Paul Henri, Manager, Fort Gordon Recycling Center

The Earth – everybody’s concerned about it. After all, it’s the planet we live on and even though we could probably get to Mars or Venus if we really tried, they do not seem nearly as nice. Since we’re stuck here, we may as well try to keep the place relatively clean, which historically we’ve had kind of a mixed record on. Environmental issues can seem so big and intractable that they feel hard for one person to address. But there’s actually quite a bit each of us can do to help the environment, starting in our kitchens. And, as luck would have it, conserving the earth can also be a great way to save a little cash too! Here are ten easy ways to green your kitchen and save a little money in the process.

1 Waste Less Food Some estimates of how much food gets wasted run as high as one third! That’s a lot of resources, and money, being thrown right in the trash. By planning, using leftovers wisely, and keeping an eye on what’s in your pantry and needs to be eaten, you can make sure that the energy being used to grow and deliver your food is being put to good use.

2 Use Non-Toxic Cleaners One of the easiest ways to green your kitchen is to ditch harsh, often poisonous, chemical cleaners. Non-toxic, common ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, or lemons can be powerful disinfecting and cleaning agents. Learn more about common household items that are great green cleaners at: http://blogs.babble.com/familykitchen/2012/07/17/8-common-ingredients-thatdouble-as-green-cleaners/

3 Try Going Local Locally-produced ingredients have less distance to travel, meaning these foods tend to focus on flavor and not heartiness. Buying local foods in season can also be surprisingly cost-effective,

especially if you join a local CSA – community supported agriculture – where you can share in the bounty of the harvest. Look for deals at the markets by speaking with farmers and asking about bargains or buying in bulk. Learn more at: http://www.brooklynsupper.net/2011/10/ community-supported-agriculture/

4 Ditch the Plastic Especially if we use them under extreme temperatures, plastic containers can leach dangerous contaminants into our foods. From sippy cups to leftover storage, look for longer-lasting glass or stainless steel options instead. Learn more at: http://science.time. com/2011/03/08/study-even-bpa-free-plasticsleach-endrocrine-disrupting-chemicals/

5 Go Meatless The meat industry is responsible for about a fifth of greenhouse gas emissions, so reducing the amount you eat, even if it’s just for one day a week, can make a big impact on your household contribution to global climate change. Learn more at: http://blogs.babble. com/family-kitchen/2012/07/30/5-simple-thingsyou-can-do-to-help-end-hunger-with-grow-fromoxfam/

6 Reuse Storage Bags One place plastic can make sense in your kitchen is with reusable plastic storage bags – they are a great way to reduce food waste by making it easy to see what produce you have in your fridge. They can also be washed and reused, making them a thrifty and environmentallyconscious choice. If you’d like to banish the plastic altogether, look for reusable, washable cloth produce bags. Learn more at: http://blogs. babble.com/family-kitchen/2012/07/18/how-towash-and-reuse-your-hefty-slider-bags/

7 Know When to Buy Organic Grown without pesticides or artificial fertilizers, organic food reduces the amount of chemicals that run off and enter the water supply. Organics can also be a good way to limit your family’s exposure to pesticides. It might not always be feasible to buy organic on your family’s budget, but some conventional produce is worse than others. Familiarize yourself with the products that are most important to buy organic for your family’s health and the environment. Learn more on the 2012 Dirty Dozen and the Clean Fifteen: http://blogs.babble.com/familykitchen/2012/06/27/the-2012-dirty-dozenshould-you-go-organic/ and http://blogs.babble. com/family-kitchen/2012/06/28/get-to-know-theclean-15-and-save-big-on-groceries/

8 Compost Why pay for fertilizer when you can make your own? Rich compost is great for plants, and your everyday kitchen scraps can be turned into garden gold. Even a small outdoor space is enough to make the most of your food waste. Learn the composting basics at: http://www.nyc. gov/html/nycwasteless/html/compost/composting_ nyc.shtml

9 Make the Most of Ingredients Lots of ingredients can be transformed into second meals. For instance, we like to roast whole chickens and then use the back and wings for hearty chicken stock--one chicken, two meals! Learn to make your own chicken stock at: http://blogs.babble.com/familykitchen/2012/06/29/make-your-dollars-stretchwith-hefty-chicken-stock/

10 Opt for Cloth Whether you’re using dishcloths or cloth napkins, reusable fabrics can save you money and dramatically reduce waste in the kitchen.

