Handel’s “Messiah.” The second half is “full of fun and frivolity” as the Augusta Choral Society undertakes some other Christmas “classics.” Stretch your holiday entertainment dollars and hum along through “Messiah” and then enjoy “The Night Before Christmas,” carol medleys, “A Musicological Journey through the 12 Days of Christmas,” and more! Movies/TV: Nothing Like the Holidays Actors: Alfred Molina, Elizabeth Peña, Freddy Rodriguez, Luis Guzmán, Jay Hernandez, John Leguizamo, Debra Messing, Vanessa Ferlito, and Melonie Diaz Director: Alfredo De Villa Year: 2008 Rating: PG-13 The Holidays are upon us. Time to curl up with hot cocoa, a quilt, and a marathon of your favorite holiday movies. After you have glued on Zuzu’s petals, washed Ralphie’s mouth out with soap, and rattled chains for Scrooge’s ghosts, join the Rodriguez family as they go on a Parranda. [FYI: Parranda is the Puerto Rican version of Christmas caroling and progressive dining. Yes, you must roll your rrr’s.] Nothing Like the Holidays is a funny, heart-warming film that follows the Rodriguez family, a Puerto Rican-American family living in Chicago. As with all
families that come together to celebrate the holidays, there are highs and lows; arguments and laughter; and understandings and misunderstandings. Unlike the food from the National Lampoons Christmas movie, all the food in this film is visually stunning and delectable. One of the special features is actually a 30 min. cooking show featuring some of the traditional foods every Puerto Rican family prepares for the holidays. Mucho gusto y Feliz Navidad.
Book: Sun Tzu: The Art of War for Managers: 50 strategic rules, updated for today’s business Author: Gerald A. Michaelson and Steven W. Michaelson, 2010 ISBN: 9781605500300 Wait! I know what you are thinking. Why is this crazy woman reviewing a management strategy book rather than a Christmas or holiday based one? Shouldn’t we read fluff, pop culture, nobrainer books if anything at all? The answer is simple; this is the perfect time to plan for your new year. Personally, I think it is always a good idea to take refreshers on leadership, management, customer service, and personal development. What better time
than while surrounded by family, away from work, and in a good mood? This should be a positive strategy for the coming year. Planning isn’t always negative. However, if you are in need of serious “strategizing” this book does break down Sun Tzu’s lessons to help you move from manager to leader and vanquish your competition! Happy hunting and, to quote The Hunger Games, “may the odds be ever in your favor.”

The Fort Gordon Dinner Theatre certainly is a surprise to many the first time they venture about on our installation. How is it a military community would support the arts? Surely there’s a catch? Compromises in set design, choreography, or talent? Less than professional productions? Poor production selection? Nope. The Fort Gordon Dinner Theatre has won multiple awards for its productions, set design, choreography, direction and more. An annual season, selected and managed by the talented Steven Walpert, consists of highly popular productions that span all genres from musicals to drama, punctuated by participation in Army Entertainment programs such as 8 | FYI December 2013
Operation Rising Star and The Soldier Show. A popular destination for the local arts community, the Fort Gordon Dinner Theatre is open to the public and welcomes volunteers. In fact, without volunteers it would be near impossible for the Theatre to operate. Auditions are held for each production and anyone is welcome to audition and participate in the production, whether as a cast member or behind the scenes. I asked director, Steve Walpert, about this awesome program and his hopes for the coming year.
When did the Dinner Theatre program come into existence and were you part of this development? The Dinner Theatre became part of the Music and Theatre program in about 1978-9; and yes, I was the first – and so far only – director of the Dinner Theatre Program. What does the Theatre offer the community? The theatre offers a well-rounded season of live theatre comedies, musicals and mysteries for both patrons and also participants onstage and off.
What about individuals who want to get involved?
Thank you Steve – is there anything you would like to add?
We are always looking for new folks to get involved. They can contact us through the box office, 706-793-8552, or email me directly at steven.r.walpert.naf@mail.mil.
I am especially proud of our Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation, Fort Gordon and the Army, who recognize the value of a program like ours. Participating in the creation of a live theatrical or musical production is an amazing opportunity to have fun while learning team-building, self esteem, public speaking, performing techniques, carpentry, and a wide variety of other skills.
You have a wonderful season lined up for the coming year! What are you most looking forward to? I am looking for what I always want when I begin a new season or production, the opportunity to create something special onstage for our patrons, with a group of enthusiastic actors, staff and crew who all share the same goal.
