El calor invita a bailar y a disfrutar de la buena música. En la localidad de Algés, muy próxima a Lisboa, se celebrará una nueva edición del festival NOS Alive entre los días 6, 7 y 8 de julio. El cartel cuenta con grupos como Ryan Adams, Foo Fighters, The Cult o Depeche Mode entre otros muchos.

The hot weather is an invitation to dance and enjoy good music. In the town of Algés, very close to Lisbon, a new edition of the NOS Alive festival will be held on 6, 7 and 8 July. The programme includes groups like Ryan Adams, Foo Fighters, The Cult and Depeche Mode among many others.

Savile Row es la calle londinense conocida por albergar las mejores sastrerías de la capital inglesa. Pero los altos alquileres de los locales allí estaban haciendo que muchos de estos negocios cerraran para ser sustituidos por cadenas de grandes marcas. Por eso, las autoridades han decretado que en esa zona sólo pueden existir negocios de sastrería y confección.

Savile Row is the street known as the home of London’s best bespoke tailors. But high rents were forcing many of them to close, to be replaced by shops selling big brand names. Now the authorities have ruled that the area can only be occupied by businesses for custom tailoring.

Die Londoner Straße Savile Row ist dafür bekannt, dass hier die besten Schneider der Hauptstadt ansässig sind. Doch die hohen Lokalmieten haben dazu geführt, dass viele dieser Betriebe zugunsten der Filialen von Unternehmensketten bekannter Marken schließen mussten. Writer David Wagner (Andernach, 1971) has just published a book that will be of interest to anyone seeking a version of Berlin that’s different from that of the usual tourist guides. More than a guide, What Colour is Berlin is an essay about the German capital that reflects the private journey of a curious stroller who observes how the city has changed in recent years, with very little mention of the tourist sites.

ienen su ambiente ideal en los trópicos de agua clara, con una temperatura agradable para el baño, donde les llegue bien la luz. Son una estructura rocosa, asentada sobre el suelo del mar, formada por unos seres diminutos llamados pólipos. Estos segregan una serie de minerales que forman esqueletos externos cuya acumulación, combinada con la reproducción de miles y miles y miles de estos bichitos, crean esos paisajes submarinos que llamamos arrecifes de coral. Tardan cientos de años en madurar y son muy sensibles a los seres humanos. La más famosa acumulación es la gran barrera de coral de Australia, una de las localizaciones santas para los buceadores. Pero si Australia es Roma, México es Santiago. Allí está el Gran Arrecife Maya, la segunda barrera de coral más grande del mundo. Puerto Morelos es el principal puerto de Quintana Roo. En este estado mexicano bañado por el mar Caribe, se quedan muchos de los turistas que llegan a México. Quintana Roo es la joya de la corona del turismo nacional, con Puerto Morelos como una de las brillantes gemas que la adornan. Sus playas son tremendamente tranquilas, gracias justamente a esa barrera de coral, que con sus 1.000 kilómetros de extensión pasa por las aguas de México, Belice, Guatemala y Honduras. Con esto, Puerto Morelos se convierte en una gran opción para practicar el buceo.

The ideal places for them are the clear tropical seas, with their pleasant temperatures and sufficient sunlight. They are a rocky structure on the seabed, formed by some tiny creatures called polyps. These polyps give off a series of minerals that form external skeletons whose accumulation, combined with the reproduction of thousands and thousands and thousands of these tiny creatures, creates the underwater seascape that we call coral reefs. They take hundreds of years to mature and are very sensitive to human activity. The most famous of them is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, a holy place for scuba divers. But if Australia is the Rome for divers, México is their Santiago de Compostela, site of the Gran Arrecife Maya, the world’s second largest coral reef. Puerto Morelos is the main port of Quintana Roo. This state on the Caribbean attracts many of the tourists who visit Mexico. Quintana Roo is the jewel in the crown of Mexican tourism, and Puerto Morelos

