SPRING 2019 ISSUE Message from Remco Loevendie, Chief Operating Officer Hello, bonjour to all, It is with great pleasure to write the introduction to the third edition of our Aviation newsletter since we relaunched it last year. As expected, travel has slowed down a bit during the first quarter of the year, so I hope everyone had a chance to take a breather. This spring has been a bit different as we have seen changes in the flight schedules while airlines are dealing with the grounding of the 737 Max-8 aircraft. Although the Max-8 is not used in any of smaller sites the impact has been felt across the region as the airlines have been moving equipment around to deal with the situation. After strong performance on exercises in the first quarter, we did see a dip in the months of April and May, but fortunately June has been off to a good start, so let’s keep it up! We can all play our part by staying focused and helping the team when working at the divesting position; a good job done here helps the team in obtaining our objective of ‘every flight safe, every time’! In this issue, we have some great stories to tell on what some of our colleagues are doing, both at and outside of the airport. We highlight Wanda’s story, a Screening Officer in Prince George who is fundraising for the I Challenge Diabetes in support for her daughter. Additionally, we are happy to announce last quarter’s winners for both the Service Excellence

and Performance Awards. I would like to thank and congratulate all winners on their accomplishments! As most of you know, I have been with G4S in Canada since CATSA awarded us the contract in 2011. One of the things that has made me proud are the opportunities for growth we have offered to a lot of our colleagues. In this newsletter, we are sharing the story of Paul St. Peter, Regional Director for the Pacific, who talks about his journey since starting out with us in 2011. From Vancouver we are sharing the story of Julio Quijano, a Screening Officer who opens up and discusses his personal journey about overcoming adversity since contracting meningitis, and how that impacted his life. Lastly, we will be introducing the various support teams in Vancouver and some of the projects they are working on. As we are heading into the Summer months I hope that everyone still finds a bit of time to relax outside of work, as we all know that the busy times are ahead of us. And if you come across a great story at your airport or would like to highlight one of your colleagues do not hesitate to reach out to Milana so she can continue to share the news. Thank you, Remco

SPRING 2019 ISSUE

Paul St. Peter’s Journey with G4S from Point Leader to Regional Director for the Pacific We sat down with Paul St. Peter, who has been with G4S since 2011, starting out as a Point Leader at HBS. Paul was previously employed with Aeroguard, working as a Screening Officer before G4S won the contract in 2011. Paul researched G4S to learn more about the organization, and was impressed to see the scale at which it was operating, in more than 90 countries with more than 540,000 employees worldwide. Shortly after being hired by G4S as Point Leader, Paul applied to become a Service Delivery Manager. In his interview with us, he talks about his experience and how he became the Director of Regional Operations for the Pacific, a position that he currently holds. “I have been with G4S since 2011 when they got the contract. I was the Point Leader with the previous company. I researched and realized how big they were and the opportunities available. As soon as I got hired, I applied to become an SDM in 2012. I was in the first class for SDMs that G4S had, along with Alan King and Nima Vanaki,” says Paul. About six months after becoming an SDM at YVR, the Kamloops Airport was looking for assistance. They needed someone to cover an SDM position for a three week contract. About 12/13 people applied, and Paul was one of them. In the end, Paul was chosen to go. He was supposed to stay there for three weeks, but ended up staying for five and a half months. “They kept extending my contract because they wanted me

to help the Regional Manager at the time, onboard and train three SDMs. After we on-boarded the SDMs I trained them and stayed at the site for another month.” Initially, Paul was not planning on leaving Vancouver. “I had the goal to advance where I could, but if look back, the whole thing began because of Robert Bento, Vice President of Operations at the time. It was a conversation I had with him.” Robert Bento went on to say, “My understanding Paul, is that you want to advance within the company? The opportunity that is here, I don’t think you’re looking at it in the right way. You have the opportunity to go out into the region and learn what they do out there. I strongly encourage you to go for it. If you’re looking to advance within the company, this will help.” “It was after this conversation that I changed my mind and decided to apply,” says Paul. After returning to YVR, Paul assisted Mark McCreary, Director of Support Services in developing the HBS Training Program for SDMs.. “I did that for about a month. Shortly after, the Regional Manager responsible for the South Pacific wanted me to join her team. I decided to become part of the Regional Team, and went to Abbotsford in November of 2012, and was there until the summer of 2013.” There was an opportunity for an RM position for the North Pacific for a six month contract. Paul agreed to step in and stayed in Terrace for a year. Near the end of his tenure in Terrace they were looking for Operations Managers at YVR, Paul applied for

