SEAMLESS TRANSITION After seven years in the U.S. Army, Jarus Perez found a fit at G4S
J
arus Perez has been an instrumental part of the G4S Secure Solutions Northern and Central California locations for the past two years. Prior to his career with G4S, Perez spent more than seven years in the U. S. Army, during which time he participated in both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. During his time in the Army, Perez deployed multiple times and quickly assumed leadership roles, eventually achieving the position of platoon sergeant. “Being deployed taught me the value of good leadership,” says Perez, who carried these leadership skills with him as he progressed through his military career and applied them to his current career as a training specialist with G4S. “As a platoon sergeant, my main concern was taking care of my soldiers and providing them with the skills and equipment needed to complete the mission. In my position with G4S, I am responsible for training security officers to the best of my ability and providing them with the tools necessary for their duties.” As a wounded veteran, Perez recalls the transition into the civilian workforce as the most challenging endeavor he has ever experienced. After being wounded in 2011 by a dismounted IED that detonated just two feet from him, Perez knew his life was changed forever. As he underwent surgery, extensive physical therapy and coped with his departure from the Army, Perez was desperately searching for a new “identity” and purpose in life. “Becoming a part of G4S helped ease my transition into the civilian workforce. It was the structure of the military that helped me to adapt more quickly,” he states, adding that G4S’ military-friendly environment, as well as being familiar with the company values and having the unique experiences and training former service members bring to the table made all the difference in his search for a second career. “The security industry is something I am passionate about, and given my experiences in training and instructing courses in the Army, I jumped on the chance to apply for the training specialist

position at G4S.” As a training specialist, Perez is responsible for the initial orientation of new hires, as well as the maintenance of contract-required training for each site and its officers, but his reach is felt far beyond these duties. Jarus Perez receives a Certificate of Appreciation Praised by his for his support to the Work for Warriors program super visor, B ob and his commitment to hire service members, post9/11 veterans, their spouses and families. S c h r e i n e r, f o r being passionate and enthusiastic about his work, Schreiner says, “Jarus is an instrumental part of our ongoing efforts to recruit, hire and retain service veterans.” Noted, too, is the fact that Perez also helped pioneer an extremely comprehensive firearms training and safety program for all of the region’s armed personnel. Perez encourages other wounded veterans to be proactive, persistent and resourceful when attempting to enter the civilian workforce, acknowledging the diff iculty of the situation. “Surrounding yourself with positive and supportive people is crucial to your effective transition,” he advises, reminding his fellow veterans to stay strong. “It will get better,” he adds, much like it did for him when finding an organization like G4S, where his supervisors recognize the value of his military experience, saying, “We benefit from Jarus’ energy and knowledge, and are extremely fortunate to have him on our staff.”
