Brief
This work was tasked to Pieter Vermeersch’s studio by noArchitecten as part of the firm’s entry in the competition for the redevelopment of Het Steen into a tourist reception and visitor center. Our objective was to create a brick tone-blending system that would produce a seamless gradient on the facades of the construction. The pattern was based on an algorithm built in Grasshopper that simulated the builders’ randomic choice of one brick instead of another from a batch. This process resulted in pre-mixed batches that contained a certain ratio of different brick colors and corresponded to a certain height quote of the building.

Brief
In 2022 I had a one-month curricular internship at CZA which was followed by a 7-month internship after my graduation in 2023. During this time at the office i was involved in a total of three projects. My most extensive work with CZA was on the Bayside Central project, in Gibraltar, and it’s the one i will be showcasing. My task in this project was twofold, first to produce a digital model of the existing work and adapt it to the corrections needed and second to develop the team’s new ideas in order for them to be assessed bi-weekly by the client. To achieve these tasks, given the extensive volume of the project, i had to develop new skills in block management strategies and optimization.

For the purpose of this portfolio i have showcased my involvement in the development of the project’s ceramic parapet. Nevertheless i have collaborated on many other design aspects of Bayside Central.

Master’s Thesis

Location: Belgrade, Zurich
Scope: Research
Keywords: Informal settlements, peripheral urbanization, environmental humanities
Software used: QGis, Illustrator, Photoshop, Rhinoceros.
Abstract
Water quality in urban space is a reflection of the political power of its inhabitants, espe- cially in informal settlements where marginalized groups have limited access to water and deal with water pollution and management issues. Non-hu- man actors who are integral parts of all urban ecosystems and who suffer the impacts of urban- isation, also deserve recognition and protection of their rights and agency. Informal settlers have the potential for collective action and innovation to challenge the dominant paradigms of urban gov- ernance and create more equitable and sustain- able urban environments that respect the needs of all forms of life. The objective of this work is to spark a conversation in the informal neighbourhood of Kaludjerica, a suburb of Belgrade, that can lead to the remediation of the settlement’s polluted stream.

Brief
An extremely degraded historic core, coupled with illegal waste dumping as well as severe droughts followed by surprise floods and landslides. The unconventional nature of this project found us working in groups on a territorial scale researching one of the subjects proposed by NEB and presenting through infographics. The next step consisted in putting together a masterplan of mitigation strategies inherent to a transect of the town, of our choice. In the last month of the studio we were asked to produce a personal proposal, with respect to the masterplan and the building physics examples. In this context my proposal was the requalification of an abandoned high school in all of its area of 9000 mq. The main principle is the demolition of 70% of the buildings and using the waste from the demolition to produce bricks on-site through workshop cycles. What comes after that is a park area to increase ground permeability and a living lab center the envelope of which is composed by the upcycled bricks in different combinations with varying permeability of light and air.

This project aims to revitalize Valle Mosso by transforming its abandoned textile factories, remnants of a once-thriving industry, into vibrant community hubs. Located along the river, these large industrial buildings, now derelict, obstruct both access and view of the water, creating a disconnect between the town and its natural resources. The plan involves demolishing the non-structural parts of the ground and first floors of these factories to open up direct access to the river. The repurposed structures will then house various associations from the broader Biellese area, providing them with much-needed space for their activities. This initiative will not only restore community access to the river but also breathe new life into Valle Mosso by fostering local engagement and revitalizing its industrial heritage.

Brief
The course focused on the project for the redevelopment of IC Racconigi / Drovetti School in via Bardonecchia 34 in Turin. Our approach to this challenge was to emphasize and prioritize the school’s goal: creative and experimental pedagogical programs. Re-think classrooms and labs towards a collective sense of learning and space saving (flexible classrooms). Created outdoor learning spaces and performance structures for more dynamic ways of learning. We Introduced a youth center for people with more progressed knowledge or interest in arts, for inspiration, collectiveness and curiosity. Public access to the school’s facilities (labs and library) after school hours. Outdoor structures that host public associations’ initiatives and also just be used by the public. Gym was turned in a multifunctional space for exhibitions, performative activities and sports. Our intention is to break the linear barrier, allowing a more inclusive public space to be visible and inviting.