It also shows the community that we care about and recognize the importance of enriching Service and Family members’ lives via the Fine Arts. It’s important we are able to offer this
opportunity as part of the Military community’s overall quality of life; and it has been very forward-thinking of the Army to continue this tradition since the formulation of the U.S. Army Music and Theatre program back in the mid 1960’s. ___________________________________ For a complete listing of the upcoming 2014 season, go to www.fortgordon.com, or become a fan of the Dinner Theatre on Facebook: www.facebook.com/fortgordondinnertheatre

FORT GORDON DINNER THEATRE PRESENTS
Swap&Assist
by Tom Dudzick
December 5, 6, 7, 2013 Dinner 7:00 p.m. | Show 8:00 p.m.
It’s Christmas Eve, as we experience the story of the Nowak family, living amidst the urban rubble of Buffalo, NY’s East Side. Maybe the neighborhood is depressed, but not Clara, the family matriarch. She happily runs her soup kitchen and tends to the family heirloom – a twenty-foot shrine to the Blessed Mother which adjoins the house. This neighborhood beacon of faith commemorates the day in 1942 when the Blessed Virgin Mary materialized in her father’s barber shop! When the play opens, a family meeting is in progress. Daughter Ruth the family miracle by creating a one-woman play about the sacred event. The results are heartfelt and hilarious.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year Well, we blinked, and now December is here once more; time for trees and red bows and multicolored lights, spiked hot chocolate, stockings hung by the chimney with care and all that fun stuff. Whatever your holiday traditions are, you might want to find time to squeeze in one of these flicks. It takes the pressure off of worrying about your turkey and whether or not your father-in-law will like the tie you bought him. While some of these movies I’m suggesting may not necessarily fall under what would be considered “traditional” holiday fare (I’ll leave that to the Hallmark channel and the constant loop of A Christmas Story), in the grand scheme of things, they have something to do with Christmas. G o – Te l l i n g t h r e e intertwined stories about a Christmas Eve drug deal, director Doug Liman gives a non-stop ride through LA (and Vegas) with some terrific performances from the likes of Taye Diggs, Sarah Polley and Timothy Olyphant. Keep an eye out for a pre-Bridesmaids Melissa McCarthy as well.
Gremlins – Sure, everyone knows the story of the Mogwai and what happens when you feed him after midnight. But when the Gremlins take over the town of Kingston Falls, it’s easy to forget that the movie actually takes place, you know, at Christmas. It’s also easy to forget that, despite the destructive nature of those little buggers, they actually have some pretty hilarious scenes.
About a Boy – Hugh Grant is the eternal bachelor, not doing much except hanging around his fabulous flat, living off of royalties from a Christmas song his father wrote. When a weird kid with a suicidal mother comes into his life, he learns that every man is, in fact, not an island.
Bad Santa – This is the one film I make it a point to watch every Christmas. Billy Bob Thornton is hilarious as a rude, crude, hard-drinking department store Santa who has plans with his elf for a major Christmas Eve heist. But when he meets a pitiful little boy who believes he’s the real Santa, he may change his view on things.
Die Hard – The film that made Bruce Willis a bona fide action star is another one that’s easy to forget takes place during the Christmas season. John McClane just wants to save his wife when her office building is under siege by the deliciously evil Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman). Yippie ki-yay.
Catch Me if You Can – Leonardo Di Caprio and Tom Hanks play cat and mouse in Steven Spielberg’s often-overlooked true tale of con man Frank Abagnale Jr. who posed as an airplane pilot, emergency-room doctor and lawyer all before turning 19.
The Nightmare Before Christmas – Sure, this can be a Halloween movie as well, depending on how you look at it. Jack Skellington tries to bring Christmas to his land of Halloweentown with some spooky results. Tim Burton shows us a true masterpiece and no, it’s not just for kids who shop at Hot Topic.
Love Actually – With a plethora of A-list actors including Liam Neeson, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Kiera Knightley, Colin Firth and that guy from the Walking Dead, this film is a must for the holiday. The romantic lives of interconnected Londoners show us the ups and downs of relationships from new marriages to unrequited love. The true highlight of this film, though, is Bill Nighy as a past-his-prime rocker.