Page 4

a position and got it. “I left Terrace in the summer of 2014 and started working alongside Alan King, Imroz Khan and Nima Vanaki as OM’s.” In January 2015, the G4S team in Kelowna needed a Regional Manager for a three month contract, and they asked Paul if he would be willing to go up there until they found an RM and train that person once they found them. “They hired a Regional Manager, and I trained them. I stayed there until the summertime and then went back to YVR to work as an Operations Manager,” explains Paul. In the fall of 2015, the Regional Director of Operations responsible for all 20 airports left the organization. “While I was on vacation, Remco called me to ask if I would step in as the acting Director. I accepted and was the acting Regional Director for the remainder of the year,” says Paul. In January 2016, Paul was interviewed for the position of Regional Director, and got the position. In March of 2017, Barry Corbett joined G4S Aviation Division and was given the responsibility of the Interior/Yukon airports. Barry continues to be responsible for those seven airports and Paul is responsible for the remaining 13 airports within the Pacific Region. “Without my experience in Kamloops and in the region, I wouldn’t have had the experience and confidence to go out to Kelowna, and then step into the acting Director position. The skills I needed were learning all the processes, getting to know our business, the way all the airports operate in terms of

G4S SECURE SOLUTIONS, Aviation Division flights, scheduling, our people, our client and stakeholders. In the Region, this is even more important because you’ve got to deal with so many different stakeholders. For example, I have 13 airport authorities and 13 different schedules to work with, 2 different unions and 13 different employee groups to work with, so I’ve learned how to deal with people’s needs and personalities,” explains Paul.

and how they support each-other. They have worked hard to build their teams, there are lots of challenges in their work, but they continue to persist. I am most proud of them for what they’ve done in their Regions to be successful! They have worked very hard and they continue to work hard! Their position takes a lot of commitment, which can put a strain on their personal lives and themselves. Again, I

“Like Remco says, we don’t make cookies, it’s about our people, and that I take to heart. I want to treat my team as best as I can, because a lot of work goes into what they do. In order for me to keep my team on and to be successful, I need to be there to provide the support and the reinforcement that they need to continue to do the things we need to do,” says Paul. “I know our business really well because I’ve worked in HBS and PBS and had all the qualifications of a Screener/ PL, along with being an SDM (at YVR and in the Region), an RM and an OM on the management side. I know the interpersonal challenges we have, I’ve lived through them. From an empathic standpoint, I can relate to mostly anyone in our business because I’ve done pretty much every position that we have.” What Paul finds most rewarding is seeing his team succeed: Amy Perry, the Regional Manager for the North Pacific, Angela Cedar, the Regional Manager for Victoria, Troy Mills, the Regional Manager for the East Pacific and Darlene McDonald, the Regional Manager for the West Pacific. “I’m really proud of them

organization and allow them the opportunity to grow. I see the value of people coming in from the outside to get a fresh perspective. But our industry is so unique that I found we get more longevity for an RM or SDM if they are promoted from within.” “What makes me really proud is that we have had many Screeners come up through the ranks in the region to become SDMs. Some younger Screening Officers are looking for an opportunity to grow their career and are career oriented, and want to come into any managerial position to gain the experience that is applicable to any industry. Especially in security, they’re transferable skills to any other sector.” Over the years Paul has gained the experience and knowledge necessary to successfully carry his role as Regional Director for the Pacific. By stepping into various roles and acting in that position, he learned the skills needed to be a positive leader and consistently provide support for his team.

am extremely proud of their perseverance and their abilities to face adversity successfully! Matter of fact, I am proud of the whole Regional Team, we have had a lot of successes over the years.,” explains Paul. “We have on-boarded Screening Officers who are now Service Delivery Managers, and it’s important to grow people within our

Page 5

Some of the duties of the Regional Director include: motivating employees to be innovative and be the best in the business, ensuring operational adherence to the organizational policies and procedures, identifying operational strengths and weaknesses and acting to improve service delivery, providing planning oversight for scheduling of screening officers, ensuring efficient day-today operation of the airport through effective delegation, monitoring and intervention and much more.

