The President’s Humanitarian Award Every day we encounter stories of bravery at G4S - whether it is of an employee helping to prevent suicide, performing CPR or first aid to save a life, or even delivering a baby. In appreciation of the outstanding efforts demonstrated by members of our team that went above and beyond the call of duty, G4S employees are presented with the President’s Humanitarian Award. This award is issued throughout the year in recognition of efforts made with respect to the preservation and promotion of a human life. We have seen several winners of the award this year from around the country. Recipients of the President’s Humanitarian Award so far this year include; Darcy Pickunyk, Kelly Thomas, Andrea Berger, Cameron Allendorf, Chris Gale, Adam Butterworth, Khalida Samim and Brian McDonald. If you know of someone who has gone above and beyond to save or promote human life, please let us know! Please send an email to your local manager with their name, the date and the details of their efforts and they will submit it on your behalf.

Driver Training: Preventing the Preventable This summer, G4S conducted vehicle training in Montreal, Toronto, and Calgary in an effort to promote and educate thoughtful driving tactics. Personnel from over 16 branches attended the training and sessions were hosted in both French and English. The training had two aims; to reduce the number of preventable collisions and incidents, and, increase driver skills and knowledge on the operation of a G4S vehicle to better keep them safe. Spanning three days, sessions were hosted in the classroom and in a closed parking lot. Staff were taught the fundamentals of defensive driving, how to safely maneuver in parking lots and tight spaces, and various situational techniques. Additionally, individuals were given the knowledge and responsibility to train new hires to ensure they meet G4S’s driving standards and are able to safely operate a vehicle. We all have a responsibility to adhere to safe driving tactics when on the road, whether for work or play. In Canada, distracted driving is the number one risk on the road, contributing to 8 out of 10 accidents. Many provinces now have strict laws discouraging distracted driving, many involving fines and demerit penalties. Do yourself a favour - plan your route ahead of time, put your cell phone away, avoid eating or drinking while driving. If you have to use a mobile device while driving on the job, pull over in a safe area to do so. Remember, safety starts with me at home, work and play.

Health & Safety: Proper Ergonomics and Posture

There are various factors that can cause back pain throughout your day. This pain may be caused by repetitive strain or movements, physical health, body mechanics or more commonly poor posture. According to Statistics Canada, back pain is among the most common chronic conditions nationally, affecting 80% of Canadians at least once in their lives.

While going through your day think about what you are doing to ensure you can maintain or improve upon your posture. What bad habits have you developed that could affect your posture? Here are some tips to assist you with your posture throughout your day. Standing for long periods Many of us at G4S are tasked with standing for long periods while on post. To minimize fatigue and ensure the correct posture, keep your head held straight; avoid tilting it forward, backwards or sideways. Keep your shoulder blades back and your knees straight. Try not to put unnecessary strain on your hips by tilting them and leaning to one side. Lastly, ensure you are wearing proper footwear with a supported arch. Driving For those of us who drive for long periods at a time, start by check the positioning of your seat. Make sure your back can touch the backrest, and that your hips and knees are at the same level. You should be able to operate the pedals without squishing your legs under the steering wheel or moving your back away from the seat. Minimize straight on your neck and back by adjusting your steering wheel to prevent your elbows from overreaching. Take a micro-break at a service station to stretch if you are driving for long periods of time. At the office Having the correct seated position when at a desk or in front of a computer for extended periods is essential to a productive workday. Make sure you position your computer monitor 18-24 inches away from you and 15-30 degrees below your line of sight. If possible, use an adjustable officer chair with lumbar support and arm rests. Keep your forearms and thighs 90 degrees from your spine.

G4S selects ADP as new payroll service provider.

We are pleased to announce that G4S Canada selected ADP as your new payroll service provider and will replace Ceridian. ADP will provide employees with a new, user-friendly pay stub information portal. The portal will give employees the option to subscribe to statement self-service – a function that involves receiving and storing their paystub and T4 online. Also, ADP gives users the power to change address information and receive pay by cheque or direct deposit. If you are an employee receiving a cheque and would like to receive direct deposit, please provide your payroll administrator with a void cheque from the bank account you would like credited. The change to ADP will improve the ability for your human resources team to process payroll, benefits and administrative information. Employee numbers will remain the same, ensuring a smooth transition from Ceridian to ADP. To register for the online ADP system, please talk to your payroll administrator or human resources representative.