Sí, aquí se organiza en verano el Festival Grec, otra cita importante en el calendario. Pero aún hay más. Eran las tertulias de café, aquellos corrillos bohemios donde escritores, pintores y demás artistas más o menos faranduleros compartían sus impresiones, establecían contacto entre sí cuando no existía la palabra networking y caminaban por un Madrid en el que la vida artística transcurría entre endecasílabos y pensiones de paso. Empezaron a ganar el nombre en el siglo XVII, cuando era habitual escuchar en círculos a aquel que poseía cierta cultura y citaba pensadores clásicos como Tertuliano, teólogo que vivió del año 160 al 220. En España se pusieron de moda en el Siglo de Oro, con la Escuela del Parnaso. Desde entonces, los grupos de intelectuales tomaron como costumbre hacer de los bares “una sucursal del hogar”, como decía el humanista Ángel Fernández de los Ríos. Y Madrid fue el centro de este hábito, sobre todo a principios del siglo XX. These were the tertulias, informal but regular meetings in cafés, bohemian gettogethers where writers, painters and other more or less well-known characters shared their impressions and gathered together in a period when ‘networking’ didn’t exist, and artistic life was spent between poetry and cheap lodging houses. Christian theologian who lived from 160 to 220. In Spain the tertulias were fashionable in the Golden Age, from the early 16th century to the late 17th century, with the Escuela del Parnaso. Ever since, groups of intellectuals made bars and cafés “a branch office of home” in the words of the humanist Ángel Fernández de los Ríos. And Madrid was the centre of this custom, especially at the start of the 20th century. One of such meeting places was the Café Pombo, immortalised by the painter José Solana (and today a clothing shop). It was in the centre of the city, and one of its regular customers was the writer Ramón Gómez de la Serna, perhaps best known for popularising the surprising and frequently humorous aphorisms called greguerías –although he would later say that to discuss poetry was “very boring.” Valle Inclán and other playwrights preferred the Café Lion, just a short distance away. Quizás se hayan desvanecido como escenario de ciencia ficción en el que un grupo de gente se sienta y habla. Pero seguir, siguen. Hay bares en los que cualquiera puede subirse a una tarima y leer poemas. O en los que se intercambian gustos e impresiones en otros idiomas como método de aprendizaje. Los Diablos Azules o Bella Ciao sirven de ejemplo. A lo mejor sus actividades no están aún expuestas en el Reina Sofía ni las menciona ningún premio Nobel, pero son algo más que un grupo de WhatsApp, que no es poco.

He still won’t reveal all the details of so many afternoons and nights in the company of intellectuals (and their drinks) but he will say that these reunions “have almost disappeared.” Maybe that’s not so serious. Maybe they’ve vanished as if they were a science fiction setting in which a group of people sit down to talk. But they still go on. There are bars where anyone can get up on a platform and read his poems. Or where people talk about things in foreign languages as a way of learning those languages. Los Diablos Azules and Bella Ciao are two examples. The results may not yet be exhibited in the Reina Sofía museum or mentioned by any Nobel Prize winner, but these meetings are much more than a ‘WhatsApp’ group, and today that’s quite an accomplishment.

Doch so schlimm ist es nicht. Vielleicht haben sie sich, wie in einem Science-FictionSzenario einfach nur verwandelt, in Leute, die sich hinsetzen und reden. Denn, es geht weiter. Es gibt Bars, in denen sich jeder auf ein Podest stellen und Gedichte vorlesen kann. Oder in denen Vorlieben und Meinungen ausgetauscht werden, sogar in verschiedenen Sprachen, als eine Art Lernmethode. Die Bars Los Diablos Azules oder Bella Ciao sind Beispiele. Wahrscheinlich werden die dortigen Aktivitäten weder im Reina Sofía ausgestellt, noch für einen Nobelpreis nominiert, aber sie sind mehr, als nur eine Whatsapp-Gruppe, was auch nicht wenig ist.

