a job well done! We appreciate your effort and your ability to continuously perform under pressure. This is not just my observation as CATSA’s Director of Service Delivery Pacific, Jim V. Doucette had a few positive things to say. Good afternoon Remco, “I wanted to take this opportunity to send along a short note of thanks regarding the great work done by your teams this summer. Our operational performance this summer was some of the best we have seen and we are keenly aware of the level of effort that it takes to make the operation perform well. FALL 2018 ISSUE - EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT
Rose’s Last Vacation Wish G4S EMPLOYEES COME TOGETHER TO RAISE FUNDS FOR ROSE TO FLY FIRST CLASS TO SEE HER FAMILY IN THE PHILIPPINES.
E
arlier this spring, Rose, a Service Delivery Manager was in her last stages of cancer and had spent her remaining days in a Vancouver hospice. Kelly Mann, Training and Performance Manager, as well as James Lau, a Service Delivery Manager had visited Rose several times, and she had expressed her wish to travel to the Philippines to be with her family. Rose had received doctor’s approval and booked her flight towards the end of February to spend time with her loved ones for one last time.
Kelly and James discussed the idea of sending out an email and organizing a fund as a generous gesture to raise money to upgrade Rose’s flight to First Class. G4S Aviation Division pulled together and fully supported Rose’s ‘Last Vacation Wish’ and a total of $8020 was raised. “This was one of the hardest things James and I have had to do knowing that we will never see Rose again. You all showed so much love and support for Rose, so thank you!” says Kelly.
Page 4
As a team effort, enough money was raised to send Rose on her last trip, and she was beyond words to express her gratitude towards her colleagues and was touched by everyone’s support. “James and I are so proud to be part of this group, love you all. It truly shows the support of the 'old crew' where we consider each other as family and will do anything to help and support each other” explains Kelly. After spending time with her loved ones, Rose returned home and a few weeks later passed away.

Brian Chairman’s Personal Journey
B
written by Amy Perry, Regional Manager for the North Pacific
rian Charman, Base Administrator/Screening Officer in Sandspit (YZP), isn’t a born and bred Sandspit local, but has been there to help the community through changing and challenging times. Born in England, and raised in Dawson Creek, BC, Brian started work with BC Tel in Prince Rupert, BC in 1968, where he met Margaret. In 1972, Brian and Margaret married in Margaret’s hometown of Sandspit, but his current job had the pair soon moving throughout BC relocating first to Prince George, and to the Lower Mainland. Through these times, Brian and Margaret promised to return home to Sandspit one day to help with the family business, the local golf course. After a long and successful career with BC Tel and their children were grown, Brian and his wife returned to Sandspit in 1998. Brian made good on his word to help with the family business by assuming the role of (part) owner and operator, but Brian wanted to do more to help the community as they were currently facing troubles economically due to local industry suffering a severe slow down. Brian did so by becoming the President of the Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of Misty Islands Economic Development Society, or MIEDS, which promoted tourism and helped in raising funds for
community structure. One of the projects spearheaded through this endeavor was the installation of the community water system. Another, more obvious to tourists like me, is the “Spirit of Sandspit”, or as the locals call it the SOS, as it was built in a time of economic downturn. It’s a well know tourism structure in Sandspit today.
Never one to keep a slow pace, Brian also was brought on board in 2000 with Canadian Regional Airline to assist with facilitating services and screening passengers at YZP. In 2002, when CATSA was established, Brian assisted the transition to the Screening Operations that we see today, along with a staff of 10 Screening Officers making the Contractor the largest employer in the airport. At the time, YZP typically screened four to five flights per day averaging 200-250 passengers per day. Over the course of the next few years the workloads dropped bringing operations to only one flight per day for the majority of the year, and the Screening Officer numbers came down to only seven
Page 8
staff. This change in staff made Brian the only male on site to conduct searches on passengers in addition to being the sites Base Administrator, making him an invaluable asset to the team. Brian has remained the only male on site until June 2016, as it took that long to find a willing male applicant to apply for a role in such a small community [of under 300 residents], for so few hours of work available. One might expect Brian to have retired years ago, and when asked why he hasn’t followed your typical course of the golden years, Brian expresses his love of the community, in that it’s unique. He says, “You can still do what you need to do [in our job] without feeling like you’re on an assembly line”. As well, with his community involvement in screening he’s able to continue interaction with the general populace, and he thoroughly enjoys meeting people from around the world. His employers, co-workers, and passengers are glad that he’s of this sentiment. You can feel Brian’s dedication and enjoyment for his work and the people that he works with in a simple conversation with him. In Brian’s own words; “I keep telling myself I’m going to retire, but I don’t. I would just miss this. I may not be living ‘the dream’, but I’m living happy!”

