A G4S C ANADA PUBLIC ATION – FALL / WINTER 2019

A message from Peter Panaritis: It’s hard to believe that we are already preparing for the Holiday Season and the upcoming end of another Fiscal Year. Through 2019, I had the opportunity to meet many of you in my travels. From meeting our Aviation Teams in BC to celebrating with Bob Mailloux for his retirement in Windsor, and the visits I’ve had across Canada, I am thankful that I was able to spend time with so many of our team members. Despite the speed of business and the rate of change in our industry, one thing rings constant for me and that is the spirit of our people. Seeing you live our values day in and day out reminds me why I am so proud to lead G4S Canada.

Peter Panaritis

Chief Executive Officer and President, G4S Secure Solutions

The year is not over yet, and we still have a lot of work to do! Our Sales Team and Operation Teams across Canada are very busy booking year end coverage for our valued clients. We have work to do in developing our Action Items from the results of the Global Employee Survey completed in May 2019, we have the G4S Canada Communication Survey results to review, and I am looking forward to reading all the Summit Awards submissions, and working with the leadership team to identify our 2019 Summit Award Winners. The Summit Awards celebration will take place in Vancouver in January 2020, and it is an opportunity to recognize the great work and achievements of our colleagues from across the country. It truly is the event of the year, and one of my personal favourites. This event gives me and the Executive Team the opportunity to meet and celebrate with our best people. It is also a great way for us to kick off a new year. For the upcoming Holiday Season, I hope that you’re able to spend time with your friends, family and loved ones. While there are plenty of festivities and celebrations, please take a moment to think about safety. Dress warmly, and be mindful of icy or slippery surfaces when putting up outdoor decorations. If you are hosting or attending parties, ensure you or your guests have sober drivers for the ride home. Never drive under the influence. Safety starts with each of us individually, at home, at work and at play. I wish you a safe and happy holiday season, and look forward to continuing our work together to achieve our goals in 2020!

G4S Provides Security to Canada’s New Cannabis Industry. It’s been just over a year since Cannabis was legalized in Canada on October 17th 2018. Legalization brought about the rare event of a completely new industry springing into existence overnight - and with it significant security challenges for Cannabis industry stakeholders. The legal cannabis industry is projected to have generated approximately $1 billion in revenue in its first year. There’s been anticipation and excitement surrounding the industry, but like any industry, it has also had to go through growing pains - from regulatory and retail licensing to supply issues. Security has had to grow with it. The need for security in the Cannabis industry is high, not only due to the government’s regulatory requirements, but due to the continued presence of Cannabis on the black market. Security is required at every step of the process - from growing it, to customers purchasing it at retail stores. Known threats range from theft of cultivated crops from growers, theft of intellectual property (e.g. ingredients required to engineer and cultivate particular strains of plants), to armed robberies at the retail level. To help protect against these new and evolving threats, G4S subject matter experts Eli Vetcherebine (Business Development Manager), Brian Reid, (Business Development Manager), Jason Simpson (Manager, Corporate Risk Services) and Rob Plume (VP of Sales, Secure Integration) have developed unique security solutions that address the pain points in this growing industry. “One client, who was having their first outdoor grow operation, was at their highest 1

level of risk during their harvest season. Since they’re in an isolated rural location, there’s very little to deter a robbery especially at night.” says Jason Simpson Rob Plume describes how with this particular client, they were also able to provide the solution on a tight deadline: “G4S Secure Integration was working with our Consulting and Manned Guarding teams to develop an integrated solution for this particular client. The client was reviewing their options when they came to us and pushed up the schedule by a month. Knowing that we have a robust and proven remote video monitoring solution (OnSight) we discussed looking at a temporary solution for their first growing season and then looking at a more permanent solution for next year. The client readily accepted our solution and were very grateful that we had this tool at our disposal. Within a week we had installed seven of our OnSight solutions, had them commissioned, tested and provided attestation shots to the regulatory bodies - resulting in the

client being granted one of the last outdoor grow licenses in Canada.” “During the day we had licensed G4S security guards patrol the perimeter of the production facility. At night the number of guards was reduced, while the OnSight made up the difference due to its motion detecting infrared and thermal cameras sending video and analytics to our Risk Operations Centre for monitoring.” added Eli Vetcherebine. “Ultimately, this combination reduced their level of risk and provided protection day and night around the clock.” “In the end,” Rob concludes, “it showed us the power of great conversation. Without the level of engagement that our team had with the client, we may have never uncovered the opportunity or the driving issues behind their concerns. We were glad to be of service and expect to be of service again next season.” While October 2018 brought about many changes with the legalization of cannabis, October 2019 brought about even more change with the legalization of the production of cannabis edibles - products such as beverages, candies, baked goods or topicals infused with cannabis. Currently companies looking to sell these kinds of products are in the approval process, however it is expected that products could be available on the market by December. These products will all have different production methods, facilities, and retail environments - from edible cafes to vaping lounges. Each will require security solutions tailored to the unique risks of each location.

