STAYCATIONING The MWR Way!

Crystal Tyson, Editor

Over 55% of Americans will travel this summer – a number gradually decreasing in the next few years. When surveyed, most Americans wanted to bypass the hustle and bustle of airports, train stations and bus accidents on the road to their destination! Many suggested different staycations (also known as holistays) – a period in which an individual or family stays home and participates in leisure activities within driving distance, sleeping in their own beds at night. There are many advantages to staycationing to include saving money on hotel stays and discovering new places in what may be a familiar area. So why not indulge in a good ol’ fashioned MWR StayCation? All the perks of a staycation with an MWR flair! Here are some of the best staycation options coming up with the Fort Gordon Community: SPECIAL EVENTS Special events happen all year round! Bring the entire family out to Christmas in July and get a jump start on your holiday shopping. This new event, featuring dozens of direct sales and craft vendors, has something for everyone on your list. Don’t miss the food, giveaways and fun with Santa and Mrs. Claus on Saturday, July 15th, from 10am2pm at Nelson Fitness Center. Mark your calendars for the Fall Festival, September 28th through October 1st. Although the name has changed, we offer the same great event. Previously known as Oktoberfest, Fall Festival brings you a carnival atmosphere with amazing food options and entertainment. We will continue the Oktoberfest theme Friday night, bringing lots of culture to this event. Call 706-7918878 for more info. 6 | FYI SUMMER 2017

GORDON LANES BOWLING CENTER (GLBC) Want to learn a new hobby? Want to be part of a team? Need a relaxing environment? All this and more can be found at Gordon Lanes Bowling Center. There are Summer and Fall leagues as well as children leagues. Pizza Bowl is offered quarterly, Morale Call once a month and Karaoke every Friday in Heroes Sports Bar (located within GLBC). These are only a few of the many different activities happening in GLBC. Heroes Sports Bar has professional sports of all kinds playing on the big screens weekly; with great beverages, food and customer service. The same is offered at Kegler’s Cafe. One of the best deals going this summer, however, has to be the FREE bowling offered to children 3-15. Find out more at www.fortgordon.com/gordon-lanes or call 706-791-3446. POINTES WEST ARMY RESORT (PWAR) Family Fun Day is August 5th at Pointes West beginning at noon. This is a great chance to have fun with the family, win prizes, listen to great music, and swim or boat. Movie on the Beach is September 23rd which includes a newly released Rated-G movie to watch while snacking on s’mores. PWAR offers hotels, camping grounds, hiking trails and so much more. Discover for yourself why PWAR is the place to be all year long! Visit www.fortgordon.com/ pointes-west to find out more! In the past, getting onto the installation had proven to be difficult. If you do not have a CAC or dependent ID, you may want to take the time to get your AIE (Automated Installation Entry) card. This will assist you on entering Fort Gordon. This one year pass grants access to many of the above mentioned facilities as well as much more. For more info on the AIE card, see our ad on page 13 or visit www.fortgordon.com/aie.

TEEN TALK

INTRODUCTION

Samhari Stanley, Marketing Intern

College can be many things. It sometimes has the reputation of being an institution filled with sleepless (highly-caffeinated) nights, intoxicating parties, and people going to class in their pajamas. While this isn't always the case, college is an institution of higher learning which, if utilized properly, can change your life! In this College Life Series, different

"...college gives the prospective of getting a well-paying job – the RIGHT job" topics will be presented to prepare you for college, such as how to choose the best college for yourself, how to find and apply for scholarships, what to take from home and making college the best life experience possible. 10 | FYI SUMMER 2017

To kick off this series, I’ll give three reasons to seek out a college education. The first of which is college can help you achieve greater goals for yourself. As a high school student, you're taught college gives the prospective of getting a well-paying job – the RIGHT job. Getting the right job can ultimately afford you with an ideal lifestyle for not only yourself, but your family. You learn to be self-sufficient during college. Critical decisions are made everyday like "Should I make it to class today?" or "To be or not to get a B in this English course – that is the question". It’s true, there is no hand-holding in higher education, but there are resources available to help ease the transition and to help you stay on track. This is a life-long lesson that will be valuable through the test of times. Most importantly, college is an amazing time

"Classes will challenge your intellectual and analytical mind and expose you to varying perspectives."

for exploration. In the years you work towards a degree, you learn a lot about yourself and hopefully the world around you. There are many opportunities available to help delve deeper into your interests and career goals, while also being able to support the local community; such as volunteering. Picking the best college for yourself can be difficult. Does anyone really know, without a shadow of a doubt, what they want to be when they grow up as a freshman in college? When thinking of the best college for yourself, make sure you do as much research on different universities as possible. Consider your level of comfort being away from home and sometimes family. Also consider your finances, hobbies, and the environment around campus. Does the college offer your major and minor? Have you taken

courses in high school that will transfer? Can you see yourself at that college for four-plus years? Learn how to make your own "Operation Plan" (OPLAN) for higher education.

"You learn to be self-sufficient during college. Critical decisions are made everyday." Throughout this series of learning the different aspects of college, remember it is a journey. Your experience will not look like the next person’s and there will be times of confusion and frustration. However, if you accomplish at least some of the goals you set out to complete, your degree or coursework will be worth it in the end. Stay tuned for more from this College Life Series.