planningyour career Dealing with Difficult People Kim Hussey, Owner, Plan4Sucess, LLC

bathroom. His outrageous role-play always leads to lots of laughter. Since most of us will not want to use the restroom technique, I will instead offer the information I learned in the CareerTrack session. There are 3 generic techniques that can be used with difficult people: 1. Blending or pacing – You pull back physically and emotionally when you are with a difficult person. 2. Backtracking – You repeat what the person said with no reaction or value. 3. Clarifying – Ask questions that make the person think about what is being communicated. This forces the difficult person to be more specific. Clarifying can also defuse anger and it gives you more time to respond. Here are some examples: As I was driving down Washington Road this morning, I saw a sticker on the rear window of a newer model truck. It said “Mean People Suck.” I looked at the license plate and noted that the owner of the truck was retired military. So, what do mean people have to do with job search? Everything. It is the fear of dealing with mean people, of criticism and rejection, which keeps many of us from reaching our full potential. CareerTrack, a company which has developed many outstanding business audio tape and CD sets, also offers training seminars. While working at the Richmond/Burke Job Training Authority, I had the opportunity to attend a CareerTrack Women’s Conference in Atlanta. A number of employment related subjects were covered, including an hour long segment called “How to Deal with Difficult People.” We were taught how to recognize direct and indirect bullying behaviors and the skills necessary to assertively deal with offensive people. We learned that developing these skills are of the utmost importance in the workplace and have direct impact on how we feel about ourselves and our jobs. Difficult people can be aggressive, patronizing, demeaning, judgmental, dishonest, and/or arrogant, with the intent of making us feel “less than.” Their behavior can be oppressive and victimizing. Negative body language may

8 | FYI AUGUST 2013

include scowling, frowning, or angry facial expressions, a harsh or accusing tone of voice, and raising one’s voice level. Verbal behavior may include implied accusations, which are harder to deal with than direct complaints. Finger pointing and blaming often fit in with this type of behavior. How do we respond to mean people? Sometimes we mirror the other person’s behavior, which only escalates the problem. If the person feels attacked, their behavior may become even more confrontational. For those prone to passivity, a typical response might be shock and confusion, which leads to “no response.” This can initiate retelling our story over and over again to others, which may cause long term anger and resentment for “taking it” rather than dealing with the problem in the moment. Passivity can also lead to explosive behavior down the road. So, what are the ways to deal with mean people in a respectful, professional way? Earl Suttle, a motivational speaker who has led a number of training sessions at both the Department of Labor Work Force and Southeastern Employment and Training Association (SETA) conferences suggests that when finding ourselves in a situation with a difficult person, to excuse ourselves to use the

• Why do you say that? • What happened to make you feel this way? • How would you handle it? Another way of dealing with negative people is to express your feelings about the situation. Rather than saying “You always make me feel like this,” a better way of expressing yourself is to say “I feel” attacked (feeling) “when you” second guess my intent instead of asking why I chose to use a particular method of dealing with a problem (description of other persons behavior.) Jay Carter, in his succinct book, Nasty People: How to Stop Being Hurt By Them without Becoming One of Them, states that, unfortunately, most of us are nasty people at one time or another. Remember to be mindful of your own body language and behavior towards others. In conclusion, learning to deal with mean people in a respectful, professional way is by far, one of the most important skills you can cultivate. It takes practice, practice, practice to develop the methods that lead to the best possible outcome in all situations. Keep in mind: if we change our behaviors/reactions, difficult people will be forced to change with us.

Book: American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America, 2012 Author: Michelle Obama As the lazy days of summer near their peak I thought it would be nice to share a gardening book that takes the reader through gardening tips for every season. Mrs. Obama’s first book shares anecdotes, a peek inside the White House Kitchen Garden, and delicious, healthy recipes that all are certain to enjoy. According to the book jacket, the author proceeds from this book go to the National Park Foundation for programs that promote gardening and healthy eating. The Obamas are

strong proponents for healthy diets and exercise as part of everyone’s daily life so it is good to know that the proceeds were directed to such a program. This book was easy to read and the gardening tips were simple to comprehend and implement. Keep in mind Mrs. Obama was a novice gardener so the simple tips offered have grown from things the team has learned over the years. All photographs were beautifully taken. I must highlight one of my favorite recipes from the book – white chocolate-cherry-carrot cookies. YUM!