FALL 2018 ISSUE - HEALTH & SAFETY
Health & Safety Tips The 1st Step towards a safer work environment...Effective Communication
4 Keys to Effective Communication Communicating health and safety information effectively is crucial to preventing injuries and illness. But how can you be sure your message is getting across?
Remember the four keys to success:
1. Interactive. Flows both ways. You speak about safety and listen to concerns and suggestions from others. 2. Informative. Always provide details. Do not be afraid to speak up when something looks or feels unsafe. 3. Positive. Focuses on the exchange of ideas and information to improve workplace safety and prevent accidents and illness – Never to place blame… the “what”, not the “who”. 4. Productive. Allows you to interact successfully with others Observe, communicate and always aim to create a safer workplace for all!

Kudos to our staff who receive positive feedback from passengers, managers and staff alike. Keep up the great work!
Dear Mr.Loevendie, It has come to my attention that a passenger travelling through Kelowna International Airport (YLW) emailed the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) to thank Ms. Michele Hartley for the exceptional service she provided to the passenger. Ms.Hartley was extremely nice and helpful and wanted to thank her for making a stressful evening a little easier. On behalf of CATSA, I would like to extend my congratulations and appreciation for Ms. Michele Hartley’s commitment to customer service. Sincerely, Jim V. Doucette, Director, Service Delivery, Pacific Good Evening Everyone, I was contacted tonight by the base manager for Air New Zealand in relation to an incident with a SSSS passenger and a laptop which would not turn on and therefore was unable to fly with the passenger. Bruce, the Air NZ base manager, was very complimentary towards Kevin Kim, Operations Manager and praised his professionalism and courtesy in dealing with this passenger. Please pass along CATSA’s gratitude in Kevin’s handling of this incident. Regards, Hugh Black, Service Delivery Manager (YVR) Dear Mr.Loevendie, It has come to my attention that a passenger travelling through the Comox Airport wrote to the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) to thank Ms. Cathy Hufnagel and Ms. Rose McLean for their outstanding customer service. The passenger states that he travels on a weekly basis and that Ms.Hufnagel and Ms.McLean provided him with the friendliest security screening he has ever experienced. The passenger goes on to say that they were very personable, greeted him with a smile and positive attitude. Their dedication and professionalism are appreciated by the customers, and sets an example for all Screening Officers. Sincerely, Jim V. Doucette, Director, Service Delivery, Pacific Waqar Haque was going through security, when he forgot his laptop at security lane. “I fly more than an average would, and have had a variety of experiences through security all around the world. This past Sunday, however, an event has changed my impression of the security personnel at the YVR airport. Shortly after I had settled into my seat aboard a West Jet flight, a security staff member came on board and asked my name. Then he produced the laptop which I had forgotten to collect after going through security. I was overly impressed how the security made an effort to trace me to the flight and my seat. I believe this is beyond the call of duty and I extend my sincerest thanks to the gentleman who brought my laptop and very professionally handed it over to me. I was ecstatic and didn’t even remember to get his name - I hope he receives my sincerest compliments through this message. On behalf of CATSA, I would like to extend my congratulations and appreciation for Mr.Rajangad Batra’s commitment to customer service. Sincerely, Jim V. Doucette, Director, Service Delivery, Pacific “I am a frequent traveler and on my last visit at the YVR airport, I met the friendliest pre-board screening officer, Parveen Giga. She was really friendly, patient and accommodating. My pre-board screening indicated that I had a few bottles over 100ml that I completely forgot about. She helped me not panic and her excellent customer service made sure I had a great traveling experience. I really appreciate people like this in the customer facing environment.” On behalf of CATSA, we would like to thank Ms.Parvin Giga for her commendable job and trust that you will recognize her high quality of service. Sincerely, Jim V. Doucette, Director, Service Delivery, Pacific