Y Roma, la ciudad en la que está ambientada esta película de Paolo Sorrentino, peca de eso: imposible no sentir un pellizco de melancolía paseando por el Coliseo, la escalinata de la Plaza de España, la Fontana di Trevi o cualquier callejuela del Trastévere. La capital de Italia está llena de pasado, pero aun con la decadencia que desprenden sus edificios se puede encontrar esa luminosidad a la que alude el filme. Un decorado perfecto. Magnético. Que ha servido tanto para mostrar la incertidumbre moral de nuestros días como para enseñarnos la historia de uno de los mayores imperios en la tierra. Roma evoca carreras de cuádrigas, peleas de gladiadores, fervor religioso o incluso la frivolidad narcisista de cada época. “No es posible encontrar en ningún lugar del planeta la intensidad surrealista que alcanza la capital italiana”, sostiene el periodista español Ángel Villarino. And Rome, the setting for this 2013 film by director Paolo Sorrentino, is full of such nostalgia: it’s impossible not to feel some melancholy when visiting the Coliseum, the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain or just about any narrow street in Trastévere. The capital of Italy is full of the past, but even in the decadence of its buildings can be found that luminosity alluded to in the title of his film. A perfect film set. Magnetic. One that has served both to show the moral uncertainties of our period and to teach us the history of one of the greatest empires on earth. Rome conjures up chariot races, gladiatorial contests, religious fervour and the narcissistic frivolity of every period. “No place on the planet has the surrealistic intensity of the Italian capital,” says Spanish journalist Ángel Villarino. And cinema, which for a little more than a century has been reflecting what goes on around us, has chosen it as a setting again and again. Comedy, drama, war film, suspense... Everything has been found in the Eternal City. “It’s ancient, and makes us film buffs go back in time to the origins of civilisation,” says Jesús Lens, a 46-yearold native of Granada and a traveller and author of several books about movies. Y casi da el pistoletazo a ese neorrealismo que encontrará en El ladrón de bicicletas (1948) o La Strada (1954) sus máximos exponentes de la crudeza urbana. “De los emperadores pasamos al siglo XX y la postguerra, pero también a la alegría de la paz y cierto atisbo de bonanza en Vacaciones en Roma (1953) o La dolce vita (1960)”, apunta Lens, que elogia las miles de máscaras de la ciudad y la anarquía de sus habitantes. “Es la que más ha cambiado en el cine. Se puede contar lo que quieras. Sus monumentos y ese carácter de aparente orgullo por el desorden le dan un empaque redondo”. Ha habido mucho más. Hasta La gran belleza, de 2013, se han ideado robos como el de Ocean’s Twelve (2004), conspiraciones vaticanas en Ángeles y demonios (2009), líos de parejas en Manuale D’Amore (2005) o desvaríos existenciales en Querido diario (1993), aunque la Vespa de su director y actor principal, Nanni Moretti, no haya trascendido en imanes, hules o pósteres de la misma forma que la que conducía Audrey Hepburn con Gregory Peck de pasajero (y en un icónico blanco y negro). Decía Woody Allen (citándole mal, como siempre se hace) que en París escribiría un romance, en Berlín una película de espías y en Roma lo que le diera la gana. Ya lo cumplió, por cierto, con A Roma con amor (2012), una fábula en cuatro capítulos que rendía la trama a un personaje ubicuo: la capital de Italia. A la cinta no le faltaban ni su indiscutible ingenio ni, claro, la nostalgia que rezuma esta inagotable ciudad.