“The retail side of the business requires a security solution that has many similarities to what’s required for alcohol retailers. However, there’s the additional challenge of restricting access to customers at the door - in that the onus is on our guards to verify customers’ age and identification before they’re allowed to enter the store.” explains Brian Reid. “That’s in addition to being vigilant and prepared for attempted armed robberies or smashand-grab type thefts.” There’s expected to be a lot of businesses related to edible cannabis products popping up across the country as the business grows. The industry is estimated to be worth $2.7 billion a year in Canada. “If you hear about a Cannabis grow operation, retail store or an edible production facility being constructed, those are all the kind of businesses for which we have the expertise and experience in providing security. Our solutions are especially effective if we’re able to get involved during the construction phase,” says Vetcherebin. “It’s a new and exciting industry. It’s evolving. And it’s something that G4S is uniquely positioned to manage. We’re excited to help clients navigate and protect against security threats, and we look forward to developing our existing and future partnerships in Cannabis.”

Introducing the new G4S OnSight

G4S OnSight combines some of the industry’s most advanced video technology with live monitoring. Simply put, we use cameras with analytics (automatically detect activity) and immediately transmit any anomalies to our 24/7 monitoring centre, known as the ROC (Risk Operations Centre). The ROC screens the video and then takes action based on what is seen. They reference a predetermined list of steps for the specific location that may range from talking to someone via a remote speaker or alerting mobile response or even law enforcement services. The best part is that it can be deployed and set-up quickly. It’s another way that we can address a customer’s needs, especially in remote locations. The pole mounted unit is a fully modular unit that is customizable and adaptable to meet even the most unique requirements with the ability to be live to monitoring within minutes. The solution can withstand most weather conditions. The trailer unit is ideal for temporary use and designed

specifically with remote or undeveloped properties in mind, requiring no existing infrastructure or installation.

The key to our OnSight product is that it gives our customers peace of Scott Sutton mind. They know that we’re watching G4S Product over their property, people and assets Manager when they can’t. With this technology we can easily monitor a site via video, deter and detect criminal activity and alert the police within minutes - all while recording the cameras as evidence if needed. Criminals will think twice when they see a G4S OnSight logo and in most cases we’ll see them and take action before they even see us! If you know of an opportunity where OnSight might be the right solution, just reach out to us at solutions@ca.g4s.com and we’ll be happy to talk with you to see how we can help.

Safety Matters

rom now until New Year’s Day, there are all sorts of wonderful holidays and things to

celebrate. Be aware that decorations, food, and alcohol can all present dangers. A few common-sense precautions can help keep your holidays safe and happy. Candles, coloured lights, Christmas trees, artificial snow, and plants add a lot of beauty to festive occasions. Young children (and pets, too!) often like to play with these items though, so always keep an eye on them. Many holiday celebrations include alcohol consumption. If you do drink alcohol, never drive. If you’re hosting a party, watch out for guests and make sure everyone is riding with a sober driver. Provide plenty of alternatives to alcohol such as soft drinks, coffee, tea, and cocoa. Stop serving alcohol a few hours before your party ends. For indoor and outdoor lights, inspect them for broken or missing bulbs, and check the cords for fraying before use. Don’t place cords where they can trip people, and don’t run them under furniture, rugs, carpeting or other objects, or around doors and windows. As we celebrate, give thanks, and reflect, we also need to take time to pay special attention to our health. Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps you can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Wash your hands with soap and clean running water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and clean water are not available, use an alcohol-based product. Manage your stress; the holidays don’t need to take a toll on your health. Balance work, home, and play. Get support from family and friends.Keep a relaxed and positive outlook and enjoy the holidays. I would like to wish everyone a safe and healthy holiday season! - Paolo Cortungo, Director, Health & Safety

Women in Security:

