End United Methodist Church with the Rev. Brandon Baxter officiating.

Before the ceremony, organist Andrew Risinger and trumpeter Jeffrey Bailey played “Shenandoah” as a tribute to Harrison’s family roots in Virginia. The wedding reception was held at Cheekwood with cocktails served at sunset on the Wisteria Arbor followed by dinner and dancing in a clear tent on the Swan Lawn. Nashville’s own Music City Toppers played non-stop disco tunes with a special performance by the groom’s band, the Granny White Boys. A mirrored disco ball, ’70s-style wigs and colored John Lennon glasses added to the festivities. Jessica Sloane planned the event, and Melissa Broadwell of Vintage Florals designed the

flowers. The Clean Plate Club catered the dinner. At the end of the evening, Kara and Harrison descended the stairs of the Cheekwood mansion amid cheers by family and friends waving UVA and W&L shakers. After a wedding trip to St. Lucia, the couple returned to Nashville where Kara is a women’s health nurse practitioner at Hendersonville Obstetrics and Gynecology and Harrison is the director of operations for Aloompa. The bride is the daughter of Sandra and Bill Earthman of Nashville, and the groom is the son of Peggy and Carter Tucker of Richmond, Va. BY SANDY NELSON

Ingram New Works Playwrights Party Excitement always runs high when the Nashville Rep’s Ingram New Works Playwrights Party rolls around, and this year was no different. Actors, supporters and fans of the Nashville Rep gathered at Woodlea, the Kimpton Aertson Hotel’s stylish event space, eager to meet the up-and-coming playwrights chosen for the Ingram New Works Labs. Jeesun Choe, Gina Femia, Morgan Gould and Haygen-Brice Walker will each develop a new play to be presented during the Ingram New Works Festival planned for May 11-16. Symphony Fashion Show Kick-Off

NASHVILLE

It was a lively evening of fashion and fun when committee members of the Symphony Fashion Show filled Gus Mayer to welcome Zang Toi, this year’s featured designer. While sipping Champagne and nibbling on bites from Kristen Winston Catering, ladies viewed — and ordered! — stunning dresses from his Spring 2020 collection. Co-chairs Barbara Burns and Ashley Rosen shared a few show details, including one that thrilled everyone: Barbara Bovender was named honorary chair for the 15th annual affair, which will be held at the Schermerhorn on April 14. Ballet Ball Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Party No one seemed to mind that it was a cold, rainy night when Ballet Ball co-chairs Allison Cotton and Emily Humphreys welcomed members of the Ladies and Gentlemen’s Committee to a special evening held in their honor. Perhaps it was the sight of two Nashville Ballet dancers greeting them from the windows of hosts Mary Morgan and Paul Ketchel’s home. Guests enjoyed crab Louis radish cups, mini croque madames and more from Dani Kates, who was deliciously inspired by the black-tie gala’s Versailles theme. Antiques & Garden Show Bourbon Party Friday night’s Bourbon Party was a fun way to take in everything the 30th annual Antiques & Garden Show had to offer. During the casual evening, guests strolled through the gardens and shopped for antiques and garden accessories. They also snacked on a tasty mix of Southern fare and washed it down with specially crafted bourbons, including Coopers’ Craft, Old Forester, Gentleman Jack and Woodford Reserve. The sounds of country artist Elizabeth Lyons could be heard throughout the show floor for everyone’s entertainment. BY HOLLY HOFFMAN PHOTOGRAPHS BY ERIC ENGLAND continued on page 70

La Bella Notte Patrons Party The Hermitage Hotel is a perfect setting for any ritzy affair, and that was certainly the case with La Bella Notte’s Patrons Party. Guests gathered on the historic hotel’s veranda for cocktails to start the evening. They then moved to the Grand Ballroom for four elegant courses, including New York strip steak and flourless chocolate torte, each accompanied by exquisite wine pairings. The highlight of the evening was a performance from Michael Anderson and Spencer Riechman, members of the Nashville Opera’s Mary Ragland Emerging Artist Program. Nashville’s Top 30 Under 30, a group of young professionals recognized for their civic and philanthropic efforts, engaged in a worthwhile — and friendly — competition to raise funds for the Tennessee chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Altogether, these go-getters brought in more than $313,000, and they celebrated the success with family and friends during a party held at the Sheraton Grand Downtown Nashville Hotel. At the top of the list was Tiara Coleman, who collected a record-breaking $36,090! BY HOLLY HOFFMAN PHOTOGRAPHS BY MICHAEL W. BUNCH