Julio Quijano opens up and shares his personal journey about overcoming adversity and making his wildest dreams come true...one day at a time!

Julio Quijano opens up and shares his personal months, his condition had stabilized, he was left with a journey about overcoming adversity and making damaged kidney that was then functioning at 65%. “As his wildest dreams come true...one day at a time! we know, kidneys are an essential part of our body, and It’s midday on a clear spring day, and Julio is about to come and share his story with us. Casually dressed in jeans, runners and a black windbreaker, he strolls up with tea in hand. He sits down to join me at a table near the window overlooking the runway. For the past week, Julio has been in training for Screening Officer recertification, getting ready to resume work after being on medical leave, going to physio and regularly visiting his doctor.

perform the function of filtering our body, discharging any organic chemicals that the body doesn’t need,” he explains. Even though his physical state was stabilized, Julio was about to endure the biggest hurdle of his life overcoming the mental breakdown. Immediately after his extremities were amputated, Julio was in a state of shock, and could not yet grasp what was happening and the state that he was in. His life had changed forever.

Months later, Julio was still struggling with the trauma of his amputations. “By nature, you never imagine Since getting hired as a Screening Officer with losing your legs. When you see yourself without legs, Aerogard, Julio has come a long way. “I am it’s very powerful,” says Julio. In early 1999, Julio was very proud of what I do. It’s a fulfillment to see scheduled to attend GF Strong Rehabilitation center, passengers thank you for keeping everyone safe.” to learn how to function and care for himself. “I didn’t want to live anymore, I didn’t want to talk to anyone, not In 1998 Julio contracted Meningitis, causing him to even my family. I was still in shock. I didn’t know what lose both legs below the knees, both of his hands and happened, was I still living?” Julio explains. “They even causing damage to his hearing and vision. After eight made me attend psychology and motivational classes.”

Personal Information Changes If there are any changes to your personal information such as address changes, name changes, adding or changing emergency contacts, please fill out the Employee Info Change form that can be obtained by emailing aviation.hr@ca.g4s.com or for those at YVR, the form is still available at the Level 4 office. G4S SECURE SOLUTIONS, Aviation Division On the first day of class, Julio got ready and went into the building, only to realize that the class was on the second floor. “I went into the elevator and someone yelled ‘stop, hold the elevator’. I held the button, and saw the person coming in had no movement; he was paralyzed from the neck down. This person was moving just by blowing in and out of a tube that controlled his wheelchair. That got my attention. I had movement, I could move my arms and legs. ‘Why are you sad?” he asked me. And I thought, what do you know about me, can you see I don’t have legs?! He then replied, ‘I don’t have the chance to walk again, you do!’ and I thought, wow, this is a powerful thought. He told me, ‘if I was you, I would just walk!’ It seemed that during those 15 seconds in the elevator, we were talking for hours. I got the message I needed,” Julio explains. Once they arrived to second floor, Julio went to get a drink before entering the classroom. When he entered the room, he was surprised to see that the man talking to him in the elevator was in fact the instructor of the psychology class. “Literally when I saw that, I told him ‘I am going to go!’ and from that point on I decided to walk!” says Julio. “That was the turning point of my life!” After getting his prosthetic legs, Julio learned how to walk again. “It took me 3-4 years to incorporate myself back into society. I questioned, how do I look? How do people see me? I felt ashamed, I felt different. I don’t feel like I have to explain myself, but people have to understand that I am very open. People who live with a disability want to be treated honestly, and not feel inferior to others. If you treat me like I am inferior to you, that’s how it makes me feel. I went through the same process and have the capacity to do the same work as you do. I have the same job that you have, I do it differently, but I get the job done!” he explains. Julio’s doctor advised him that his kidney wasn’t going to function anymore. During the next two years, Julio’s kidney deteriorated, but fortunately his brother gave him his kidney. In 2003, Julio was admitted to the VGH, and the kidney transplant was complete. “My body changed, and as soon as I got the kidney my body started working again. It’s like an engine, your car gets a new part and it starts working again,” explains Julio. This Julio,