Although most of the sequences were shot at Cinecittà, the studios built by Mussolini in the 1930s, we can find the Forum, the Coliseum or a replica of the Circus Maximus (filming was not permitted in the real Circus so as to protect its legacy). Following the course of history, Rome, Open City, from 1945, narrates in dark tones the ways communists were persecuted by the Nazis during the World War Two occupation of the city. And then the start of Italian neorealism: Bicycle Thief (1948) and La Strada (1954), crude reflections of urban life. “From the emperors we go to the 20th century and the post-war years, but also to the happiness of peace and signs of a certain prosperity in Roman Holiday (1953) or La Dolce Vita (1960),” writes Lens, who celebrates the thousand different masks of the city and the anarchy of its inhabitants. “It’s the city that has changed the most in cinema. You can tell whatever story you like here. Its monuments and that character of apparent pride in its disorder make for a very powerful impact.” There’s been much more. Until La grande bellezza, this city has been the scene for robberies, as in Ocean’s Twelve (2004), Vatican conspiracies in Angels and Demons (2009), love stories like Manuale D’Amore (2005) or existential preoccupations in Dear Diary (1993), although the Vespa of its director and principal actor, Nanni Moretti, hasn’t been celebrated to the extent of the one driven by Audrey Hepburn, with Gregory Peck as an anxious passenger (and in iconic black-and-white). Este italiano de 56 años y originario de Perugia —tierra de trufa y caza mayor—tenía ya pie y medio en una plaza de funcionario de ferrocarriles cuando decidió que no iba a pasarse la vida delante de un escritorio, sino entre sartenes y cazos. Orazio disgustó a sus padres y perdió una plaza asegurada de por vida. A cambio, sin embargo, entró en el selecto club de los que viven haciendo lo que les apasiona. Siempre hay peajes. “¡Alguna vez me he arrepentido!”, dice entre risas el actual jefe de cocina del H10 Ocean Dreams Boutique Hotel. En realidad miente. Le encanta lo que hace y los ojos le brillan cuando muestra orgulloso el jardín de hierbas aromáticas que acaba de plantar en uno de los patios del hotel. Empezó a forjarse durante los fines de semana en las cocinas de los restaurantes de su ciudad, un templo de la carne. Después, subió a fuego rápido para adaptarse a la zona turística de Rimini, en donde absorbió durante cuatro años todo cuanto pudo. Y lo hizo apoyándose en una técnica infalible: el ensayoerror. “Mis inicios fueron cien por cien autodidactas, siempre influenciado por los cocineros con los que trabajaba; y más tarde me fui perfeccionando con cursos”, explica el chef. Canary Islands essence, Italian spirit Orazio Lezi is one of those vocational chefs who are continually reinventing themselves. This 56-year-old Italian, a native of Perugia –the land of truffles and big game– was set to become a railroad bureaucrat when he decided he didn’t want to spend his life behind a desk but among pots and frying pans. This displeased his parents and lost him a lifetime job, but in exchange he entered the select club of those people who do what excites them. Of course there is always a price to pay. “There have been a few times when I regretted it!,” says the man who today is the head chef at the H10 Ocean Dreams Boutique Hotel. Actually, he’s lying. He loves what he does, and his eyes sparkle when he proudly shows off the garden of aromatic herbs that he’s just planted in one of the hotel’s patios. Orazio began his training on weekends at the restaurants in Perugia, a temple of meat dishes. From there it was on to the tourist area of Rimini, where for four years he learned everything he could. He did so through an infallible technique: trial and error. “My beginning was one hundred per cent self-taught, though always influenced by the chefs I was working with, and after that I improved through cooking courses,” he says now. Since then he’s been living in the Canaries, where he has run four restaurants, has had a cooking programme on television, and has written a book. Around here it would be hard to find someone who hasn’t heard the name Orazio Lezi. Conscious of the fact that to stop making progress might mean failure, a little more than a decade ago this chef decided to reinvent himself once again, and change his concept of cuisine: leaving behind his Italian traditions, he sought a more creative style “but without going overboard.” This octopus (pulpo) with Genoese pesto is a good example of his cooking and one of his most popular creations on the exclusive menu at H10 Ocean Dreams Boutique Hotel. PREPARATION

ZUBEREITUNG

Lavamos el pulpo y lo cocinamos en abundante agua con unas hojas de laurel (20 minutos de cocción por cada kilogramo de peso). Apagamos el fuego y dejamos que se enfríe dentro del agua durante 20 minutos. Para el pesto genovés, trituramos en el mortero la albahaca, los piñones, aceite de oliva, una pizca de sal y un diente de ajo. Cocinamos las papas con la piel en agua marina. Después, las vaciamos un poco y rellenamos con el pesto. Para la espuma, cogemos un litro de agua de la cocción del pulpo, le añadimos lecitina de soja y batimos. Pasamos el pulpo unos minutos en una plancha caliente (o brasa) y emplatamos. Primero, se espolvorea el fondo con pimentón dulce, colocamos el pulpo, las papas, la espuma y terminamos con un chorro de aceite de oliva y unas escamas de sal.

Wash the octopus and boil it in abundant water with a few laurel leaves (20 minutes of cooking for each kilo). Turn off the heat and let it cool in the water for 20 minutes. To prepare the pesto, grind up in a mortar the basil, pine nuts, olive oil, a pinch of salt and a clove of garlic. Boil the potatoes in their skins in sea water. Then partly empty them and fill in with the pesto. For the foam, take a litre of water that was used for boiling the octopus, add soya-lecithin and beat. Cook the octopus for a few minutes on a hot grill (or over coals). First, powder the bottom of a plate with sweet paprika, then place the octopus, the potatoes and the foam, and end off with a squirt of olive oil and some flakes of salt.