Featuring Tracy Bello Tracy Bello is a Business Development Manager with G4S Secure Integration, or as it’s often called, “The Tech Office” in Toronto. She’s a veteran in the security industry, with her career spanning close to 30 years. She’s worked in communications, inside sales and outside sales roles, with the majority of her tenure at a major intrusion and alarm monitoring company for 28 years. We sat down with Tracy to talk about her role at G4S, the lessons she’s learned over her career, and the changes and trends she looks forward to in the future. ................................................................................................................................................................ You’ve been in the security industry for close to 30 years. What initially attracted you to it? I started working straight out of high school, so it was really the fast-moving sales environment that I found exciting. When I started, I really enjoyed the feeling of starting from the bottom, learning and working my way through the processes of the various departments within the company. What appeals to me today is the Trusted Advisor aspect of my role at G4S - if I’m given a problem from a customer, it’s figuring out how I can help them solve it by designing a security solution that meets their needs. Tell me more about your role at G4S. As a Business Development Manager, I meet with potential clients, listen to their security pains and concerns, and then propose and design a solution for them with a focus on integrating technology into their security program. In a nutshell, it’s pretty similar to the role I worked in previously, but what’s different at G4S is that I can help provide an all encompassing, integrated physical security solution. While security personnel is a very established part of the business, the technology side is newer. Having previous experience at an established intrusion detection, access control and camera technology business - being able to get involved at an earlier stage of G4S Secure Integrations has been very intriguing and appealing to me. G4S Secure Integrations is 5 years old, so in the industry we’re still relatively young. That being said, we’re able to move fast and we’ve been able to grow and get better quickly. The numbers and profits reflect that as well. It’s been exciting to be a part of it, and to feel the business growing and moving in the right direction. What advice would you give to yourself when you were just starting out? The first thing I would say is be confident. The second is how to properly qualify leads. I used to talk with a customer, even if it was for just one card reader or camera, and then hop in my car, drive downtown, spend a couple hours in travel, get to the site, and it could’ve been a 250 square foot site, get all the site specifications, drive all the way back, and then evaluate the lead. That was pretty inefficient. 5

7

A G4S C ANADA PUBLIC ATION – FALL / WINTER 2019

Now I ask the proper kind of questions - what’s the height of the ceiling, where’s your server room, are we allowed to work during the day or not - rather than spending that time on the road, you ask the right questions beforehand that address their pain while also working within their budget. Being realistic with the budget goes a long way towards proving to the customer that you’re a trusted advisor. Getting the customer to be upfront about their budget is really important. There’s no point trying to sell a highend sports car when they can’t afford it. You’ve got to establish a relationship with the customer so that they’ll feel comfortable giving you an approximate budget, and then you can tailor a solution that serves their immediate needs, and then plan a second phase of the solution to add additional building blocks to their security system if they can’t afford it all at once. Also, you’ve got to make sure you’re talking to the person who can sign-off on the order. Lastly, communication is key. If I don’t have an answer, I don’t have any issues with saying “I got your email. I don’t know the answer right now, let me investigate and I’ll get back to you”. It prevents the customer having to wait in silence, wondering when they’ll hear back from you. Little things like that can be the difference. What would you tell somebody that is new to G4S or the security industry that would inspire them? I would tell them about the growth opportunities within the company. I think It’s a good idea to work within different departments in the organization to get an understanding of the workflow. Then ideally they’ll find out through that process what position or what area they’d like to stay in. It’s probably different for every person. For sales, it depends on if you like to meet people, or if you’re the type that would prefer to take calls, but regardless I think going out to meet people and getting a full understanding from the ground up of what it takes to get a system installed - getting to know the technical guys and installers in the field, and knowing exactly how all the devices work and communicate - that gives you a better understanding of how a solution will work. And it’s reflected in your quotes to customers. Another thing is just continually learning. Getting out there, going to networking events, learning about new

trends and technology. And it shows. I’ll have people who I’ve known in the industry for years say “How do you know about all of this?” It’s also important to learn from your own experience especially when you’re designing solutions. There’s so many different aspects to solutions that are unique to each job. As long as you learn it, and bring those lessons with you to the next client, you’ll get better. Tell us about an achievement that you’re proud of? Over the years I have received President’s Club and Merit Awards. For my short time with G4S I have already received a few NPS Perfect 10 ratings as well and customer referrals are always rewarding. When they take the time to let you know that you were helpful, that it was a stressful situation, and that they were glad they got a hold of me, even if it’s not a large sale, is always rewarding. That they were satisfied and trust us to the point where they want to refer us to another client is something I’m proud of. What are some changes or trends that you see in the future for physical security? Access control has been changing because of the possibility of duplication of access cards and customers wanting integration with their payroll, and parking and building automation systems. Video has evolved significantly - it used to be analog video systems were affordable for all customers. Then Internet Protocol Video systems came along and were something that only banks and large companies could afford, but now with the increase in demand, the pricing has gone down on IP cameras and it has become available to everyone. Another change is how customers are monitoring their intrusion security alerts. Traditionally, your signals were always going off to a monitoring centre, but now you can track them through an app on your phone and see who’s coming and going, which is the kind of information that wasn’t always readily available. Is there anything else you’d like to share or a message to leave people with? If security is what you want to do - just keep going. Don’t give up. My son once asked me “Did you expect to be in security for this long?” I told him, “No I didn’t.” But after so many years, I must enjoy it or I wouldn’t still be doing it! ............................................................................. 8

