from the Cover Domestic abuse is a costly and selfish horror. It robs the victim of their security and their confidence – sometimes it robs them of their life. During the month of October, we want to spread the word that Domestic abuse and violence is not okay. We all have the power to stop the abuse - let us all use our hands to prevent this tragedy, not perpetuate it. A FORT GORDON FAMILY AND MWR PUBLICATION

Book: Adulting, How to become a grown-up in 468 easy(ish) steps. 2013 Author: Kelly Williams Brown ISBN: 9781455516902 The library recently acquired a new book that, by the sheer force of its title, attracted my curiosity. To be honest, I am a sucker for the word modifier “ish”. Even though I am a “seasoned” adult I was curious as to what useful information could possibly be in this book. After all we all have life skills knowledge gaps. Adulting is a must-read for anyone in their twenties! The author has written an incredibly helpful how-to geared toward twentysomethings who may be grown up but don’t always feel like it. Her

conversational style of writing made each step simple to understand. The doodles scattered throughout the book also provided amusement. Be forewarned, she tends to favor the F-Bomb. I won’t spoil the surprise of the 468 easy(ish) steps that help anyone become a grown-up. I will say that they are useful, cleverly wrapped into peer-to-peer conversations, full of anecdotes, and just fun. Read it for yourself and let me know what you think!

Movies/TV: Dark shadows Actors: Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer Director: Tim Burton Year: 2012 Dark Shadows is a feature film remake of an American gothic vampire soap opera that originally aired on ABC from 1966 through 1971. It is important to understand that the 1970’s vibe and off-kilter melodrama in the film was intentional. It paid homage to the original series. At its essence, the synopsis is as follows: “Imprisoned vampire Barnabas Collins is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better and are in need of his protection.”

At its core, this film is a quintessential Tim Burton/Johnny Depp collaboration. I am a huge fan of all their joint ventures. However, I must say that Tim Burton is a badly coifed genius! His quirky gothic translation of Americana is fascinating, fun to explore, and brilliantly directed. Jack the Pumpkin King and Sally are like close friends. Beetlejuice is that uncle that shows up uninvited to events. And the Mad Hatter and I routinely meet for tea or to dance the “Futterwack”. If you have never watched a Tim Burton film or happened to miss some, stop by the library. We have many available for checkout. Word of caution…. Do not use Sweeny Todd for your barber!

Books, movies, CDs and more are available for free check-out to Service Members & DOD Civilians at Woodworth Consolidated Library, 549 Rice Road, Building 33500, Fort Gordon, GA 30905 | For more information, call: (706) 791-7323 or visit our website at www.gordon.army.mil/library

END DOMESTIC VIOLENCE RECOGNIZE IT - REPORT IT - PREVENT IT

Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior perpetrated by an intimate partner against another. It is an epidemic affecting individuals in every community, regardless of age, economic status, race, religion, nationality or educational background. Violence against women is often accompanied by emotionally abusive and controlling behavior, and thus is part of a systematic pattern of dominance and control. Domestic violence results in physical injury, psychological trauma, and sometimes death. The consequences of domestic violence can cross generations and truly last a lifetime. (www.ncadv.org)

In October of each year, Army communities review their commitment to prevent domestic violence. Educational efforts are renewed, and campaigns roll out to inform the Army community about the variety of ways to strengthen Families and prevent the abuse that has the potential to affect women and men from childhood to their elder years. This year is no different – the long-term effects of domestic violence, as well as the short-term and immediate suffering, still afflicts thousands

each year. You may wonder why such a personal issue would become a focus for an organization such as the U.S. Army – quite simply put; the strength of the Army relies heavily on the strength of its Army Families. By using the resources provided to include educational resources and counseling services, we lessen the impact caused by domestic violence; fewer situations develop to the point of critical; and relationships are more mature, healthy and supportive.

Utilizing available resources often depends on a Family’s willingness to examine their beliefs about their respective roles in the Family, their commitment to save their relationship, an acceptance of their responsibility to provide a happy and safe childhood for their children, and a willingness to work within the limitations imposed by their physical and mental health status (Garcia, Finley, Lorber, & Jakupcak, 2011; Schonbrun, Strong, Wetle, & Stuart, 2011).