Das Feuer ausstellen und den Tintenfisch im Wasser 20 Minuten lang abkühlen lassen. Für das Pesto genovese das Basilikum, die Pinienkerne, Olivenöl, eine Prise Salz und eine Knoblauchzehe mit einem Mörser zerstoßen. Kartoffeln mit der Pelle in Meersalzwasser kochen. Danach die Kartoffeln etwas aushöhlen und mit dem Pesto füllen. Für den Schaum, ein Liter des Wassers, in dem der Tintenfisch gekocht hat, nehmen, Sojalecithin hinzufügen und verquirlen. Den Tintenfisch ein paar Minuten in einer heißen Pfanne oder auf einem Grill erhitzen und anrichten. Zuerst den Teller mit dem süßen Paprika bestäuben, dann den Tintenfisch draufgeben, danach die Kartoffeln, den Schaum und schließlich mit ein paar Tropfen Olivenöl sowie Salzkörnern obendrauf abrunden.

os encontramos ante un verdadero símbolo de Gran Canaria. Un regalo de la naturaleza en el centro geográfico de la isla. Un espacio de ancestrales liturgias aborígenes. Un bonito balcón con vistas desde donde, en los días más apacibles, se divisa con claridad el vecino Tenerife. Allí, al fondo, emerge un Teide imperial que confiere al Roque Nublo ese aire de atalaya privilegiada digna de explorar, bellísimo mirador que se presenta como un plan apetecible para el viajero inquieto. Ascender a esta gran montaña de Gran Canaria —la segunda más alta, tras el Pico de las Nieves— no es difícil. Tampoco se trata de un paseo de andar por casa, pero vale la pena el esfuerzo —muy asequible, sin duda— y conviene dedicar un buen rato a recorrer los caminos que coronan este Monumento natural, que se eleva a más de 1.800 metros sobre el nivel del mar en tierras del municipio de Tejeda. Desde luego, ningún estratega habría imaginado una torre de control mejor situada. En la web oficial de Turismo de Gran Canaria (www.grancanaria. com) nos invitan a descubrir “un pequeño gran continente” y a sentirnos como astronautas “sin dejar el suelo”. Y, cómo no, el Parque Rural del Nublo merece una mención especial, una parada obligatoria. Realmente, el Roque Nublo, declarado Monumento Nacional, sería la señorial roca basáltica en forma de monolito, que alcanza unos 80 metros de altura, corona la cima y surgió —nos recuerdan— “como consecuencia de la actividad volcánica durante el

All this makes Roque Nublo an exceptional watchtower that’s worth exploring, a beautiful vantage point that attracts restless travellers. It’s not hard to get to the top of this big mountain, the second highest on Gran Canaria after the Pico de las Nieves, and while the climb may not be exactly a stroll around the house, it’s worth making the effort. Time should be taken to walk along the trails at the top of what has been declared a Natural Monument, which stands in the Tejeda township, at more than 1,800 metres above sea level. Certainly no military strategist could have imagined a better located operations tower.

