FACILITY FOCUS Auto Skills Center Micole Stokes, Editor
Self Service, Parts & Sales
For years Gordon’s Car Care has provided amazing customer service and excellent auto care to the Fort Gordon Community.
Gordon’s Car Care has 36 bays for auto repair and do-it-yourself services, with a larger variety of state-of-the-art equipment available. The Self Service side is there for more than just passing out tools. Trained staff members will answer questions on technical issues and guide you through your self-service project. Mr. Barry, who has been with Gordon’s Car Care for 30 years, is very experienced in assisting customers as they work on their own vehicles and is always willing to share his knowledge on how to get a job done.
It is the mission of Gordon’s Car Care to provide quality, reasonably priced Auto Skills programs at first-class service to Fort Gordon’s Service Members, Active-Duty Reservists and National Guardsmen, Family Members and Civilian employees. With Full Service services provided by ASE technicians, Gordon’s Car Care also offers a Self-Help area, Parts & Sales, a 24-hour access storage facility, vehicle re-sale lot, and a storage lot for cars, trucks, trailers, boats, campers and more. Full Service Gordon’s Car Care Full Service is staffed with experienced mechanics, including two Master Technicians able to do regular maintenance and repair work for most vehicles. Technicians are available to explain repairs and services required to assist customers in understanding their vehicle better. Fort Gordon has one of the finest automotive centers in the Army and offers car and light truck repairs, plus alignment on most cars. The auto technicians of Gordon’s Car Care offer friendly service, competitive prices and deeper insight to your automotive needs. Other services offered include oil changes, brake repair, suspension work and more.
8 | FYI WINTER 2015
Before you begin to use your acquired auto skills in the self-service area to repair and enhance your automobile you must pass a safety orientation – classes are held weekly. Shop Certification Class needed before using Self Help. Classes are offered Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. The experience continues from there as Gordon’s Car Care provides lifts for different vehicles from coupes to dump trucks. Work like a professional technician and rent one of the 36 available bay areas, lifts and tools to complete your automotive repairs. While tools can be rented per request, Gordon’s Car Care has a sales section that includes many basic auto supplies for repairs and maintenance. It is always the goal of Gordon’s Car Care that customers are comfortable with auto work, whether full service or self help, and are able to offer those services at a fair price.
WINTERIZE YOUR CAR Climate changes don’t affect just you – they also affect your car. Master Technicians Tim Gunn and Darrell Pellman advise the five following tips for winterizing your car! Just because we are not in the northern states doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make sure your car is ready for winter. 1. Check the heart of your car, its battery! The capacity of your battery is reduced by cold weather. It is always smart to check your battery, cables, terminal and fluids prior to cold snaps. Make sure there are no cracks or breaks in the battery cables and the terminals fit tightly. Checking the battery fluid, when possible, is suggested. Always know the manufacture date of your battery, and if it’s time to start looking at replacing it. A battery that is older is more likely to die during the winter months. This is the heart of your car, take care of it! 2. Check the hydration and electrolytes of your car, the coolant fluid! The coolant in your vehicle is vital during the winter months. This fluid will protect your engine against corrosion. Making sure your coolant has ethylene glycol is a good idea. Verify with your owner manual the ratio amount of water to coolant fluid for the winter months before adding water or coolant fluid. Water is always a vital part of health to your car, but it must be the right amount! 3. Do a blood test for your car by checking the oil! The weather temperature outside will greatly affect the internal temperature of your engine. Luckily, we don’t get long snaps of below freezing at Fort Gordon, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make sure you are using the correct oil for your car in winter months, and make sure that you have the proper amount! The oil is the blood of your engine and it’s vital that it’s maintained properly. 4. Do a vision test by checking the wipers and fluid. We can’t drive properly without vision, so the wipers and wiper fluid are extremely important for your safety! Be sure to fill any cracks or chips in your car windshield to prevent further damage. Make sure your wipers are in good repair during freezing temps. Be sure to pull them away from your windshield when you park. For the best wiper fluid during the winter months, be sure to select a fluid that will not freeze. Check the wipers frequently during the winter months as ice and cold weather can cause damage quickly, even to good wipers! You can’t see if you don’t have clear vision! 5. Make sure your feet are going to carry you far by checking those tires! Luckily, snow tires are really not needed in our area. But good tires are always a must, especially during the winter months. Check the air pressure in your tires and verify in your owner’s manual that your tires are properly inflated! Deflated tires are very dangerous in icy conditions. Keep a tire gauge in your car and make sure you check your pressure regularly. Also, make sure your tires have good tread on them. Worn or balding tires need to be replaced prior to any ice or snow that may occur.