Here are some facts about Domestic Violence as provided by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence:

Red Ribbon Week

Michael Reed, SAPP Coordinator

Promoting drug awareness and preventing illegal drug use among service members and their families is the aim of the Red Ribbon Week, conducted each year during October. The campaign will be celebrated on Fort Gordon October 23-31. During this period, educational displays providing alcohol and drug awareness material will be placed at Darling Hall, DDEAMC, the main PX and the Commissary for Soldiers, Family Members and DOD civilians. The campaign originated in response to the murder of Drug Enforcement Agent Kiki Camarena in 1985 by drug dealers in Mexico. Growing up in a dirt-floored house in Mexico, Enrique Camarena wanted to make a difference. When he was little, he begged his mother for a toy gun. “I need a gun,” he said, “because I’m going to be a policeman when I grow up.” At age nine, Kiki moved with his family to the United States to pick fruit.

Registration: 7:15 a.m. Opening Ceremony: 8:00 a.m. Agent Kiki Camarena

In early 1985, the DEA sent Kiki to work undercover in Mexico. For weeks he lived among the drug cartel, gathering information and evidence. He was ready to wrap up his assignment when his identity was discovered. He was kidnapped and tortured to death.

After excelling in high school, Kiki faced a critical turning point. His friends were headed for trouble, and he had to decide whether he wanted to follow them into a life of crime and drugs. The deeply engrained desire to make a difference won out, and Kiki opted to stay straight, working his way through college and earning a degree in criminal justice.

To honor his memory, and to show that they would continue his fight against illegal drugs, friends and neighbors wore red satin badges. Parents who had come together in local coalitions to fight the drug problem took Kiki as their model; embracing his belief that one person can make a difference, and adopting his symbol – the red ribbon – as their own. From this grassroots beginning grew National Family Partnership, a network of community groups united under one mission: to promote healthy, drug-free youth through prevention and education.

Following stints in the Marines and the police force, Kiki joined the DEA. It was the best way he knew to stop drugs and to help people he cared about. His mother, concerned about dangers inherent in his job, tried to talk him out of it. “I can’t not do this,” he told her. “I’m only one person, but I want to make a difference.”

Red Ribbon week material will also be provided to Fort Gordon units, Freedom Park Elementary School and directorates via distribution. Activities will take place daily at the school during the week. POC for Red Ribbon Week activities is Michael Reed, Fort Gordon Army Substance Abuse Program Prevention Coordinator, 706-791-5797.

bite-sizedfitness Randy Behr, Contributing Writer

Working Out at the Office How can I stay in shape if I don’t have time, money or a membership? First, I would like to start off by saying none of the above have to limit one’s ability to get in shape. What is required is a will and desire to improve your well-being. Next, I want to focus on a professional office setting. It is understandable that being able to accomplish this schedule with consistency due to lunch breaks and other distractions may be difficult. But not impossible.

So, here we go: Body-Weight Squat Every hour stand up from your chair and do a body-weight squat and wall-push up for starters. Both of these exercises are executed just like they sound. A body-weight squat begins with a slightly wider than shoulder width stance (toes slightly pointed outward) and arms at ones side with an erect stance. Then, push-back your hips and butt while lowering yourself to a painless and comfortable position approximately 90 degrees formed from your hips and thigh while simultaneously raising your arms to shoulder level. Pause (1 second) at the bottom and return to the starting position by pushing through the entire surface area of your foot (focus on pushing through the middle of the foot to obtain this) and thrusting your hips forward as you rise from this position. The ending position will be your arms at your side. You have now completed one repetition and repeat to the desired number.

Wall-Push Up Immediately, with no rest, walk to a stable wall and place your hands palms down against the wall with fingers spread and chest level in a locked position. The same position that would take place if one was lying on the floor. Next, walk your feet away from the wall approximately two to three feet away (the farther the feet are away from the wall the more resistance). Now, lower yourself to the wall and return to the starting position and complete 10 repetitions.