Movies/TV: The Odd Life of Timothy Green, 2012 Actors: Jennifer Garner, Joel Edgerton Rated: PG The synopsis for this delightful Disney movie is: “When a childless couple buries a box with all of their wishes for an infant in their backyard, their wishes are granted. However, their child, Timothy Green, is not all that he appears.” There is so much more to this surprising and heart-warming movie. It was a film that demonstrated the virtue of character, the power of pure love, and the joy to be found in the simple things of life. Please don’t get me wrong when I say this but, this film was like

a modern day, less sugary Pollyanna (also by Disney). Timothy Green and Pollyanna were both strong, independent thinkers. They both encouraged others to find the best of themselves. And family was a central part of their lives. The busy days of autumn are nearly upon us so let’s take a lesson from Timothy Green and remember that all things are possible, that it’s perfectly fine to take moments to pause throughout our days, and as he says in the movie, “it’s ok to be different”. Enjoy!

moviereview Kids these days: The Bling Ring Alice Wynn, Contributing Writer

Sofia Coppola may be Francis Ford Coppola’s daughter, but that doesn’t mean she hasn’t made a name for herself in Hollywood. Her directorial debut, The Virgin Suicides (1999) based on the book by Jeffrey Eugenides, is a haunting story of a group of boys’ obsession with five sisters. Her next feature, Lost in Translation (2003), made her the youngest female to ever be nominated for a Best Director Oscar. Marie Antoinette (2006) brought modern flair to Versailles, and Somewhere (2010), perhaps lesser known than her previous work, brought her to Hollywood, examining a hard-partying actor’s relationship with his 11-year old daughter. In Coppola’s latest effort, The Bling Ring, she returns to Hollywood, but rather than focusing on the rich and famous, she gives us look into the lives of the celebrity-obsessed. Based on a Vanity Fair article “The Suspect Wore Louboutins” by Nancy Jo Sales, this film follows a group of teenagers who broke into the homes of young celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Audrina Patridge, Orlando Bloom and Lindsay Lohan, taking nearly $3 million in clothes, purses, jewelry, luggage and cash. Marc (Israel Broussard) is the new kid in school. Baby faced and a little bit pudgy, he seems an unlikely friendship choice for Rebecca (Katie Chang). But the two become BFFs, her showing Marc the world of beaches, parties and clubs. Marc becomes part of Rebecca’s clique that includes Nicki (Emma Watson), Chloe (Claire Julien) and Sam (Taissa Farmiga).

filmed these scenes in Hilton’s actual closet). When they reveal to the others about their pilfering spree, naturally the others want to tag along. Unable to keep their adventures to themselves, cash is flashed and pictures are posted on Facebook. From Hilton they move onto the homes of the others, using celebrity websites and Google to collect all the information they need. Some of their pilfered items they keep, some they sell with the help of a club owner (played with the perfect amount of sleaze by Bush front man Gavin Rossdale). They enjoy bottle service at hot clubs, go on spending sprees and generally flaunt their crimes, caught up their own world, oblivious to their crimes.

This film makes an excellent commentary on today’s celebrity-obsessed culture. Taking from others somehow makes this group feel like they are famous themselves. While being questioned, Rebecca’s only real response to her actions was when she was told the victims had been notified, “What did Lindsay say?”

It’s only when Audrina Patridge releases a security tape that airs on the local news they start to sweat. Little by little, their identities become known, and you see who cracks under pressure, and who stays cool. As they go to trial, their true colors are shown. A few protest their innocence, at the same time enjoying their time in the spotlight. The irony of the whole incident, they see themselves become semi-famous, Marc telling of his 800 Facebook friend requests.

The cast is top-notch particularly performances from Chang and Watson, channeling her best Valley accent. The film is beautifully shot and spares nothing in the portrayal of these teens, whether smoking pot or getting DUIs. Their dialogue is as empty and shallow as they are using these celebrities to fill otherwise empty holes in their own existence. Coppola has given us another top-notch film that exactly echoes the sentiment of the world that teens live in today.

All these kids seem to care about is texting and reality television. They stayed glued to their phones, and wander about with no real aims outside of attending design school where “the girls from ‘The Hills’ went” or auditioning for Axe Body Spray commercials. Their crimes thrust them in the spotlight, exactly where they felt they needed to be.

Marc is so enamored with Rebecca, he is only a bit hesitant when one night she suggests they go walk around looking for unlocked cars taking whatever they can find, be it credit cards or cocaine. Things escalate when they move on to a home of someone Marc knows is out of town, helping themselves to a large stash of cash which they promptly spend on clothes. When Marc sees on a website that Paris Hilton is hosting a party in Vegas, she tells him to see if he can find her address. A quick Google search sends them on their way. Entering her home after finding a key under the mat, the two descend upon her collection of sunglasses, bags and designer duds. (Coppola