Jitish Kallat: Return to Sender

In this group show, local artists present work — photography, sculpture and installations — inspired by a seemingly innocuous thrift store find: a tattered old book called Famous Fables by Aesop. Contributing artists include New Hat Projects, Ashley Doggett, Huger Foote, Leslie Holt, Emily Wiener and more. Through April 4. Gratis. David

Indian artist Jitish Kallat’s solo exhibit includes two installations, Covering Letter (terranum nuncius) (2019) and Covering Letter (2012). The pieces use sound, projections, photographic transparencies and fog to present some of humankind’s most historical communications, from correspondence between Mahatma Gandhi and Adolf Hitler to sounds inspired by those that were launched into space by NASA as messages to extraterrestrial life. NFOCUSMAGAZINE

A lot of my friends are getting married, and I get invited to almost all their weddings. I don’t have a lot of fancy clothes in my closet, but I do have a black dress that I wear to everything. It really doesn’t bother me to be seen in the same dress more than once, but one of my friends has come straight out and told me that black won’t do for a wedding. I’ve got education loans to pay off, and I don’t want to go shopping for something in some color or the other that I may never wear again. Am I right? — Anonymous, 12South Take your friend’s advice, or let it lie. Editing your wardrobe can never start too early, but, yes, your friend is right. A little black dress will do well enough at a funeral, but it doesn’t add much fun to a wedding. But if it’s what you’ve got, wear it. All the other women may well be wearing the same thing; you won’t be alone. You can dress up the dress with a scarf or a bright little jacket. If your dress happens to be strapless, you’ll need a jacket anyhow, especially if the ceremony’s being held in a church or a synagogue. (Anywhere else, I fear, all bets are off.) Perhaps, if your friend is worried about what’s on your back, she might start an online fundraiser for a new dress — or to pay off your college debt. Your lack of concern about repeating the same dress over and over is admirable, even enviable. But before long you’re going to get tired of seeing your same old self in the mirror. So give yourself a break and think about spring. You can find something that’s going to be around for at least six months. Save up and hit the stores when the sales are on — because you want to, not just to calm a rigid friend.

HANDS OFF I’ve seen pictures lately of men at white-tie parties wearing white gloves. Some of them are with their boyfriend dates. Where does that come from? They look odd to me. Can you explain what’s going on? — Anonymous, Gallatin

They may have come from a rental store, along with the suits. If we’re paying close attention to what’s absolutely correct — as I do — gloves are right when a white-tied gentleman is on a dance floor. If he places his hand lightly against a lady’s back, he wouldn’t want his sweaty palm to spoil her dress. When he’s not ballroom dancing, however, gloves can make finger snapping very difficult. The days of white gloves, I fear, are gone, unless the gentleman has a debutante on his arm, is part of a flag corps or is a headwaiter. A gentleman’s gloves have to come off when he sits down for dinner. He has to remove them when he’s offering a handshake — but not when kissing a lady’s hand (if he dares!). And he may very well lose them in the men’s room — always a problem when he gets back to the rental store on Monday.

NRETROSPECT

Chow Down Reliving the hilarity of the Pasta Premier It was always pasta, pasta and more pasta on the menu at the Vanderbilt School of Nursing’s crowd-pleasing Pasta Premier. Part cook-off, part costume party, guest chefs prepared their favorite dishes while decked out in outrageous getups. Teams — ranging from truck stop waitresses and drivers to bullfighters to bumble bees — would shamelessly bribe the judges and put on a show for the diners who passed by their stations as each vied to receive the awards for Best Presentation, Most Original or the highly coveted People’s Choice. Funds raised at the carbfest helped provide scholarships for nursing students.