When Harry Met Sally – I recently had a conversation with someone about whether or not this film counts as a holiday movie. My friend said no; I disagreed. The ultimate in romantic comedies, there are a number of scenes that take place during the holidays which, in turn, makes it perfect for viewing this time of year.
Home Alone – A given for the holiday season, Kevin McCallister (Macauley Culkin) and his hijinks are par for the course for one of the ultimate Christmas movies and shows us what Christmas is really all about. Also, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, because, why not? New York is a magical place during the holiday season and this time, we see it through Kevin’s eyes.
Metropolitan – Whit Stillman’s talk-fest follows a group of upper-crust Manhattanites during the holiday season as they attend a variety of balls and parties. Featuring a cast of unknowns, Stillman gives us some of the best dialogue ever written for the screen and offers a glimpse onto the lives of the young and privileged.
A Charlie Brown Christmas – Because it just doesn’t seem like Christmas without it. Happy holidays, everyone!

Wrapping up the Year
with Family and MWR
M olly Swif t, Edi t or
During December we often take a moment to reflect on the accomplishments and events of the 11 months we’ve just survived. Let’s take it up a notch and celebrate the times we had together!
Spring Fest joins forces with the Military Child
2013 was the first time these two major events were combined to bring Fort Gordon an entire weekend of spring celebrations! Thousands joined us to enjoy Spring Fest’s wonderful mix of local music, vendors, sponsors and the carnival. The Month of the Military Child, celebrated in April of each year, emphasizes how vital our military children are to the Army Family – what better way to honor them than with their own festival? Family and MWR provided free food, carnival rides and activities to Fort Gordon’s military children on the Saturday of Spring Fest and the result was oodles of smiles!
Hooking a Soldier on Golf
Gordon Lakes PGA instructor, Dallas Cooke has described delivering this program as “an honor”; we describe it as a huge success! Gordon Lakes Golf Club – which is open to the public – offered free hour-long golf instruction for our Service Members every Saturday morning from March until September. All lessons were offered free of charge and the necessary golf clubs and balls were also provided. The succes of the program means it is anticipated to return in March of 2014.
The Dinner Theatre went Blonde
A surprise selection from the Fort Gordon Dinner Theatre, Legally Blonde, The Musical, took to the stage in March to rave reviews! Not only was the score impressive, but the dancing and choreography were off the charts! Director, Steve Walpert, and his incredible crew put on a top-notch performance that blew the audience away. According to those who were lucky enough to catch it, as well as many Facebook fans, if ever there was a reason to go to the theater, this was it.
We Were Moved by Morale Call
This was the year Morale Call kicked off on a Friday and at a different location. The change, supported by Fort Gordon’s Command, saw Morale Call move back to The Courtyard, sparking off even more line dancing and even more chances to watch some regulars (Frank!) shake their stuff on the dance floor! DJ Tony Howard kept the tunes coming while free food was on offer from some of our amazing sponsors.
Cirque du Soleil Visits CYSS
The circus was in town, but not just any circus! The Cirque Du Soleil – an award-winning combination of circus arts and street entertainment – was in Augusta to perform its show, Quidam. Children from Fort Gordon’s Child, Youth and School Services (CYSS) were treated to a rare clinic delivered by Adrienn Banhegyi. A jump rope pro and world record holder, Adrienn got the kids – and some parents – to join in the jumping before wowing us further with some freestyle jump rope. The FYI was on hand to capture her incredible display of talent – check out our feature on FYI+! Search: “Cirque du Soleil” on www.fortgordonfyi.com

Aquatics – More to do at the Pool
If you’ve been here for any amount of time, you’ll know Georgia can be rather steamy during the long, hot summer months. The heat makes sparkling blue pools, relaxing lounging decks and cooling spray parks all the more appealing, so thank goodness we have the best pools around! In 2013 the talented individuals at Aquatics brought us movies at the pool, a water safety program, aqua sculpt classes and more! Be sure to keep an eye on this department as we venture into another steamy spring/summer/ fall in the South.
A Rocking Independence Day!
To say this year was challenging is perhaps a bit of an understatement, but we rallied together to honor our Nation and celebrate our freedom on Barton Field, July 3. Not only did the rain hold off, but record crowds came out decked in their red, white and blue to hear live music, hang out with friends and family, and enjoy some yummy food! Thank you again to all who joined us to say “happy birthday, U.S.A.” and especially all you who shared your photos and videos with us on Facebook!