Years later and nearly losing his breath, Julio has embraced his life more than ever. Today, Julio is the founder of Latin American Soccer Academy of BC. He works with youth and coordinates programs at various community centres across the Lower Mainland. With a passion for cooking, Julio provides catering services for events. In 2000, just a few short years after losing his legs and hands, Julio won the 100 meter at the Paralympics. “I almost beat a guy with one leg,” he laughs. With a number of powerful moments in his life, Julio has started writing a book about his life to inspire others. “I wrote almost 110 pages, getting to the part where I start walking,” says Julio. He has also been a motivational speaker himself, talking to Elementary school kids, speaking about his experience. In the end, nothing seems to be stopping Julio from doing what he loves and making his dreams come true. “Anything is possible, all you need is time and organization!” says Julio. The first quarter of 2019 was a busy, challenging, and exciting time in HR. We established a new HR team structure, and welcomed three new HR team members to G4S Aviation. We started working on standard operating procedures (SOPs) for various HR tasks, as well as determining how we could best utilize our new structure to assist Managers and employees. We were also working on the new benefits portal and for Salaried employees the new benefits plans and we began to implement the changes in benefits. Heading into Q2, we will finish writing SOPs and determining who on the team will have primary accountability for certain tasks. The team will conclude the implementation of the new benefits portal and plans. With the launch of our Emplyee Engagement Survey, and results received, we plan to use your feedback to hold focus groups and create action plans that will make G4S Aviation an even better place to work - more on this to come after the survey is complete. Finally, work will begin on several HR projects such as establishing a formal job evaluation program and refining our hiring and background checks processes. Thank you for taking the time to read about what your HR team is doing. We are available to support all employees - don’t hesitate to reach out to your HRG or a member of our team as needed!

We’re Hiring!

Our YVR terminal is hiring full-time Screening Officers. If you have any colleagues, friends or family looking to start a rewarding career in aviation security, let them know! Our current postings can be found on our website https://careers.g4s.com/en

Page 12

G4S SECURE SOLUTIONS, G4S SECURE SOLUTIONS,Aviation Aviation Division Division Capacity Team The Capacity department is responsible for scheduling the optimal number of Screening Officers to ensure we meet our contractual obligations with CATSA and YVR. Our passenger forecasts continue to be used by CATSA and the wider YVR community to know what type of traffic is expected at the Screening checkpoints, and this information helps us to create G4S’s projected spending against the budget. The past year has brought significant challenges but the department has been very successful at predicting and planning for the future. From left: MacHerald Rabanes, Isabelle Aps, Chelsea Lee, Neil McClure, Vivian

YVR passenger volume has Wang, Thomas Cybucki, Hannah Tobias, Zuleykha Hassan, Chantel Ng, Elaine Yin, Philip Key stagnated year over year in 2019, and no one knows what the future will bring. However, Capacity has prepared G4S to be in the best position given the circumstances and is confident that we have set ourselves up as best as possible. We said goodbye to a couple of staff over the past year, but we welcomed Vivian, Chelsea, and Elaine who have been great additions to our team. Capacity is also in the midst of a small reorganization to better serve the rest of the company. We will be welcoming back Liza soon from maternity leave and expect Monica back from her maternity leave sometime next year. The Capacity team is available 365 days a year to provide support to Screening Officers and the operation. Please do not hesitate to contact us at aviationcapacity@ca.g4s.com.