GORDON LANES BOWLING CENTER Molly Swift, Editor

Indoor bowling has been a sport for some time; some historians believe they can trace the game of rolling balls at pins back to as long ago as 3000 B.C. But it wasn’t until the early 20th century that the game became a widely popular

and acceptable social pastime. In the 50’s the game’s popularity grew again with the onset of televised bowling – in the United States, NBC’s broadcast of Championship Bowling was the first network coverage of bowling. Thanks to the increase in exposure and the growth of bowling technology, bowling grew to become a popular activity and is now enjoyed by millions throughout the world. On post, the Gordon Lanes Bowling Center is clearly a very popular destination for the installation’s military and family members, in addition to off-post civilians who are welcome to use the facility. Manager Terry Taul is always happy to talk about how Gordon Lanes is focused on the needs of its customers – “Our mission is to take care of our Soldiers, Retirees and Families.” He and his staff do so by welcoming everyone to one of the nicest looking bowling facilities you will find anywhere; Gordon Lanes is among the cleanest, most contemporary and inviting bowling centers in the country! Terry said, “We are very fortunate to have the kind of support we have from our Family and MWR leadership and co-workers – not to mention, our customers!” Though customers come first, the equipment,

12 | FYI AUGUST 2013

interior décor and staff members also receive much attention – Terry has high praise for his employees and mentions the value of professionalism. “My staff is friendly, the place is clean and we get lots of positive comments from customers remarking on how familyoriented we are.” And the improvements they are making to the center this year are phenomenal! Not content with renovating Kegler’s Bar, Gordon Lanes hopes to add another eight lanes! The snack bar will be renovated this year, as will the restrooms. All of which are very important when running a top-notch business! It doesn’t end there – Terry told me the programs offered are central to the customer’s happiness too, “We try to have something for everyone.” And they do – to include special price offers, such as Dollar Day Mondays and Wild Wednesdays. Friday nights are Cosmic Bowling, which is when the lights go out, the lanes are lit up and the entire Center resembles a giant disco ball! To find out what’s happening at Gordon Lanes each month, check out the FYI section “This Month in MWR.” High standards certainly help set this Center apart from other recreational facilities in the area, for sure. The facility can be used for Hail

and Farewells, reunions, church parties and other group gatherings. There’s even a dedicated party room for children who want to have their birthdays at the Bowling Center – Bowlopolis parties are themed parties hosted by Gordon Lanes. The parent brings the kids and the cake, and the staff of Gordon Lanes will take care of the rest! Bowlers of all ages and abilities are welcome. Gordon Lanes can assist you no matter what your capabilities – even for someone like me, who is more of a thrower than a bowler. Need help keeping your ball in the lane? They’ve got rails to assist you and your children, and

for those seasoned enthusiasts, league play is available year round. Registration is now taking place for fall leagues and the first meeting takes place August 22. Call the Bowling Center for more information! In fact, if there is anything you wish to ask or comment upon, Terry’s happy to receive your call or email. Contact him at (706) 791-8661, (706) 831-0770, or email terry.l.taul.naf@mail.mil. Terry has one last thing to say to Fort Gordon’s service members, “We treat all of our Soldiers as little Generals. We’ll always strive to be the best we can be – it’s what makes us the number 1 bowling center in the Army!” www.fortgordonfyi.com | 13

Upcoming Shows: Social Security, by Andrew Bergman Show dates: July 19, 20, 26 & 27, August 1, 2 & 3 “Just when you were beginning to think you were never going to laugh again on Broadway, along comes Social Security...The play is a hoot, and better yet, a sophisticated, even civilized hoot.” –The New York Post Two married art dealers struggle with the visit of the wife’s goody-goody sister, her uptight CPA husband, and her archetypal Jewish Mother – who are there to try to save their college student daughter running wild… This show is full of laughs and great humor. Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Suicide Club, by Jeffrey Hatcher Show dates: September 20, 21, 27 & 28, October 10, 11 & 12 Playwright Jeffrey Hatcher takes Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous characters and drops them into a story inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella The Suicide Club to create a thrilling comic mystery. The whodunit mystery comes complete with a wow-I-didn’t-see-that-coming ending.” Arizona Daily Star “Hatcher has a winner with Sherlock Holmes. It’s intelligent, clever, teasing, seductively engaging and just plain fun.” Tucson Weekly

Miracle on South Division Street, by Tom Dudzick Show dates: November 16, 17, 22 & 23, Dec. 5, 6 & 7 Audition dates: October 7 & 8, 7 p.m. “It’s Christmas Eve, as we experience the story of the Nowak family, living amidst the urban rubble of Buffalo, NY’s East Side. Maybe the neighborhood is depressed, but not Clara, the family matriarch. She happily runs her soup kitchen and tends to the family heirloom – a 20-foot shrine to the Blessed Mother which adjoins the house. This neighborhood beacon of faith commemorates the day in 1942 when the Blessed Virgin Mary materialized in her father’s barber shop! When the play opens, a family meeting is in progress. Daughter Ruth divulges her plan to finally “go public” with the family miracle by creating a one-woman play about the sacred event. The results are heartfelt and hilarious.”