Gordon Lanes Beats the Heat
The best bowling center in the Army, Gordon Lanes had a sizzling hot year, delivering a plethora of special events and special prices. The center also ramped up its bar, Kegler’s Sports Bar, adding marble counter tops, new siding, lighting and new covers on its pool tables – a vital necessity for all us sharks! Be sure to head over to Gordon Lanes not just for your own special events, but for pizza bowls, cosmic bowling, NFL nights and all your sports viewing too!
ACS brings Christmas to Fort Gordon
We are always happy to see what Army Community Service brings to Fort Gordon – Military Spouse Appreciation Days are sooo much fun! - but Christmas is when they really take it up a notch. Christmas House has provided much needed support for Fort Gordon families during the holiday season for many years and 2013 was no exception. Volunteers put in thousands of hours to stock and staff the House which gives families the chance to give presents to their family members.
A Special “ T h a n k Y o u ”
to our Family and MWR Supporters
Anna Gaillard, Corporate Sponsorship & Sales Manager
The Sponsorship and Advertising office of Fort Gordon Family and MWR would like to send a special thank you greeting to all of our supporting partners. All sponsorship and advertising funds received stay within our military community to support events and facilities. As a community partner with Fort Gordon, your support of our events, and the advertising you conduct on our installation, is vital to the overall well-being of our service members and their families.

Survivors become Fast Friends Karen J. Lewis, LPC, SOS Support Specialist
Jasmine McCoy (10) and Caitlyn Burner (10) had never met until camp this past summer. While introducing themselves and talking, the two young campers discovered they attended the same school (Cedar Ridge Elementary), knew the same teachers, and lived in the same city. This was a huge surprise to both of the girls considering the fact that the camp they were attending was in Nashville, Tennessee. Both girls share an unfortunate experience that most kids their age could not begin to understand; they are both survivor children of deceased active duty military service members. Jasmine keeps her great personality and beautiful smile intact despite the loss of her mother, LTC Monique Glasford McCoy, in May of 2012. Caitlyn has a great personality and is super friendly to others despite the loss of her father SGT John F. Burner III in September 2010. Caitlyn and Jasmine are two of the Army’s many child survivors who have lost a parent serving on active duty. They are both enrolled in a great foundation – A Soldier’s Child. A Soldier’s Child was founded by Executive Director Daryl Mackin. Mackin’s 14 | FYI December 2013
motivation for the foundation was sparked when planning a birthday party for his son and thinking about the son of a family friend, who left a child behind when he was killed in action. Daryl chose to honor the memory of deceased active duty military parents (of all branches of service) by starting an organization that focused on giving a meaningful gift to these children on their birthday every year until they become an adult. Through this foundation, Caitlyn and Jasmine as well as Caitlyn’s older sister Celina Burner (13) had the opportunity to attend the weeklong Journey Camp, along with 31 other survivor campers, at Camp Widjiwagon in Nashville, Tennessee where they became fast friends. Both loved the experience and shared a little about what they liked best; Jasmine said “The Banana Boat” - a large float shaped like a banana used for tubing - “was my favorite water activity and horseback riding was my favorite land activity.” Caitlyn enjoyed swimming and the mini golf tournament, and “They had really good food and I always ate a salad with dinner.” Her favorite part of camp was participating in the Talent Show.
Caitlyn and Jasmine both agreed that having camp mentors that understood what happened in their lives was awesome. The Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) campers participated in Back Porch Devotion (kids support group for one and another) at the Journey Cabin, which allowed them to talk about their deceased parent with other kids their age who understand the feelings related to losing a parent. Jasmine thinks of her mom often and although she is very sad her mom is no longer with her, the happy memories bring a smile to her face. Caitlyn see’s her dad as a bright star and when she saw one in the sky while at camp she wrote in her letter to her mom, “I saw dad tonight”. Camp Widjiwagon offered Jasmine and Caitlyn many new and fun experiences and both girls can’t wait to go back next year. Meeting each other at camp this year and remaining friends is truly priceless.

