Fytogreens Roof Garden Journey “CONCEPT TO DELIVERY”
Extensive and semi-extensive roof gardens have a thin growing medium <200mm deep, planted with predominantly native vegetation. Fytogreen installs sub-surface irrigation and typically our extensive roof gardens require minimal maintenance. Intensive roof gardens are heavier than extensive gardens, with a garden profile depth of 200-1500mm+ supporting substantial vegetation, shrubs and trees as a landscaped space for people to inhabit. Sloped Roof Gardens. Fytogreen uses the Geoweb® Cellular Confinement System - this engineered solution enables green roofs to be installed on slopes from 15 - 45 degrees by eliminating slippage off a smooth structure such as a water proof membrane.
This Roof Garden Journey follows North Bondi Amenities Block that adjoins a Sydney Water Pump House (a ‘Sam Crawford Architects’ design). The renovation incorporated a new 90m2 roof garden to with varied depths from 150mm to 260mm to create some localized contours. The garden had 7 skylights that were built into the roof structure. The garden was mounded around the skylights using planting pallet including coastal sedges, grasses and ground covers.

27,000M2 LARGEST ROOF GARDEN IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE location client architect landscape architect design & install completion
Wonthaggi, Victoria Aquasure ARM / Peckvonhartel Aspect Studio Fytogreen Australia 2012
This project was commenced in 2011 and finished early 2012. The size of this roof garden makes it the largest green roof in the southern hemisphere. Around 110,000 tube stocks of indigenous ground covers, sedges, lilies, succulents & nonwood shrubs were used. All species selected were native & indigenous to the area. The design brief was to replicate what would have been growing there prior to human habitation. Being a coastal ecologically sensitive area the brief from the client was to minimize the visual impact of Australia’s largest municipal water treatment plant. The quality of the design has been commended by the Victorian State Architects office, DSE and other government entities.

Fytogreen installed the green roof on Level W1, the full shade eastern garden on the ground floor, and the tiered entrance garden, which contains trees up to 5m high at planting time. Due to all areas being in a complete rain shadow, Fytogreen refined a suitable species list. This rain shadow aspect meant that the irrigation design had to be very robust & supported by a flow rate monitored alarm system. With the gardens all under the roof line, standard cranes could not be used for moving material easily to the respective areas. This required material to be placed where possible by Franna crane horizontally and the bulk of the material was blown in by We-Blow.

Breeze Apartments, Mooloolaba

74.5M2 Crn Esplanade & Meta St, Mooloolaba Aria Property Group Tony Owen Partners Hutchinsons Fytogreen Australia November 2016
Breeze is a boutique beachside development by Aria group. Fytogreen was invited to design and install 2 extensive roof gardens and an additional 29m2 of vertical gardens, made up of 2 separate Fytowalls. One of challenges faced on the roof garden was its profile depth. Some areas required a profile depth as low as 70mm above the waterproofing. Fytogreen’s mineral based extensive roof garden soil, called “Hypodium 40” was utilized; its is ideally suited for thin profile gardens and can also be used for deeper profile roof gardens. The soils longevity without slumping will outlast the natural life spans of the plants used. Due to the location and its continuous exposure to coastal breezes and salt spray, Fytogreen’s botanist’s plant selection was critical, ensuring plants were suitable to these specific growing conditions.

Beare Park on Sydney harbour is a scenic local park with a heritage background. As part of the landscape regeneration of the park, Sydney City Council required that the amenities block set against a rock face on the south east corner of the park be beautified. The aim was to make the building more sympathetic and attuned to the local landscape whilst retaining the existing structure.
The team transformed the 46m2 concrete slab roof into a stunning extensive roof garden mounded to semi-extensive in areas to accommodate deeper plantings. The garden profile depth is generally a 120mm with mounding to 250mm, from waterproof membrane to the top of the stone mulch, comprising the Fytogreen proprietary extensive lightweight roof garden system.