Wahrscheinlich kann sich ein Stratege wohl keinen Wachturm vorstellen, dessen Lage besser sein könnte. Auf der offiziellen Webseite von Gran Canaria www.grancanaria.com werden wir dazu eingeladen, einen kleinen bedeutenden Kontinent zu entdecken und uns wie Astronauten zu fühlen, ohne den Boden verlassen zu müssen. Und, wie sollte es anders sein, bekommt der Roque Nublo einen besonderen Stellenwert und gilt als Pflichtprogramm. In Wirklichkeit ist der Roque Nublo ein stattlicher Basaltfels in Form eines Monolithen, der sich herrschaftlich mit einer Höhe von 80 Metern erhebt, den Gipfel krönt und –wie wir erinnert werden – als Folge vulkanischer Aktivitäten im Pleistozän entstand. Wie auch immer: Wir machen uns auf, um das Unverzichtbare zu erleben, also, Rucksack auf den Rücken geschnallt und los geht es guten Fußes. Bei einem Interview für Canarias7. es, riet der Wanderexperte und Autor des Buches Descubriendo Gran Canaria: Reserva de la Biosfera (Entdecke das Biosphärenreservat Gran Canaria) Álvaro Monzón: Wenn du diese wundervolle Welt erleben und dich mit der Natur verbinden möchtest, empfehle ich dir, dich zum Roque Nublo zu begeben. En fin, ahora cojamos lo imprescindible, mochila a la espalda y, como aquel, hagamos camino al andar… En una entrevista para Canarias7.es, un diario online, el experto senderista Álvaro Monzón, autor del libro Descubriendo Gran Canaria: Reserva de la Biosfera, sugería: “Si quieres comenzar a experimentar este maravilloso mundo de conectarnos con la naturaleza, te recomiendo hacer la subida del Roque Nublo, camino muy señalizado, de fácil asimilación. La subida dura unos 25 minutos, casi dos kilómetros, y puede incluso dar la vuelta completamente por su base. Es una buena experiencia para empezar”. Y, quién sabe, igual de esta aventura surge una afición eterna. Todos los montañeros comenzaron con un primer paso. El paisaje en el corazón de la isla resulta variopinto. Pinares, acantilados, riscos, charcas artificiales, castaños, álamos, matorrales de retama, numerosas especies exóticas... La ruta arranca desde la carretera general y nos permite visualizar desde otro ángulo localidades como Artenara o Acusa, además lugares como la Caldera de Tejada, el Pozo de las Nieves, La Culata o Los Llanos de la Pez. The Turismo de Gran Canaria official webpage (www.grancanaria. com) invites us to discover from this vantage point “a small big continent” and to feel like “astronauts without leaving the ground.” Naturally it’s worth mentioning the Parque Rural del Nublo, an obligatory stop. The Roque Nublo, in the shape of an 80-metrehigh monolith, was formed by a special kind of volcanic rock, and came about “as a result of volcanic activity during the Pleistocene Age.” So grab just what’s necessary, put it into your backpack, and let’s get going… In an interview with the Canarias7.es online newspaper, the expert hiker Álvaro Monzón, author of the book Descubriendo Gran Canaria: Reserva de la Biosfera (Discovering Grana Canaria: Biosphere Reserve) suggests the following: “If you want to experience this marvellous way of connecting with nature, I recommend you make the easy, well-marked climb up to Roque Nublo. It takes about 25 minutes, is almost two kilometres long, and you can even walk completely around its base. It’s a good experience for a start.” And who knows? Maybe it will lead to a lifelong love of trekking. All mountaineers began with a first step. The landscape in the centre of the island is quite varied. Mit anderen Worten, jeder, der auf der Suche nach Zurückgezogenheit, Beschaulichkeit, Stille

Oder, wie man auf Gran Canaria sagen würde, al golpito (immer mit der Ruhe).

Para Goytisolo era “la ciudad más hermosa del mundo”; pero lo cierto es que su maravilloso paisaje también cautivó a otros grandes escritores como Rainer Maria Rilke, Ernest Hemingway, Orson Welles, Rafael Alberti, García Lorca o Jorge Luis Borges. Este último la describió como "la delicada penumbra de la ceguera, un cóncavo silencio de patios, un ocio del jazmín y un tenue rumor de agua que conjuraba memorias de desiertos". Tal y como describieron los escritores, Ronda se asoma sobre una vertiginosa garganta conocida como Tajo. A un lado de este queda el Barrio Viejo, con un trazado de herencia morisca y casas blancas con refrescantes patios. Y al otro, la urbe moderna, renacentista y barroca. Estos quedan unidos por un maravilloso puente que parece una grapa de piedra clavada sobre la tierra. Este se conoce como Puente Nuevo y salva la hoz de más de 100 metros que ha abierto a su paso el río Guadalevín. El Puente Nuevo es, además, un maravilloso mirador desde el que se divisan las crestas de la Serranía de Ronda. Y según José María Pemán, escritor andaluz, "uno se asoma a él y puede encontrar en el fondo miedo, vaticinios, oraciones o versos”. Aunque la cornisa del Tajo y el puente son el emblema de la ciudad, Ronda es mucho más. Su plaza de toros presume de ser una de las más antiguas de España. Esta es, a día de hoy, propiedad de la Real Maestranza de la Caballería de Ronda creada por Felipe II en 1572 para la defensa del territorio.