Upcoming SHOWS: Lend Me a Tenor, by Ken Ludwig
Auditions: December 2, 3, 2013, 8 p.m., parts for 3 M 3 W Show Dates: February 21, 22, 28, and March 1, 13, 14 and 15 Winner! 3 Tony Awards and 4 Drama Desk Awards Nominee! 2010 Tony Award, Best Revival of a Play Lend Me a Tenor is set in September 1934. Saunders, the general manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, is primed to welcome world famous, Tito Morelli, Il Stupendo, the greatest tenor of his generation, to appear for one night only as Otello. The star arrives late and, through a hilarious series of mishaps, is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he’s dead. In a frantic attempt to salvage the evening, Saunders persuades Max to get into Morelli’s Otello costume and fool the audience into thinking he’s Il Stupendo. Max succeeds admirably, but Morelli comes to and gets into his other costume ready to perform. Now two Otellos are running around in costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo. A sensation on Broadway and in London’s West End, this madcap, screwball comedy is guaranteed to leave audiences teary-eyed with laughter.
its characters. “Harling has given his women sharp, funny dialogue…The play builds to a conclusion that is deeply moving.” — NY Daily News. “…a skillfully crafted, lovingly evoked picture of eccentricity in the small-town South…Robert Harling is a new voice in the theatre and the qualities of Steel Magnolias suggest he may be an important one.” — Drama-Logue. “…suffused with humor and tinged with tragedy.” — NY Post.
The Hollow, by Agatha Christie Auditions: July 21 and 22 Show Dates: September 12, 13, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27
“One of two great farces by a living writer.” - The New York Times
An unhappy game of romantic follow-the-leader explodes into murder one weekend at The Hollow, home of Sir Henry and Lucy Angkatell. Dr. Cristow is at the center of the trouble when his mistress Henrietta, ex-mistress Veronica, and wife Gerda, simultaneously arrive at The Hollow. Also visiting are Edward (who is in love with Henrietta) and Midge (who loves Edward). Veronica ardently desires to marry Cristow and succeeds in reopening their affair but is unable to get him to divorce his wife. Veronica unwisely states that if she cannot have him, no one shall. Within five minutes Cristow is dead. Nearly everyone has a motive and most had the opportunity. Enter Inspector Colquhoun and Sergeant Penny to solve the crime.
Never Too Late, written by Sumner Arthur Long
“As good a stage whodunit as we have had for some time.” — London Observer
Auditions: February 24, 25, 2014, parts for 6 M 3 W Show Dates: May 2, 3, 9, 10, 15, 16 and 17 This Broadway hit is about a married man in his fifties who suddenly learns he’s becoming a father again. His last child, a girl, was born 24 years ago and, considering the boob she married, he finds the prospect of another unthinkable. His daughter and son-in-law live with him; she gets up for breakfast at lunchtime and he is curiously addicted to solitaire. It’s not only the impending birth that startles him; his previously meek little wife begins to lay down the law. There’s to be a nursery, a new bath, and she’s to have her own checking account. Such dour capitulation you’ll never see again. “Good old fashioned domestic farce... with lots and lots of laughter.” - New York Daily News
Steel Magnolias, by Robert Harling
Auditions: May 20, 21. Parts for 6 women Show Dates: July 18, 19, 25, 26, 31, and August 1 and 2 A first play which met with immediate critical and popular acceptance in its premier production by New York’s WPA Theatre. Concerned with a group of gossipy southern ladies in a small-town beauty parlor, the play is alternately hilarious and touching—and, in the end, deeply revealing of the strength and purposefulness which underlies the antic banter of
The Perfect Wedding, by Robin Hawdon
Auditions: September 16, 17 Parts for: 4 W, 2 M Show Dates: November, 14, 15, 21, 22, and December 4, 5 and 6 An appalling situation. A bridegroom wakes on his wedding morning in his own bridal suite, with his bride-to-be about to arrive any moment, and finds a strange girl in bed beside him. What’s more an extremely attractive girl whom, in the depths of his post stag-night hangover, he can’t remotely remember even having been introduced to. Worse - during the ensuing panic to get the stranger dressed and out of the way, the bride arrives and the girl is trapped in the bathroom. The only way out of the dilemma is to persuade the best man to pretend that the hidden girl is his girl friend. Then the problem is that the best man’s real girl friend has to be kept ignorant of the fact. By the time the bride’s parents and half the hotel staff get in on the act, the chaos reaches nuclear proportions! The play has provoked waves of laughter in literally hundreds of productions around Europe and across America, and is due to be made into a Hollywood film. It is that rare combination - a riotous comedy and a touching love story at the same time. “Laughs abound in the American premiere...It all works out in the end, but not before playgoers have aching sides.” — Wisconsin Advocate www.fortgordonfyi.com | 21