IT Support Team G4S’s most amazing IT Department recently welcomed a new team member Michael Shang. In May we finished Aviation’s migration of all our computer files stored on our file servers to Google Team Drives for all departments and regional airports. We are assisting Operations to ensure that everybody can work using the same up to date information. The most visible effort is expanding the reports available on the new Timegate Insights Report Server using CATSA, Timegate, G4S Login and ADP data to provide a simpler and more organized view of our daily operations. We are currently focused on completing the new YVR Operations near the North Checkpoint along with our daily work of responding to iTop Tickets. For inquiries, please visit https://itsupport.g4s.com

SPRING 2019 ISSUE

Situational Awareness Situational awareness is being aware of what is happening around in terms of where you are, where you are supposed to be, and whether anyone or anything around you is a threat to your health and safety. Our situational awareness is only as accurate as our own perception or reading of the situation, so that we think is happening may not accurately reflect. Lacking or inadequate situation awareness has been identified as one of the primary factors in workplace incident or injury attributed to human error. Why is situational awareness important to you? Situational awareness is import to everyone – it is important that everyone is aware of their surroundings and the potential hazards they face. It is important that each individual is looking out for his or her own safety as well as looking out for their workmates. Even the most experienced people can lack situational awareness – especially when doing tasks that have become routine.

Improve your situational awareness: Get in the habit of regularly pausing to make a quick mental assessment of your working environment. When doing so, consider the following questions: 1. Is there anything around you that poses a threat to your health and safety, and if so, to what extent? 2. Is that threat big enough that you should stop working? 3. Is there anything you can do to safely reduce that threat in order that you can carry on working safely?

The SLAM Technique

S L A

TOP engages your mind before your hands. Look at the task in hand.

OOK at your workplace and find the hazards to you and your team mates. Report these immediately to your supervisor.

SSESS the effects that the hazards have on you, the

people you work with, equipment, procedures, pressures and environment. Ask yourself if you have the knowledge, training and tools to do the task safety. Do this with your supervisor.

M

ANAGE if you feel unsafe stop working. Tell your SDM

and other SOs. Tell your SDM what actions you think are necessary to make the situation safe.

Kudos to our staff who receive positive feedback from passengers, managers and staff alike. Keep up the great work! Michael Kwan Yick, Chan SO - After I received a call from the MSD to warn me that the CEO of Air canada was travelling through the PBS North Checkpoint, I put SO Michael at the randomizer position with instructions to ensure that the CEO was placed in a lightning fast line and showed him the CEO’s picture. He recognized the CEO and followed instrucions perfectly and the CEO was done in under 5 min. After screening the CEO thanked me for the excelleent serfvice at the checkpoint. That thank you belings to Michael! Kevin Wing SO, YYJ - Kevin was working at NPST when a CSA brought a non-screened checked bag into the restricted area for an international flight. This was a non CATSA breach of security, and had Kevin not intercepted the bag, the flight might have been diverted or worse! Kevin is recognized for his quick response, he literally saved the day Tammy Robinson SO, YCD - Tammy Robinson showed incredible professionalism and skill in assisting and taking charge at the checkpoint when a passenger fell after accidentally kicking the edge of our HBS ramp conveyor and falling to the floor. Tammy’s previous career as a paramedic was just what we and the passenger needed to stabilize the patient while waiting for airport first response to arrive and take over the scene. The entire staff assisted as needed to provide alternate routing giving space for the passenger to be treated and recover with dignity. Fortunately the passenger was able to continue on her flight that day with some wheelchair assistance provided by the air carrier for the following sections of her journey. Gabriela, Alvarez Lopez SO - was complimented by a passenger who says that every time she travels, when she sees SO Gabby at the randomizer position, she notices that Gabby is well organized and very professional. Good Job Gabby! Ajay Kumar, Beeharry SO - was given kudos for excellent job working at ITC LIne 1 divesting position. SO exhibited dedication, professional and outstanding customer service when dealing with 4 diverting stations by himself. His great efforts helped a lot for the operation and xray operation and there was no any unnecessary baggout bags. SO alwasy showed the same excellent service to the organation.