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITY IN THE WORLD “We caught sight of Ronda. It was curled up in the mountains, like the natural prolongation of the landscape, and in the sunlight it seemed to me the most beautiful city in the world.” That is how Spanish writer Juan Goytisolo described the fascination he felt the first time he saw Ronda, a town built in the mountains atop a gorge dug out by the Guadalevín River. For Goytisolo it was “the most beautiful city in the world”, but the fact is that its wonderful landscape also captivated other great writers such as Rainer Maria Rilke, Ernest Hemingway, Orson Welles, Rafael Alberti, García Lorca and Jorge Luis Borges. Borges described it as “the delicate twilight of blindness, a silent concave of patios, an idleness of jasmine and a tenuous echo of water that conjured up memories of deserts.” As writers have noted, Ronda hangs over a dizzying gorge known as the Tajo. On one side is the old town, with a Moorish street layout and white homes with cool patios. On the other, the modern city, Renaissance and Baroque. They are linked by a marvellous bridge that forms a stone staple over the ground. It’s known as the Puente Nuevo and sits more than 100 metres above the gorge carved out by the Guadalevín River. The Puente Nuevo also provides marvellous views of the tops of the Ronda mountain range. And according to the Andalusian writer José María Pemán, “leaning over the bridge one can find at the bottom fear, predictions, prayers or verses.” Although the Tajo and the bridge are symbols of the city, Ronda is much more. Its bullring, one of the oldest in Spain, is owned today by the Real Maestranza de la Caballería de Ronda (Royal Horse-Riding School) created by King Felipe II in 1572 to help defend this territory. Como sus caballeros necesitaban un lugar donde practicar, se dedicó un espacio de la ciudad para los ejercicios ecuestres, entre los cuales, como ya era tradición en la España de la época, se incluyeron los juegos de destreza con toros. De este modo se construyó una explanada de 66 metros de diámetro, siendo el ruedo más amplio del mundo actualmente, con 5.000 asientos colocados sobre dos pisos que descansan sobre 136 columnas. Fue inaugurada la tarde del 19 de mayo de 1785 con los toreros Pedro Romero y Pepe Hillo y aún hoy es considerada como una de las cunas de la tauromaquia. Otras de las grandes sorpresas que esconde Ronda son sus baños árabes que datan del siglo XIII y que se encuentran situados en las puertas de la ciudad. Este recinto termal está considerado como uno de los mejor conservados en la Península Ibérica. En la actualidad, aún parece que se pueden respirar los vapores aromatizados que salieron de la sala de calderas durante más de 300 años. Todo esto, unido al encanto propio de la ciudad, hace que sea Ronda uno de los puntos clave de la Costa del Sol. aristocratic subjects needed a place to practice, part of the city was used for their equestrian exercises which, in the tradition of the times, included fighting bulls from horseback. A ring was constructed, whose 66 metres make it the ring with the largest diameter in the world, and it has 5,000 seats distributed on two levels supported by 136 columns. It was inaugurated on 19 May 1785 by the star matadors Pedro Romero and Pepe Hillo, and is today considered one of the cradles of bullfighting. Another of the big surprises in Ronda are its Arab baths, which date from the 13th century and are located at the gates of the city. It is considered one of the best preserved baths on the Iberian Peninsula, and even today it almost seems possible to breathe the aromatic vapours that emanated from its cauldrons for more than 300 years. All these charms make Ronda one of the key points on the Costa del Sol. Its bridge over the Tajo, its streets and little white houses make visitors fall in love with it, just as great writers like Goytisolo and Lorca did. It really is “the most beautiful city in the world.”

All dies, vereint im ganzen Charme von Ronda, macht die Stadt zu einem Schlüsselerlebnis an der Costa del Sol. In seine Brücke über der Schlucht Tajo, die Gassen und kleinen weißen Häuser kann man sich als Besucher einfach verlieben, so wie es den großartigen Autoren Goytisolo und Lorca ergangen ist.