Coach tip: Your entire body, from your ankles up, should be flat as possible while tightening your core.

This workout could be utilized by a beginner to an intermediate individual. However, if one is more advanced and looking for something more intense try to increase the number of push-ups and squats from 10 to 20 or more per hour. Some people may ask, what about sit-ups and crunches? Two very efficient and effective ‘core’ exercises are squats and push-ups. Next and probably the most challenging will be to accomplish the cardiovascular activity. Not because it is impossible, but due to an office individual’s work attire, complications of perspiring too much are unappealing. This doesn’t mean it can’t be accomplished though. Hopefully, one can switch shoes and either walk/run up the buildings stairs a few times for a short interval session. 1-2 short increments are very effective. This will round out the resistance training with aerobic training. By the end of a work day one could conceivable rack up 70 to a couple of hundred wall pushups and body-weight squats. Not bad, for one day’s work. So, remember it doesn’t take ‘fancy’ equipment and fitness facilities or an abundance of time, but it does take a little initiative, creativity and motivation!

18 | FYI October OCTOBER 2013 2013

• The quantity of prescription painkillers sold to pharmacies, hospitals, and doctors’ offices was 4 times larger in 2010 than in 1999. • Many states report problems with “pill mills” where doctors prescribe large quantities of painkillers to people who don’t need them medically. Some people also obtain prescriptions from multiple prescribers by “doctor shopping.” • According to the 2011 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), twice as many Americans regularly abused prescription drugs than the number of those who regularly used cocaine, hallucinogens, heroin, and inhalants combined. Fort Gordon will again participate in another National Take-Back initiative on October 26 as a means to address the issue of prescription drug abuse. This is a great opportunity for those who have accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of them. Upcoming SHOWS: Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Suicide Club, by Jeffrey Hatcher Show dates: October 10, 11 & 12

Announcing our 2014 Major Musical! Follies, Book by James Goldman, music and lyrics by

Playwright Jeffrey Hatcher takes Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous characters and drops them into a story inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella The Suicide Club to create a thrilling comic mystery. The whodunit mystery comes complete with a wow-I-didn’tsee-that-coming ending.” Arizona Daily Star “Hatcher has a winner with Sherlock Holmes. It’s intelligent, clever, teasing, seductively engaging and just plain fun.” Tucson Weekly

Miracle on South Division Street, by Tom Dudzick

Show dates: November 16, 17, 22 & 23, December 5, 6 & 7, 2013 Audition dates: October 7 & 8, 7 p.m. “It’s Christmas Eve, as we experience the story of the Nowak family, living amidst the urban rubble of Buffalo, NY’s East Side. Maybe the neighborhood is depressed, but not Clara, the family matriarch. She happily runs her soup kitchen and tends to the family heirloom – a 20-foot shrine to the Blessed Mother which adjoins the house. This neighborhood beacon of faith commemorates the day in 1942 when the Blessed Virgin Mary materialized in her father’s barber shop! When the play opens, a family meeting is in progress. Daughter Ruth divulges her plan to finally “go public” with the family miracle by creating a one-woman play about the sacred event. The results are heartfelt and hilarious.”

Stephen Sondheim Show dates: March 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 & 22, 2014 In FOLLIES the time is 1971, and theatrical impresario Dimitri Weissmann hosts a reunion of ex-Follies performers in his crumbling theatre, setting the stage for a parade of brilliant pastiche numbers, including “Losing My Mind,” “I’m Still Here,” and “Broadway Baby.” Amid the reminiscing, two middle-aged couples confront some unpleasant truths about their past and present and come face to face with the future. Surreal, sophisticated, compelling, heart-wrenching and epic in scope, FOLLIES uses the musical theatre as a metaphor for the collapse of American innocence and naivete in the post-Kennedy years. It is a showcase for powerful dramatic actors, featuring a large cast rich in character, which provides opportunities for seasoned older performers. Spectacular and grand in scale, FOLLIES is a must see production!