G4S Values in Action On a daily basis G4S security personnel save lives, prevent robberies, save individuals from harm, protect customer assets and place themselves at risk to protect our customers and the public. For this edition of the G4S Newsletter, we would like to highlight two team members who have demonstrated the G4S Values through their actions: DESTINY DOUGLAS SUDBURY, ONTARIO - On Sept 8th at approximately 4:30pm, while on post at the Sudbury City Transit site, Destiny was notified of a male sleeping in a stall in the public washroom at the City Transit station. When she arrived it was clear that the male was non-responsive and not breathing normally. Destiny was unable to find a pulse upon checking. The male’s skin was blue. Destiny was working alone that day and recruited the assistance of a cleaner (Mike) onsite to go get the naloxone kit in the security office. She then proceeded to call 911 and kept EMS on speaker. The cleaner returned with the Naloxone spray and Destiny proceeded to administer it. Destiny, while only weighing 120 pounds, then asked the cleaner to assist in moving the 310 pound male to the ground in order to start compression. After approximately 62 compressions, she succeeded in getting a pulse of 164 bpm. EMS then arrived on the scene to take over, and shortly after the male became responsive and was then taken to Hospital by EMS. Our guards are faced with a variety of challenges each and every day at this transit area which is a hub for drug deals, high crime, and mental health related situations. It takes a professional, calm, and quick thinking person to successfully handle these situations. In this case, Destiny did an exemplary job. Her ability to remain calm, respond and act quickly to the situation ultimately saved this man’s life. - Kim Giroux, General Manager, Northern Ontario DESMOND DEAN HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA - Assistant Patrol Supervisor Desmond Dean was recently recognized by the HSIA as an outstanding member of the G4S team. Desmond exemplifies the G4S values of integrity, respect and teamwork. He can always be counted on to bring innovative suggestions , backfill shifts and support the program in anyway asked. 10

Along with some help, Reza Irani brings a passenger back to life.

“All of a sudden I hear one of the Screening Officers calling out ‘call 911’ and I had no idea what was going on,” says Reza Irani, a Service Delivery Manager at Vancouver International Airport while doing his normal routine, taking care of breaks and oversight at the checkpoint. What started out as a steady shift for him, quickly turned out to be an experience he will never forget. “I went to line number one and saw a woman lying on the ground. She was not moving!” explains Reza. Within minutes, Reza found out that the man standing in line behind her was a paramedic. He claimed that she has had a heart attack and was not breathing. “I went to SDM Gurinder Besahati and told him to call 911” says Reza. The paramedic moved the passenger from the area and started giving CPR, but she was not responding. Thankfully, Reza had taken First Aid classes and also remembered the AED machine located at the information desk. He started administering the AED machine while the paramedic continuously gave her CPR. Additionally, the woman in front of her, also a nurse, helped out as much as she could. After about 12 minutes, the paramedics showed up. “By this time, the paramedic, the nurse and I had revived her and she was out of cardiac arrest” explains Reza. With the help of the paramedic 13

and the nurse, Reza’s quick thinking and knowledge of CPR helped save the woman’s life. Reza realizes that without his knowledge of First Aid, he wouldn’t have been equipped to act quickly, knowing exactly what to do in that given moment. Shortly after, when the woman’s condition was stabilized with the help of the machine, Reza noticed a man standing close by holding a purse. “He stood there for literally 20 minutes looking at her and not moving. He did not speak, he did not move, he did not say a word.” Reza approached him and asked if he could help in any way, and the man replied, “That’s my wife!” YVR authorities came and tried to talk to him, and he was visibly in shock as he was not saying much. After a few minutes, he calmed down and started talking more. He came out of the shock and the paramedics started asking questions. Her husband said, “She’s never been in a hospital in her life, never.” “I have my First Aid Course completed, which is valid for up to 2-3 years. I always take the refresher course, because it’s always good to know,” says Reza. In the end, the woman’s condition was stabilized. “We helped revive her and that was a good sign. All we know is that when she was transported to the hospital she was alive [and she had her pulse]” says Reza.
